The service is horrible. The guy with the ponytail is always outside smoking and the food he cooks is under cooked. Stands behind the bar and brushes his hair, yuck so disgusting. Place is very dirty and greasy. Prices are too high especially when nothing is consistent. Front glass door has been broken for a few years now. Fish is outstanding when cooked properly. I never see anyone washing their hands. It says they are open till 9 that's not true. My husband and I use to go here every Sunday for dinner the first 5 or 6 years when they first opened fantastic everything. Now we won't go at all. read more

It's Monday evening, one person at the bar enjoying his beer watching a Ducks game on the TV...two other guys feeding the slots ... I ordered my dinner, 3-piece fish and chips, deep fried mushrooms...and a cold bud light while I wait. Dinner arrived well packed, I paid and off to the hotel. In my room, watching Fast and Loud on the TV...I unpacked my grub. WOW, the mushrooms are huge, tasty...fantastic...!!! The fish was nicely battered, very tasty...equally fantastic. OK, so the proprietor is a Duck's fan, for some of you that's a plus and for me it's something to deal with and try not to let it mess up my focus on the food. If you are looking for a menu, it is on the chalk board behind the bar.... A little weird, but what do you expect, didn't I warn you that this is a U of O joint? This is where the place shines. The fish and chips plus popcorn shrimp are mighty good. The filets are reasonably sized but if it is only fish you'll probably want at least 3. The iced tea is fresh and not from concentrate and if you're thirsty the refills come quickly. It's a pub, on the plus side they seem to have four brews on tap. On the minus side, one of them is some University of Oregon special. The fries are the coated variety but not as obnoxious as some. Had they been fresh cut, with the skin on I would probably have added that last star.... Even if he is a duck fan. The place is small, clean, comfortable. The prices are half of what other pubs would charge so I'll definitely be coming back for dinner and try one of the other three brews to see how they are. A couple of big screen TVs are in the place to enjoy. Pub: Leave your under 21 friends at home or in the car, they won't be allowed inside. It's not on the main drags that I frequent but it was worth the drive. I can't wait to come back after football season. ( well, probably before then, but not with my Beavers buddies. read more

The only reason that we've returned on occasion is they have 3 of the video poker machines we like to play. The food is terrible for the price they charge. We ordered prawns and chips the other day. $15 for .6 small pre frozen shrimps and a handful of ok fries. Want extra (small) tarter? 75 cents. Gaffers is a great place to relax and unwind with a basket of incredible fish and chips at a good price. I recently had their fish chunk basket and loved it. This little place makes some of the best damn tarter sauce in the world. Their fish and chips are cooked to order, what you get is a simple, delicious meal. Get extra tartar, it is like fifty cents and money well spent. Their burgers are good too, but this is our go to place for airy battered fish and, by request, crispy fries. I think what makes their food so great for me is that it is not crazy salty. It lets the tartar sauce do the walking... Yes, one guy works all the roles. So, sit back and be patient. read more

Well it's been a while since I have been here. Time changes everything, now it's famous. OR infamous. You can't just order fish, the tartar sauce is Mayo sauce. Too bad, they had the best I've ever had. Prices are double and portions are half as big fries are McDonald's quality. And you must have them. Sure it's been awhile since I've been here. I went here a few months ago and was excited because it's close to where I live. I was extremely disappointed in how small the portion sizes were for the amount I spent. 'Fish and Chips' shouldn't mean Fish and/or cole slaw and chips. I believe when I asked for the coleslaw it would be in addition to the fries, otherwise the description is misleading. I would never go back here again unless they increase the portion sizes as they way too expensive in my opinion for the amount of food served. read more

For years my partner and I would go to the Tigard location a couple times a month for what we considered the best fish and chips in the Portland area. After they permanently closed last year we decided to give the Gladstone location a try. It was ok, but not nearly as good. Maybe we got them on an off day, who knows. I have to admit I never got to try the food, but that's because the staff there needs some serious lessons in customer service. It was my first time here. Online they claim to open at 10am. I drove all the way there because I was craving some fish and chips and arrived at 10:25am to a guy sitting outside smoking who said he runs the place and they're opening at 11 because he's running it alone today. I went back to the car for 5 minutes and watched him proceed to smoke his cigarette. I decided to go back and tell him I don't mind waiting and just having a beer while he sets up since it states online they open at 10. He told me he can't have me in there while he is counting his till. I asked how long it will take him to count it and he said 20 minutes. I have counted many tills and this was obviously a lie, but I said no problem I will wait 20 if he will let me in in 20 minutes to sit and have a beer while he sets up, I just didn't want to wait in the cold. He told me I would wait until 11. They clearly need to change their hours of operation, or get to work rather than smoking for 10 minutes after they claim to have been open for half an hour already. A very off putting experience, I will never be back. read more

I was super excited to try "Gaffers famous fish and chips". Called for take out order during lunch time. Guy on the phone was pleasant and patient while I went through the menu with him. Decided on the 3 piece fish and chips with a side of coleslaw to try it. Drove over to pick it up a few minutes later. Lady at the counter wasn't unfriendly but seemed almost bothered and distracted. Inside was busy with people seated and I could see a man in the back cooking. Waited a couple minutes and got my order. Had to request utensils which was surprising since I ordered coleslaw. Immediately opened up my food after getting to the car to ensure it wasn't cold or mushy but to my dismay it was very cold and mushy. I'm quite sure it was sitting for huge sometime before I arrived. Hard to believe when I only had a 2 min drive to the restaurant but the fries were greasy, cold and limp, the fish was cold and greasy. A very big disappointment. Next tried the coleslaw which was yellowish in color and did not look at all fresh. Even less appealing taste. Basically threw entire meal away. Such a sad experience after all the hype and good reviews. Needless to say I won't be back. 2 stars only because restaurant appeared clean and man in the phone was friendly. read more
