So excited--The tea tastes like lemon grass. Warming our hands, this chilly day!
GoVeg R.

My second visit--I will come here again and again. The food is SO good. Even though it's Saturday night, the service is fast. Ambience is busy and louder this time, compared to last time when I was here for lunch. Still it's very pleasant and everyone's happy, because the food is awesome. This time I had panang veg and tofu. The (free) tea is lemon-grassy and very warming, perfect on this winter evening.

T-63 on dinner menu Pad Kee Maow Fried rice noodles w/ chicken, veggies, basil and chilies

I always walk by this place when I stroll through China town, but never checked it out. Today was that day, and the hubby and I decided to come here with the in laws for some Thai to celebrate Mothers Day. We made a reservation, but it really was not needed, the place was maybe half full. We were seated in a booth, but found it a tad snug and moved to a table for four in the middle of the restaurant, much roomier! If you do like people watching, I am sure you would appreciate the booth seat! We started off with some vegetable spring rolls ($6.95 for 3) and they were pretty bomb! I actually wish we ordered more. They were on the smaller size, but the taste was on point as well as the sweet and sour sauce that came with it. For mains the hubby ordered T-63 ($12.95) which was a rice noodle dish, with chicken, vegetables, chilies and basil. You have your choice of spice level. Levels are rated from 1-5 from mild to spicy. He got spice level #3 and thought it was perfect. The owner who was also serving us brought us over the spice jar to our table if we chose to make it spicier which was a nice touch! I ordered T-45 ($12.95), which was a rice noodle dish with tofu, vegetables, and peanuts. I ordered spice level #1, but was almost crying half way through my meal because I could not handle the heat. The sauce was also pretty sweet, which I did not mind. The in laws ordered off the lunch menu, and while it was a couple of dollars cheaper, the portions were significantly smaller. Just a heads up in case you are really hungry!! :) Service was super friendly and the food came out pipping hot and quickly. Ambiance was nice and quiet. I am glad I finally checked this place out, and would come back for the spring rolls and maybe try a new dish out like the vermicelli.

Yellow curry with chicken, $10 lunch special

Came here for lunch while we visited Ottawa. We came as a group of 5 and we got seated within 5mins, but we only got the 4 person table in the middle, because they were quite busy even for Thursday lunch. We ordered yellow and green curry from the lunch menu ($10) and a Large pho to share between 2 people. I noticed that the stuff on the lunch special is couple dollars cheaper than their regular price, so it's pretty worth it to order there. Our food came after around 15mins wait, which is quite slow given that it was lunch time and the type of food we ordered shouldn't take very long to prepare. The curry portions were pretty small, it was basically a small bowl of curry with some rice on the side. The flavour was ok but it was pretty spicy and I didn't feel like there was enough rice for how spicy it was. The pho bowl was quite large, definitely enough noodles for 2 people, but not really enough beef that it felt like the only difference between a smaller size and this was the noodles.

It was such a beautiful day we walked down to Chinatown. I'm so happy we stopped and tried something new. The lunch portion was very generous. I had Kao Pad Bai Gra Praw and ordered 3 stars spicy. There was a bit of kick but next time I think I'll try level 4 or 5, I like to feel the heat! This was a fantastic stop. I can't wait to visit again soon.

Our last lunch before heading back home...we remembered our first time here and the food was delicious and mouth watering. As such, we part of the plan to have lunch before the long ride home! On weekends it's fairly quiet in the restaurant as Ottawa is a city of Government Employees and everyone is off so there's hardly anyone in the city, which was great for us because we didn't have to wait long for service or for food! The first time we came we had the Green Curry with Shrimp, a Pad Thai, Lap and Som Tum (green papaya salad in a spicy and sour ). All of the dishes were made with lots of flavourful spices that keeps you wanting more even when your full to the top of your head. For this trip to Ottawa, my husband and I shared the Bun with pork, chicken and spring roll, Pad Thai (because it was way too good the first time) and the Neur Nam Tok. The Neur Nam Tok taste the same as the Lap but instead of ground beef this was made with sliced beef. Same amount of goodness flavours. Looks like we will need to make another trip back for more!

This place was quite disappointing, especially considering the prime location in Chinatown. I wanted noodles but the server (who I think is the owner) suggested rice. My 2 other friends got noodles: pad thai and pad see ew. The beef in my dish was very dry. It was not tasty at all. I liked how my dish had a lot of vegetables and sauce. I dumped my rice in the dish to soak up everything. It also wasnt very spicy despite the chili pepper warning on the menu. I added some of my own chili since the overall taste was very plain. Both my friends had made the same comment on the taste and also added chili, even though one of my friends hates spicy food. She said that her pad thai had little flavour. Also, we tried the pad thai and it tasted like ketchup which is very disappointing from a place that looks to be more authentic. It was so bad that she only ate half and left the rest. The pad see ew noodles looked the tastiest of the items we ordered, but my friend eating it said that it was just soy sauce noodles. Lastly, my friend who drank the "tea" or hot water that they served us said it tasted like dish soap. I feel like it actually could have been dish soap since it was very lightly yellow in colour but had no tea leaves in the pot. We all just avoided it and asked for water instead. Prices are around $15 or $20 after tax for decent portions of bland food.

Vegetarian Fried Rice

Had lunch with the family on Easter Monday in China Town section in Ottawa. From the outside it seemed to be the cleanest restaurant on the street that we peeked and it turned out to be just that. The two servers that attended were excellent in service and their knowledge of the menu. They started us with some green tea that was flavoured with lemongrass and was one of the best we have ever had. We had Fried Tofu (T3) to start with and was perfect. Fresh, slightly crispy outside and soft inside. We had Plain Noodle Soup (V08) with veg broth, Pad Kee Maow Fried Rice Noodles with mixed veggies (Lunch Menu F), Vegetarian Fried Rice (T65) and Vegetarian Green Curry (T51). The T51 was out of this world. My son does not prefer eggplant and he finished each and everything on his plate. The curry was rich, perfectly flavoured, mildly spiced and went well with the plain rice. The Rice Noodles were good and spiced slightly more but the dish hit its spot. The quantity was a bit on the lower side but it was a lunch dish, but goes to say that we needed more! The fried rice with basil was amazing and flavoured just right with soy sauce. The soup was plain, but that what it was. The large portion was LARGE. The servers when told all of us were vegetarian were quick to point is dishes that had eggs or flavoured with fish sauce. When requested they quickly doubled checked and told it could be made without it. The service, the cleanliness and the food - 5 stars for us. Will go back again and highly recommend. Updated 2016-09-02 Had Deep Fried Tofu, Red Curry Tofu (T43), Vegetarian Pad Thai (T45), Vegetarian Noodle with Basil (T47) and Vegetable Fried Rice (T65) The Pad Thai was good, the noodles perhaps a little more cooked. The taste was perfect. T47 was simply amazing. The basil came through nicely and bit on the spicy side. Really nice dish. The Fried rice was plain and lacked flavour. The Red Curry Tofu was really good. Not too spicy and lots of veggies

Pad Thai, looks far better than it tasted. Ketchup/tomato soup/Spaghettios sauce - gross.
Maria D.

First visit there, will not return. Was in the mood for pad thai and thought I'd give this place a try. Before I even tasted it, I knew it wasn't right - smelled strongly of ketchup. Tasted exactly like Spaghettios sauce. Not a hint of tamarind or garlic. Was so unappetizing that I couldn't finish even half of it, and that's saying a lot for me (I always finish my plate). I knew I should've sent it back, but I was in a hurry to get to an event, and couldn't afford to waste time, so I persevered. There were no chopsticks on the table (like they know their food isn't legit and therefor don't anticipate having many Asian customers?), felt awkward eating pad thai with a fork, which added to the unpleasantness. Usually I would ask for chopsticks, but the food was so discouraging. Never imagined that I'd find a sit-down Thai resto that was LESS authentic than even Thai Express. Dismal. Other than that, the service was casual yet agreeable, and the place looked relatively clean.

Pork, Chicken and Spring Roll Bun

This was our last stop for food while visiting Ottawa. We've been here a few times and love it. They are located in Chinatown as well and is very spacious and comfortable seating. They use a lot of Thai decorations as this is a traditional Thai restaurant. On weekends they are not as busy because most people that eat here are office workers, Ottawa is a quiet city during the weekend as most workers are Government and don't work on the weekends. Service is quick and polite and their food is very authentic. My wife and I ordered a few dishes to share which was very delicious and savoury. We ordered the Bun with pork, chicken, and spring rolls, an order of Pad Thai and the Neur Nam Tok. The Bun which more of a Vietnamese dish but they all eat the same style food since Thailand, Vietnam and Laos are located in the same region. The Bun is a dry style vermicelli noodle dish usually with some shredded lettuce, bean sprouts fresh veggies topped with some sort of grilled meat then you mix it all up with a small bowl of sweetened fish sauce. The meats were very flavourful marinated with lemongrass. The Pad Thai is made with stir frying rice noodles with some bean sprouts and veggies along with chicken for this one we ordered and the flavour was good authentic tasting. The Neur Nam Tok is made for sliced beef mint leaves, lettuce, spring onions, spices basically a Thai beef salad. I think this will be a habit every time we are in town to visit Phuket Royal.

Sour salty tom yum gai
Julia WeiYi Z.

Servers were nice, the environment wasn't bad, But the food was very very disappointing.... I ordered tom yum Gai soup, it only tasted salty and sour, nothing else... The main dish that I had was Pad Thai, seriously same sauce as fast Thai food restaurant.....chicken tasted weird too.. I've been to Thailand and I can say this isn't authentic at ALL.....

Chaminda J.

During my recent visit to Ottawa, I have visited this place twice. My kids enjoyed Thai style cooking quite a lot. Chicken Fried Rice - Good quantity and great taste. Egg plant Yello Curry - Very flavorful and highly recoomeded. try with spice level at 4 out of 5

Only been open for 1 week. All the food was extremely tasteful, prices were reasonable. Food was so good that I forgot to take a picture before the plates were empty,

does this look like a green papaya salad to u?
K J.

I am new to Ottawa and was looking for a good Thai restaurant. I ate here based on the reviews. as someone who has traveled to Thailand and had authentic Thai food this place falls short. I should have known from the green papaya salad that I was in over my head. What I got was not Green Papaya it was white looked like cabbage and carrots. The mango salad was also heavy on the carrots and easy on the mango. I got the spring rolls vegetarian they were okay. I finished with the shrimp and eggplant Curry which was just okay. The portions are a good size but the prices here are very high considering it does not taste like Thai food it tastes like Chinese people cooking Thai food . I won't be back .

One of my favourite places to go for Thai food that is still central but not situated downtown…read more It is a decent sized restaurant tucked away in a plaza at the corner of Alta Vista Drive and Bank Street. It has a very nice ambience inside due to the mix of decor and table placement. It is intimate yet casual. Even when the restaurant is busy, it does not feel cramped nor rushed. I have come many times during lunch with a group and the service is always excellent and the food is amazing. Everything is always flavorful and the staff and kitchen are really helpful with ensuring those with dietary restrictions are taken care of. If you have a large group (10+), I would recommend calling ahead and reserving a table, but there was once when we had last minute change in plans and even though it was busy, the staff was very accommodating. Be aware that because this is a smaller plaza in a busy part of town, parking can sometimes be an issue, especially during lunch time. The pricing of the food is no more or less than what is expected of a sit-in place but I think for the quality of everything you get, it is a great deal. There are also lunch specials which is easy on the wallet but you also get good portions (they definitely don't skimp). I recommend the green curry dish (as pictured is the beef version), pad thai, and drunken noodles.

The soup, Tom Yum shrimp and coconut Tom Yum shrimp was the best, not too salty and the spice was just right. Main dishes-Curry chicken with coconut milk and potato: the meat was over cooked. Beef Penang: the beef was over cooked and tough. Pineapple fried rice with seafood: it was good and has nice curry flavour. Pad Thai: part of the dish was salty. Papaya salad: the dressing was too spicy and lacks the sourness to balance the dish. Garlic shrimp: was supposed to be garlic fish, but the server forgot to tell us ahead they don't have fish. There was only one server at the restaurant that night and we waited almost an hour after the appetizers for the main dishes to arrive. I gave the server credit for trying her best to serve every table. Overall, the appetizers were the only highlight for the dinner.

I got the Chicken Pad Khee Mao ($12) and it was excellent. It had a lot of vegetables, which I loved. It had broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, Bok Choy and bean sprouts. The vegetables were all dente which I liked. I normally don't like bean sprouts and I forgot to ask to have them omitted, but it ended up being ok, because the amount of bean sprouts was not excessive and they tasted ok. The chicken was lean chicken breast slices. The thick rice noodles were a good texture, soft but not too soft. The flavour was also excellent. It had a bit of spice but it wasn't too hot. The noodles also weren't too oily. They fry it up in a wok when you order it, so it's very fresh. My friend had their iced tea and a few appetizers and she seemed to enjoy them. The couple working the stand were very welcoming and friendly. Note that the prices at the Farmers' Market are a bit less than on the restaurant menu. Not sure if the portions are smaller, but I think it's a great way to try their food for a bit less. I really enjoyed the Pad Khee Mao and I'm looking forward to trying more items from them.

Maybe the definition of being a foodie should include finding the food stand's brick-and-mortar store after devouring great food and drink at a market. It's exactly what we did. It makes sense if we aren't at the market on weekends. We can get our Thai fix here. I ended up getting finger food from this eatery at the market. I ordered a pork wonton and a shrimp spring roll. The man at the stand was so nice that he gave me a pork wonton on the house. It was a nice surprise and I will never say no to free food. I also got a Thai iced tea. Drinks were self-serve once you got a cup from him. I made the mistake of pouring sala cider instead. Oops! He was great getting me another cup and I made sure that I got Thai iced tea, which was cold and excellent on a hot day. It's funny that I ended up having both drinks. I loved my pork wontons. They were crispy on the outside. The filling was nicely seasoned. I could taste basil, which made them heavenly. There was decent shrimp filling in the spring roll, which had a nice crunch to it. My friend got the chicken pad khee mao. She loved it. She said that it had bean sprouts, which aren't her thing. However, there weren't a lot of them and she ate them all. I didn't have a chance to volunteer to eat them. The food was that good! I want noodles now. I hope to get some when I'm back, along with more finger food. (265)

She has a review, so if you're bored reading mine, go read hers instead. I frankly wanted to simply say in this review to read hers and skip writing one... haha! We walked in. The lobby was beautiful and cozy, showcasing the Thai culture with dragons and more. We were seated pretty quickly. This restaurant had a lunch menu. Yay, deals! I got the gang garee gai. It was yellow curry with chicken and potatoes, in coconut milk, with steamed jasmine rice. My friend got the beef kao soi, which was a curry soup with noodles. We got a constant stream of iced water. Thank goodness! We were both in dire need of cooling down being out and about on a hot summer day. It also came in handy while we were dining. Our food didn't take long to prepare. I was excited to chow down. The gang garee gai was yummy. I liked the curry flavour. The chicken was tender. There were a few potatoes that lightly thickened the curry. I loved the subtle coconut milk in the sauce. The jasmine rice was perfectly done. The downside was that the curry was salty. My friend agreed with my assessment, as her soup was also salty. At least the sodium levels were consistent here. She also made the comment that her dish was lacking vegetables, except for a thin slice of red pepper. I could tell that this meal threw my thirst level off the rails for the rest of my day. I had six drinks after this meal, without counting the iced water refills here. I downed two consecutive bubble teas that night, which I rarely do. The positive from the salt increase in my system: I was not bloated afterwards. The washrooms are downstairs. It is an older building, so it's not built for accessibility. The washroom was clean. It's street parking here. You can probably find a side street to park for free. The service was excellent. If the salt is toned down, I'd return to try more dishes off the menu. Otherwise, expect to be thirsty all day after eating here. (287)

Overall, I thought the food had good flavour, but it was too salty and didn't have enough vegetables. We ordered from the lunch menu and I got the Beef Kao Soi ($17.50). It came with a generous portion of beef. The beef was tender. The deep-fried noodles were tasty. The curry coconut milk broth was full of flavour, with the tiniest amount of spicy heat, but it was too salty for my tastes. Also the dish was lacking in vegetables. The only vegetables I got was that tiny sliver of red pepper in the picture I posted, and some green onions (which I consider more of a garnish). Maybe this dish doesn't traditionally come with vegetables? I don't know, but I did not feel virtuous eating just meat and noodles, lol. My friend got a chicken curry and she found her meal salty as well. Service was lovely. Very attentive but not intrusive. We drank a lot of iced water firstly because it was such a hot day out and secondly because the food was salty, and the servers refilled our waters regularly. The dining room is nicely decorated with traditional Thai items. The food itself I would give 3.5, but I'm rounding up for good service and nice ambiance. If they went easier on the salt, I would have enjoyed it much more because the seasoning and spices were great. Street parking only.
