Based on the reviews, I was excited to try this out, but it clearly didn't live up to the hype. I stopped in at peak lunchtime hours and the place was empty. I wondered if it was even open. The guy at the counter wasn't very friendly so I was happy when a different girl stepped up to take my order. I chose a slider with fries to go. My order came up quick but that wasn't a surprise since I'm was the only customer. The one positive thing was the fries. They were really good. However, the chicken was very dry. I love Dave's! They're halal and an LA chain, so don't expect Nashville hot chicken. This is their own spin on hot chicken. I had tried a tender and slider as medium and hot. Too much bread. This time, both me and my sister got two tenders each. One hot and the other was extra hot. Not all that spicy...has my spice tolerance gone up or was it an off day? I'm down to try the reaper and the extra hot again next time. Parking is interesting. It didn't feel like they had a ton of spots but there were a few open since I came way after the usual lunch hour on a weekday. No line at the drive thru either. I've heard a lot about this, and love hot chicken, so I had to try it when I was nearby- once the initial frenzy had died down. I went at noon on a weekday, and there was just a short line, but it got busier and the drive-through was also steady. Side note: to me, this is not really hot chicken. Hot chicken is actual pieces of chicken- think the best fried chicken you ever had- plus serious spices in the coating. Maybe it has to be real chicken pieces for me because that's the way I had it first, at HCT and a couple of Nashville places. Maybe it's that I like dark meat (I usually get mine "hot dark" at HCT.) This... this is a tenders place, like Cane's, that has spice in the coating. Tenders, sliders, but not actual hot chicken. And hey, I like tenders once in a long while, with or without sauces etc. But it's not the same. I'd say this isn't exactly a competitor to Cane's or HCT, but kinda in between. So. I was disappointed when I came in and saw that. Sigh. But I was hungry, and I like tenders too, and wanted to try the flavors. I got a #3 meal, with a hot tender and a reaper slider. They make you sign a waiver for reaper- no, really. "This could cause death!" Service was friendly and helpful, and my order was up in only 5 minutes or so. It's a pretty good amount of food (I also added a side of mac, and a fountain drink.) The hot tender was big, perfectly cooked crispy and spicy on the outside, meaty and moist on the inside. Their hot is between HCT's warm and hot- spicy, not crazy. But I like spice, your mileage may vary. I gobbled that up. Comes with fries, lightly seasoned, crispy and good. And good with their sauce, though that is pretty much mayo and ketchup: creamy and sweet and not much else. Also came with a little stack of good pickle slices. The slider was not a smaller piece of chicken as I'd feared- a decent tender was hanging out of the bun. Reaper is hot. Not as tongue-numbing as HCT's holy, but pretty darn hot. Glad I chose it on the slider, with bread, slaw, and sauce to calm it down a bit. No need for a waiver, but unless you really like heat pass this up. The mac helped calm my mouth too. Not home-made style, but a pretty good industrial mac: creamy, a bit soupy, nice big elbow noodles. Disappointed that there's not real sweet tea, and the Coke machine must have been off- the syrup mix wasn't right or something. Others have said their Coke is like McDonald's, and that is not my experience, but maybe on a good day it is. Also, it was pretty loud inside, purposely due to the interior design. Comfy enough seating, noise was tolerable but a little annoying. The menu is small but with enough options to build something big or small (not many for vegetarians, but, chicken place...) A welcome addition to this side of town, squeezing into a big market with something slightly different. Still not hot chicken to me, but let's say hot-chicken-style tenders. Good. "Dave's sauce" is kind of mild. Not overly flavorful. The "kale slaw/pickle" combo is a great flavor, and the seasoning - almost tastes sweet on top of all the cayenne. As someone who isn't crazy about heat - I felt their medium was a Hot Chicken Takeover "warm." No real kick, no heat, just flavor (which was good). The slider makes it easy to consume. The Good: Tenders are huge. If you take like 3 or 4 of Canes Tenders and put them together you'll get the equivalent of ONE TENDER at this place. They're airy, crunchy, crispy, and well flavored on the outside. Lots of moist chicken on the inside as the breading does not outweigh and overpower the chicken. Hot flavor is good with a nice bit of sizzle that creeps up on you but doesn't destroy your palate. The pickles and slaw balances out the heat . Crinkle Cut fries are seasoned well and delicious. Dave's sauce is plentiful and it's like they can't wait to give you hella free packets of it where Popeyes on the other hand are stingy as hell on sauces and want to charge you an additional quarter per sauce. The Bad: The sides are bland. Well intentioned but bland. For example the MAC and CHEESE is void of soul. There are a lot of reviews with folks talking about how delicious and awesome it is but they must have grown up watching FRIENDS, MAD ABOUT YOU, FAMILY TIES, SEX AND THE CITY, FALCON CREST, or DALLAS. I grew up on MARTIN, LIVING SINGLE, A DIFFERENT WORLD, THE FRESH PRINCE, ONE ON ONE, FRANKS PLACE and 106 & PARK, and expect soulful baked Mac and Cheese that momma or grandma would make and this just wasn't it for me. It's good for certain people and cultures but not for me if you know what I'm saying. It's literally just noodles in a sauce and nothing else. If you want a half decent fast food quasi soulful Mac and Cheese then Popeyes does a half decent one. Let me be clear that I did not come here with Popeyes expectations at all but I'm just making various points. The Kale Slaw is well intentioned but needed more slaw dressing or something as the veggies that encompass it were fresh and crisp but overall it was DRY. The two slices of WHITE BREAD is pointless as it's like for decoration as folks expect to see it at the bottom of archetypical HOT CHICKEN OR NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN dishes but I wound up throwing it in the trash. Furthermore Dave's needs to get up off of more crinkle fries in your platters and not be so SKIMPY. I definitely got a kids meal portion of fries in a $12 platter. The order included one chicken tender at the Hot level and two chicken tenders at the medium level. I personally think the Hot level was much better than the medium level, at least for me. They always just come off cheap I guess compared to all others. Dave's does them perfectly though. Crunchy all around, perfectly cooked inside. Lightly seasoned which was great. Mac and cheese was amazing! The pictures look pretty meh, but don't let it dissuade you. They are delicious. As an aside, I feel like they do the same thing with their cokes as McDonald's does because the fountain drinks tastes exactly like it. I had three sodas haha. Just right down the street from me. You cannot miss this place! Don't walk, RUN! Dave's is the OG LA Hot chicken spot that has been branching out all over. They opened their first Cbus store on 9/30. The place was packed with drive thru lines around 3 blocks away. The general takeout and dine wait was about an hr on the first day. They know what they are doing. I have high expectations since I have been to their LA location and have been waiting for this one to open for over a year now. They did not disappoint. The staff is kind and generous. They greeted all their guests and welcomed folks in. We tried their slider and tender combos. Their spice levels go from no spice to light mild to mild to medium to hot to extra hot and off-course the reaper. You are asked to sign a waiver to taste the reaper. We tried our sliders in hot and extra hot and got our tenders with reaper spice. Trust me I love spice, their hot and extra hot are definitely enjoyable. The meat is tender and juicy. Slider buns are soft and lightly toasted, with layer of sweet kale slaw and pickles. The bite is heavenly. Trust me you will be hooked! Fries were crispy on the outside and perfectly seasoned. They serve everything with their custom Dave's sauce which is more like savory version of the Chick-fil-A sauce but better. It has hints of garlic and cayenne. They have packets of honey on side which pair well with the tenders. The Reaper tenders were no joke, we could eat them but we had sweats on our foreheads and gasping for water. We did not die just slight discomfort. Try it at your own risk. Overall this place is going to give other fried chicken places a run for their money! HCT better watch out!
