This is probably the best Indian food that I have eaten in the whole of bay area. They had great Pani Puri (Golgoppas) as apéritif and then a whole lot of things for the buffet. I guess the day I went there, they had Gujarati food and the other day, they had Kathiawadi which I didn't understand what it was. However, the food was excellent. The food here is home made which is the differentiating factor from other Indian restaurants. The service was also pretty nice. The ambiance is very informal. Go with a friend that you know really well, not with someone that you are meeting on a first date. read more

Authentic Gujju homestyle (veg) food. I went for the lunch buffet. The place was small, nothing fancy but clean. Not a huge buffet, but all the items there were good. The food was not like the commercialized buffets like you find in most indian places - the was very home-cooked style, fresh and delicious. It's vegetarian and gujju food by the way. The pooris were freshly made, like home made (not dry) and constantly refilled, and on the table they served fresh made soft chappatis (whole wheat tortillas). But the best was the Shrikand! I went back here the other day and couldn't believe how the quality has deteriorated from when I went a few years ago. I remember the food five years ago as being light, homestyle and flavorful with a medly of vegetable dishes, and a dhal with greens in it. It was delicious. Now they seem to be economizing by using almost exclusively potato in all the dishes. Spuds are cheap but are probably the unhealthiest veggie possible. I have health issues, eat generally low-carb, high veggie/fiber,and I went to deedee's thinking I could enjoy some well-prepared vegetarian dishes. Technically veggie, yes but a high carb, starch fest. Nightshades can kill you Deedee, or at least give you diabesity. When I indulge, I prefer fries in small quantities. A small fry. Here, I got a boatload of bland starch. The flavor of the dishes wasn't even worth it. Bland, mushy and oily. They know better. They're evidently phoning it in. It was unbelievable to have four of the dishes contain mostly potato, and the remaining dishes consist of mostly water and sugar. I felt terrible after eating there. Very disappointing. read more

So what is unique about this place is that they have a different lunch buffet every weekend. This weekend they had the Gujurati buffet and it was delicious. It was very much like home made food, not too oily and greasy yet extremely delicious. Will definitely be coming back to this place again to try their other lunch options! Bay area has too many Indian restaurants but almost all of them are avg or below avg. This place stands out. Its a mom and pop joint with a veg buffet. Food is mostly homecooked style. Thats the big attraction for me as I am sick of the template buffet that every other Indian restaurant dishes out. The cuisine is a hybrid gujrati and marathi. Although nothing is sweet like it is in traditional gujrati style. That would be a deal breaker for me. They make the most amazing dal. You can just have that with steamed rice and eat nothing else. But, if u r happy with buffets at bombay garden or turmeric or any other place with a big spread... then you should avoid this... this is a small and simple spread... food not very spice and not greasy at all. I'm surprised this place has only a 3.5 rating. The food here is awesome. Next best thing to home cooked food. For a meat eater like me , who hates the word 'vegetarian', this place was a refresher. The spices aren't too over powering and the taste is awesome. $10 for buffet is not bad. Bhel was good, so was the shrikand. If you want good homestyle rajasthani, marathi or gujarati food, this is the place. We love the buffet here, and the family that runs it is warm. We used to frequent them in mountain view, but we still make the drive down to Santa clara - because of the paani puris, the uundhius, the rotlis, etc. Not your standard north indian and south indian fare. Deedee's started out as a home business back in the day and today has its own little space in Santa Clara. One of the first things one notices on entering the restaurant is a collage of photos of the owners and other patrons of Deedee's through the years. What Deedee's aims to achieve is to bring the "at home" dining experience beyond the confines of the home. The space inside the restaurant is limited and I can imagine that it would get really crowded during peak lunch hour. I happened to visit around 6 pm on a Sunday and there were l few other families there at that early hour! If one plans to visit this place, then it would be a good idea to visit during the weekend when they offer one of their regional buffet spreads- on each weekend, they have a regional special- Gujarati, Maharashtrian, Rajasthani, Kathiawadi buffet choices. We went on a day when they served the Kathiawadi buffet. What really stood out for us in the buffet was the Shrikhand and the Undhiyu. The rest of the dishes were also mildly spiced and rotis were served hot at the table. The bhel and pani puri were also pretty good. At $12 a plate, a meal at Deedee's doesn't come off easy on the wallet. But I guess their Shrikhand alone is worth 3 stars in my book! read more

I love Deedee's! I just returned from another trip to India a month ago where, for the first time, I was a guest in people's homes. Deedee's is just like the food I ate there, and it's some of the best tasting Indian food I've eaten since I moved to San Jose from LA a year ago. Deedee's is a small, humble, hole-in-the-wall kind of place. Rickety tables and chairs crowded into an undecorated storefront in a strip mall housing mostly nail and hair salons. It is just the sort of place I love - a family restaurant where they put their time and resources into the food rather than the ambiance. I arrived just as the lunch rush was starting and happily filled a steel thali plate with hot fresh veggie curries from the small steam table. The selection wasn't huge, but who cares, when what you're eating is so satisfying? I wish I knew the names of the dishes - I'll ask the next time I'm there. Unlike many places, where all the dishes taste generic and like they are made from tired spices - everything at Deedee's was fresh and wonderfully spiced, with individual flavors popping through. The waitress came around with freshly made roti with which to scoop up the food. The stand-out dish was the peas. Yum! They were the best I've ever eaten IN MY LIFE - in a creamy sauce that made me wish I wasn't so full I had room for more. I usually hate Gulab Jamun, which is more often than not like heavy, soggy doughnut holes soaked in sugar water, but Deedee's were light and delicately spiced; not cloying in the least. Yum, yum, YUM! I'm an Indian food newbie, but so far Deedee's has provided me with the most complex flavor experiences I have ever had. I've only ever gotten take-out from Deedee's (1 curry + daal + rice = $3.99; 2 curries + daal + rice = $4.99) and have not always been 100% sure what type of curry I got each time, but I was very happy nonetheless. The take-out was served off of what was available from the lunch buffet, which changes every day, so I was at least able to see what my choices were and point. I'm not sure if I would pay to sit in on the buffet itself. There isn't a wide range of dishes, and I get a lot more than I can eat for $3.99 take-out anyway. Everyone at Deedee's is very kind, and very understanding of a hungry, confused, Vietnamese college student. Since I don't sit in on the buffet, I just ask what they recommend each time I come, to which they very graciously respond. This is probably one of the best Indian Vegetarian Buffets in the bay area. Food is generally very fresh. They serve fresh rotis (unlimited) as part of their buffets. They also have the option of rotis with or w/o ghee (clarified butter). We have been here numerous times in the last 6 months, and it has been a hit all times. Food does feel home-cooked. They used to serve one dish with tofu as a substitute for paneer and I wish they would do this more often. BTW, this is invariably my 9-year old daughter's favorite restaurant. We took her there on her Birthday as well. A good alternate might be Kokila's Kitchen in South San Jose. read more

I just reported them to Public Health safety dept. The food here can't be trusted, they gave us spoiled food and when we reported the issue instead of apologizing and refunding the money, they argued with us and tried to prove us wrong. The 2 punjabi ladies showed us a day old pulav saying this is still not spoiled, that shows they retain stale food. Such a shame for Indian food. Spoiled food and spoiling name of India. read more

They need to open their windows or install A/C because when it's hot, it's hot in there. I came out stinking of indian food. The food is okay, limited amount of items. Be warned, it's all vegetarian, no meat. Service was nice. I was kinda confused as to whether I was supposed to pick up my own utensils and water or if they were supposed to give it to me because they had everything laid out. I picked up utensils and a glass of water, then they placed a glass of water at my table. They gave me fresh hot bread on the spot. My rating is a 1 for this place. The customer service was just very bad & the food was terrible too. We entered the restaurant around 2:45pm for a lunch buffet and the lady was like we are closing soon so you can take your food and sit outside, that way we can just close the place and leave at 3pm. I thought that was so inconsiderate and insensitive. We haven't even started serving ourselves and the lady was more worried about closing the place at 3pm. Absolutely no care for the customer. They were just looking forward to closing the place and leaving. The dude who was giving out the fresh roti was also so rude. He was just tossing the roti to us like whatever. He even dropped one roti on the table by mistake but didn't even bother to pick it up or give us another fresh one. He just left. How rude was that. The ambiance is not good either. All in all it was a disaster. One nice Saturday afternoon family lunch was totally ruined. I'm leaving this review so no one has to face what we did ever again. This place was truly amazing! I loved the way the food smelled when we arrived for dinner and decided on the $10.99 buffet, which was Marathi-style (going to have to look that up). When my vegan friend and I asked which dishes were vegan: (1) they knew what "vegan" meant and, (2) they brought over special roti made without butter to our table to supplant the buttered version at the buffet. There were spiced rice dishes, vegetable curries, and lentils in a few variations--I couldn't believe it, but one of the dishes had sprouted lentils with spices--and it was fabulous. We were able to indulge in most of the items in the buffet as vegans and finished stuffed full. The service was excellent; the staff was extremely polite and friendly. The water cup was never empty and we were offered fresh, hot roti a couple of times from the waiter who walked around with a basket. Highly recommended. P.S. You can always order from the menu, even if everyone else is eating from the buffet. Also, it's cozy, not terribly crowded--give a non-franchise family business a break. Food was very well made and not overloaded with spices. Limited variety but great food. Really tastes like regional food. The best part for me, who has a big appetite, was that they have buffet! I specifically liked the puran poli, cauliflower rasa and srikandh. I have been to deedee's several times. They offer different varieties on each weekend and I think I have tried mostly all but my favorite is Maharashtrian (available on the 2nd weekend). Though some of the items are common all weekends, they offer specialities such as daal-baati for rajasthani, puranpoli for Maharashtrian. I did not really like their daal baati, but I really liked the puranpoli, so over last 2 years or so, I stick to it. The puranpoli is probably the best available outside home. My kids love it too. Though they offer several other items, I generally get the ones that I like, instead of trying everything. The tomato saar (soup) is very good too, and the undhiyo and shrikhand are also good. Besides these, I just pick 1 or 2 options and the rice. The place is small and gets packed up soon, so better to reach sooner to avoid waiting in line or waiting for the food. read more

Authentic Vegetarian food in a cramped setting We tried this place last week, after finding it on Yelp and getting excited about it after reading their reviwes and visiting their website. First of all, what is it about the Old cranky guy sitting by the entrance? Looked like the Master Owner as he was barking some orders at waiters, who by the way looked like his family members. It seems family run. Very cramped sitting to almost not comfortable sitting. They have a small buffet of all vegetarian food. The food tastes like home cooked meal. The day we tried this place they had PanI Puri which we love. It was very good. Tomato soup was good. The best item was the SHREEKHAND. The dessert. AWESOME. Just for that I am giving it 3 stars. Had there been negative ratings, I would have given one! We had been there for lunch and inspite of making us wait for a long time( ones that came after us were seated before us!) we were just sitting there waiting for more than 15 minutes for someone to bring in roti. Every other table were attended except ours!My 2 year daughter was hungry and prefers roti when we are dining out, but they don't care. Finally after confronting the person who was near the counter he tells they are running out of staff. REALLY? He wasn't even apologetic for their horrible service. Food was horrible too.
