Terroni on Adelaide is a beautiful Italian restaurant with a lot of character and history, set inside a former courthouse building from 1852 that still shows off its dramatic ceilings, fireplaces, and sunlit atrium. It's a dining experience you don't see every day in Toronto. Even the washrooms are memorable, tucked away in the basement in what used to be old jail cells, which adds to the charm and gives the whole place a bit of personality. We went for an early Sunday dinner before a concert at Massey Hall. The restaurant got pretty busy as the evening went on, but it never felt chaotic. The atmosphere is lovely and lively, a great choice for a special night out or a pre-show meal. We started with Calamari alla Griglia with mixed greens, capers, onions, and fresh tomatoes. It was a fresh, bright appetizer with good balance. For mains, my date had the Spaghetti in Canna a Mare with clams, mussels, calamari, scallop, and tiger shrimp in a tomato sauce. The menu described it as mildly spicy, but it definitely had a noticeable kick. Still, the flavours were really good. I ordered the Ravioli al Brasato with braised beef, butter, sage, and parmigiano. It was tasty and comforting, though portion-wise I could have used a few more ravioli. I was still a bit hungry after and honestly double the size would have been perfect for me. For dessert we shared the Tiramisu with espresso-soaked savoiardi, mascarpone, and cocoa. I had an amaro while my date finished with zambuca. A sweet and satisfying way to wrap up the meal. The service was friendly, though drinks came out a bit slower than expected. Terroni's food is tasty, the setting is gorgeous, and it's easy to see why locals keep coming back. I wish I could say I enjoyed Terroni more. The venue itself was not held in the main restaurant. The company I work at booked out some of the upper floors for an event. There were four flights of stairs to get up to the first floor with the bar and main dining area. There was another two flights of stairs to get to the upper bar (which I was too tired to walk up to). The drinks at the bar were good and the staff were all great. We started with passed apps. Some of the flavour combinations were just off (the skewer with fruit, cheese and something else) - like they paired the wrong cheese with the fruit. The meal itself was a seat down meal (family style) which did take over two hours to complete for the amount of guests that were present (over 200 ppl). My favorite dish was the tomato and mozza salad. My most disappointed dish was the ragu pasta. Though containing a good amount of meat it was not saucy at all. The pizza was the brocolini was good as well. The reason I gave this restaurant three stars is strictly for the lack of elevator and the food quality vs the price. I should start my admitting that I absolutely hated my experience at their Trinity Bellwoods location. I never tried Terroni again until my bf really wanted to come to a different location. So I walked in doing my best to have no expectations and just enjoy the experience. Staff at the hosting desk are super welcoming and friendly. Servers seem to be in a rush to get you outta there. That being said, I actually prefer that cause it means they're trying to go as fast as they can. Food was nice. I actually had the carpaccio at my last Terroni visit and it was a bad experience. Stringy, thick, not enough arugula. This was totally different. Amazing olive oil flavour, wonderfully delicate slices of meat, lots of arugula and lovely, fresh parmesan. Loved it, though the price is a bit up there. I had the limone pasta which was beautiful. Texture of pasta felt al dente and perfect. Lemony without being too citric and a lovely creamy texture. I loved the sprinkle of capers and spinach. The mushroom pasta my bf had was alright. I thought it was a bit boring compared to the one I ordered, but it was good. Genuinely would be happy to return for that lemony pasta... Maybe I'd try a pizza too next time. The washrooms are downstairs and pretty clean. Came here on a random weeknight before a game to have dinner. I was shocked seeing the size of the restaurant one you walk in. I didn't expect it to be as big as it is and it had a cool atmosphere with different parts you could be seated at. Service was good, no complaints- quick and efficient. I wouldn't know how it is on a weekend though. Food was great. They had many pastas or pizzas to choose from. Enjoyed our choices. The pasta texture was good and pizza dough also had good taste! Terroni? Was shocked to read that slur of a name. Let's be clear - I kinda liked it. It made me feel naught. And let's be clearer - iykyk, I can use the word Terroni, you the reader likely cannot. Now back to where I wanted to begin. Terroni? More like borderline terribili. Terroni? More like I'd rather eat dirt straight off the terra. I understand very little, my pet mule Paco can tell you as much, but my understanding was that the Italian population here in Canada was not only plentiful but highly respectable. I don't feel misunderstood, I feel misled. But I don't judge a book by its cover. I trust the Canadian Italians that I know are legit. Maybe the cold air got to this joint. This place came highly recommended. I'd never recommend anyone here. And although that be true, I did have a wonderful time with the wonderful company of Canada. I also must be honest. The sights are borderline spectacular in size, scope and sketch. Just a massive massive place. Beautiful understairs. Cozy downstairs. Now the actual meal. The apps were ok. The wine was great (I don't drink wine like that so it's comical that I even said that but when in Rome hahahahahaha.) The entrees though. Literally none blew my biscuit of a monkey mind. None made my glutes clench so hard that a solo index finger rose to my perched lips. None bequeathed me to bequeath my small, unspectacular, intangible, and non-existent estate to any beautiful Canadian creature that walked by that night. The sauce just wasn't good and any red sauce tasted the same as the other. They recycle the same sauce and call it something else. That's a federal crime in my eyes. This joint wouldn't last a second on the mean streets of NY. That's a lie, the gullible new amsterdamians would eat this place up. Gaudy and grandeur, but no lure for I. Oh Canada. For our dinner the first night, we met up with an old friend of mine and he suggested going to Terroni. Situated in what was formerly the courthouse and jail of Toronto at one point, this place offered a unique atmosphere. It was a very grand space, very over the top, with lots of large art and lighting to help fill the space. The basement which housed the jail cells were now wine cellars, which was a clever use of the space. The staff were friendly, seating us upon arrival when I told them we had a reservation. They were attentive, checking on us and r offering refills when needed. It was a dimly lit space so getting too many pictures was a bit difficult. The menu offered many tasty Italian options. Being a bit overwhelmed by the menu, I got the spinach and ricotta ravioli, which were good, but a bit lacking with no added protein, or meat option. I would have definitely enjoyed it more with a little more added to it, the cream sauce was rich and delicious, but with only 7 ravioli it just wasn't enough. Do bad choice on my part. Lively, warm and elegant ambiance. Came to have a girls dinner with my wonderful cousin. We both had red wine, I had the one recommended for Cab Sav lovers. We shared the oyster mushroom salad, I had the truffle/Italian sausage spaghetti and then we both shared the tiramisu. Wine was lovely, food was delicious and dessert was divine. I wasn't the craziest about the mushroom oyster salad; they were fried but not super warm and then it was just arugula and there wasn't a ton of flavor. My entree absolutely made up for that; positively delicious. And I could have eaten a gallon of the tiramisu! Our server, Jordon, was fast, friendly and attentive. We go to Canada for professional meetings twice a year for more than 25 years with a core group of people. One of them is a REAL foodie and he helped me choose restaurants. He recently passed away and I wanted to do a Celebration of Life dinner in his honor on a SUNDAY night with a smaller group in Toronto. I was at a loss because the three favorites were CLOSED. I asked around and TERRONI came up. I checked the reviews and gave them a call. I explained the situation and the person I spoke to said "no problem" and put us at a quiet table in an alcove. This unique Italian restaurant has been here for many years and doesn't disappoint if you want good food with great atmosphere. The restaurant is huge with a main dining area and some large private rooms. Built in the old courthouse they have jail cell doors protecting the wine and washrooms, paying homage to the buildings historic past. Service was fantastic- our server was super friendly and helpful. He gave us recommendations on the food and even local things to do. Food wise - the zucchini stuffed flowers were amazing as a starter. Complimentary bread with olive oil and peppers were very good. My wife had the ravioli (good flavours but small portions) and I had the seafood spaghetti. Good portion size and amazing flavours. I noticed the seating here is a bit tight. We were seated in the area with the skylight and our table felt a little cramped as we were seated so close to other couples. Our server was very kind and attentive, but he was pretty hard to get a hold of at times. We were started off with some fresh bread & olive oil. I wish they would also given us some balsamic vinegar to mix the oil with and possibly warmed up the bread. For drinks, I tried both the Lilli & Terroni Sour. Had heard so many glowing reviews but went for Valentines dinner and was highly disappointed. The Pizza was served with no cutlery, and when we finally managed to cut it, It slid off and the dough benath was completely uncercooked and thin. I spent over an hour in the resuarant just to get mediocre bland pasta, and a pizza that looked like it was cooked by a child and to not anything and have everything sent back. The only reason I'm giving this two stars is because the drinks we're decent, but completely ruined my partner and I's Valentines dinner. read more

This was a great find for creative Italian food at the edge of Old Toronto. The restaurant is in a historic building with lots of charm and character. The interior at parts is nearly three stories high. It has a lot of visual interest, and they've further embellished with Italian posters. photos and other colorful items. We made a reservation and were seated immediately in a back area. There appear to be an array of interesting rooms. Seating is packed tight, but the vibe is youthful and very energetic. The room seemed to be full of excited conversation. The menu has a good number of choices. We selected to share a Giuggiolosa salad that was excellent. It was fresh, flavorful, and the dressing simple and perfect to not overpower the ingredients. The grilled red peppers and exceptional gorganzola cheese were a highlight. The drizzle of honey was almost undetectable, which was fine as too much could ruin it. I went on to choose the Garganelli Geppetto. Wow, it was good! The pasta is an interesting rolled tube, small but such a great shape. There's spicy sausage, dandelion leaves, and a very light sauce. The dish was superb and just the right portion. The only misstep which I found awkward at best was I was served my dish, and just as I was about to take a bite, a wait person came swooping in and said I had the wrong dish, swept it away and replaced it with another... that frankly didn't look much different. The service, however, was excellent, and our prime waiter was terrific and very astute. We also had the complimentary bread, which was fresh, warm, and quite appealing. I sat on the bar and ordered Pasta. That's what they got mostly so the Pappadelle it was. It tasted good when I got it but I realized just a bit too late after I was already 4 forks in, because I was hungry that it was just luke warm. Like it was left on the counter for too long before serving. It was tasty but just didn't feel fresh. I mentioned it and got an apology after a while. I also had a dessert, an espresso, a Sambucca and some wine. When the bill came it was full force. I didn't expected that they would try to compensate much but something. A gesture of good will and apology like a couple of bucks off the meal or a free glass of wine or something as an actual backup to the verbal apology but there was nothing. I am not a guy who is looking for a free meal. I pay extra if it's good but I do expect some realization that something was wrong besides a cheesy apology. It is sad because the place came highly recommended and failed miserably. Maybe I just had too high expectations? Came here for dinner on Thursday. Nice ambiance in the place but quite a bit of stairs. Decor is nice and there are what looks like communal tables as well as individuals. Started off with a Spinosa to drink (a bit pricy $16 but it is downtown and the drink was tasty). It was Averna, ginger beer and lemon juice. I liked it but all cocktails here are like $16. Oh well, treat yourself. I shared a pizza and a pasta with a friend. Starting with the pizza , had the Bufalina, which is a nice light pizza, tastes wood oven. It was tomato, mozzarella and basil. Basil I think was just decor as there was only 2 leaves, but taste wise, it was a good pizza. Added some of the complimentary chili in olive oil and it was a hit. It was downtown so $22 for the pizza I would assume is normal. The pasta we shared was a Tonnarelli alla norcina, which is a pasta with their home made sausage with black truffle. I'm usually not a big fan of the the pungency of truffle but my friend ordered it and I found it not over powering. I actually liked the flavour of this dish and the sausage was very flavourful. Pasta was el dente and the dish was nice. Table next to me had the pappardelle, which looked really good , so if I went back would definitely try that. Overall experience was that it was a good dinner. Not sure I would go out of my way to go back, but if in the area again, would go back for a nice dinner. We booked out the basement tables for a lunch event with a client. There was a prix fixe menu, everything served family style. Overall, the food was fairly average (in comparison to the influx of other Italian restaurants downtown). There were some hits and misses: for appetizer we had the caprese salad (simple textures but fresh ingredients) and the fried calamari (taste was fine but way too much batter). The pizzas were very mediocre - I wasn't a huge fan of the tomato sauce they used on the margherita pizza, there was something off about the flavour balance. The pastas were pretty ordinary, and unfortunately weren't quite hot when served. The highlight was definitely the excellent tiramisu - the jar it came in was labelled "Sud Forno" so I will just get my fix there next time instead. Service was fast and friendly - but we did go as a large group and presumably paid a hefty gratuity so I can't speak to other dining experiences. The set up is great for this location and doesn't disappoint when on a first date. Lots of options from the menu and a good test to see how/who splits the pricey bill. Stay for ages if the date goes well and you want to talk more. But would you come back? Probably not because the food is average and the prices don't reflect that mediocrity. It would be nice if I had bread to scoop it. Also, to eat the finely diced tomato and calamari together, it would be nicer to have a spoon. I thought of asking for a spoon but the server seemed to be very busy so I ate without it. The spaghetti was cooked al-dente with a well-balanced lemon cream sauce. The carpaccio was tender but with way too much Reggiano. The seasoning and presentation were simple, not sophisticated, and boring - but the beef quality was good. I shared the items with my girlfriends. But there were no serving plates and serving utensils brought to the table. We had to wait for some time to ask for them. Also, in the middle of each dish (after finishing more than half of each dish), the server asked if we wanted pepper over dishes. Forget it, too late. We said no thanks. Overall, good enough to enjoy a great chatting night with my girlfriends in a comfortable seating :). It was a weekday night, but when we were leaving (around 7) the tables were almost full. Our table was ready promptly at 7:30 We had arrived early and waited in the bar area, checked out the menu. My wife and I typically order an app, two mains to share, and (sometimes) dessert. To Finish: I heard really good things about the tiramisu, my wife also has a sweet tooth. We ordered one to share, it was just enough. TIramisu was light enough and wasn't overkill in ordering. The hype met the expectations. The Drink: The restaurant also has a make your own gin and tonic special - My wife ordered an elderflower tonic with gin - she found the aromas very pleasant and was not too sweet to drink. The Service: While we arrived early, our table was ready right on time, after we were seated our server came almost right away. She stepped away for a sec to grab us water. We were ready to order by the time she came back. After ordering she immediately came back with some much needed bread, olive oil and some chili oil. (My wife gets hangry so this was perfect) Our burrata came out quickly (we also did not know there would be bread with it) After maybe 10-15 minutes, we got our mains. This review is just on the takeout at Terroni so mostly reflective on that. I ordered through an app and did pickup. - Tonnarelli alla Norcina: One of their most popular pasta dishes at Terroni. This pasta was definitely one of the nice pasta dishes I've ever had and was good quality. The flavours went well together and had a good amount of meat. Though, I personally wouldn't get this unless it's a special occasion because it's quite expensive for a pasta dish (around $28-$29). - Tiramisu: This dessert is always a must try whenever I try out Italian places! The tiramisu was very creamy, and quite rich flavour. It was quite small though for what you pay for. Would I go here again? I would definitely want to experience how dine-in would be like but it's more of a rare occasion place for me as it's on the high end side. A perfect meal after a full day! We came in around 6:15 pm on a Thursday. The wait was 45 minutes for a two top, so we sat at the bar. No one else was sitting there, so service was prompt (and friendly!). Our server started us off with complimentary bread and two dipping sauces. Bread tasted fresh and house-made, we loved the fluffiness and crunch combo. The first sauce was an olive oil. The second sauce was a red pepper-based oil. If you're not a spice person, I do NOT recommend! I only dipped my bread in the sauce part, not picking up any of the pepper bits, and it was incredibly hot! For our meal, we ordered the: --Margherita pizza ($18). It's a Margherita pizza, so there's not many ways to fail this. But it really was spectacular. It came uncut (that's just their thing I guess). It was light and soft, with a crunchy crust. Cheese was perfect amount and tasted great with the crisp basil. --Rigatoni alla Norma ($22). This was a ziti-type pasta with a richly flavored red sauce and sliced eggplant. Terroni hit it out of the park with this one! The sauce had a sweet touch and the eggplant was perfectly sautéed and seasoned. We shared both meals and scarfed them down--in and out of the restaurant in 45 minutes. By the time we left, the line was to the door. The inside was nice to look at, the building used to be an old courthouse and you see gorgeous touches in all the details, from the crown moldings on the ceilings to the massive hanging clock in the lobby. My only suggestion would be to trade the pepper oil for a balsamic with the opening bread. The pepper had just too much heat and I could still taste it when taking my first bite of the pasta. We came here on a Wednesday night to celebrate my sister's birthday. We made a reservation and our table was ready and right in front of the entrance. The restaurant used to be a courthouse and the basement has jail cells! Cool! Most of the architecture has been preserved inside. Once you enter there's a bar on the left and takeout and food delivery pickup by the hostess area. We ordered various a charcuterie board, grilled calamari and various pasta dishes. There is complimentary bread served with olive oil and red peppers. The bread was fluffy in the middle and crispy on the crust. The board had a small selection of cheeses, prosciutto, mortadella, and salami. There's honey, olives and small breadsticksbon the side. We were hungry so this board was done fast! Thinly slice meats were tasty and goes well with the cheese and honey. Don't forget to get a bottle of wine! They have huge selection of wine ranging from 5oz / 1/2 btl / full btl. Some vintage selections are by the bottle. We selected the 2018 Montefalco Rosso DOC. The wine was very smooth and went well with our charcuterie board and pasta. I ordered the Spaghetti in Canna a Mare which consists of spaghetti with scallops, shrimps, mussels, clams and calamari. This is a seafood paradise with spaghetti and pomodoro tomato sauce. There's a hint of spiciness in the sauce. Hit the spot! My wife ordered the Ravioli di Zio Paperone - filled with duck confit, roasted butternut squash, oyster button mushrooms and Parmigiano. The duck was highlighted in the ravioli. There was a generous portion amd really filling. I didn't try the other pastas but everyone enjoyed their food. The desserts we ordered were tiramisu and Torta Calda al Cioccolato and gelato. Torta was amazing it was a flourless dark chocolate cake with white chocolate ganache. The cake was warm and had a liquid chocolate centre. Very rich but irresistible. The experience was great only downside was the grilled calamari was never served. The order either got lost in the kitchen or served to another table. The manager did come by to apologize and offered us an Italian liqueur to make up for the mix-up. Secondly our orders did not come out at the same time. If you are looking for an authentic taste of Italy come to Terroni on Adelaide. Nice ambience to go with great food and vino. My friends and I saw good things about this restaurant so we snagged a last minute reservation. Unfortunately, it failed to live up to our expectations overall. I really like the ambiance of the restaurant though there were some... interesting design choices. Namely some creepy dolls hanging on the far wall. Bad vibes. Service was attentive and checked in with us frequently. We ordered the crispy mushroom salad to start, as well as a gin and tonic, a peach Bellini, and the Terroni sour. The drinks were good, but the crispy mushrooms were just ok. It was served on a ton of arugula and some parm, but it was a bit dry and lacking in flavor. The mushrooms did get nice and crispy though. We got complimentary bread and olive oil as well. The bread had a good texture and tasted fresh but it was cold. The olive oil tasted interesting but without balsamic I didn't enjoy it as much as I usually would. Unfortunately, our main dishes continued the trend of kinda ok kinda meh kinda bad. We got the duck ravioli, seafood pasta, and bruma (carbonara) pizza. The duck ravioli had great flavor and I enjoyed the earthy, pate-like duck filling. However, the pasta was strangely tough and chewy. The sauce was also just vaguely savory and lacking complexity. I was hoping to use the free bread to mop up the sauce but it wasn't worth the extra space in my stomach. The seafood pasta had the opposite problem. The pasta noodles themselves were perfectly Al dente, but the flavors were not enjoyable. It tasted like plain, overly salted tomato sauce, and was fishy in a bad way. Some of the seafood was cooked well (squid) but the clams/mussels were unpleasantly mushy and I definitely tasted sand in some of them. Finally the pizza was the biggest disappointment. Not only was the crust suuuuuper tough and rubbery, the pizza was bland and only tasted like the salted meat on top. It felt like the pizza wasn't baked enough. There was no bubbly, melty cheese, and the dough was way too dense. If Terroni insists on serving pizzas to us uncut, please create a crust that actually allows us to cut it thanks. Overall I've definitely had far better Italian food elsewhere, and do not plan on returning except maybe for a drink. Perhaps we didn't order the right dishes, but when an Italian place stumbles on pasta and pizza doughs, the backbone of their dishes, you can find me with my eyebrows raised in mild disappointment. read more

Dined here with a friend in late May '23. We had booked ahead but the place was absolutely packed when we arrived. The hostess found us a spot on the delightful patio at the rear where we able to enjoy the pleasant weather without the noise and crush of the main restaurant. Our waitress was one of those blessed with 360 degree vision, so we were always well refreshed. Food was quite excellent, ambience perfect and prices very reasonable. Overall a great experience. And you have to check out the bathrooms in the basement! Definitely one to visit again next time I'm in the big city. read more

Made reservations and came here before a show we went to at the Sony centre. It was my friend and our moms that we took with us. We were promptly seated, and our server even got the sommelier we could understand which type of wine we wanted and I have to say we got the perfect pair. We ordered three pass the dishes and two pizzas to share between the four of us, and it was the right amount of food. This location sits within an old courthouse with old prison cells in the basement and all. Makes for a fun atmosphere - especially for the history buffs. Menu and food are good. Friendly, attentive service. I tried a few different starters including the calamari and burrata. My actual entree - the bolognese- was only okay. read more
