I'm a regular at this night and they always play amazing music. You can float to The Cure one moment and then stomp to Nitzer Ebb another. To clear up some things from some previous negative reviews, people here are not snobby, depressed, or any other variation of that. I have always felt at home here from my first day. Most of us are here for the music first and foremost. Social connections in a space like this come after repeated visits and seeing familiar faces, maybe getting excited over the same song and connecting over it. This is not a typical party party club to flirt or chat with someone you just met. There is a wide range of people here, from younger people to scene elders. Some people are dressed super elaborately, others are in a simple t shirt and pants. If you love goth and industrial music, you will love this place and feel like you belong here. However, if you have come primarily to observe the scene as a novelty rather than engage with the music, you may have a very different experience. read more

I had a great time at Death Guild! Went for Halloween and it was quite a lively turn-out. There was a nice mix of music--from industrial to 80's--and the crowd was appropriately diverse; all ages were represented. If you're a goth who regularly bemoans the lack of the right "scene," you will feel right at home here. If you're not a goth, but nonetheless enjoy dabbling in the subculture, you will still enjoy yourself. The host club, DNA lounge, is spacious--two story, with multiple bars, and it is adjoined by a pizza place that exudes a truly mouthwatering aroma. The cover charge is only $5--a seemingly excellent deal that is soon negated by the egregiously high drink prices. The cheapest well drink is $9. Anything more complicated is $16. I'm not sure if this should be a review of Death Guild or DNA Lounge. I'm picking DG since I was there on a Friday night "Meat vs Death Guild" event. I've been to DNA Lounge for Death Guild nights as well as a few live concerts. I love the environment, the people, the bartenders, the bouncers, and the music. Yeah, it's pretty typical goth/industrial/EBM you'd expect, but most of it is music I really enjoy hearing and dancing to. It gives me an opportunity to pull out the bondage pants, fishnets, and whatever else I love to wear but can't during the work week. The live concerts are good and I've seen both VNV and A23 here. I've been to better sounding venues but this is still decent enough that the experience is worth going if your favourite band is here. The prices on the drinks can be a bit up there, but if you pick up drinks that they have on special, it's not bad at all. I did find the coat check cost to be a bit high, but when you don't have many options for a jacket, it's worth doing instead of freezing without one. Two thumbs up to DNA Lounge and Death Guild. There are a mix of people most nights and there can be ass holes that wonder in. This is my favorite club night in all of San Francisco!! You never have to worry about super-drunk brotards wearing misogynistic neon t-shirts yacking all over your shoes or hitting on you loooooooong after you've said, "No, thanks!" You never have to worry about hearing Justin Bieber or Katie Perry or Ke$ha blasted over the speakers, and everyone puts actual effort into their appearance...some baby bats flutter around wearing the most exquisitely interesting and creative costumes one could imagine anyone thinking up for a Monday night! First, let's get one thing straight: This is a GOTH club. That means people will be wearing black clothing, have evil-looking dramatic make-up on, possibly be wearing fetish attire, and dance alone in a melodramatic way that expresses their inner existential angst. The music will be some mish-mash of goth, industrial, dark wave, etc. Strangers may glower at you, girls may walk by wearing little more than a pair of patent pleather hot pants and thigh-high 7" platform fetish boots...in fact, some guys might walk by wearing that very same outfit. There may be elder goths (eek, you mean people in their 60's still have lives and do cool things?? Perish the thought!!!) and gender queer folks and (heaven forfend!) people there who are sober and just came to dance!!! I know, right? What is the world coming to?!!! If this doesn't sound like your fine-china cup of belladonna-spiked tea, perhaps you'd be more happy heading to DNA Lounge on a Saturday night for Bootie. But if it DOES sound like something that would make your ebony-clad loins quiver, Death Guild is definitely The Best Goth Club in San Francisco, and certainly the best thing happening in the Bay Area on a Monday night! So, haven't been yet? Not sure how to dip your sun-allergic toes into the misery-infused dank delicious abyss that is Death Guild? It's very simple: at the very least, wear black. Seriously. Sometimes, you need a little variety in your music and dance. Well, I just did that. To be honest with you, I had fun. I dance a little and talk with some very interesting "looking" people. Some are a bit scary and some are a bit normal. Whether it was headbanging to goth music or industrial, the music was thoroughly entertaining. Who needs drugs when you got goth music? First of all, I don't get the negative reviews about this club. There were no hostile or pretentious people here the night we came. Anyways, I met my new friend Ariella and one guy from my meet up group, Bruno there. I gave the organizer of the group Ariella a ride to the club. Surprisingly, parking on the street was easy to find. Perhaps it was because we went on a Monday night? There is valet parking for $10.00 by the club. Anyways, the cover charge is $5.00. I think it's $3.00 if you get there before 10p.m. This is an 18 and over club. The guy at the door was very cool since my friend left her ID at home and then he told her that she looks like she's over 18 so he let her in. Wow, a cool doorman with no attitude is not something you see that often! We met Bruno inside and he had on this homemade PVC type dress on. He was pretty cool and easy to talk to. Ariella tried to get me to dance but I said that in order to do that, she'd have to drag me to the floor kicking and screaming. That was a poor choice of words since that's just what she tried to do then. I resisted though, ha! The inside of the club has a large dance floor and a stage for the people who really want to stand out. There are some pretty good dancers there. There are two bars downstairs and the restroom. There are plenty of places to sit along the side. Upstairs there is a snack bar that serves tacos, burritos, sausages, chips, nachos, and stuff like that. Ironically, the food is a lot more reasonably priced than the drinks. I paid $3.00 for a bottle of water. On the other hand, a sausage only costs $4.00. There is another bar there too and a more private area for eating away from the dance floor. The dance floor upstairs is smaller but there is plenty of places along the side upstairs to sit and observe the people below. Most of the people there are really into dressing up. I felt under dressed in just black pants, a black tank top, and a sheer black see through knit shirt and leather jacket and combat boots. To my surprise, one nice older goth woman said that my shirt was cool and so did Ariella-:) A lot of the people there were wearing PVC, latex, short dresses and skirts (including the guys), and were a mix of rave/goth/industrial types. A couple of young girls wore duct tape on their nipples and got in, so anything goes here! If you want to fit in more, wear mostly all black. Of course, some people dressed in regular clothing as well so it's not necessary to dress up. We noticed that someone was smoking pot upstairs so went outside to get some air as it was making my friend sick. Some guy blew smoke in her direction, but not on purpose. I used to very much like Death Guild when it was at the Glas Kat. I got introduced to it through a friend of mine a couple of years ago and have met a handful of very interesting people there. I liked the size of the Glas Kat, the amount of space there was to chill, always movies on the TV's, and the smoking room where you could be entertained by even overhearing a ridiculous line of conversation a few feet from you (kinda comes naturally when you mostly go to clubs/bars by yourself, like me). There was always potential for a good time back then, despite the fact that the bar kinda sucked and had maybe two kinds of beer on tap in the whole place (I would usually pre-game en route to the club). DNA Lounge for the most part just sucks, to put it simply. A well vodka (it could be Taaka or Popov for fuck's sake!) should NOT cost 7 dollars. Drink prices at Death Guild were already somewhat expensive at the Glas Kat considering the amount of liquid you get in most of the mix drinks is only a little bit larger in volume than those plastic containers they give you when you are required to take a piss test can hold. DNA has also decided to be funny and take after correctional facilities by not installing toilet seats in their bathrooms. I will commend the place for keeping the cover 5 bucks, and the event an 18+ affair, but I won't be back again. At least the Glas Kat still has BAGG. read more

This review is specifically for the first aid response from DNA Lounge at Death Guild. I was happily dancing away on the stage when my right knee dislocated. It's certainly not the first time this has happened but within 5 minutes of my falling down, I was helped from the stage and sitting with a medic having my knee examined and wrapped in an ace bandage. Someone came shortly with ice. Circumstances could have been more dramatic had I not known my own body and what was going on but the fact that I was responded to so quickly is worth noting. I won't ever go back. I went once when VNV was spinning. It was an alright atmosphere, but there were too many things going on for me to be so sober. I went with a few friends, and had a drink, because it was a $8 well. I'm sorry, but no well drink should ever be $8, thats just ridiculous. On top of that, went upstairs and what I saw next tripped me out. Three men were handcuffed to the railing with their pants around their ankles while three women were flogging them. Isn't this something you should be saving for the power exchange? Seems a bit out of place for a dance club. At this point, I excused myself from my friends to go to the bathroom, which was super clean I must say. As I'm using the urinal, two women enter the bathroom, one goes into the stall, the other stands next to me, drops her panties and raised her skirt and begins to pee. On any other occasion, I wouldn't think of looking, but I had too. It wasn't a man, it was just a super skilled woman, who then winked at me. I laughed and washed up and headed back upstairs. I wish I had consulted Yelp before going to this event--every single one of the negative reviews are about how disrespectful the bouncers/staff are. I had only been in for about 30 minutes before I was rudely dragged out after having done nothing wrong. I'm underage (20) and I respect the rules so of course I didn't try to drink anything alcoholic. Later, however, I went up to the bartender and asked for some water. After my first sip a very hostile security guy comes up to me, grabs me, and demands to see my ID. I show him my ID and calmly explain that I'm just drinking water, which the bartender even confirmed. The security guy refuses to listen to anything I'm saying (even though I'm being cooperative and completely sober), he won't even smell the cup, and then he drags me roughly out of the club. I ask him if I could just talk to him for a second and he insists that we'll talk outside. As soon as we get outside he immediately throws my cup of water out and slams the door on me. The bouncers are extremely disrespectful. He KNEW it was a cup of water but he simply didn't care. I was a law-abiding, paying customer and they treated me like a criminal. I should have at least gotten a refund for the way I was treated. Nobody warned me that I might get thrown out for holding a cup of water. DO NOT GO TO THIS CLUB--the bouncers are hostile, rude, and just plain mean. read more

I used to DJ in London, so I always love giving props when they're due. She snubbed me, rolling her eyes-- as if she were too cool to acknowledge me and my un-gothness. I have to be honest, I like this kind of music, but I don't LOVE it like a couple of friends or my brothers do. I know enough about goth/industrial to dance appropriately to it and not look totally confused when band names are thrown around, but don't ask me names of songs or anything. This is my favorite place to go to, ever. I used to live in Los Angeles where being goth for the moment is like, sooo super cool omg. I got tired of girls dressing in black and wearing too much eyeliner and being annoying in goth clubs. -Anyhow- I love this place. It's big, has food that is actually quite yummy, has two dance floors with a good variation of music between them. It's true, there are no toilet seats. It's weird. But hey, whatever. There is also a bathroom upstairs if the lower level bathroom is full, which is nice. There is coat check which is quite nice for the cold San Francisco nights. The people at the front door are humorous and I like them very much. I have had absolutely no problems with the staff, ever. There are several places to sit, so if you don't feel like dancing all night long and just want to listen to music and talk with friends you can do so. There is a stage to dance on and two boxes. It's really quite nice. It picks up a lot at about midnight, just so people know. The cover is only $5. Can't beat that. As for the people who attend: we are GOTHS. Get it? GOTHS. NO we're not going to smile and wave and hump your leg when you walk in. If you're coming in just to gawk at us and how "weird" we are, we know. Call it rude, but I don't go to your booty club and make fun of your atrocious Ed Hardy Retardy clothes. You'd be rude too if I did that. YES, there are some pretentious people who attend. I've been going to Death Guild for about 7 years now. No matter what venue it is at, I still feel comfortable hanging out, enjoying what's popular in gothic fashion these days parading by me, and watching the people dance in any way they feel like it. With DNA's addition of the cafe upstairs and the luxury bar downstairs (Mojitos, Caipirinhas, Absinthe, and my fav is to ask the bartender - the wonderfully talented Jared - to just make me something) i feel it is just an added bonus to an already good time. A club shouldn't necessarily be ALL about the venue it is at; Death Guild has been going strong for 16 years (at many different venues) and it is run by some pretty awesome people who want you to have a good time, relax, and enjoy yourself. read more

Death Guild is directly in the middle of the bad/good spectrum. Your night can seriously go either way. That goes for almost every aspect except the drinks, which for me have always done their job very well. The music can be hit or miss, and even though they have a request list, it seems they very rarely play anything on it. The regular crowd seems to have the opinion that being rude is a requirement, and striking up conversations with the majority of people just isn't going to happen. However, it IS monday night, so enough random people wander in that you can often find someone to chat with. Besides, what else are you going to do on mondays? Personally speaking, I've seen people i use to work with here or even people i went to high school with. So if you go enough times, you're bound to run into someone! Monday Night's at Glas Kat is Death Guild. A great goth/industrial venue for those who aren't pretentious bastards. The music is always good with a slew of celebrity dj's that roll through on occasion, including Ronin from VNV Nation. Upstairs you have a more lounge vibe with booths that overlooks the main dance floor. There is a dance floor upstairs with its own bar and a seperate dj. Downstairs there are two bars, with one facing the main dance floor. This club hosts its own smoking room for those who don't wanna stand outside in the freezing cold to light up. Everyone at this club has a great vibe. no one's there to point fingers, everyone is just having a real chill time. I go every Monday and I just love it. Like my second home. read more

This place is probably my favorite club of all time. The greatest thing about death guild is how friendly it is. In the average club most people are grinding the whole time. And although that has it's moments, I'd rather be free to dance without being harassed. Death Guild is the place to do that. Everyone here dances for the joy of dancing. As a whole it's the most non-threatening club I have ever been to and I know I'll always have a good time. Some days you just need to go Goth. It was probably the Blade Trilogy we were watching that really did it. Everyone was wearing leather, studs, and lots of black in the scenes. Tom said, "Hey let's go to a club." I replied, "Okay but we're going Goth." The boys looked at me as if I was a bit rattled. I probably was. "Seriously, chicks with extra eye liner and lots of fishnets to go with black boots?" I guess the mental pictures they painted for themselves did it. "Dude, what do I wear?" Oddly enough after 20 minutes in my closet and a trip to Marco's house we all ended up dressed to go. Little did we know Marco was packing a fishnet shirt in his wardrobe? Tom went all out with the eyeliner. So here we are at Death Guild on Monday night. Top marks for staying true to a theme. I'm not a big fan overall of this location (it was better a few years back) but it is decent enough. Great dance floors and the music was a throwback for me. Kinda like when you go to 80's night. Oddly enough we weren't the oldest group in the house but fairly close. Straight to the bar we went for some nice stiff drinks. We saluted the bar tender for his generous splash of Jack and quickly ordered a second round with a hefty tip. Unfortunately as outsiders and being a bit older than the mostly young nubile crew of guys and gals it was a rather uneventful and boring night for us. We opted to leave after a little bit and avoid any cliché hitting on younger girls that obviously aren't our type. But the Guild scene is still good enough to rate a solid 3 stars on my Yelp-o-meter for being a good Goth night out with Mr. Al Cohol. Death Guild is the Monday night goth club at DNA Lounge. I'm SO glad I finally got to attend... I've been wanting to go ever since I fought at DG's Thunderdome at Burning Man 2011. Death Guild is held in a great club with lots of space, the crowd seemed cool, and the DJs were playing great music (all the standard goth/industrial club stuff on the main dance floor, then I found out the tiny lounge dance floor upstairs was playing old school stuff like Metallica. Whaaaat! Haha, love it.) Lighting and sound systems were both excellent. Plus there was a cool jewelry/accessories vendor right by the door with all manner of gothic shinies for us magpies to gawk at. The $5 cover charge seemed quite reasonable for such a great venue. I will definitely be back. Granted it will have to be the next time the planets align to allow a Monday night in SF when I don't have to be up the next morning, but it'll happen again one day! read more

The good: - usually plenty of space, good ventilation, the DNA dance floor is not bad (the floor is stickier than glas kat, but there are plenty worse) - if you're a girl, you can go by yourself and get bothered as much as you would at a cafe. - two dance floors so you can alternate. - usually a couple of good dancers. - intoner often spins interesting music the first monday of the month (can be a bit repetitive when he goes into hands/ant-zen land, but you don't hear much panacea or scorn in clubs so is a nice change of texture/sound) - what other club is open on monday? With that said, if you care about dancing, then you're just going to have to suck up and deal with the fact that goth/industrial as a genre is more-or-less dead and DG doesn't push any envelopes. You're going to get what you get: some depeche, some skinny puppy (probably: testure, assimilate, or worlock), NIN, and a whole bunch of techno that has been made "industrial" via modest distortion but w/o doing anything about the repetitive 4x4x4x4x4...x4x4 beat. Used to go all the time. Drinks are good n strong. The bar tenders seem fast and a bit over-worked. I will agree the bathrooms no matter if at DNA or Glass Kat are some of the grossest in the city. My gf told me in the woman's bathrooms the doors often have broken locks. The BEST part of the DG event is upstairs at Glass Kat, the industrial room. Now those guys know how to mix their music. Downstairs, in the Gothic area, I have to say I have not heard a DJ who can mix. I refuse to go to DNA for every damn Gothic/Industrial event in San Francisco. Its nothing more then a Box with loud music located in the worse part of San Francisco. The bartenders are kind, but once again, over-worked, as when at DNA it takes forever to get a drink. Maybe best you don't drink then you won't need to use the bathrooms. I give 1 star for cleanliness and 2 stars for having a place to find like minded others with same interests. added at time of edit: i would hope that the staff has a cleaner place to wash up before they go touching your drinks/food. Most of the people that attend look like they haven't changed or showered in over a week. Possibly that is why the bathrooms are in such bad shape as who is going to complain when it's the only place to get hot water and a private place to shoot up. read more

Death Guild is fantastic! You don't have to dress a certain way to attend - common misconception. The alcohol is decently priced and all the staff are incredibly friendly. The dancefloor is big, fun, and hilarious to watch from the top floor. Beware the inner circle goth drama with the regulars. read more

This is a great place to just blow off some steam and just be totally crazy and not even have to wait until the end of the week. DNA is an okay dance club--a bit too LA for me usually--but their Goth night on Mondays is great. (I went a bit Goth for a year in high school so I totally relate to the scene--though they pretty much peg me correctly as a faker here.) Regardless, they're okay with it--probably because I really rock my fishnets and dark eyeliner. I know, cliché, cliché--but it is so much fun. And Goth guys are fun too--they have the most off the wall pick-up lines. Half of them don't even make any sense. We came here twice this summer--once just a couple of weeks ago and both times we had a lot of fun. Danced to that industrial music that just goes on and on and got fairly drunk one night, which I regretted the next day when I dragged myself to work and tried to get through a day of pure hell. I guess I'm not 22 anymore. This is also a great place to catch a show and kind of an SF classic at this point. Completely worth the cover, the hangover, and the premature deafness. Just don't go for the battle of the bands--it just is too uneven. read more

So, it's been a few months after their 18th anniversary (I wrote about my experience with their 15th and onward last, time flies), and it's been at least 1-2 years since Death Guild has made the move to the DNA Lounge from the Glas Cat. The move has caused me to take off a star; the venue is nice for things like concerts, but it's a little hard to find people or talk comfortably, and I'm partial to the elegance of Glas Cat, versus the more grungy-warehouse feel of the DNA Lounge. I started going less-often after the move, but I think it's both a matter of personal taste, and me always being broke. Otherwise, I still enjoy the music, the two floors are still awesome, I like the drinks there (now that I'm 21), and the guy who does the coat check (I am TERRIBLE at names) is still just as awesome as he's always been. Sometimes the music is a little off, or constantly slow with no variation, but the anniversaries are still well worth dragging out the petticoat for. read more

This is the only spot in the city (anywhere, really) where I LOVE to dance. This place has two dance floors, but I only ever hang out on the main one downstairs. From what I hear, the drinks are expensive, but I'm not much of a drinker, so I don't mind this. I've brought friends here who had never been to anything like it, and they all loved it. There's something so glamorous (as Nadines D. put it) about Death Guild that seems to really put people in awe, yet still puts them at ease. The only gripe I have with Death Guild is that it's not on a Friday or Saturday. Or even a Wednesday or Thursday. Oh yeah, and the cover. This is by far the best goth/industrial dance night in San Francisco. read more

Death Guild has been my favorite SF club to go to since the mid 90's. I prefered the Trocadero/Glas Kat venue, but alas with any long running club sometimes locations need to change. The DJ's do really well keeping the floor busy with all of our favorite toons from yesteryear to present... which is unusal since most clubs seem to focus on the modern and snubbing the roots from where it all began.
