DeeDee's gets top marks for serving standout food in modest surroundings. I'm still enjoying weekend lunch buffet I had a few hours ago. The dishes were completely different from the standard Indian-buffet offerings like chicken tikka and palak paneer. I can't even name the dishes we had at DeeDee's because I've never had this stuff before: fried potato dumplings; fried lentil hush puppies; curries made with eggplant, potato, chickpeas, and cauliflower; some kind of amazing sauce flavored with saffron and about 25 other spices...the list goes on. This weekend they were serving crispy little hollow puffed things that you fill with beans, corn, and some delightful green sauce and pop into your mouth. There was another dish comprised of the same little puffs (maybe the broken ones?) combined with vegetables, yogurt, and spices. There were two amazing desserts: a farina-type thing with raisins, corn, sweet syrup, and coconut; and a tangy saffron-mango-yogurt pudding flecked with spices and nuts. All in all, it was a big International party in my mouth. I couldn't sing along, but my taste buds could dance to the beat. We were the only non-Indians there, which I took to be a good sign. The food is vegetarian but I never missed the meat. The place was packed and my husband and I waited for about half an hour to get in. Some reviewers complain that the food wasn't fresh, but the turnover was so fast that new things were being brought to the buffet every few minutes. Although it's a buffet, there are still servers who walk through to give you fresh bread, fill your water glass, and pick up dirty plates. The hygiene is very questionable. I found a really dirty hair in the undheo here when I was here for lunch today. The manager just took my plate from me and asked me to use a new plate. That's it. The food was alright - nothing spectacular. They had Gujarati food this weekend. The chaat was alright, the other sabjis were just about ok. I seriously have experienced better! There are a lot of folks who love this place, but that love comes from someone who is yearning for homestyle/home made food. I am writing this review as some one who cooks and gets plenty of great food made at home and came here with an expectation that it would blow me away with food similar to Surati Farsan Mart in Artesia, CA. Unfortunately, that was not the case. They are serving sub par food with the excuse that it's homestyle/home made/home cooking and since you don't cook restaurant grade food at home you shouldn't expect the same from this establishment as well. When we went there, except for the rotis nothing was fresh and the damage was $25 for 2 people. There are Food Trucks that serve 3 times better food for half that price. Come on DeeDees, homestyle/home made/home cooked means fresh ingredients and carefully crafted food for people you love like mum used to make it. Food taste is really 5/5. The reason I am giving just 2 stars, is because of cleanliness. The restaurant does not require every customer to use new plates for the buffet. I could see many people taking a same soiled plate for many rounds; this is not hygienic. I have read somewhere that in the US, FDA mandates everyone to use new plates for every buffet rounds. But this restaurant does not follow this. I could see, even the owner flaunting many such rules. In case if Food Inspector visits here, I am sure they will be shocked. Chaat is better at other places (like Chaat Paradise), and the sauces were bland. The curries tasted not bad, but not spectacular either... just not worth the price. Friend told me that one of them was burnt and had that bad flavor, so I avoided it altogether. On the plus side, the warm roti is brought right to the table. Where's the stuff that's on the pictures on the wall?" Turns out that was a separate menu which you have to order and they don't list the prices either. There were probably about 8 vegetarian dishes you can pick from and there was also some salad and yogurt. So we grab a little bit of everything and ugh, it was gross. The menu online had us fooled. Maybe the other stuff that's not in the buffet would have tasted better, but guess I'll never know. We each probably ate like 2 bucks worth and didn't go back for seconds. We were out of there in like 10 minutes. I felt bad b/c the owner was like, "You didn't like the food?" And I said, "Oh yeah, everything was good, I liked the bread." I think those store hours are wrong.... Me and my friend Steve came to this place at around 330ish or 4 because we were craving some Indian food and it was one of the closest one's near our house. When we walked in to the place man it was so small seems like 35 people MAX and the Buffet did not have that many choices probably two hand full of items if I'm not mistaken. on top of that its Vegetarian... I'm a meat eater i gotta eat have least fish on my plate or something get that protein in, not just green stuff with flavor... Great Gujrati cuisine! Buffet style setup with great value. Tastes like a homemade meal...not very restaurant like, which I love. Deedee's has a them for every weekend: A different type of Gujrati cuisine. It seems like a hole in the wall, which it is, but cleaner and well kept than most other hole in the walls. The staff is very friendly and efficient never overbearing. They will come by, pick up your empty dishes, ask you if you want fresh Roti and answer all your questions...which you will probably have, since the dishes are not labeled. In my opinion, this is one of the better Indian restaurants in the valley. Yes, it's veg-only -- get over it. (The yogurt, paneer (cheese) and milk selections, along with the lentils will give you plenty of protein!) Deedee's or Double D's as I'd like to call it (;-)), used to be located in Mtn. View some years ago. I do like the food and the fact that most items are vegan. The weekend specials are nice. The flavors are somewhat different from the other Indian restaurants in the south bay. One problem that I do have is the lack of proper ventilation in the restaurant. The smell of the spices stick to your clothing. What I usually do is leave my jacket inside my car so that it's just my clothing that needs to be laundered after a visit to this restaurant. read more

Ok, you can see from my review count that I'm not a frequent writer of reviews. I am, however, a frequent consumer of the reviews. It says something about Deedee's, then, that I feel the need to sit down and write a glowing review 10 mins after getting home! Having read the reviews prior, I didn't have high expectations, but it is in my neighborhood, so I had to checkitout. Rajasthani night - I liked it....a lot. Not because it was highly complex, not because it was a beautiful restaurant; it's neither. I liked it because the food itself was healthy, the dishes were varied, and the food showed a lot of care. It was light and flavorful. Having grown up in the valley, I'm an Indian food veteran. The vast majority of Indian food in the valley is oily. Deedee's didn't attempt to substitute oil for fresh ingredients and flavor. Others are talking about how the food here is "homestyle"...I heartily agree, the food seems like something your Indian exchange mother (were you to be an exchange student in India) would cook for you. I read a few of the other reviews. I, myself, took my used plate back to the buffet....YIKES, I guess that *is* an unsanitary no-no. I was just trying to be eco. They didn't offer to take my used plate away from me as I hit the buffet, if they should have. The pani-puri were a tiny bit bland...but they were tasty enough that I did have two servings of three each!! (yes...I am a glutton). And the air was not stuffy or overly spiced...the a/c was cranked and it was quite comfy and airy in the room. I also noticed none of the cleanliness issues. Everything (aside from me I guess!) seemed perfectly sanitary. Finally, the dessert was so tasty that I had to look it up....Churma Laddu. AMAZING. My latest find and I am so proud of introducing this place to some of my friends. They have excellent Indian cuisine - Rajasthani, Gujarati, Maharashtrian and Kathiawadi. All of them are home style cooking and hence not the typical creamy gravies you find in other Indian restaurants. Each item in the menu is true to its origin and tastes so yummy. We were there on a Saturday and the place was really busy, about a 20 minute wait, not too bad. The food in my opinion was average, nothing to write home about. I'm not sure what the cuisine was (The cuisine varies depending on the weekend). The matter paneer (Indian cottage cheese cooked in a creamy gravy with peas) was quite good and so was the shrikhand (dessert made from milk cream). The pani puri, on the other hand, was really quite bad. The rest of the food- dal (lentils), chole (chickpeas) and curries was just OK. They have managed to cram in as many tables as possible in a very tiny space and I can see how cleanliness could be an issue. There is no place to move, forget cleaning under the table then. I too have to agree with Akshay. We came here at around 8 pm and nothing really was fresh. Food was seating in their buffet stand for a couple of hours - dried rice and dehydrated food!
