Dean's Homestyle is a busy, old school diner that feels like a step back in time. The food is solid with a huge menu nothing amazing, nothing bad, just dependable comfort food. Where it struggles is presentation and flow. The entry isn't very inviting, seating is tight, benches are worn, and the bathrooms and back areas could use a serious cleaning. There's no clear waiting area or place to pay, which makes checkout awkward especially since it's cash only, leaving you feeling like you're in the way just trying to settle the bill. Service was a longer wait, understandable with how packed it was, but a little polish would help. The staff works hard, but a cleaner, more uniform look and keeping the attitude in check would go a long way. Dean's has history and loyal regulars, but it could really benefit from a modern tune-up. For now, it lands right in the middle: 3.5 stars. read more

Ok, this restaurant is fine... just fine. I had the fish and chips, the fries were crispy, the fish was mostly crispy, and everything was well cooked. However, the food has little in the way of flavor, very little salt, rather plain, the tartar sauce was mostly mayo, and the ranch on the side salad was also barely ranch. I would say this, service was cheery and quick, the food was plentiful especially for the prices, and I was full when I left, unfortunately though not terribly satisfied. However, if you are looking for less salt, and no complex flavors, then this is a perfect joint and quite affordable. No debit or credit accepted here. read more

This is the breakfast place to be. They do offer lunch too but their breakfast menu is where it's at! We've visited here many times over many years. I keep coming back for the pancakes! They're so fluffy and good and cooked perfectly every time. The staff is always friendly and hard working. Things to take note of; They only accept cash but they do have an ATM available. It's not a huge restaurant, it's a "historic" house that is charmingly set up to dine in. You may have to wait a bit to be seated if it's a busy day/time. Theres limited parking but we've always been able to find a spot. Don't come in if you're in a big rush or have limited time. It's not fast food and we generally wait for our food longer here than most places. I note this because if you're aware of it you can sit back and be patient until your food arrives to enjoy. They offer a large menu with tons of options to choose from. There's sure to be something or everyone. Our latest visit we did try lunch options for the first time. We had sandwiches that were both very good. We tried the clam chowder too and enjoyed that to start with. Even though we did like our lunches we'll be back for breakfast again soon. What a fall from grace. This was the best place around, excellent food, fast, at amazing prices. 1 star would be the worst possible review, meaning it's the same you'd give dining in a sewer. Obviously, this is not that, so 1 star isn't an honest review. Neither, however, is 5 (no room whatsoever for improvement). This cash-only joint would generally have lines out the door and no parking on weekends, such was the popularity. I came in today, Sunday, for breakfast at 11 am, and fully expected to head to Elmer's, my usual plan when the line is long here. Tons of parking. No groups of people waiting outside. Seated immediate. On a Sunday. At 11 am! Really bad sign. Sure enough, the ownership changed, and with it, everything else did, too. The food was nearly inedible, pancakes undercooked, bacon burned. The eggs were passable. It's really sad but I'll never go here again. I used to look forward to it. Dean probably should've taken his name with the sale of the place, but I guess that's what they paid for. Just avoid and go to Elmers and get the German pancake. read more

We wanted to try this cute place, but the Cash only sign turned us away. In this day and age, a restaurant that doesn't take card OR Mobile payments makes ZERO sense. Why should I use the ATM and pay a fee to pull out money (That Deans gets a cut of)? Not everyone has a hundred dollars just sitting around free to use, some have to use a card as they dont have it this time. We moved on to a place that let us use card.... Unfortunate!! read more

New ownership, same cozy spot--but the breakfast plate's feeling the change. Eggs came out cold, sausage tougher than a gym towel, and the pancakes required a knife (and maybe a prayer). You know how good a place is by the length of the wait and I had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. A cute old house from the early 1900s, the place has charm, good service, and delicious food at very reasonable prices. The servers have obviously been here a long time, so things flowed smoothly in my quest for some good chow. Mine was quick, friendy, and attentive, keeping my coffee topped-off whenever she came by. I had the Homestyle Breakfast ($13) with two eggs, hash browns, three slices of bacon, and a biscuit and gravy. There was so much food, I had to take half home and it was delish. The price was 2/3 the cost of similar breakfasts elsewhere where you are lucky to pay less than $20, making Dean's a definite TravelValue ... HOOAH! The only negative was me showing-up with not much cash and the sign on the front stated ¨We don't take debit/credit cards¨, so I had to run to an ATM down the street. On the outside it is a house. Inside, there is not very much seating so if it's busy you might have to wait a while for a table. The waitresses are old school and super sweet and know excellent customer service. The food is amazing, like an old school from scratch diner. The only thing that I could complain about is the wait for seating, other than that it was a perfect experience and I will be going back! read more

This place is always packed on the weekends. On a Friday my mother and I stopped to have lunch, not too busy but it was raining. OMG, lots of great food and reasonably priced. Not a pretentious restaurant, felt very welcomed, friendly staff. My mother had an omelette with hollandaise sauce and I had chicken fried steak (cheat day from keto!). But we will come back because I can get a keto omelette à la cart. I can't believe I haven't tried this place sooner! read more

Dean's was sold last year and has gone way downhill. Nothing is the same as it used to be. I have gone three or four times since noticing things were getting bad in hopes they would get the hang of it but it's gotten worse and worse. The bacon got smaller, they overcook the eggs and the hash browns got overly crisp and greasy. The food takes forever to get even when not busy and today I noticed a very bad smell in there and it wasn't food. I won't be going again. read more

When the new owner's took it over this year, we were concerned about whether the comfortable, flavorful, "homestyle" experience we were used to would remain. The new team has done great! The staff is super friendly and working hard to make people feel welcome, learning names of regulars, and carrying on a place with a great reputation. Not a fan of businesses that don't take cards. There are many reasons I feel this way, but it's not a good look. We were invited here by friends who come here often and enjoy it. They like the price for quantity and it makes sense. We had a pretty long wait as this place was busy for Sunday breakfast and then they messed up and couldn't read their own writing and thought we were a large group and not just 4. Being with someone who is recovering from medical stuff and waiting outside while other people are sat before us wasn't awesome. But we got seated eventually in this dingy cramped place. The service was poor to say the least. The waitress came to take our order and in the middle of my friend placing hers the waitress just starts talking to coworkers about someone's drink or something, totally ignoring us so she stopped and we waited while the waitress finished her conversation (that she started). Finally we could order, but she's either new to serving in general or is terrible at her job. I really do think it's the latter. Food was okay, nothing special. Usually with biscuits and gravy you get way more biscuits and I planned on taking some home with jam for later. They split them all open and cover them in gravy. That might seem like a great thing, but I've never had any place do it like this so it was unexpected. That meant not only was I not going to enjoy my biscuits the way I was planning, but now I have soggy food for later. Now you know in case you think you want to order them. The portions were large and the price cheaper than most, probably because of location. It was okay. I wouldn't seek it out, but if my friend's invited us again we would go. read more

Cool charm - I love the 50s era vibe. Waitresses are sweet and even sassy - adds to the character. But about the breakfast: it was stellar. Bacon is crisp and meaty, scrambled eggs have that whipped texture, hash browns are decadent and crunchy (like god intended). The side dish of biscuits and gravy rank among the best I had, and the buttermilk pancakes are light and sweet. Home run for breakfast- I hope this place never changes. read more

As a long-time patron of Dean's for over 15 years, it's difficult to write this review. We have always loved the generous, delicious meals and the fantastic homemade-style toast that has been a highlight of so many of our visits. This last trip, however, was a huge letdown. Despite the restaurant not being very busy, we waited nearly an hour for our food. When it finally arrived, my eggs Benedict was lukewarm at best, and the eggs were hard and crumbly. My husband's omelette was extremely greasy, and the toast was a sad, burnt, and tiny shadow of what we remember. The quality has declined so much that we honestly won't be returning. read more

Dean's Cafe is located in a very old bungalow along a busy highway. Inside, it's simple, but comfortable. If you're looking for cutting edge interior design, or cutting edge food for that matter, drive on by; this is not your kind of place. It's EXACTLY as the name implies; a place for good, well prepared American breakfasts and lunches at extremely affordable prices. We got there at 10:30 on a weekday morning, and the place was bustling. That's normally a good sign, and it was. Lots of satisfied customers filled the booths and their stomachs in the cozy environment. The over easy eggs I ordered were indeed cooked over easy. I requested my hash browns be cooked very crispy, and they were delivered hot and crispy. The sausage links were the best I've had in some time, and the rye bread toast was very good. The portions are more than generous; the couple that joined us needed doggie bags for their omelette and chicken-fried steak. We ordered smaller portions, but smaller by much. The coffee was decent too. Our server was no nonsense, but in a nice way. She got our orders right, and quickly. She fit right in. Dean's was my favorite spot but recently has slipped out of first place. I took my family of 4 adults and two children to breakfast. I ordered chicken fried steak and eggs breakfast with a pancake. I still think most of my breakfast was delicious except for the pancake. They have changed the flavor. The color is weird and it had an imitation flavor that I can't quite put my finger on..maybe cinnamon? I couldn't eat it.. The service was very slow. First, there were empty tables and people were left to wait for a table outside and it was a cold morning. Our order took a longtime to arrive. We had to ask for several things that they forgot like butter for my grandson's pancakes, toast, drinks. It was not the upbeat fun atmosphere it once was. It was also cold. They didn't turn on the cozy fireplace. It is-under new ownership and I am hoping they will improve with time. read more

Updated 2025 review: Deans was sold and I've given it several tries under the new ownership and it's just not the same anymore. It really saddens me. Menu changes, price hikes, smaller portions, no salads with certain meals, hamburger bun top was dry and crumbly. And they choose the whitest lettuce to add to it. And I'm not impressed with the wait staff. I found her unfriendly and not terribly attentive. Had to ask several times to refill my coffee and other things. And the specials are so expensive now! I wasn't expecting it to stay exactly the same but this isn't my Deans. Don't fix what wasn't broke. Going through the reviews from other old time patrons I can see I'm not alone! This place was amazing at one time but we rightly assumed things would go downhill once it changed hands recently. Their prices are still good but the amount of food you get has diminished, except for their pancakes (which are now rediculously large). The omelettes are still pretty good but some menu items are half the size they used to be, like the hash browns. The sausage gravy got weird too and the sausage part seems to have disappeared. We'll try it again eventually but for now I'm not super impressed with the new Dean's. read more

Tucked away out on the highway running towards estacada Carver and the rest of countryside Oregon is a small restaurant inside an old home sitting on a corner not bothering anybody. You'll see many many cars which will tell you they're open. They are never open and not have a ton of cars outside. Inside? Some of the best handmade, homemade, scratchmade, whatever you want to call it but it's not crap out of a box. It's not instant anything. It's real food prepared by real talent. And let me tell you these guys are great... Oh, did I tell you that the place is always packed. It doesn't do the food any justice by talking to you about it. It's better if you know that you are in a comfortable environment and no matter what you order, it comes out four star.... My favorites? Chicken fried steak, any omelette on the menu is a killer, strawberry French toast, and believe it or not their burgers! They're the right size...XL. Now that we have the kitchen under control, turn to the servers who are running around helping you with your meal and anything else you need. These ladies are the best! You are made to feel welcome and you receive the type of table service you used to get it your grandma's on Sundays when she would wait on you hand and foot and make sure you got fed and left her home happy. IT'S THE SAME DRILL HERE EVERY DAY! And I'm only going to say this once if you're reading my review, be sure to tip the lady's paper money and at least 15%. Loose change left on the table from your ticket don't count as a tip. These ladies work hard for their money so don't leave their money in your pocket. In closing the best thing about this place? It's the people inside working hard to feed you. It's the high standards of quality that keep people coming back. They don't open on Wednesdays so don't bitch. Okay, there's four of us that had breakfast on Friday October 17. The cafe is an older home converted into a restaurant and what I've read was formerly known as the Harmony House. It's a cash only business, so if you go and forget to bring cash, no worries they have an ATM inside. Friendly staff, food portions are huge so bring the appetite, you can order your eggs cooked almost anyway possible, hashbrowns were okay, sausage was excellent and the coffee easy to drink. You can hear the kitchen noises and this I thought gave the cafe a real homey feel, like having a meal at grandmas. Here's what I found interesting, the house is believed to be haunted. The waitress we had, said she's heard footsteps upstairs and another waitress told her she won't go into one of the rooms because she's heard children's voices. I'm giving this restaurant a five star review because it's different enough to make it interesting. read more

Like some of the other newer reviews have stated under new ownership it's just not the same people would come into this establishment for the amazing food and the atmosphere of the people that worked there I went in there yesterday and like other people stated it's usually packed you're waiting there's no place to park There was only a few cars in the parking lot and only a couple people when I went inside the lady brought me my coffee brought me a menu took my order another couple came in right after me and ordered after I did while sitting there waiting for my food I watched a waitress bring their food out to them Which you do not do in a restaurant establishment you bring out food by the order of the tickets were placed so that kind of irritated me as I was still waiting for my food it finally came out about six or seven minutes later and upon getting my food the waitress brought me white toast which I looked right at her and told her it was supposed to be an English muffin which is what I asked for and if anybody knows going into this place when you look at the menu right at the top of their breakfast it shows all their eggs what they're called and how they're supposed to be properly cooked I ordered my eggs over medium which states and everybody should know this in the cooking industry that the whites are to be cooked thoroughly with the yolks running my whites were not cooked all the way so there's the second strike the quality of food has went downhill upon getting my ticket and seeing that the waitress didn't even bother to put down any type of time or an English muffin so the Cook just decided to put out whatever he felt like instead of asking what I was supposed to have since she didn't write it down and the prices have went way up since new ownership $15 for what I had is not worth it and then on top of that another 350 for a cup of coffee almost $20 to have breakfast this is completely insane if this is how this place is going to be run and how the cooking is going to be a great place to go have breakfast is going to be no more the owner really needs to change how everything is get proper cooks that know how to cook and maybe drop the prices down a little bit I get it there is inflation but for the price of what I had it was not worth it and to charge 350 for a cup of coffee is insane read more
