I dropped by Crazy Pho You for a late lunch and it was great. Admittedly, I was drawn to the restaurant because of its cool punny name - yes I love puns, lol, but the food turned out to be delicious too. I got the beef and spring rolls vermicelli ($12.95) with no bean sprouts and no fish sauce. They were kind enough to offer me an alternative sauce "brown sauce" or "peanut sauce." I went with the latter and it was a little too strong in hoisin flavour for me, but I found it good in small amounts. Honestly, the beef was so well marinated and flavoured that I didn't even really need any sauce. The portion size was great. I was stuffed silly after finishing the bowl. If I wasn't such a glutton, it could have eaten half and easily saved the rest for dinner. The beef was sliced really thin, but I got a good amount. It was lean with no fatty nor gristely bits, yet it wasn't tough nor chewy, so I was a very happy camper. I loved the marinade, it was a bit sweet and very umami. Lots of flavour. The pork spring rolls were hot and crispy. They were filled with pork, vegetables and vermicelli. They were good, despite being made with the wheat wrapper and not the more traditional rice paper wrapper that we all know I love oh so much ;) The vermicelli was hot and the perfect consistency. The vegetables were shredded lettuce, carrots and cucumbers. I think the carrots were pickled. They also sprinkled on a lot of crushed peanuts and some fried scallions, so yummy, I love fried scallions. I arrived at about 2:45pm on a weekday. The guy who served me was really nice. I think he ended his shift at 3pm though, because shortly after dropping off my food, he put on his coat and headed out the door. I didn't even realize this until as he was leaving he yelled out to me "thanks, have a great day!" He surprised me, and my mouth was full but I managed to squeeze out a "thanks!" I wish he had told me he was leaving because I would have gladly settled the bill so he would get his tip. I'm hoping he got his tip regardless. After he left, I was kind of left to my own devices as despite having people who appeared to work there enter and exit, no one seemed to take on the role of server. I didn't mind this too much because once I get my food, as long as it's my correct order, I am a very low maintenance customer. Towards the end of my meal, a man who turned out to be either the owner or the owner's son appeared behind the counter, so I asked him for some more water. We chatted a bit and he told me that the restaurant has been around for 3 years. When it first opened it was "a partnership" but for the last year or so it's been "just him and his family." So it's definitely a family run business. I told him I really enjoyed my meal, and he thanked me for supporting their business. I would definitely come back. I'd like to try out their other dishes. Parking is a bit of a pain in this area, as it's street parking only, and there are a lot of restrictions, but if you don't mind walking a bit, you can find parking a little further out. read more

Crazy Pho You - Vietnamese Near Me - Ottawa, Ontario

You know a place is new when nothing comes up for reviews on Yelp, Trip Advisor or anything else. I saw this puntastic restaurant on Bronson when going to meet my sister, and thought it would be good to try out since mine and wife's apartment is just a couple minutes walk away. It's always good to have a nearby restaurant when you just don't feel like cooking! With Ottawa's winter making a painful resurgence, we hustled our way to this small restaurant. Seating about 30 at a mix of tables, it's a good size for a neighbourhood joint. A fresh coat of a warm yellow paint, east Asian paintings, and a cool water fixture tower give it a cozy feeling that's a step above many of the more...well-worn...competition on Somerset.  They have a decently sized menu, with several appetizers, pho and other noodle soup options, as well as bun and other non-soup entrees. Sipping on the jasmine tea provided free of charge, my wife settled on the BBQ pork bun, while I indulged on a medium order of the brisket and rare beef pho, as well as an order of their crazy fried chicken. A few other tables trickled in while we waited, which was nice to see for a brand new place that doesn't have the star power of the latest trends in modern cuisine or a big name chef. The pho had a reasonable amount of meat, with both cuts being nice and tender. While the broth wasn't the best I've ever had, it was fine, and benefitted from squirts of hoisin and sriracha, and pinches of the provided mint and sprouts. The plentiful noodles were slurped up, and I shared the warming soup with my wife as well. I didn't know what to expect with the chicken, but what I got was an unbattered thigh and drumstick that appeared to be fried and possibly finished on a grill, given the charring around the edges. While still moist and tender, the seasoning was disappointingly bland, though the provided cup of sauce, with a sweet and garlicky flavour, brought things up a bit. I should have inquired a bit more into the veggie options that I was given, as the spread of carrots, broccoli, cucumber and tomato that I got were fine, although also a bit boring. Bland veggies are for my parent's type of restaurants, and something more befitting the diverse flavours of Vietnam would have been much preferred.  My wife's bun got the thumbs up from her, although the pork was noticeably sparse. Having both come in with an appetite, we were glad for the volume of food that we got as one entree alone wouldn't have filled the void; definitely tack on some appies if you go. We may not have been blown out of the water, but there's much to be said for a new restaurant finding its legs. Crazy Pho You is still putting out solid food at good prices in an area that is in desperate need of more food options. Even as things are, they're a step above McD's and Cantina Sur, so seeing them develop further will surely cement them in our resto repertoire. read more

We spent a day exploring Ottawa downtown by bike and worked up a fierce appetite that called for a hearty soup. We looked up "best pho Ottawa" and rode quickly over to Crazy Pho You. Ken, Andrew and David were friendly and accommodating, and the surroundings were attractive, homey and spotless so we chose to eat indoors (socially distanced of course). My beef pho starter was very tasty and filling but the pork banh mi followup was, can i say, spectacular? The pork belly was so lovingly prepared and tender it was crazy. I wished I had a bigger mouth to fit more in at a time and a smaller one to take more bites. That meal (with some Texas Tea on the side) was easily one of the best I've had in Ottawa. I'll be back next time I'm visiting from Toronto. If you're lucky to be living in Ottawa, don't miss it! read more

Biking by around supper time, my husband and I were craving some good Asian food and decided to give ''Crazy Pho You'' a try. What a delightful surprise! The friendly owners kindly helped us secure our bikes and offered us hot tea while we perused the menu. I had the tofu pad thai and hubby had the honey pork with rice, with additional seasonal veggies. Very generous portions and delicious food! I had the option of how ''saucy'' and how spicy I wanted the pad thai. The pork was beautifully marinated and grilled, accompanied by a nice selection of crispy fresh & steamed veggies and heaps of rice. The servers were lovely, warm & helpful. This pink-lit, friendly family-run gem of a place on Bronson Street is aptly-named...a cosy place with a big heart. I'm hooked! :) read more

My husband and I were craving for Vietnamese food while on vacation at the capital city (Ottawa). We googled the 10 best Vietnamese restaurants located close to Bank Street. This cute restaurant caught our fancy because the reviews were great, so we decided to look for it. What a pleasant surprise! It was at 4pm and we had the restaurant all to ourselves. The staff was so friendly, a young man full of enthusiasm to please us. The place is cute and clean. We ordered Seafood Pad Thai and Vermicelli with 3 meat combination. Wow! Great food indeed and very flavourful. The portions: seafood and meat were generous, a great surprise...so generous that we couldn't finish them. This was the first time we had been served so much at a Vietnamese restaurant. We are definitely going back there before we leave for home. Highly recommended! You won't be disappointed. Only drawback is the street parking but who cares the food is great! read more
