I love baked goods--LOVE them--so I had already bookmarked DeEtta's Bakery, when someone, some angelic being who knew of my love for yeast, doughnuts, and Boston Creams, urged me to come on a donut day, Friday and Saturday. I have been here now several times and have sampled a good number of doughnuts and other baked goods and can attest to the all-natural, high-quality, delicious products offered. Most things are between $2 and $3 dollars, but are WELL worth the price.
Offering cookies, bars, cakes, and pastries, I've had a chance to sample a LOT of different things, most of which I liked and some of which I loved. If you're like me and you love sweets but don't like them to be too sugary, then DeEtta's is going to be a pretty safe bet for you, and you'll find that most--if not all--of their baked goods have JUST the right amount of sugar. I will admit that there are a few things that I didn't particularly care for, but it was mainly due to personal preferences and you may in fact find them delicious: the scones (which I found too sweet, and in general I like a drier, less dense scone than this one was), the brownies (which actually tasted pretty good, but were fudgy, which I really don't like), and unfortunately the chocolate chip cookie (which is otherwise perfect in flavor and chewy texture, but I am not a fan of the whole sea-salt-sprinkled-on-things fad, preferring the salt IN the dessert). Again, you might love these things as there is nothing inherently bad about them, I just didn't care for them myself. NOW, as for the things that I like, at the top are:
Double Chocolate Chip Cookie--ugh, SO good! It's chewy, it's chocolaty, and has the perfect amount of sugar.
The DeEtta's Delight Bar--topped with delicious, buttery streusel on top of a layer of amazing chocolate that isn't as tame as most milk-chocolate but not as bold as semi-sweet.
Oatmeal Cream Pie--don't let the name fool you, it's really just buttercream frosting sandwiched between two oatmeal cookies; the frosting is very sweet, bordering on to sweet, but those tasty oatmeal twins really balance the whole thing out.
Spinach And Feta Croissant Cup--this guy has often served as my lunch, and, believe me, it is quite hearty, as the croissant itself is denser than free-form croissants that are free to expand; I admit that I wish the croissant was given more space to expand, but the thing isn't any less delicious.
I could list a couple more things, but I think I'll run out of space if I do so I'll have to move on to the doughnuts. My God the doughnuts. I haven't tried all the ones I'm interested in trying, but the ones I have tried are awesome, and they have the best cake doughnuts I've ever had, but my favorites are:
The Apple Fritter--real apples with real cinnamon (which is the elusive Bigfoot in the doughnut world), one of the best doughnuts I've ever eaten.
Some Kind Of Doughnut With Sour Cream--clearly I'm not sure what to say about it or how to describe it, but it was moist, and oh so flavorful.
AND FINALLY, ONE OF THE TOP TEN REASONS I HAVE TO LIVE:
Boston. Cream. Doughnut. Know anyone who won't shut up? stuff one of these in his or her face and you might get a few minutes of peace. They're big, STUFFED with silky, rich, perfectly-sweet cream, and topped with delicious chocolatey frosting. If DeEtta's ever closed, I would mourn the loss of this doughnut. I talked about it so much that--for my birthday--I got a DeEtta's gift card, plus a Boston Cream Doughnut, from people at work, a banana republic gift card, plus TWO Boston Cream Doughnuts, from a friend, and a visa gift card, plus.....you guessed it!...a Boston Cream Doughnut from my parents. Greatest. Doughnut. Ever.
Clearly I love this place, but I think I would rate it five stars even if all they sold was that damn doughnut and they threw it at me and kept my change. I would put up with Soup Nazi conditions here, but the service experience has been as delightful as the products sold.
In closing, I would like to thank Melanie B for introducing me to DeEtta's and ruining/improving my life forever. Thanks Melly B!! My tongue and my tailor [ ;-) ] thank you, but my belly and my scale aren't talking to you anymore! :-P read more
