We just moved back to Canada after 16 years living in Italy and when we bit into the pizza we felt transported back to pizzerias in Italy! Wow. This place has really delicious gourmet pizza and other Italian foods! My boyfriend has been there for lunch, but since I was in the area, he took me here. The pizzas are small enough for one person to be able to finish on their own. Each one having a unique flavor profile made in a wood fire oven. We each got one pizza and tried each other's ... Which in my opinion were both great! I got the pumba, which contained meat balls and my boyfriend got one with mashed potatoes and bacon on it. This is a great addition to the Junction food scene and I've been here three times - tried different pizzas and appetizers, but it somehow feels not as amazing as the Roncy location. It is definitely a place you need to check out if you want to check unique, award-winning pizzas that taste like nothing you've tasted before in the pizza world. The most original pizza I had in here was one with fior di latte cheese, peach, almonds and duck confit - it tasted as good as it sounds. So, the pizzas are GREAT. On the other side, the appetizers and the desserts I've tried are just mediocre - the octopus we ordered as a starter was a tiny bit overcooked and chewy, and the chocolate tarte I got felt a bit hard and dense to eat, almost felt like it was made a couple days before. Cute space with excellent service. The pizza is nothing to rave about. I had the peach katchka confit (fior di latte, duck confit, grilled peach , pea shoots, pecorino, grana, honey, almond, mint) which definitely sounds a lot of interesting than it tastes. There's definitely better places for pizza in Toronto. My main problem here was the dessert we ordered - " Defina Beignets -crème anglaise, berries". The waitress actually recommended that we try this dessert and it ended up being the first time in my life that we actually returned a dessert. First of all there were no berries in this dessert. It was a sour berry sauce so I feel that should be noted in the menu. Second the beignets were actually pizza dough. Literally just balls of fried dense salted pizza dough drizzled with sour berry sauce. I get the sweet and savoury mix sometimes, but trust me, this did NOT work. I feel like calling these beignets on the menu is quite deceiving and I would be surprised if anyone found this delicious. With so many amazing Italian restaurants in Toronto, this is definitely not a place you need to check out. read more

What a great find! I've driven by this cute little place so many times and finally went in a few weeks back and then went again the very next week. Atmosphere is great with very friendly service. I've now tried 4 different types of pizza, the red hot chilli pepper one was the best. The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is because our Caesar salad was a bit heavy on anchovy paste, the die hards might really enjoy it but for the common folk (me) it was a little too strong. I have been wanting to give this place a try for ages- it's in the neighborhood and I have heard good things. I went for dinner last night and everything was wonderful. The service was warm and friendly, the food was excellent and the restaurant itself had really good vibes and a cool laid back decor. We shared two pizzas, by suggestion from our server, one of them was a four mushroom pizza and I believe the other was called summer salmon, with smoked salmon on top. The crust was perfect and the toppings were super flavorful. We also shared a kale and parsley salad with feta to start, which was fantastic. The portions were large enough that we would have been fine with just the salad and one pizza, but now we have leftovers for dinner tonight! I would rush back here, especially after having some disappointing experiences other equally hyped up restaurants lately. I will bring my family here when they come to town, as it's a large space which seems to accommodate big groups. read more

Visit 1: 5-star The octopus - a main-stay of the Roncesvalles location - did not disappoint. Some of the best in the world! The Campbell Park pizza - a source of neighbourhood pride! After two bites I knew this was to be our standing order. An incredible mix of toppings melding together perfectly. A $5 Thursday night cocktail special was a fantastic accompaniment. Visit 2: 4-star The octopus - for the first time ever - was sub-par. Chewy, likely overcooked and with very little flavour. And perhaps it was spiciness leftover from our other pizza, but I could swear the Campbell Park had a spicy sauce this time. For me it was just unnecessary, but for others with a low-tolerance for spice it was a disappointment. Visit 3: 3-star For the first time ever we took a pass on the octopus hoping time will heal our wounds. Meanwhile the Campbell Park had me doubting my memory - the toppings seemed clunky and under-cooked, which brought attention to the dough which seemed chewy in places, and burned in others. The pizza arrived lightening-fast, which at first was welcomed, but then suspicious. Was also disappointed to find the absence of a Thursday night cocktail special! Fortunately, a shining light was the Pompei - every once in a while I try an anchovy pizza in hopes of acquiring the taste, and this time did it. Defina Wood Fired is a new addition to the Junction Triangle so we booked in last minute for a Friday night dinner. Arrived around 6pm and our table for two was ready to go. My DC was running a few minutes behind so it gave me some time to eye the menu. She is gluten-free so I wanted to make sure there would be some options for her. When she arrived, we quickly ordered two glasses of white wine and were going to order the meatballs (no go since there are bread crumbs in there) and share a pizza on a gluten-free crust. We were a bit disappointed when our waitress told us that they were out of gluten-free crust! We reorganized our order and got crispy green beans ($10), brussel sprouts with bacon ($10) and the flank steak ($19) to share. Seemed a bit weird to be in a pizza place and not order pizza but I didn't want to eat a whole one to self and she didn't have a gluten-free option. Service was fine for the most part, a bit slow between the main and dessert delivery - we got the creme brulee ($9) to share. And our busboy dropped a small container oil when he came to pick up our dishes, which splashed everywhere and left oil stains on my jeans! Might be back to try the pizza but will leave gluten-free friend at home next time. read more

An excellent Italian restaurant! The pizzas were incredible, and tasted like real Italian pizza! It was one of the best pizzas (if not the best) I have ever had in Canada. We had a craving for "Wood Fired" pizza for dinner. We haven't had an opportunity to have a meal at Defina Wood Fired . We booked our reservation and found parking on Symington Ave. The interior was very rustic/ industrial and noisy . The restaurant was very busy. We sat at a table next to the window/sliding doors. There was a cold draft that unfortunately was hindering our dinner experience . I ordered a cocktail, a Bill Hicks. The gin, bourbon and ginger ale was a nice combination . We had the warm olives with garlic and feta. We shared the Honey Crisp Kale salad. It was a great start to our meal. We decided to order the Pumba pizza and wild mushroom pizzas. We loved them both. So disappointed, I've heard so many great things on the anticipation of this place opening. Couldn't wait to try it. I've eaten in once and done take out twice! Every time the food has been perfect, so delicious. I had started take out as the food was still great, though customer service was less than satisfactory, so I was not interested in dining in again. Plates were dropped on the table and our order was wrong on top of not being checked on. First take out was great, quick and easy. Though I recently went for takeout again and though the food was still delicious, customer service was again sub par. Instead of taking my number and confirming they knew what I wanted to order, ( we reviewed the order already) they quickly got off the phone. So when I arrived for pick up, not only did they not know exactly what I ordered, to start it, they were out of one of the other dishes I had ordered and felt the need to ask me twice about it. As a loyal customer of the Roncesvalles location I was looking forward to trying this location. While I am sure the pizza is good, I wouldn't know as we were never offered a table. We arrived at 7:30 on a Sat night. There were several open tables and people leaving and nobody else waiting as far as I could tell. As I was used to the smaller Roncesvalles location where we always had to wait a few minutes for a table, I was surprised at the empty tables. We were only 2 people and willing to sit anywhere but the VERY snotty hostess was clearly not experienced or not interested in building a loyal customer base as she told us to come back at 9. Seeing as I was with a teenager, that obviously wasn't going to work for us. It was quite a surprising encounter and as I wasn't in the mood to deal with her attitude we lef. Not sure I will try again. There are other places to get pizza in the city. read more

The difference between my review being a 3-star and 5-star rating is the service delivery. The food was incredible, it's just too bad I had to wait 2 hours to be able to taste it. This rating by no means is reflective of the hostess, waitstaff, or bartender (they were exceptional), but more of a failure on the part of management. We came in on a Friday at 7PM, anticipating that we were going to have to wait a bit for a table. Throughout the day I tried calling to make a reservation, but no answer (and I could not reserve online or leave a message). We were told a 30-40 minute wait, but were confused with the sheer amount of reserved tables that were clearly not claimed, including a table of 16 reserved for 7:30 that sat empty until we left at 10PM. Once we got table, it took considerable time for our drinks, apps, and pizzas to arrive, and in between these long waits no one cared to check on us (except the wonderful sommelier who was exceptional). Perhaps I will eat here again, but I will definitely come at a less busier time. read more

We had a wonderful valentines dinner at pizzeria defina,.. it was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. The atmosphere was very inviting, staff was friendly and attentive. Ordered the Napoletana style pizza and was very disappointed, not bad for regular pizza but was in now way Napoletana style pizza the crust has no rise, and was way harder and denser then Napoletana also they said there was no salt in the crust which to me tasted very bland. read more

I live in the neighbourhood and I've been to Defina Wood Fired many times before and I thought I'd take my family, 2 of whom were from out of town. I made a reservation more than 2 weeks earlier for a table of 6. We showed up on time for our reservation with an extra person, my nephew who'd pleasantly surprised us with a visit, and were told we could not be seated. I could see from the front that there were 3 six tops, among others, that were sitting empty. I asked if he could add a chair to an end, he said no. I asked if we could have the 6 top along a bench so we could put 4 people on the bench, he said no. He didn't ask us to give him half an hour while he figured something out. He said there was nothing he could do, but did tell me, "if you have 30 minutes, I'll explain it to you". I love Toronto's food scene and partake regularly. I have never experienced such a blasé approach to customer satisfaction. read more

So disappointed! I would like to start by saying that I have been to the Roncey location numerous times and love it! However, this location should take a few pointers from Roncey. I arrived at 7pm on a Saturday to a less than half full restaurant. Upon entry, we were advised that if we wanted a table, we would have an hour to eat as there was a reservation, which we declined (who can eat and have a bottle of wine in an hour without being rushed). He then advised us that a table had just sat and we could wait an hour an a half until they left. There was never an apology or explanation as to why we could sit at a table when more than half the restaurant was empty. I would like to add that the bar was suggested as an option but no one was in the restaurant and we did not want to sit awkwardly at the bar. Management should learn a few things in customer service. I will not return to any Defina restaurant after this experience. read more

Beautiful space, nice and attentive service, but terribly underwhelming food. My husband and I spent over $100 for food that was forgettable, bland and overpriced. I liked my first visit to the Roncy location so I really had high hopes but was disappointed. The octopus and calamari were just okay and quite expensive for the portions (I understand seafood is expensive but I've had great seafood elsewhere for less), the wings were supposedly cooked over the wood fire but tasted like they were boiled and had no sauce, and then the pizza was just the worst. They clearly cooked the rapini just beforehand and threw it on the pizza which created so much water on the pizza that it diluted the flavour. The crust was soggy from the excess water and I basically just ate it because I felt bad not to. Toronto has so many restaurants that places need to step up their quality if they want returning customers and overall I'm disappointed that I spent money on this level of quality food. read more
