Can't recommend this place enough. The food and atmosphere were such a pleasant experience.

We were in a date night rut and I wanted to try something new. So I hopped on Yelp and searched for "date night" and found this gem. So fun! I was a little confused how to get in so we walked in to the restaurant (The Hive Social) and asked. They let us to the secret stair case and said we'd need to figure out the rest for ourselves. And we did. The portrait swung open and we discovered the coolest bar! The ambiance was very cozy and perfect for our date night. Our server was very friendly and made some suggestions when asked. We ordered a couple rounds of drinks and several small plates to share. They even staggered our apps to not overwhelm our cozy table. Everything was delicious. I met a friend here ,probably the busiest part of the brunch service. It was about a 20 minute wait which didn't seem too bad and I had plenty of time to play catch up with my friend. This place has 3 different venues in one: Coffee Shop, Speak Easy in the basement and a restaurant. We ordered cocktails and the Bloody Mary was loaded with marinated veggies and was pretty darn tasty. I ordered a Delicata Squash roasted concoction that was so delicious, I spent all night on my phone trying to find a recipe to replicate it. It was served in a huge bowl with roasted sweet potatoes as the base, surrounded by braised Italian Kale and the delicata on top. The menu said it had toasted hazelnuts, pepitas pesto and a honey yogurt tahini sauce. I took half of it home because the portion was huge. My friend had sweet potato spice French toast made with Challah bread. It was gigantic and she barely made a dent in it. My sister and I walked in on a Friday night around 6 PM. Fortunately we were easily able to be seated at a table. We tried the Crab Cakes which were delicious though I do have to admit the smoke in the aioli overpowered the flavor of the crab cake. Their drink menu is amazing. We tried 3 different drinks a piece and none of them disappointed. If you love an espresso martini then theirs will quickly become your new favorite one. This place was almost a 5/5 for us until we got to dessert. First, the good: The place is so sick! From the way you enter, the passcode, the vibe... it just all works so well. You feel like you're part of an exclusive club. We ordered the focaccia bread, beef stroganoff and the prime rib. Highly recommend that you come on a Friday so you can take advantage of the prime rib offering. It was delicious and the truffle garlic mash and veggies that come with are excellent accompaniments. The beef stroganoff is rich and tasty as well. The bread was fine but definitely felt overpriced for $8. Now the dessert. First of all, after reading the reviews about the dessert options, we were excited to see what we could order. Our waiter delivered the bill without telling us about dessert. When we asked about it, he told us the three options. We ordered the chocolate tart and he came back a few minutes later to tell us they ran out. So we ordered the strawberry cobbler. Clearly, this restaurant needs assistance with naming their desserts because we got a dense cake not a cobbler. There were only strawberries on the side of the dessert and not in the "cobbler". It was served in a cast iron mini pan but it was cold? It was just awful. Thankfully, they removed it from our bill since we couldn't stomach it but needless to say, we were very confused by the dish. The place is wonderful, I speak highly of it and tell anyone and everyone about the place. Once had Sarah as my barkeep the last couple of times. She's is outstanding, her drinks are and she's great. I had Mel, I believe, my first two times in and she was great. I apologize I don't know the young man that is the front of the house greeter he's a like gent. The chef does a great job. The staff as a whole are wonderful. I apologize I do not know the other lovely lady behind the bar my last time but she been there I believe a couple of my visits and was wonderful too. The live music nights, the music in general, the feel, the ambiance when the whole place is full is amazing. I am glad I found out about this establishment and I drive from Beaverton to visit. I've been coming to The Hive Social for several years and somehow I never knew about The Hardware Store. This speakeasy is located downstairs from The Hive Social and is not to be missed. Live music, amazing cocktails, and great food. The bar looks like it built out of the prohibition era. I couldn't tell you what I had to drink, but they were great cocktails. My wife and I shared some plates which included their meatballs, pasta with pesto and chicken, and the brussel sprouts. Each dish tasted exceptional. The service here is great as well. A group of seven of us (all in late 30s-40s) went to The Hardware Store on Saturday evening at about 8 pm. We were visiting family in the area and had two people in our group local to the area who had been there several times in the past. We first went and checked in and were told there was a 10-15 minute wait. The hostess was very kind, took our number and sent us to the upstairs bar to wait for a table. We were greeted by a friendly bartender who took our drink orders (cocktails and wine) and we enjoyed our beverages while chatting by the bar. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with large velvet green booths, all new, updated and well done. The drinks were all great. The downstairs hostess came upstairs to let us know our table was ready, and we paid and went downstairs. So far, we were all really happy with our experience. The prices of the drinks were all around $15-20+ but we were all okay with it given the good service (thus far), high end atmosphere, etc. There were people in there but it was a pretty mellow Saturday evening. We were given a nice large area to sit and thanked the hostess. The waitress came and was clearly a little overwhelmed but took our drink orders. I mentioned a drink my husband had upstairs and asked if I could have it, but was told they had a different menu down here and I needed to order from that menu. I looked it over while the others ordered their drinks, and when she came back to me, I asked if I could go upstairs to order the drink I wanted, and bring it down. She said sure. I put in an order for a couple food items with her, and she left. My brother in law kindly offered to go upstairs and order the drink and was gone for quite a long time. We learned that when he was upstairs, he went to the bar and mentioned I wanted a drink from his bar. The bartender's mood shifted and he said he had 10 drinks ahead of my BIL, and asked him to go downstairs to order. My BIL informed him he was told the downstairs bar didn't have the ingredients, and was sent up here. The bartender was annoyed and asked my BIL to go downstairs for 10 minutes and come back again to order. My BIL replied that he was happy to wait at the bar instead and took a seat. After a long while, the bartender curtly said that my BIL would have to pay for the drink up here, which my BIL of course agreed to. My BIL said it was very uncomfortable and the bartender was being rude (a couple sitting at the bar also mentioned this). We are guessing he was overwhelmed and didn't handle it well. He brought the drink downstairs, no problem. We were all sitting for a while and noticed that my BIL never received the beer he ordered from the waitress downstairs. And after about 45 minutes I asked about the food I had ordered (she hadn't checked in with us at all during that time, and I should mention it was not busy at all - several tables open). The waitress said she forgot to put it in. That was it. No offer to quickly put it in, no offer to comp a drink, no real apology. We asked for the bill and split it between two cards. When we got the receipts and cards back, my husband found they had given both him and his brother (the other payer) copies of my husband's receipt-so he assumed he was double charged. He went to the front to bring this to their attention and explained how he was upset by the poor service throughout the evening. He received a quick response that they had printed the receipt twice (didn't charge twice) and were short staffed that evening. We are all understanding people and my sister in law ran restaurants for years, we all had food service jobs and are sympathetic but really just disappointed in this place. I'm writing this review because the employees there just didn't seem to care about the issues we raised. They had an acoustic artist playing that evening who was phenomenal. If you go there on a different day with different staff, I'm sure you'd have a great time. But for the price and ambiance, we really expected better service. read more

A new little speakeasy has popped up in Oregon City. I came here late on a Saturday evening with a lovely couple who just needed a drink as they had night without their kids. Call me lucky as apparently I'm their definition of a fun time (but not in any inappropriate way). Anywho this speakeasy is located under the Hide Social. Pay close attention to the ads because you'll get clues to the passcode. Once you enter its pretty spacious. Brightly lit compared to other speakeasies I've been too. Perfect for those elderly who have bad eye sights. They have live music which was awesome and the wait can be awhile. But you can always get a few drinks at the upstairs bar while you wait. Unfortunately, we didn't order food because we were simply so full from dinner, but their menu sounded amazing. The drinks were good. I had ordered the cocktail with bone broth in it. I am fortunate enough to be close to this speakeasy from Canby. This is such a unique place and it elevates the Hive to another level in every way. My coworkers and I caught wind of its opening. And venturing here for the first time is certainly an adventure. It's never easy to park around this area. You either have to park a block or two away at the library or the torta restaurant parking lot across the street. You enter through the Hive entrance, go past the bathrooms, and straight to the back of the bar. To the right is a brightly lit spiral staircase. Take that down and spoiler alert, at the bottom of the stairs, the PIN number is printed on the wall behind you. Input those digits to the left of the painting ahead of you and it will open. The expression of excitement and wonder from the newcomers when the door opens is half the fun. Our server hands down was the sweetest and most accommodating person I've met in a while. Our table number started at 3 and we ended up at about 12 within the hour. She always made sure we had enough drinks and food. And I was impressed she was able to keep up! The table started off with a monster mash. It was a sharable fruity tequila lime slurry that was either in a large Frankenstein or Elizabeth ceramic head. Taste was hit or miss with our group. The food however was seriously so much more delicious than I expected, better than the Hive, although if you are craving something upstairs, they can order that for you too. Of honorable mention are two items, the butternut salad and the butternut stroganoff. All I can say is wow. The salad was slightly smokey, sweet, and savory all at once. The pecorino helped bring it all together. There was a ton of texture and flavors playing on the palate. We ended up ordering more than one plate of that. And then there was the crowning jewel, the stroganoff! There was charred butternut squash on a bed of perfectly al dente pappardelle. There was a generous amount of mushrooms added in. And I don't know what they put in the cream sauce but it was intensely flavorful and velvety. At the same time it was light and balanced enough where I did not at any point feel like it became too heavy. I basically inhaled it and we ended ordering a few more quantities of that too. Anyways, there were so many of us and we ended being there so long, our server offered to move us to the back corner, where there was a numerous amount of lounge chairs and couches around a very large coffee table. It was a nice intimate area for us compared to being by the door earlier. Overall really loved the elegant ambiance. It is mostly dimmer, with a red and gold color scheme. Some elements of Alice in Wonderland was scattered here and there. I immensely enjoyed everything about this place. Have been ranting and raving it with everyone I know. I purchased the membership for my husband's birthday as this seemed like a highly rated speakeasy. While it's fun to find your way in, and the ambiance is completely dialed in, the service, food options and drinks are less than desirable. When I presented my husband's membership gift while we were there, he was excited! We ordered from a limited food menu, to which they only had 1 gluten free item, the tacos, we chose to look past that until the tacos came. We both took bites of our separate taco meals and immediately my mouth was ON FIRE as was his! It's so dark in there we couldn't see what was on them. It took roughly 15 min to flag someone down to mention how excruciatingly spicy our tacos were and they were inedible. The waitress shined a light on them and immediately we all saw the chili paste in globs on the tacos! She informed us that it wasn't supposed to be that way and took our tacos asking if we wanted new ones. At this point we said no thanks as we'd already been there for an hour. For the second time we arrived, we came with friends. It took us over an hour to get a table. We told them that we'd tried for days to call and get a hold of someone for a reservation but the phone always said the mailbox was full. They didn't seem to care about our frustrations. The staff were very rude so we had one drink each and left. The third time we came, we took my MIL who's a bourbon fan. I again we could never reach anyone to get an actual reservation and it took again an hour to be seated. Our food took over an hour to get to us and it was terrible, as were the drinks. Super small drinks too priced at around $20 a drink. Being that we paid a membership to be there, one would think you'd have an easier time getting a seat or a reservation. One would also think that with the amount of positive reviews, that of our three visits, we'd have had a much better experience. read more
