We came here for the crawfish and I must say my expectations from other reviews had me hyped and I may have come on a off day but these were just okay crawfish. We were seated quickly, the waitress was nice however the place was LOUD and I get not wanting plates to collect on tables however the guy was trying to pick up plates that I wasn't done with which became frustrating. We ordered two pounds of crawfish - mild and spicy - $13.99 a pound - and then each side (potatoes, corn, sausage) is $1.50 each. So the mild crawfish doesn't have much flavor and the spicy is just spice on the palette. There were one or two good size ones in the bag however over all these crawfish were small and when you are paying by the pound and the tails are small it doesn't leave a whole lot to be desired. The onion rings lacked flavor - meaning they need to season their batter, sprinkle some salt when they come out the grease, something to make it more than an onion dipped in batter and fried. I also didn't understand why all the other tables were given a bucket to toss their shells in and we were given a plate but at that point I was just digging in. Highly recommended!!! Not really sure what I expected when many friends recommended this place. NOT your average oyster bar that's for sure! This is an oyster bar with Asian Flare! Deckhand has two locations in Austin to serve the hungry masses. We visited the North Austin location, located on the edge of Round Rock. My sister friend from Cali was in town for a few days and wanted to see the Capital (of course) and get some great Austin Food! When you walk in it looks just like an East Coast "Locals" seafood spot, very unassuming, but wait! the FIRST thing to notice is the MASS of oyster shells in the flower beds around the parking lot. Super unique and SO COOL! okay - SO!!! back to inside... Think - Sconce lighting, party streamers, fish murals, bench seating; it's TOTALLY small town bar setting! there is PLENTY of seating tho! Like, ALL OVER!!! Outside seating too for those sunny Austin days! So when you come in you are immediately greeted by the hostess, and are seated right away; not sure if this is a NORM? but this was OUR experience this day; even though the place was HOPPIN busy! Our server was a TRUE saleswoman - and a FAST talker! We had to keep on top of her while ordering as she kept trying to talk us into ordering EVERYTHING! lol She was cute though, and Super Nice! She took great care of us! As busy as they were they pushed food out Super Quick! which for Austin in our experience is pretty typical; and which we LOVE. We started out with 1/2 dozen raw oysters (our server told us we HAD to have a full dozen haha!), which were served with a version of Thai hot sauce that I make a home but they do it a little differently and serve it in a squeeze bottle! It's sugar, cilantro, fresh hot chilis, fish sauce, lime or lemon and garlic. Super yummy and they BLEND it! Their version is sweeter than mine but MAN it took the oysters - added to the squeeze of lemon, fresh horseradish and cocktail sauce to ANOTHER LEVEL. SOOOOOOOO Freaking Good!!!! The oysters were larger than I usually get but these were SO SWEET AND FRESH AND JUICY!!! Then we had fried Salt and Pepper Calamari and Prawns. So as I said this place is Asian inspired, so they don't use heavy wheat flour in their batter, there is rice flour and cornstarch in here baby! Light, not At All greasy, and FULL OF FLAVOR!!! they also follow up the fry with stir fried onions, and jalapenos quick stirred in, and then top with cilantro, so be prepared for FULL FLAVOR here folks!! For our meal we opted for the whole fried flounder and guys....GUYS!!!! LOOK AT MY PIC. This was the MEDIUM one, and it was MASSIVE!!! fried perfectly - i didn't even need to ask them to fry it hard to make sure it was COOKED. This daddy tasted of a light pre marinade - not just a flat fried fish. It's also served with a chili pepper sauce that gives the fish an intense flavored, slightly kicked-up chili sauce for your dipping pleasure. Man this fish is EXCELLENT!!! Crispy outside, tender inside and I LOVE this fish in all of it's MEATY YUM!!! I could eat this EVERY DAYYYYYYYYY The daughter got chicken wings as she wasn't feeling too adventurous and wasn't trying to feed her fried rice habit today. They came out and I was like OH MAN!!! But she wasn't so impressed. I had to (very quickly) remove the mass of jalapenos and onions piled on top - GREAT in my eyes, but not so great to my girl and her limited taste sensations - WHOSE CHILD IS THIS??? . After removing the offending additions though she tore into them and they LOOKED GOOOOOOD. LIke the fried fish they were cooked perfectly, crispy/tender/juicy/flavorful action ACHIEVED!!! Next up and eaten WITH the flounder was our Som Tom (aka Papaya Salad). Deckhand makes theirs Lao style; complete with salty fermented tiny raw crabs included! We got ours Medium Heat (for my sister/friend) and the flavor was FANTASMIC... Salty, citrusy, fresh Crispy veg with FULL FLAVOR OVERLOAD. They even remember to include Long beans in the salad for another added crunch and Fam - with the sticky rice and a hunk of hot fried fish???? HEAVEN. The deckhand was busting busy the entire time we were there, but they had everything running super effective, I saw NOONE with the Hangry waiting too long for food face - EVERYONE was enjoying their food and with not a dissatisfied face in the house. I've been here quite a few times, and everything has always been so good! I always get Moo Ping as an appetizer. It's on the regular menu, not the appetizer menu, but it's perfect for an app...skewers of marinated pork served with cucumber, tomato, sauce, and lettuce to make it into a wrap. SO good. My dad loves the oysters, and they are big! I don't eat oysters, but I love the garlic shrimp, gumbo, salmon, fried shrimp, and really everything I've tried. I recently tried the steamed fish, which was 2 flounder filets in a fish broth with veggies. It was kind of a soup, and it was light, healthy, and flavorful. ***Ask for a bottle of deckhand sauce. I don't know why they don't just have it on every table, but you have to ask for it and they will bring you a bottle. It's like a spicy chili fish sauce, and it is one of my favorite things EVER. Great ambiance ! Love the patio now that the warmer days are here ! We went in for their crawfish and it was so good , they have a special Deckhand house sauce that kind of reminds me of fish sauce but its a lot spicier, really good though! We also had their shrimp cocktail and it is spicy ! Had to try their Gumbo and omg it was delicious ! My baby kept asking for more ! It was not spicy at all but full of flavor ! Star of the day were definitely the oysters ... we had their sampler so we had a few of their specialty oysters and my favorite was the Tokyo oysters, they come with spicy mayo I think but theyre not spicy at all on the contrary they're super flavorful ! Papaya Salad, Tiger Cry Beef, Drunken Sailor (a mix of seafood in a Thai basil sauce), and whole fish. The whole fish market price right now is $35 for medium flounder. They also have pompano. I also realized that I prefer the fish sauce (aka deckhand house sauce) more than the Thai basil sauce itself since it was unexpectedly not sweet and more dark soy sauce flavor. Ask for the Deckhand sauce!!! It's absolutely delicious.... and incredibly spicy hot!! The place was really busy and we were told the wait was between 15-20 minutes. We got seated within 5 minutes. I ordered the Deckhand combo. The menu indicated 3 fried shrimp and one catfish filet with fries and hush puppies. Upon arrival, my order had 3 huge catfish filets along with everything else. They are certainly generous with the catfish and the fries. As a side note, try mixing the Deckhand sauce with the tartar, cocktail, and ketchup sauces!!! Deckhands will (hopefully) forever be one of my top 5 favorite spots to eat at in all of the Austin area. I am a sucker for good seafood, and they nail it nearly every time. Since crawfish season is over, I went back to my other OG order which is the snow crab legs. The sauce is *chef's kiss*. The peel-and-eat shrimp specials are HUGE! But, is a hit-and-miss. Sometimes they are perfect, sometimes like this last time they are overcooked and I could not get the shell to come off for the life of me. You have to pair it with their Michelada, it's one of my favorites in town as well. My partner always gets their chicken wings. We have tried nearly all of their flavors, they are all so tasty. But the lemon pepper takes the cake! The use of actual lemon zest you can see on the wings really makes them that much better. read more

Love love love Deckhand! Finally made it to the north location on Thanksgiving eve and it was just as impressive as the south location I used to frequent when I lived down there... Grabbed some seats at the bar luckily cuz the seats were full and people were ready to drink into the holiday weekend! Lahn and Matt were attentive and took very good care of their bar and patrons! We started with the salt and pepper calamari and it was light and crispy... we shared the shrimp fried rice and Matt made sure it was spicy for us!! We added the house sauce and I want this sauce on everything forever! Drinks were cold, service was awesome and the food was stellar!! I rarely ever give one star reviews but I am so disappointed in this place. The restaurant itself is insanely loud and a little all over the place which is something I can totally look past if the food is good. However, we specifically went in to get raw oysters and had to spit them out after realizing they were gritty and weirdly fishy. They weren't as cold as they should be and now we are dealing with a stomach bug with non stop throwing up. I wish I knew that this place doesn't have a good health rating prior to eating raw food here. My sister got the papaya salad and it was absolutely inedible. We are very adventurous with food and oysters is one of our favorites so it is not about the flavor or expected fishiness. On top of all this, the food is priced ridiculously for what you get. Took my entire family here to celebrate my 44th time around the Sun. We ordered plenty and each one of them were fabulous, as always. The crispy salt and pepper calamari & shrimp, bowl of Tom yum soup, and fresh oysters were the reasons why I chose this place. New to us this time was the Mussels Vin Blanc, and the fried oyster plate. Added these to our favorite list. What else was new, was when asking for their chili sauce/ The Deckhands sauce, they came out with a new sealed bottle and call it Tarzan sauce. Spicy, fishy, salty, perfectly fine with everything. Can't wait make a steak dish with it at home. It was also shared that Tarzan usually can be found at their South location, and comes in at the North Location, on Saturdays. Me and my family love this place, as the setting is pretty upbeat but chill. I keep wondering forgetting what that ding sound was, it might be tipping the bartenders or maybe even something more special. Your items will be ready for you to come get it. I decided to try something different today. The salt and pepper combo with calamari and shrimp and Drunken Sailor. The salt and pepper combo was crunchy and good. The Drunken Sailor has crawfish tails, fried catfish, scallops, mussels, calamari, shrimp and fish boil in a spicy sauce with Thai basil leaves. The dish definitely had an assortment of seafood. I should have asked if they could make it spicier. Still good flavor. If you haven't tried Deckhand, come try it? I'm embarrassed to say I haven't been to the new place since they moved, about 2 years ago. We went this evening for Father's Day and it was pretty crowded. They told us 45 minute wait but were seated in about 15. The waitstaff was very friendly. She took our drink order and then food. We were really surprised how fast the food came out, considering how busy it was. The food, I had blackened Flounder, was very good. The portions were good, and all & all the prices were still pretty good. The interior was a lot better and more thought out than their original location a few blocks away. This place is a not so hidden gem. Prepare for it to be busy no matter the time you show up. That's a good thing... co-owners and brothers Lahn and Tarzan know how to treat their customers. Their new location across the street which is much larger will be a welcomed addition once it's opened! The Food! - Think seafood fused with flavors from Southeast Asia. Highly recommend their crawfish during the season, and the Drunk Sailor is my favorite menu item. They go through over 6,000 gulf oysters in a week caught from their own boat. Personally, I'm an east coast oyster fan, so it's just not my cup of tea. But, people order these in tower forms here. Golf fan? They will ALWAYS have golf on the TV at the bar. It's the only channel I've seen in years here, it's great! A goal in my life is now to figure out the seasoned semi-chunky fish sauce recipe in their squirt bottles.
