It is a nice quiet spot for nice Thai cuisine. It has an extensive menu with lots of options. The staff is very accommodating and able to adjust the spice level depending on your taste preferences if that is something you were worried about The food was quite delicious and was a little bit on the pricey side, but seems like Thai food is getting more and more expensive and this just might be the normal pricing in the Ottawa region You get some complementary appetizer, sometimes such as shrimp chips, which is a nice touch and really brought me back to my childhood as I had this play often as a child growing up in a Chinese or east Asian family read more

I haven't been here for a good 10 years and it did not disappoint. I booked a table of 10 for my friend's birthday as we craved Thai. We started with vegetable spring rolls and fried tofu. Both were very nice and came with tasty sauces. They also serve shrimp chips as starters with peanut sauce. My friend and I then shared the Panang chicken and shrimp with stir fried eggplants. The shrimp dish was very spicy and the chicken panang was a bit spicy. We ate it with a side of steamed rice. The individual portion of rice was fairly large. I am no expert at authentic Thai but everything was served hot and the flavours were very good. The restaurant is also nicely decorated with a warm cozy vibe. While this place is at last 10 years old, it is well maintained and welcoming. I strongly recommend for either a romantic outing (they seat you in the quieter side) or for a group gathering (there is a second room). read more

I have to say I'm not a huge pad thai food person, but this place is delicious! Their pad thai dishes are delicious and they are very accommodating depending on your spice tolerance. I get the 0 spice level because I definitely don't do well with spice but my boyfriend gets the 2 star spice level which is perfect for him! Friendly owners and wait staff. Nice decor inside and clean - although if you sit by the open doors the flies do come in and can very annoying as well as unsanitary of course. We got the combo for 2 and it is perfect if the 2 of you just want a light lunch. It consists of 2 veggie spring rolls, curry of the day (today was green) and a stir fry (today was chicken) and white sticky rice. Nice presentation, good food, not great but good. I asked for extra hot sauce on the side and it had a good kick as the curry did not but understandably, has to suit all palates. Stopped in with my Dad on a whim last weekend while he was in the City. This was not my first choice for Thai but we found ourselves in the area, I was curious, so I agreed we tried it. The food was not bad, but it was not great. Average from what I've had before and my wife and I like Thai food. Portions were small as other reviews pointed out and the prices were high. Two of us ate but we were by no means stuffed and it cost $75. We both thought it expensive. The restaurant itself is nice, the ambiance is good. Lots of visual interest in the decorations. It is intimate, so expect to listen to the conversation next to you. Service was good, no complaints there. If you have trouble climbing stairs, this is not a good place, as there are step steps at the front door and the washrooms are in the basement. Wheel chairs not allowed in this place! This restaurant is a chain, so in the end I'd rather support a small local business. I have reviewed two others I would go back to in Ottawa instead of the Green Papaya. read more

Wow this place is incredible! Never been disappointed here!!!!! Tastes awesome and such a neat building that shows so much Thai history which I found very neat!! The pad Thai is my favourite but I have tried rice dishes and they were very very good like incredible! It's a 100% perfect restaurant. The staff is very nice and all well working! Came here for the first time not too long ago and quite enjoyed my visit, although I found many of their items overpriced, the service was excellent and staff were very helpful and attentive. The restaurant is also very elaborately decorated and feels like you're been transported to Thailand. I ordered a tom kha soup, pad Thai, basil beef, and some coconut rice. The soup and rice were so/so, and think I actually prefer Thai Express' pad Thai over theirs. However, the basil beef was very aromatic and delicious! I would give it 10/10. My colleagues and I came here for my birthday lunch yesterday. I made a reservation a few days ago through their website without any issues. No real complaints here, other than being seated right behind a gaggle of loud, chatty women (that's a personal grievance, not a point against the restaurant, haha). Restaurant was nice and clean, and service was attentive (my water glass never went dry). I had the Pad Thai, which was okay portion-wise and in taste, but it wasn't my favourite Pad Thai ever. I found it a little, I don't know, tomatoey? Just my personal taste. What I really wanted was the Panaeng (red curry), but unfortunately it wasn't on the lunch menu. My buddies all enjoyed their food. This is going to sound really tacky, but Thai Express has my fave Pad Thai and they give you mounds of it for less money so, haha... anyway... We went here on a Friday night before an Absolute Comedy show, a little pressed for time. Quite honestly, the food was delivered to our table in record time and we were out of there (without feeling rushed) with plenty of time to spare before the show. There are many hidden gems on Preston street, and it's a great place to take the time to discover. Their food prepped in Tajines are so delicious, it even inspired me to buy my own! My husband and I were in the area today and he had a hankering for some pad thai so we thought we would try Green Papaya. We walked in the front door the place was humid and warm inside. We were immediately confronted by one of the staff who said "we are closed, we close at 2:30" I thought she was joking but she wasn't. On the way out I looked at my watch, it was only 2:17. If you're going to deny people service and say you are closed the time posted on the door should reflect the same time you actually close. Great little restaurant located at the intersection of Gladstone and Preston. Free parking in the rear of the restaurant however spots are very limited. You can also find free and pay parking on near by streets. I'll be honest and say that I'm not a huge fan of Thai food and thats probably because my first experience wasn't the best. We came here as a large group for a friend's birthday. The restaurant is roomy and cozy. There is also a outdoor patio where people can sit and watch the hustle and bustle of Preston as they converse and dine. They start you off with shrimp chips which comes with a peanut sauce. I got a whiff of curry however I can't say for certain it had any curry. I ate the chips themselves and wasn't a huge fan of the dip. I ordered the Crispy spicy beef (#14) and found it tasteful. The dish had a hint of spicy but it wasn't overwhelming. The dish portions were generous and along with it, came a bowl of rice. Food was great however pricing I find to be on the higher side. My beef dish was $13 before tax. Service was a bit lacking however acceptable. When it came down to getting our respective cheques, it took a bit despite the restaurant not being that busy by the time we were done which was 930PM. Take note of your cheque as you'll find gratuity already calculated and included in the final cheque amount. Overall its a decent place for Thai food if you're located within Central Ottawa. The great thing is, if you for some reason get cold feet, you have many, many options as its located in the Italian district and in close proximity to the China Town district on Somerset. read more

Intimate surroundings in what I might imagine was my Thai grandmother's living room (except my Granny was Scottish)! Very good food. Tasty and not at all overpowering on the spices (although we didn't pick any 5 pepper rated dishes). What struck me most about the food was that it wasn't greasy, like many Chinese dishes. We started with Satays and poh pia sot - vegetarian spring rolls with a belt of coriander and a wonderful peanut dipping sauce. We then shared a chicken cashew dish, pad Thai and a beef curry in coconut milk. That with steamed rice was enough for the four of us. We all finished with mango and coconut ice cream. A great meal. Came here on a Sunday evening looking to have a good time with family and friends as well as to find excellent food. Well, I definitely got what I everything that I was asking for! The fam jam and I came here, some of us are true foodies while some of us ( dad ) is a meat and potatoes kind of guy. He was a really good sport for coming out, so I really wanted him to enjoy himself. We ended up ordering several dishes to share as per the wonderful staff's suggestions and it was a major hit. Dad apparently loves pad Thai now- AMAZING!!! Not only would I recommend that all foodies try this place at least once, but I would also recommend that people who are looking for a bit of a culinary adventure to come here. This is a cozy little restaurant with a very friendly atmosphere. Our group decided to visit this location after enjoying their take away service on numerous occasions. Since we were a large enough group I was able to sample a number of the great dishes offered at the Green Papaya. Their Pad Thai was simple, but good and I particularly enjoyed their Chicken Potatoe Curry. They offer a varied selection of items on their menu, with a good spice indicator. If the menu indicates an item is "hot" it's hot! The service was equally good and our server managed our group, questions and special requests with missing a beat. read more

I ordered a curry potato chicken. It was about 15 bucks and was a pretty good dish (although a lot more potatoes than chicken). The server brought me some rice on the side (even though I didn't ask for it, I just assumed it came with the curry dish). The curry was good, but after looking at the bill I realized they charged me 4$ just for the rice. I mean it's pretty fair to assume a curry dish should come with rice, but to charge me without telling me it was extra and bring it over even though I didn't ask for it was pretty scummy I thought. We were in the mood for Thai food tonight and decided to try the Green Papaya as it was in our neighbourhood. I knew it had been on Preston for a long time so we thought it had stood the test of time. The dining room itself was nice as was the patio so it started off well. We decided to order our Thai favourites: a Thai Beef Salad, a Pad Thai and a Green Curry with chicken. All the dishes arrived at our table at the same time despite having asked for the salad first, and we were disappointed with everything. Nothing was piping hot despite the fact that it arrived very quickly after we had ordered. When done well, the thai beef salad is usually a lovely combination of citrus, salt, aromatic cilantro and spicy beef hot off the grill, but this one arrived with some luke warm beef doused in gritty hot spice powder and had hardly any cilantro or lime in the dressing. Not a hit. Next we tried the pad thai - a very meagre helping for 15.95 and nothing to write home about. (not sure where to go for good pad thai now that Fusion on Somerset is gone) Finally, a lack lustre green curry, again, luke warm with a few green and red peppers swimming in a runny, flavourless curry sauce. The only white wine on offer by the glass to wash this mess down was a Chardonnay - not a particularly nice grape to go with spice. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves the fresh aromatic combinations that Thai food is known for. I will stick to Talay Thai on Bank Street next time... read more

Arrived there on a Tuesday evening around 6:30pm, restaurant was about 70% full with two fairly large groups in the rear. Ambeince was nice, service was slow as there appeared to be only two servers available. I was disappointed by the fact my beer requests were not available, they had no Tsing Tao or Heineken so settled for a domestic beer. Ordered the chicken spring rolls and fish cakes for appetizers, both were greasy and the spring rolls came slightly overdone. Main course was Beef with thai herbs, bamboo shoots and green peppers. The dish was a medium heat level and had a nice flavour. Other entree was a chicken curry with potato and was very sweet. My wife enjoyed her curry dish but it was too sweet for my tastes. Main courses require rice to be ordered on the side but you are served complimentary shrimp crackers that comes with a delicious curried peanut sauce. I ordered the Pad Ki Mao, which actually was not even a Pad Ki Mao at all but more of a Pad Thai, and I couldn't discern much flavouring other than soy sauce, chilies and oil. We attended this restaurant last night for my sisters graduation dinner. We came at 7pm and we were the only guests. There were 2 young children at our table too, which usually means you need prompt service. They took 30 minutes just to fulfill the drink order and then another 40 minutes for tyre appetizers. We assumed the food would follow shortly after but around the 2 hour mark I went to the kitchen to find our waitress because we hadnt seen anyone for 1 hour. They told me that they are so busy and that that is why the food was taking so long, but there werre no other guests. The baby at our table was crying at this point and we were all stressed and ready to leave but they weren't even appologetic. By far the rudest staff I have ever seen. They only offered 10% off the final bill as compensation. The food was very average and over priced. Definetly not a good Thai restaurant. I dont know how they are in business.
