Portions were delicious and filling though Laab Kai Whitcomb wasn't my taste. Though it may be a but sweet for some, the Thai Iced Tea was not what I was expecting (in a good way). I'm so mad I didn't know this place did vegan pad thai's earlier. I went in for lunch and got myself the vegan pad thai (no eggs, fish sauce) and it was delish! Its been soo long since I've had a pad thai and this place def hit the spot. Once I actually placed my order the meal came super quickly and everything tasted great, I find most places use so many pieces of tofu or mung beans to add volume to the dish but here it was nicely balanced. All the wait staff was great and the service to fill your water or to take your place away was extremely quick. My only issue was the washroom light was broken so I had to use my phone to use it lol. Service was great, and it was clearly a popular choice in the byward market area. The reason for the three stars, rather than 4, was because my dish really missed the mark: khao soi. It just tasted off and the flavor was not right. Otherwise, the mango salad and chicken pineapple fried rice were very good. I also found it a little pricey, especially the drinks. Service was great. Although, we did not have a reservation and it was incredibly busy the hostess offered us a table outside and we sat within 5 minutes. Highly recommend reservations to make sure you get to taste their delicious food. We had the vegetable soup, Green Curry, and the Pad Khee Mao and it all had amazing flavors and was so good! Exceptional. This is truly the most flavourful thai I have had outside of Thailand. Deep, rich flavour. The plating and even serving of the drinks was tastefully done. We had the Har Mok (salmon in coconut), thai iced tea, fruit punch mock tail, Tom yum gai soup, chicken wings, and " general Thai chicken". All delicious! We randomly chose this place because it was a bit further away from the hustle and bustle. We did not regret. This place is just so good with fresh ingredients and their brilliant way of bringing together texture , colour and diversity of sweet , sour , savoury etc. Can't say enough about the Har Mok. Very delicious and affordable Thai food in downtown area. My colleague and I ordered lunch combo A and combo B, which comes with tea, soup, fried vegetable roll and main dish. Considering that we arrived 45 mins before closing, we had plenty seating options and opted to seat in a 4-person table. It definitely gave a Thai restaurant atmosphere without being too cliche and overload with southeast Asia decorations. Dish was quickly served after ordering. This is probably one of the best if not the best Thai place in ottawa, and my friend who just spent a month in Thailand says it's the best Thai food outside of Thailand so that has got to be saying something! Probably the best Thai cuisine in town so far, in my opinion. Sitting at patio is very relaxing. Having a little drinks in such nice decorations. The owner put up a lot of effort on how the dishes and drinks look like. My favorite dish is the Coconut salmon! Sometimes I found the taste and the tableware, especially the way they used to decorate the wine changes once a while. A quite pleasurable experience. To start, we ordered a Hot Toddy with rum that was amazing. The hot tea-like beverage boasted citrus flavours from lemons and oranges. It warmed the throat and tummy a little bit extra with the added rum. Great drink for a colder day. The tom yum soup was good and seemed to be made traditionally. The fish sauce flavour was a bit too strong for my liking. The grapow was scrumptious, the crushed chillies blended the dish together seamlessly. Khao Thai was an absolute pleasure. The salmon in a coconut was a generous proportion and exceptionally tasteful; you could even eat the inside of the coconut which was seasoned by the red curry. Food Was Excellent .. better than most of the food that I've had in Bangkok , Pattaya, Hua Yin, etc ... The Restaraunt was warm with vibrant candle lights and everything about the decor just matched as if you were having a fine dinner or Lunch in Bangkok. This place is a great change of pace ... where there's your basic Pizza , burgers, Shwarma, Vietnamese Pho., etc...... all over, and pretty average. I happen to walk by this restaurant in Ottawa (located in ByWard market) and decided to give it a try. I went in on Monday evening around 8:30 PM. It wasn't too crowded. The ambience is quite cozy and there are plenty of seating options. Service was pretty quick. They seems to have a good collection of spirits, cocktails and wine. I ordered an Old Fashion (with Canadian Rye whiskey) and it was served under a smoke jar which lended a sweetish smoky flavor to the drink. I decided to order a curry dish and requested Geang Panang with chicken and medium hot level. The food was served within 5-7 mins after placing the order. The curry had such a great balance of spice, salt and sugar with a fine balance between the chicken and herbs. The rice needs to be ordered separately. I had steamed white rice and the portion size were adequate for a single person. The price is reasonable - not too expensive. The staff was very courteous and attentive. This restaurant will definitely take a position in the list of my top 25 Thai restaurant. If I get a chance, I will certainly visit again. read more

Service: the waiter was so nice and attentive, really trying to make sure we chose the best meal for ourselves, no problem there. Food: the portions really varied depending on what you order, but the prices weren't quite proportional to the meal. For example, my friend got a huge plate of rice and general tao chicken for the same price as my measly papaya salad. And my papaya salad was spicy but didn't taste like much otherwise. My friend's chicken was good though, but general tao isn't hard to make either. I would want to come try a pad thai dish next time. Decor: small cosy and elegant atmosphere. read more

The food at Khao Thai is very comparable to what you would get at a Thai Express: not exactly fresh (we spotted a few frozen ingredients), overly sweet, clearly westernized, and served in a heap as if someone had dumped the content of a take-out container on your plate after it was microwaved. SO GOOD! we ordered pad thai, general thai chicken, some por pia pak (spring rolls) and sticky rice. everything was beyond delicious, super fresh, and ginormous portions! also I would like to note that most of the packaging was either plastic free or reusable containers, which I extra loved. the pad thai was perfectly saucy, topped with peanuts, bean sprouts and a lime wedge, there was lots of chicken and tofu throughout. the spring rolls were crispy and the dipping sauce was delightful. the general thai chicken was seriously enough to feed multiple people, and came with fresh steamed veggies and fluffy rice, again perfectly saucy, sweet and spicy in just the right way. definitely enjoyed the leftovers for breakfast the next morning! absolutely will be ordering again (can't wait!) read more

The food is great but as soon as you finish your plate they ask you to leave. I was meeting a friend there and within 45 minutes we were asked to leave. Our bill was $120 plus 20% tip. We expect to be there at least an hour to eat and chat. We were asked to order right when we sat down and when we left there was no one waiting to be seated. I won't be going back here. It is a glorified takeout restaurant. I am giving them 4 stars for the taste and quality of their food but will never go into the restaurant again. read more

It's super close to the Byward Market district - a great place to explore in and of itself. Every time I go to Ottawa, I consider it my duty to pay Khao Thai a visit in order to have their pad thai. It's better than any pad thai that I've tried in Toronto. The one time I went (with about 10 other ppl), they were extremely skimpy on the protein (meat or seafood).
