This was our last time visiting that place. The owner was extremely rude. The service was not organized. We were group of 9. The appetizers were serves to us within 5 minutes apart, instead at the same time. Some of us already had main menu, and the others were waiting for appetizer. Two of them had to finally cancel. One of the guest asked for beer and waited 15 minutes. When the issue was raised to the owner, who burst into shouting. He was coming back and forth to our table and yelling. At one point he come by our table holding a tiny baby in diapers! and still yelling. His excuse of anger was that the service people are young and learning. He asked us to leave the to restaurant instead of apologizing. Such an ugly evening ! He ruin my birthday. read more

Came to Sweet Basil with a group and it was great! We were greeted promptly at the door! The waiter asked us to wait while they prepared a place for us. Once seated, we ordered appetizers (fried dumplings & pad tofu) and our main course. The waiter was really good, because he waited 15 minutes after entering our appetizer before he entered our dinner. For my dinner, I ordered Pad Kee Maow (mild) with shrimp and chicken with a glass of wine. DISCLAIMER: If you're not a fan of spicy food, order MILD. MEDIUM is STILL really SPICY! After having watched a late afternoon matinee at Cineplex, it was around 6:30 pm and I was hungry. I looked at the Montana's nearby, but that didn't scream must-go for me. I whipped out my Yelp app on my phone and found this Thai place. It was two minutes away by car. Sweet! The place is even called Sweet Basil... haha! I parked in a plaza steps away from the restaurant. The restaurant has parking, but it was pretty busy when I got there. The restaurant's interior is gorgeous. The decor makes you feel like you are in Thailand. I was promptly greeted and was seated at a table towards the back of the restaurant. There were customers dining, but it wasn't terribly noisy or overly crowded. The menu covers are wooden. It felt cool in my hands. I ordered dish number 30 off the menu, which was gaeng garee kai (light curry with chicken, spices, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, and coconut milk). Rice does not come with this dish. I was bold and ordered the sticky rice for an extra $3. After all, it was my birthday, so I could order whatever I felt like. Moments later, my food had arrived. I was excited! My curry was delicious. The chicken was tender. The spices were mild, but fragrant. The veggies were so good. I loved it. The sticky rice was indeed sticky. However, when I poured the curry sauce over the rice, I didn't really notice the stickiness as much. I normally do regular rice, so I'm glad that I changed things up. I went with iced water on a hot summer evening. It was refilled regularly, which I appreciated. I went to the counter to pay for my meal. Staff are hospitable and great. I paid using a credit card, thanked them, and left. If you want authentic, yummy Thai food in a relaxed setting, this is your restaurant. I've been to Sweet Basil before - maybe 5 years ago. I remembered it being good but nothing earth shattering. I had some customers in town for Lunch and they decided on Thai. The restaurant is nice inside, in spite of its being in a blah area down Bank St. The combination platter was lovely and very filling for $17. The ambience and decoration of Sweet Basil Restaurant is really nice... with a lot of Authentic Thai decoration... I would have to say that authenticity ended here.... Dropped by for lunch. Yes they do have lunch specials. The Tom Yum Soup we order was really oily... yes I can see them floating in the dim dark lighting. And it is basically some slice mushrooms floating in a clear broth... The Pad Thai though tasted ok.. but is the first one that we ate that is spicy. I ordered this especially since it is not spicy... but anyway. The portion is small for $10.95. The Dried Red Curry chicken over noodle is ok. Maybe choices for Thai food up in Ottawa is limited and for sure my Sweet Basil experience was disappointing. They accepts all credit cards. read more

Food is flavourful. Takeout was no exception. The price is a bit high and portions are a bit small. An alternative that we like is Thai Lanna, which is probably where we will continue to go for Thai takeout. read more

The fried dumplings paired extremely well with the dipping sauce. Had the pad kee mao for my entree and it was great. If you don't like spicy please ask for it mild because the chef is heavy handed with the spices (defaults to medium). The green tea ice cream is also very good. read more

Yum Mamuang (spicy mango salad w shrimp) is pricey at $15 but it is a large serving. First time we tried it was not very spicy but the second time was spot on with increased heat. Mangoes were just right, not hard or mushy. Panaeng Tofu is delicious, med red curry heat with a little sweet. Jan Ron Talay (sizzling basil seafood) the scallops, shrimp and squid are cook perfectly. If you are craving some heat ask for a side of hot sauce for $1. Scallop Ginger Curry has lots of scallops, well cooked and wonderfully heavy on ginger strips. Service and ambiance was a thumbs up. read more

I have been to Thailand four times and, eventually, grew less timid about the local food and soon began eating the real deal from street vendors. In fact, during one trip to Northern Thailand, up near the Myanmar border, my wife and I stayed at a hill tribe village and the locals taught us how to cook some basic recipes. Back in Canada, the choices for Asian food were slim - mostly that Americanized Chinese food or sushi...at least until we discovered Sweet Basil. Talk about authentic Thai - the spices, the ambiance, the prices....well, NOT the prices. I paid next to nothing in Thailand for food (and everything else!) but Sweet Basil is a bit pricey. This was one of the many places we'd order from at my work and when the food came, the room would get very quiet except the grunts and chews of very satisfied eaters. Their take-out is especially easy since they have their entire menu online (link at top). They have a pretty great selection of appetizers, noodle/rice dishes, curry and various meat dishes. They don't have many vegetarian options, but what they have is delicious. The location isn't central, but it's still easy to get to. The prices are reasonable, considering the quality of the food. You'll probably spend about $25 (everything included) per person. The owners also have a few other Thai restaurants in Ottawa. I've only been to Som Tum and it's great. read more

I went here for lunch to celebrate a colleague's promotion. We had a reservation for about 15 people. The decor is beautiful and the place is very nicely done. The service was attentive and polite. But the experience ended there. The food was plated beautifully but the flavours were missing. My pad thai had no tang to it, had way too much garnish and the portions were really small in comparison to what I paid for. I am not sure if my expectations were too high based on the hype and reviews but I am really disappointed by the food. This is our go to date night restaurant of choice. The food is always fantastic, fresh and quick to serve. We spent time in Asia a few years back (where my husband purposed) and this place takes us away to our fondest memories of amazing meals and romance. I find the prices fair and worth every penny. I had the pad thai and the mango salad, and both were pretty good, though I wouldn't say it was the best I've ever had, either. Solid, all around. Service was a little slow, and I had to approach the servers twice. Clean bathrooms, however you have to go down a steep flight of stairs to get there, so be aware of this when it comes to accessibility issues. Great Zen-like atmosphere in a quiet, adult focused restaurant. Went on a Saturday night, long weekend, so it wasn't crowded. There was only one server but she was as efficient as a flashlight with fresh Energizer batteries. My wife and I shared beef satay, chicken panang and stir fried seafood with veggies. We asked that it be served spicy hot, and it actually had the heat level requested. I've been to scores of Thai restaurants in Ottawa and New York City, but this was the best panang I ever had. The seafood and veggies were also fantastic and I washed it down with a cold Singh Ha beer, which I believe I misspelled. My wife had an ice tea. The bill, pre-tip, totalled around $60. Delicious and Authentic is definitely true here. Add to that the imported from Thailand authentic furniture and decor, these ladies went all out. Its a very romatic atmosphere, and the food is yumm! Om nom nom nom ... If you can take spicy, they do awesome sweet spicy whole fish (pomfret) and everything else is great. I've not been able to ding them on anything yet.
