They opened at 5pm on Cinco de Mayo so we got their slightly earlier and thought we were in good shape standing in line. Del Toro is tiny so even though we were early and relatively close to the front of the line we were not so lucky as to secure a table and had to settle for the last bar stool for the 4 of us. I ordered the guava margarita although I was torn with the passion fruit. A tropical one sounded good after the beers from earlier that day. The first sip was sweet and refreshing and afterwards too coyingly sweet and unremarkable. Our standing spot around the one bar stool was frustrating as we were constantly being shoved by servers and other customers. Unfortunately, the Sope (masa) was bland which brought down the flavor of the dish. I'd still say this place is an easy recommendation to offer in the end. read more

Stopped in here after a locs yelp event for tacos and it was a pleasant experience. Service was quick and our server was personable. Tacos were seasoned well (I ordered steak and shrimp) and the drinks were very tasty and strong! Drinks! That's the highlight of this place. Tacos (2 steak, one chicken), we're good. But living in the city of Chicago, of course I've had better. And definitely have had less expensive per taco. The chicken was offered as "marinated or grilled". Since marinating something is just letting it sit longer with seasoning before cooking, it didn't explain how it was cooked. I mean, it's not like I was asking about ceviche (which CAN be "cooked" by it marinating in lime juice). When I asked, "well, how is the marinated one cooked", I was looked at like I was the one who said something confusing. So, I decided to take a chance and go with the marinated one. It was just grilled as well, just with more seasoning since it was marinated. Now we know lol. My friends had their burgers as well. They said they liked em and were filling. But again, I didn't come for the food, I look forward to the drinks. All drinks I had we a hit. I had all margaritas. Hibiscus, Pepino, and Tamarindo. All yummy. Hibiscus was my favorite. My friends also tried a variety of flavors. Everyone was happy with their choices. Not pictured - the tacos I finished before remembering to get a picture because of how good they were. The ceviche has options of being mixed or either just shrimp or just white fish. Appreciate that they have that accommodation for that dish. The guac was creamy and flavorful. Between the 3 in my party, both apps were delicious and more than enough for us. My hibiscus margarita was absolutely divine, would be inclined to share its one of the best margs i've ever had. The juice was fresh and the tequila was well balanced - perfectly refreshing. I will definetly be coming back. Their patio space is massive and looks perfect for summer. Would reccomend making a reservation otherwise anticipate a potential short wait for a table if walking in. They have about 15 tables (that may be a stretch), so go early or be prepared to wait. Luckily our wait was like 5-10 mins. We ordered steak, chicken, & shrimp tacos. I didn't try the chicken, but my friend didn't like it. The steak was good, to me I'd say a 3.5. The shrimp tacos were good, again a 3.5 for me. We had 2 drinks each. I was disappointed in Del Toro after anticipating going here for months. I was looking for a quick & relatively cheap option for dinner & that's pretty much where my compliments will end. The food had a very processed element to it. I wouldn't go so far as to compare it to a Taco Bell but it definitely lacked a fresh quality. I did however enjoy the "Pollo Adobado". The seasoning wasn't bland at all. The shrimp tacos were virtually tasteless. Same goes for the burrito. The sour cream & salsa wasn't enough to salvage this food. My search for a grail status taco place continues... The restaurant is small & located on a strip with free parking. The staff were nice & the food came out quite quickly. Hibiscus margarita. Really, that's all you need to know. Because I'm the charitable sort, I'll let you in on a few more secrets... but just this one time. Drinks are definitely the star of the show here. Similar to Diversey's Masa Azul, this is a tequila-lovers playground. I am not particularly fond of tequila but when paired with hibiscus and avoiding salt, I find that it goes down nice and smoothly. Be careful about just how smooth, seeing as public transit and taxis are exactly plentiful over here. Since I was driving, I couldn't partake in as many libations as I wanted, so I spent some time on the menu. The bites are small but well-portioned. I am trying to get better about portion control and eating until full, rather than stuffed. The guacamole was fresh and just a wee bit spicy while the queso fundido with shrimp & mushrooms was a bigger plate than I expected and easily sharable. I wasn't that impressed with the lechon taco. After getting a hard sell about it, it was pretty small (a bite; granted, I have a big mouth... but still) and the flavor wasn't remarkable. At the end of the day, it's a lechon taco but you can find plenty of lechon tacos for less that taste the same or better -- in this very neighborhood. Del Toro provides the most fresh Latin Cuisine in the city. I've been to this establishment a few times, and I have yet to be let down. It is street parking only, so be prepared to search. Also, it is a key to get here as early as possible. The space is small and fills up quickly. This past Saturday the restaurant opened at 5 and all tables were occupied before 5:30. The host even informed us of a new "two hour rule" on Fridays and Saturdays. They are asking all guests to keep table sitting time while dining at a maximum of two hours to provide space for new guests, yet you're than welcome to move to the bar after your two hours. The drinks here are a must. They do not skimp on the alcohol. There is a tall spicy one that includes a Modelo beer that seems to be a favorite at the establishment. I came here on a Friday night. My friend lives nearby and we happened to walk by this place by accident. Tequila is my favorite type of alcohol, so we had to go in. Inside, the bouncers were very nice. There was an empty table available, but one guy happened to be just sitting there, so they cleared it for us. Thank you! However, when it came to ordering our drinks and water when we were done, it was the hardest thing ever! We tried to flag down our waitress several times, but she walked past without even looking at us. Aside from the customer service, the guacamole was good. I got the mango margarita, which was tasty. However, I did not like that it was rimmed with that chile lime dip because so much of it fell into the drink that I couldn't finish my entire drink. Disappointment. The atmosphere was alright. There were some loud parties of screaming women, but you can't fix that! I've been here a few times because I love their margaritas and micheladas , they're on of the best in the city ! However the food and the service are not the best . I find that the waiters always look annoyed and try to rush you while at the same time they disappear making it difficult to place and order or get a refill . Waiting time to get a table is also long but you can always stand by the bar and order a drink .
