I pride myself on knowing my tiki bars. Having traveled to and sought a great many across the country and this my friend, just might be my favorite. First let's talk about the ambience of this place. I mean, let's face it. You can have crappy cocktails with killer ambience, and be successful. But this place delivers on both. My favorite part is that they have a real regional theme to their custom made mugs. And then there's the cocktails. They truly deliver on flavor, recipe, creativity, and the key to any good tiki cocktail is, of course the name. We've come in and sat at the bar, which was a delight, and then we also sat at a table. The wife and I showed up back to back nights! We ended up really enjoying this spot and will come back just for it. On the second night, we discovered another establishment upstairs and will have to make a stop next time. Probably our favorite spot in Astoria now. Cute Tiki bar I had no idea existed. I visit Astoria at least a couple times a year and have blindly walked by this cute bar on several occasions. This day we walked by and stopped in our tracks and peeked in the door. The sweet servers behind the counter greeted us and lured us in. I had trouble deciding what drink to order. I usually don't care for time drinks because 9 out of 10 times they taste over done and poorly executed. It was suggested I try Mutant Skull plus it comes in a cool mug. I loved the cocktail Mutant Skull $14 Coconut, pineapple, banana, and guava sing behind a powerful punch of rum. I also ordered Pork Sliders $12 Korean braised pork, pickled onion, fried cabbage, spicy mayo, Hawaiian sweet roll. These sliders were so soft, moist and delicious. Great pairing with the Mutant Scull Cocktail. All in all a great visit I really enjoyed the friendly staff who gave me tips on new places to go. read more

This was a fun addition to our long-anticipated trip to Astoria, OR. Any child of the 80s knows what I mean. Adore how this fab tiki spot lovingly leans into the Goonies like Liverpool does the Beatles (if you know, you know). The decor was fun and very detailed including jade tiles handmade by the owner. While the drinks were spot on and made with great care by our bartender - may I call out how she offered almost any tail on menu (specials included) in an NA version - the food was a surprising treat. A satisfyingly warm and flavorful chicken fried rice, the meat being new to the menu. My wife and I came back for a second visit, because we really wanted to love this place, as it definitely delivers on atmosphere. But this time it wasn't the drinks that were the issue; it was that the service drifted along at a pace that came off as borderline aloof. There was a lot of extended chit-chat with customers while making drinks, which would certainly be charming if that was you talking to the bartender and not someone else still waiting on your drink for 15 minutes. The cocktails are made with skill, I'm sure, but the paradoxical waiting while seeing absolutely zero urgency on a busy evening caused us to bounce. Note: the bar upstairs isn't any quicker - we timed the bartender for a single drink... it took this man just under 3 minutes to make one drink while 4 patrons waited in a queue at the bar. For those not in the know: that is a ludicrous amount of time. As a former restaurant owner and bartender, I can safely say that the indifference to expediency here comes off as arrogant. To be fair, this place would be great if you're just looking to soak up a vibe. Less great if you came in actually thirsty. If that's you, maybe come on a Tuesday in February, because it is a cool looking spot. read more

Was looking for some fun drinks while in the area and yelped this location. The awesome cups that brought me in. Unfortunately, when I got my drink, it wasn't in a fun cup, and I was very disappointed as that is the whole reason I went to the location. A regular next to me told me that you have to ask for a special cup, which is silly, so I ended up having to ask her to pour my drink into one of the fun cups. All in all, it's a good drink, just annoyed. You have to ask for a fun cup, and don't just automatically get one. I did learn, though, that there aren't all multiples of cups due to some of the mugs being from the owners own collection. read more

We always try to stop by when we are coming through Astoria because we enjoy it so much. Always fun drinks and good food. This time we got to try the new Japanese whiskey bar located upstairs. There are 4 stools to sit at the bar and another area to stand. As with the Tiki Bar downstairs, it is always good to make reservations, especially on the weekend. Our bartender was awesome. He explained the different Japanese cocktails and whiskey. There are many different ones to try depending on your likes. You can also order a Tiki drink from downstairs as well as food. My husband got a refreshing highball and a whiskey neat to try. He enjoyed both. I got the Mutant Skull cocktail. It was delicious and served in one of their locally made mugs. As for food I got the pork fried rice, which seemed to be a never ending bowl of deliciousness. I also appreciated the fun hot sauce and chili condiments up in the Japanese bar to try. My husband got the Loco Moco. It comes with a savory curry gravy which kicks it up a notch from just the standard brown gravy. I would order both again. Tiki? Yes, please. You'll find a true love of rum here. The glassware is on point. The staff are friendly and want you to find a cocktail that fits your taste and needs. I heard them training a newbie and discussing allergies to everything from nuts to pineapple. When drinking tiki, please be aware of such things, but they can also guide you. Update. Finally made it back!! This is one of the most beautiful bars I've seen! Went mainly to see the upstairs Yakimon bar, but the tiki-esque vibe downstairs was so fun that we had drinks down there too. The drinks are rum-centric, which is what you'd expect walking into a tropical vibes/tiki kind of place like this. There were also a few non-rum drinks on the menu if you're not into it. Super welcoming atmosphere, fantastic tiki mugs, fantastic staff, and a great rum selection! Don't even get me started on the Japanese whisky upstairs, yum. read more

We came in at 8:30 as a party of two on Saturday night. We were able to be seated right away despite there being lots of people! We enjoyed the decor, the bar and the art. The art studio next door actually makes all of the tiki mugs that they use! They even have a a TIKI MUG VENDING MACHINE, so bring $20 in cash! We are still kicking ourselves that we did not have any cash on us for the machine. Their bar features cocktails that mostly feature rum, but there are rum free options as well. If you are a rum plantation lover, this is the place you want to be. I ordered two drinks here- Purple orchid-blooms in your mouth. It is very flowery with just the right amount of sweet that doesn't overshadow the gin. It takes no guesswork to taste the peach, passion fruit, lime, ginger and gin. Cobra's Fang- this is spicy as in botanical. This is very flavorful, balanced and packs a punch! We not only appreciated the ambiance, but we talked to the bartenders about how Dead Man's Isle came to be. This is not only an absolute Astoria must do, but for anyone who loves tiki & rum bars-this is hands down the best one we have ever been to. We cannot come back soon enough. read more

I cannot get enough of this place! No seriously, I went 3 times in a week. Granted, one of those times was because I left my purse there and had to drive 3 hours from Seattle to get it, BUT it made for another lovely excuse to try more of their amazing cocktails and enjoy the fun atmosphere they have! Also I cannot speak highly enough of their staff, especially Jamie! He made sure my purse was safe, was so exceptionally kind and funny, and was also very patient with me while I picked out tiki mugs to buy. He even gave my husband and I a couple free t-shirts after our long drive back to pick up my purse, which was a sweet way to take the edge off of 6hrs of driving in one day. Also, a few notes if you're a tiki bar fan like my husband and I: this is a high quality tiki bar owned by a well-known tiki mug artist, and it's very clear their art extends far beyond mugs. The bar itself is so beautifully detailed, with unique local flare and some fun shoutouts to The Goonies, and the drinks are exceptional in quality and presentation. This venue is such a fun experience in downtown Astoria! Great location and excellent decor give a tasteful, wry nod to nautical flair. Occasional ambient thunder was accompanied by flickering lights, a cool touch. The drinks are some of the best cocktails in town, and will have you feeling like you've been stashed away in a tropical hideaway. I can imagine this being a true gem when our dark & stormy winter arrives! The food was really, really good and offered something special that you can't get anywhere else in town. My wife and I devoured the pork sliders, a plate of yakisoba with pulled pork, and most of an order of tots with an Asian-inspired ketchup mixed with gochujang. My wife enjoyed sipping on a Pina colada with some crushed macadamia nut, while I set sail with a Navy Grog. Round two after we began eating saw another Pina Colada for her, while I discovered my new favorite: Sleepwalking Sailors!
