Yuuuummmmm. We recently moved here from bc where there is an amazing food scene and were skeptical of what we might find here- thank god for this place! The dandan noodles with pork, the chicken bao and the Brussels sprout salad are among our faves. They make a mean spicy marg and a delish Moscow mule. I've definitely thought about licking my plate clean every time I've been there. 9.8/10 read more

I always come here for the dan dan noodles and even bring some back with me to Toronto cus they're that good. Not today though. I don't know if they changed chefs or are okay with giving under-average food now. I ordered two portions of dan dan noodles and this is what they gave me: 1/2 the amount of the usual noodles (they don't give a bountiful amount but this was only 3-4 bites of noodles...) The meat sauce was literally SOUP, a 1/4 inch of oil at the top, and the meat were in chunks, showing that the sauce wasn't cooked long enough to serve. The meat is usually stewed to become tender. If the dan dan noodles aren't ready to serve don't give it to someone getting take-out, hoping they won't notice just to make the sale. The noodles aren't even for me!! It's for my buddies back in Toronto.. they're gonna be sad to get oil noodle soup instead read more

Over priced and over rated in my opinion. I'm a Toronto foodie and I saw good ratings on this restaurant so wanted to give it a try but I was a little disappointed. The chicken wings, which they claimed was the best in town, was just okay . Flavour wise was good but the wings are a little dry and not crispy. The signature steamed pork belly bun was good but the beef brisket was too dry and not enough taste to it. The other dishes were average I'd say. Laksa broth was good and hearty with a little kick but pricey for the size . Overall I'd give 3.5 stars. read more

I'll admit it - I've been dubbed as an Asian food snob (I blame Markham for my high standards) by friends but this place impressed me like no tomorrow! DatSun doesn't take reservations and the place is packed to the brim even on weekdays - they are closed Sunday and only open for dinner service. We had to wait about 40 mins for a table which is something I wouldn't usually do but I heard such good things here, I couldn't resist. The app that they use is great - they text/ call my phone to notify the table is ready so it gave a chance to explore Elgin Street. Amazing and attentive service but sometimes it is hard to differentiate the servers from customers (they wear street clothes, no uniform) but once you flag one down - they are amazing and very patient as they explain the menu. Their fried chicken baos can give Toronto a run for its money! I had their tuna tartar - it was fresh but not very filling for the $ but it's seafood so I can't complain there. Noodles are the way to go here. Amazing service, great atmosphere (although it can get very loud and it's quite dim), and great food. If I'm ever back in Ottawa, I will make a point to come back here. read more

Have been to Datsun a couple of times, and both times were solid good experiences. If you are looking for a cool place to hang out with an eclectic mix of fusion goodness, look no further. From the food items to the drinks that Datsun is concocting. The only thing you need to bring is your sense of adventure. Both times I've been, I arrived to a warm greeting by the host/hostess. The place is anything but intimate. Wide Open and loud would be the best way to describe. Shown to table and at first glance on the menu, it's hard to figure out what to order. Not only are there some wildly different types of dishes, the items are really arranged in the normal format you'd expect (ie: apps, main, desserts). If you go with friends, it's best to order a bunch of different dishes (as the servers will recommend) and share some small bites. And that's exactly what I've done. One of my faves on the menu is the pork belly steam bun. Moist, tender, juicy, and oh so good ! The papaya salad is fantastic as well. The servers are very cool and welcoming and we had such a great time that ours even did shots with us ! How great is that ? Overall, Datsun is a fab place to hang out with friends and share some light bites. Definitely try one of their drinks as well. Service is attentive and friendly. Any of the food items I've tried has been solidly good ! So why only the 4 star versus a 5 star rating... The price of all this. Datsun is not cheap, in fact an evening with drinks can easily be north of $150. That being said. I like this place and I'll be going back. read more

Holy Smokes - this place was Gold! The Baos were unreal. Soft, steamed buns...packed with flavour. We started with the pork belly and crispy chicken - absolutely incredible. We then moved onto the shrimp dumplings. At first I expected them to be all seafood-ish but it was just a hint. That was nice since it was full of ginger/garlic/onion but not over powering. We then had the curried cauliflower - fried in a tempura style but not too much curry All in all, Datsun is a sharing plate restaurant. The dishes aren't complicated and that's why it works. Simple dishes and just done very well. I'll be back again for sure. Loved it read more

Delicious Asian-inspired food! Their buns are tasty and the food in general has a lot of flavour, but is not overpowering. I really enjoy their curry dishes for the blend of spices they use, as well as their drinks, which are beautifully presented, and also delicious to sip on! I have sat at the bar and gotten a large table with friends. Service is consistent and friendly! read more

This is a totally hipster place, so if you're not interested in that, don't read on: this place isn't for you. My friends and I met up here last Friday because we couldn't get a table next door at El Camino. It turned out to be a delightful, spontaneous experience. The menu is limited and we were notified of some exclusions, so that made decisions a little harder. With a variety of food observances around the table, it didn't end up being as conducive to sharing as I'd hoped. Our friends got the vegetarian bao and really liked it. I took one look and wasn't sure how to eat it. It really is messy. On a carb-free kick, I opted for the grilled mackerel, and it didn't disappoint. It was succulent, fresh and melted in my mouth. My husband had the Ramen and said it was delicious. We were still hungry after our initial plate, so we split the shrimp dumplings (carbs be damned!) and what a brilliant idea that was. I should have just ordered those first. They were amazing. I would definitely come back here to enjoy another yummy cocktail and the delicious Shrimp dumplings. read more

I've been here several times, including just last night, and it's always been a great experience. Their pork buns are just perfect and the beef curry has incredible flavour. Last night we went with two friends from Toronto who were thoroughly impressed. Everyone had a different favourite plate: the crispy pork dumplings, the steamed shrimp dumplings with a lovely, crunch from water chestnuts, and super fresh tasting tuna tartare. The deep fried ice cream is really good too. And the wait never seems to be quite as long as at El Camino next door. read more

This is a great restaurant; innovative menu, drinks are fantastic and the service is excellent! If you like Asian fusion this place is awesome! I love the spicy alternatives. The only reason I gave 4 stars is everything is way too salty but the fried cauliflower dish. It tastes like has no salt. We ordered many things and they were mostly good, or good for my friends taste. Food is generally good but as I said, too salty that it kills the other aromas, flavours. The cocktail I got was sake sour and I loved it. It's a little loud place but yeah, still good read more

3.5/5 Alright been at Datsun twice, and had mixed experiences so I stand by my current rating until a third experience tilts my opinion to a definitive stand. I understand that they are still experimenting and changing up menus as they receive feedback, so you know, take what I write with a grain of salt. First time we came during the Christmas holidays, and unlike other reviews, we found no lineups since we got there at 5:30PM (half-hour after they opened). Around 6PM, most of the tables had been filled, so I advise coming before then if you don't want to wait for a table. Atmosphere-wise, Datsun's pretty hip: bar's on one side, open kitchen on the other. There is an area for group seating near the back, with a lightbulb-made cloud hanging over it. An arcade game also sits beside it in the back. For food, we had the crispy chicken in steamed bun, DIY crispy cod lettuce wrap (now fish in lettuce wrap), Shio ramen (as an entree for me) and the crispy chicken ramen (entree for my partner). The crispy chicken on steamed bun was well-seasoned; and we found the cod very similar to the fish tacos in next-door sister restaurant, El Camino (which means they are de facto delicious). The buns they use have the same sweetness and consistency as a typical bao, but folded in half and presented like a taco. Nothing wrong with that. That first visit, the DIY cod was probably our favourite dish, because though messy, the sauce that it came with was delicious. No seriously, it was great. Now, we waited a lot longer for the ramens than we did everything else. When it did come out, we got the first two bowls (so we felt pretty special). Unfortunately, though, they tasted terrible. Bitter broth, with what we suspect might have been a case of soy bean paste cooked too long. Totally ruined the flavour. Could have been an honest mistake, but that was the absolute first time I had difficulty finishing a bowl of ramen (this has never ever happened in the past). A real shame, I think, because at a premium price, it shouldn't have tasted less than perfect. Suffice to say that we left Datsun pretty disappointed that night. The second time we went, a friend had wanted to go for a going-away shindig. We were seated by the big table in the back; again with no wait, since we were there before 6PM. This time we ordered the seafood curry, shrimp burgers, pork belly steamed buns and another plate of the fish in lettuce wrap (to share for two). This time, we enjoyed most of the food without too much complaint; I actually thought the green curry was amazing, and the shrimp burgers were really tasty as well. Unfortunately, the DIY fish wraps that we enjoyed so much previously were presented a bit differently this time (and not the same sauce!). It didn't quite taste the same. The pork belly buns were good, but we probably wouldn't order it again. Certainly a much better experience the second time. We had the same waiter both times and he was super attentive. Datsun certainly doesn't suffer from bad service. Having said all that, I think the ramen was a sore experience that is a pretty big driver for my rating above. Does it preclude another visit to Datsun? Heck no. My partner and I are actually hoping that our third visit will be phenomenal so that I can then write an updated review admitting that the ramen mixup was just a one time thing and that miraculously, the sauce in the DIY fish in lettuce wrap is back... Trust me, I look forward to being corrected! read more

Arguably one of the best ramen places in town. The tonkotsu broth with the black garlic oil is to die for. The seared pork cheek and tender pork shoulder complemented the rich broth beautifully. I've had it here with pork belly instead of pork cheek once before and I'd say the latter is the better choice, since the fattiness of the pork belly is overwhelming with the broth. But to each their own. My friend and I also shared beef cheek steamed buns and a crispy haddock lettuce wrap. The steamed bun was very good, although it really just tasted like Asian-inspired pulled pork. Out of the two, I would definitely recommend the lettuce wrap because of its freshness of flavour. The crispy haddock remained crispy despite being wrapped in a (slightly) wet wrap and the ginger-coleslaw cut the greasiness of the fried fish. We finished the night with their sesame-encrusted fried coconut ice-cream. Although the caramel sauce was a little too sweet and the coconut taste of the ice-cream was hidden under everything, it was still a lovely end to our meal. I especially enjoyed the pieces of candied ginger on the side that, not only added to the presentation of the dish, but was a nice palate cleanser. The ambience was very mod and you can easily imagine it to be a very social space if it weren't the middle of winter. Situated in the heart of downtown, it attracts the city's university students and young professionals. Furthermore, the service was very easy-going, courteous, and quick - just as it should be :) Overall, an excellent experience! read more

Giving them a 4 star but only because I could only get take out and that was cash only. The food, OMG. Beef cheek buns - great combination of soft succulent pulled beef with a sweet tangy sauce and add in crunch of peanut. Dan Dan noodles was not what I expected but still great. I was expecting more broth but it's served as a soggy mess. BUT it's an amazing soggy mess. Pork goodness at it's messiest. Need to try a sit down here. So many buns. Do little time. read more

Finally made it to Datsun and was sorry that it took so long. If you love El Camino the vibe is familiar without being to similar. I could definitely eat at one the day after I ate at the other. The staff was super attentive, very friendly and the space is much brighter than El Camino which makes it more welcoming to the uninitiated. We were eating early and all had work to do that evening so no one drank but from what I saw the drinks menu was ample and had some interesting choices. As far as the food goes the menu is smallish but with enough variety to satisfy everyone. We ordered 7 different small plates between three of us and enjoyed every single one of them. Universal favourites were the beef cheek bun and the dan dan noodles. With both pork bun and mango salad in close second for me. Personally I could have done without the dumplings, but both my wife and her brother liked them so I'm assuming its a matter of personal preference. Will definitely be back and it seems like a fun place to come for drinks and have some late night snacks, although I could see it getting pricey as you might be inclined to keep trying more and more dishes. read more

I went to this restaurant with a friend on a Wednesday night. I was surprise to see it packed but once we had our food I understood why. We ordered the eggplant dish and tuna sashimi. For a place to be called a "noodle bar" they really don't do noodles well. The broth of the ramen was very bland and only tasted of pork and salt, lacking the depth expected of ramen broth. The steam buns were decent but the pork belly was lacking spice/flavour. The braised beef Panang curry is delicious and filling. The cocktails were fun and yummy. read more

El camino is one of my favorite restaurants in Ottawa, when datsun opened I couldn't wait to try it. We've gone to Datsun twice now. The first time we went we tried several dishes including the pork belly steam buns (bf's favorite), the green papaya salad, the dandan noodle with minced pork and the braised beef penang curry. The steam buns were great and we would definitely recommend them, we enjoyed the papaya salad so we were excited for the next two dishes. Unfortunately the dandan noodles weren't as good as I expected and the curry we ended sending back. It just tasted spicy and the beef was chewy and lacked flavor. Our server was great and ended up not charging us for the curry. I want to go back to datsun and give them another chance but I'm hesitant given the dishes are expensive and I was so disappointed. I hope datsun has improved their dandan and curry dish. We got take out recently and ordered the crispy chicken steam bun with ranch sauce and that is my new favorite and go-to dish. I might even prefer them over el camino tacos. The chicken is cripsy and the bun is soft and delicious. All this to say I will give them another chance and I hope all their dishes are as amazing at the crispy chicken buns! read more

The food is tasty, but as other reviewers have said, overpriced for what it is. We tried the fried chicken bao, pork dandan noodles, and pork dumplings. For nearly $60 with tax and tip, the portions were quite small. The fried chicken was nice and crispy, but not particularly flavorful. The pork dandan noodles were a highlight for me, but the portion size was crazy small for $16. The dumpling filling was super dry and the flavor was slightly off. All in all, it was an okay meal, but we won't be returning given the price. read more

Only reason for 4 stars is how loud it gets past 7pm. The food and drinks here are amazing! It sits in my top 5 Ottawa restaurants. Have the chicken wings, papaya salad, pork curry, and everything else. The thing I liked the least, but which are apparently one of the most popular dishes are the mini chicken "sandwiches" which have this weird plastic puffy dough. Have it for the experience, LOL. After trying on several occasions to discover the infamous steamed buns of Datsun (always full and I refused to wait for a long time outside), I finally scored a quiet night! All the food we sampled that evening was simply delicious! We were 2 and what we shared below was enough to make us uncomfortably full: you know it's pretty darn good when you keep eating after the belly says enough!!! Pork Belly Steamed Bun Crispy Chicken Steamed Bun Beef Cheek Steamed Bun Pork and Chives Dumplings Fried Cauliflower with curry sauce So the jury is divided on what was the best dish. We both agreed that the fried cauliflower was the ultimate star of the meal and what cravings are made of. However, my dinner partner chose the pork belly bun as his fave while I thought the crispy chicken was like nothing I've ever had. Seriously good: the crunch and the sauce, omg that was a symphony for my taste buds. So this proves once again that personal taste is very individual. Why not a 5 start rating then? Where the restaurant loses that extra star: it was freezing in there and I didn't find the seats and table arrangement comfortable at all. The acoustics are terrible... Forget a quiet conversation during a tête-à-tête. The decor is very hip looking but not the kind of place you want to enjoy a leisurely meal. And on that topic, the service was actually too FAST. Yup, we ordered these items to share, thinking they would come at a normal eating pace (there was only about 7 tables in the entire restaurant). Everything pretty much arrived at the same time. It was sort of a weird combo: food that is a notch above many restaurants served almost fast food style. Note to self: order 1 or 2 items at a time, keep the menu and then order again... Because in the end, the food is well worth going again and again. next for me: diving into the noodle bowls, with a side of steamed buns and fried cauliflower of course! read more

If you are paying 10 to 15 bucks for a bowl of starch, you expect to get really good and tasty food... but unfortunately, the food sucks here.. The pork bun is really gamy.. The ramen is too salty and lukewarm.. The dan dan noodle has nothing to do with the real dan dan noodle.. trust me, I've spent a ton of time in Asia.. In general, the wait staffs here are the only saving grace.... food is not only bad but also slow.. and you can see they are really stuck in the situation and you feel bad for them.. My recommendation is to wait for a bit for them to get their house in order before giving them a try.. Seriously.... I feel stupid after paying over 60 bucks for such bad food... urgh read more

Great atmosphere! We came maybe 15 minutes after they opened on a Tuesday and half the restaurant was already filled. Our waiter was extremely friendly and helpful when it came to suggestions, shame I couldn't get his name because he really made my dining experience exceptional. Most of the people dining were young groups of professionals so it is a trendier place. Dimly lit and not a lot of arm room, I wouldn't expect many families to come here. The two of us shared the spicy beef brisket baos (beef was somewhat hard to pull apart), the fried chicken baos (amazing and super crunchy) and the seafood laksa ramen with coconut milk (which in my opinion is one of the best laksa broths I've ever had, the coconut milk works really well with the soup). We will definitely be coming back! read more

This has quickly stolen my heart as my new favourite restaurant! I have been hearing the rumours about their pork buns and had been eager to try it out! A few weeks ago, a group of my very best friends were coming in from Toronto. Anyways, so we heard rumours of 2 hour waits but luckily got there shorty after doors opened and snuck our way under the super cool light fixture and were greeted by the most amazing waitress. She did an amazing job setting the tone for the entire meal, from drink recommendations to just being super friendly and on point with clearing the table and checking in on how we were doing. Like my friends and I were doing tapas style for everything, and when we ordered two different noodles and were okay with just our bowls, she swept in and was like "no way, I'm getting you guys new bowls". You could tell they cared about your dining experience. The decor and ambiance is similar to that of El Camino's. That being said, there's a distinct white vs. black theme between the two sister restaurants, and the walls are less crowded at Datsun, which was nice. Also, compared to El Camino's, it's not AS loud, so definitely a decent place for a date night! Alright, as for food! My friends and I ordered a LOT of food. (No regrets) We had the tuna tartare, which was PHENOMENAL, from the freshness to the huge kick of the spicey sauce (wasabi+mayo?), definitely some of the best I've had. Of course, we also ordered the pork buns (we might've ordered two rounds... Oops!). The pork buns definitely blew every other pork bun I've had (in North America) out of the water!!!! Thick slabs of pork belly, well marinated and not overpowered by anything else. Drooling just thinking about it. Their shrimp burger was also life changing. Strong flavour profile, and because they were more slider-esque, it didn't feel like it was too much. Their ramen was also very solid (we ordered the tonkatsu and crispy chicken ones). Noodles were great, not overcooked and classic toppings with the egg and bamboo shoots, but the broth for the tonkatsu was darker than I'm used to... I'm not sure how else to explain it, but definitely can tell the broth has been well seasoned and done right. Last thing I will probably extensively touch on is their spicy crispy chicken wings: We were wondering why every other table was ordering it so we thought we would try as well. It was just done SO right. In the day and age of wing nights, I've unfortunately experienced so many drenched and soggy wings when I've asked for crispy, or overly fried wings to the point where the inside is all dry, Datsun restored my faith in chicken wings that night. It was crispy even after being tossed in the sauce, but not over the top. And the chili sauce was amazing - it stays on your tongue long after but again, without forgoing flavour, which I love. Other honourable mentions: the pork dumplings, the curry, and their papaya salad (think El Camino's huge stack salad). Dumplings were okay, pretty solid and appreciatively not store-bought. The curry was a little runnier but the flavour was there, and the scalloped were delicious. That being said, pretty standard as far as curries go. I just had such an overall positive experience here, and made my Toronto friends (who are just some of the pickiest eaters) actually jealous that we had such a cool spot here (with "unforgettable pork buns", their words!) in Ottawa speaks volumes, I think. Already dreaming of my next visit! read more

Definitely hipster vibe, but hey these hipsters know their flavours and do not disappoint! I find the layout of this restaurant quite pleasing - there are tables quite close together but it didn't feel claustrophobic or that there was a lack of privacy. Staff are friendly, and some more attentive than others. Our server was great though, he observed our needs and knew his menu which you'd think is a prerequisite of running a restaurant but not necessarily carried out everywhere. We ordered ramen - they were well worth it. It was probably the best tan tan (spicy) ramen I've ever had. The broth was thick and had a depth to it. I loved the shiitake mushrooms and serve of chilli oil/sambal on the side to adjust the heat. The chicken was also better than expected - they had taken the time to char grill the Chicken then place it in the ramen! Asian fusion is often a cop-out for a chef to try out new ideas without committing to a cuisine, but Datsun has definitely done this genre of cooking justice - I felt like I was in Japan ramen, but at the same time I was enjoying the rich melting pot ambience in Canada. read more

We stumbled upon Datsun as El Camino next door, which we originally planned on going to was an hour and half wait. We were pleasantly surprised by the change in plans. The services were great. Food was great. Reasons for not giving this place five stars: Everything has sesames. I love sesames, but they don't have to be in every dish. Though sesames were great in all of our four dishes. I may be too picky. Every dish seems salty. .HOWEVER, the food does not make me thirsty- which is NOT a sign of using MSG. I prefer lighter on salt on my food, because I prefer the original taste of ingredients. Price- a little bit expensive. Overall this place is great. I still would com back because of their great services. read more

I was there the first week they opened. I ordered the penang curry. My friend ordered the same thing. We are both south east Asian background. The curry tasted more like Thai flavour than Malaysian penang curry. Don't get me wrong, it tasted good but it didn't taste anything like a penang curry. It had coconut sauce and braised beef. The beef idea was good. I found the rice that came along to be extremely dry. It was either very old rice or cooked by someone who has never cooked a rice in their entire life. I will give it another try but definitely have to try something different. I am little hesitant to go back since the person who was serving was extremely rude to us. We have been to many restaurants like el Camino, supply and demand, black cat, etc one of the best part of the Restaurent is the service. I sure didn't feel like I got that with this Restaurant. read more

More like 3.5! No matter that the food didn't really live up to my expectations, especially considering the hype, the service here brought this rating up. Very attentive servers and cooks at this restaurant, and they genuinely look like they enjoy working there. Even with the hipster feel, no one was standoffish or looked bored. Such a pleasure to witness when you're there to have a good time too! Now the food. The pork belly steamed bun was out of this world. Soft so that the fat melts in your mouth and is easy to chew. The chicken steamed bun got rave reviews on Yelp and elsewhere but I really don't get it. The batter is too thick for the bun, and it needed something fresh like pickles because it was much too dry and weighed down. I wouldn't order that again. We also got the chicken wings, which were expertly cooked and spicy, as advertised. The tuna tartare was okay, the tuna being fresh and tender, although the whole dish was on the salty side. I would explain it as a deconstructed Philadelphia role but with tuna. It's playful and alright, I've just had better and it doesn't wow. We finished off with the tonkotsu ramen, a new favourite at Sansotei Ramen. I hate to compare but I can't not. After having the deep rich broth at Sansotei, the one here fell flat. The broth is thinner and more watery, and the noodles felt slimy. All in all, we really enjoyed our night. Our party agreed that we're excited to come back but would order all different things, minus that pork belly bun, which I'm still thinking about! read more
