Hot Pot with Pork Mala Soup and free Watermelon Juice
    John C.

I was invited to ho here for lunch, so was happy to try it. I've been to plenty of full-service hot pot restaurants recently, but this is the first self-serve I've been too. We arrived at 11am at open so it wasn't too busy. The first thing you do once you enter is grab a bowl and set of tongs. Then we turned the corner, and there are two walls of ingredients to pick from. There's plenty of regular items I would see at most hot pot restaurants, but also a few I've never seen before. So this set up is nice because if I wanted to try something, I could grab a piece or two and not a whole serving like at a full service hot pot restaurant. At the counter, they weigh your food and if your bowl is over $18, they offer a free bonus item. You also pick your soup combination at this time. They then give you a number so they can deliver your food to you once it's ready. The dining area is simple, but clean. Different table sizes to accommodate different groups. There is a small sauce/side bar and a self serve ice cream (ice milk?) machine. Also plenty of take out containers and bags if you don't finish. The food probably started arriving 10 minutes later. As a group of 6, there was probably a 15 minute gap between when the first person and last person got their food, so I i suspected they didn't have full staff to prepare food or deliver as it became available. I enjoyed my food. The soup was good, and at $20 I got a generous amount of food. For the same amount of food, it probably would've cost twice as much at a full service place. Given this, I would come back because it's much more affordable.

Our 2nd time having dinner here. We came early to get a table as we were a fairly large group. Thankfully there was no wait and they were able to set up a table for us right away. This place has been open for quite awhile now but they still have a special promotion just like they did when they were first opening where if you spend a certain amount, you get a free item. Back during their soft opening it was, "Spend a minimum of $15 and get a free Chinese Burger or Daily Drink." This time it was a "Spend a minimum of $18 and get a free Chinese Burger, Golden Fried Fish Strips, Fresh Watermelon Juice or Daily Tea." Most of us opted for the Watermelon Juice. This was very refreshing. I hope they keep on offering this kind of promotion every time. I especially loved that the Watermelon Juice was a caffeine free beverage. I tend to worry about consuming caffeine later in the day as it can wreck my sleep at night time. Our free ice cream this time was Guava Passionfruit and it was delicious! This place is definitely our favourit hot pot place now! Wish they'd open up more Datang restaurants!

    Hong Kong chicken broth

This place has a greater variety of noodles than bigway! They also have side dishes at the sauce station (kimchi, pickled vegetables, peanuts). I got the Hong Kong chicken broth, and it had a strong chicken flavour (not just salt and oil like bigway's) and even came with small dates inside! I also tried half of my friend's Chinese burger, but that was kinda mid. I just didn't like how the meat inside tasted. Overall it's significantly more expensive than bigway, at $2.25 per 50g (bigway= $3.99 per 100g) so I would recommend this place if you're looking for quality over quantity.

Another hot pot place in Richmond - difference between this one is that they have different perks if you spend over $15 - either a free osmanthus/watermelon drink, Chinese bao, or 2 beef skewers. I ended up getting the free drink. Went on a Friday night where bigway/piping would be super busy, we got a table right away. Not too many customers actually. Looking at their selection, it seems to be a little bit less than the other places. They only got 2-3 different types of leafy greens, but they do have a decent selection of fish balls (but nothing that's "special". Got two areas of food, but the second area was basically a repeat of the first which is kind of disappointing. Would much rather then put out other types of items. Beef slices are thinner than the other places, and actually ended up becoming super small once I got my bowl. Definitely the pieces had broken apart in the cooking process and a lot of it was lost/disintegrated. No cilantro/sesame seed option when you're weighing your food (honestly a con for me!!). It also took quite a while to get our food - much longer than I'm used to!! Food was as expected. They have different types of broth that's unique - pho, Japanese pork bone, Hong Kong chicken broth. It was on the blander side in the beginning (which was actually good because I don't like it when the broth is too salty), but gradually started to get saltier and flavourful due to the black pepper which was disappointing. Ice cream is self serve - could be a pro or con depending on how you feel. I rather them serve me, but if you want a cone with more ice cream, this is your opportunity!! Consistency of the ice cream is less milky and more on the icy side. With the amount of places for these hot-pot places, don't think I would come back. Nothing about this place stands out from others unfortunately.

Not bad for hot pot! Good reasonable ingredient and Broth selections. The place needs to be a bit more clean in my opinion but overall it was a enjoyable experience. Love their HK Chicken Broth!

Wanted to branch out from big way to see what others have to offer. Also wanted to take advantage of their free roujiamo with over $15 spend. They have plenty of ingredients to choose from including razor clam which is not at bigway. Prices are the same I think at $3.99/100g. The place is spacious and decorations are nice. I know big way is always too tight and they try to fit too many tables. Service is mediocre. They don't walk around to monitor. Sauce bar is similar. I like that they have the green sichuan pepper oil. I got the fish maw chicken broth with added laksa flavoring. I couldn't tell what I was tasting - it was neither chicken broth nor laksa. Wasn't a fan of the soup. Husband got their pork bone broth with spicy mala. Wasn't that great either. Big way and super thai is better. The free roujiamo was not good. The dough was either stale or they overmixed it and although it was flaky, it was hard. The meat mixture inside didn't have flavor. It's nice they have a self serve ice cream station but it's a bit unsanitary because everyones hands are touching the cones - the cones are all stacked and some are stuck to each other so you need to touch both to pry it apart. They do offer tongs but it doesn't help. I was able to get ice cream once and then the machine was out of ice cream. Even after waiting 15 min, nobody came to even refill it so we just left. There's a parking lot behind and on the side.

I went with a group of friends during soft opening where you get a free hamburger or drink if you spend over $15. I like the concept but it was quite disorganized. They were opening at half the capacity which is fine but didn't have an organized way for the waitlist. My friends joined the waitlist and decided to wait in the car until it was our turn. However I decided to wait in the restaurant. To my surprise, the server let the people who waited in the restaurant to get food right away. So I called all my friends to come in even though the waitlist said it wasn't even our turn yet. When my friends all came in, the server was nowhere to be found so we had to wait until she came back. It just felt very disorganized. The food choices were decent and comparable to Big Way. I enjoyed the refreshing free tea with the promo. Didn't get a chance to try the hamburger or skewers. Once we finished our order, there was no staff to lead us to a table. We finally tracked one down and finally got a table. The meal was not bad! However the disorganized service/waitlist made it less enjoyable.

I love a good weighted hot pot spot. My gripe is the extensive wait times during rush hours. On a Wednesday night at 11pm, we breezed right in! This spot is open late night until 2am. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Great customer service! They currently have a promotion that if you purchase over $15, you can choose a drink or a Chinese burger add on for free. I tried the HK chicken soup base and the Tom yum dry mix. I didn't love the combo too much, it was super oily and the broth wasn't full bodied. It felt like packaged ramen you would make at home and added extra ingredients. Lots of variety of veggies, meat, seafood and beancurd to pick from. I enjoy the handcrafted noodles a lot, great bouncy texture. My favourite part of this experience is the self serve ice cream machine!!! Would come back just for this. It was the rose vanilla flavour, I just enjoy operating the machine and making swirlies! And you can get unlimited cones. Overall, good value, but there are better broth bases elsewhere.

Lowkey this place is fire, even though it's not the healthiest choice and has quite a bit of msg. I would describe this spot as a less crowded, more spacious version of big way, and because of this in some ways feels more hygienic. This is a ma la tang restaurant, where you pick your toppings, soup base, and pay by weight. I believe spending over $20 gets you a free apple or drink. I find this spot to be pretty affordable with a $20-25 bowl leaving me feeling extremely full! My favourite is the tom yum soup base for its spicy sourness! And they give you an ice cream in the end (nothing special). Generally food feels fresh, I leave without a stomach ache, and don't feel like I need to fight crowds or wait a long time to eat here.

Very comfortable and spacious interior! The food selection is similar to big way hot pot. The quality of the food is okay. I do find that datang's broths are better than big way hot pot though. There's also a soft serve station at your convenience and I like that they have boxes and bags available that you can take home with you if you don't finish your meal. Overall it's a great experience!

Another day, another Big Way competitor. Funnily enough, I saw a few familiar worker faces I had previously seen at Big Way. I wonder if they rotate around in search of better wages haha... The hype for this one was quite large, especially on social media. They are running a deal in which any pot over $15 gives you a free drink or a burger appetizer. I have been here on two occasions already. The first time I went, I wasn't very hungry, so I wondered if that was why I didn't enjoy it very much. Came back a second time and confirmed that this place just isn't as good as the other places. Since the ingredient selection is more or less the same, what didn't hit deep for me were the soup bases. The soup bases claim to be made in house and fresh everyday and they did taste like what they were labelled. However, I couldn't really pinpoint anything unique or delicious about them. They also have flavour add ons, which I didn't really understand but I also got original flavour everytime. For the free appetizer, the burger was not bad, just an average crispy pancake with fatty meat inside. What really made me question the experience was the condiment bar and ice cream service. The condiments were often empty and didn't seem to be well cleaned or taken care of. In addition, they leave to go containers out on the bar for people to self-serve. For myself personally, this doesn't seem the most sanitary. The ice cream machine is also self serve which is nice but at the same time, questionable because some people will undoubtedly mess with the machine (or get way more than they can realistically finish). In addition, both times I went the ice cream was very icy and artificial. The interior otherwise is big and new, I think it's worth a try as it could cater to your tastes but it's a pass for me!

Checked out Datang Hot Pot in Richmond and really liked it. It's another pay-by-weight spot similar to Big Way, but the interior here is much nicer with lots of seating and a clean, modern feel. I went with the Hong Kong Chicken broth and kept it original. It was super flavourful and I actually preferred it over the broth options I've tried at Big Way, even though they don't offer this exact one. The only downside was the soft serve. Their ice cream machine took a while to get going, so we ended up waiting over 30 minutes for it. Other than that, the food and i would go back again if I was in the area.

Ordered the tomato broth and layered it with the laksa flavour booster. Sooo good!
    Paul S.

I'd say this is comparable to other pay by weight hotpot places except for a few things that make them stand out. I appreciate the fact that they have side dishes by the sauce station like kimchi and pickled veggies. It's also unlimited so that's a big plus. I also love how the have unlimited ice cream and that it's also self serve. The to-go bags are top tier quality and "you can take as many as you want" This place also allows you to add a second layer of flavour to your broth which makes the options that much broader. Ingredients are also all fresh. The place is clean and looks kinda poshy. All in all, it's become my go to for pay by weight hotpot when I'm in the area!

Way too many noodles to choose from

I liked their AYCE menu and had been wanting to come back, only to find out when we sat down that…read moreAYCE was no longer available. Huge bummer. We arrived around 9 PM and stood at the entrance for 3-5 minutes while multiple staff walked past us without any acknowledgment. Most tables were empty, so it wasn't clear whether we were supposed to seat ourselves. I eventually had to stop someone, who then brushed us off and grabbed someone else instead. After sitting down, I asked about AYCE and was told it was discontinued in October 2025. The waiter mentioned happy hour and said we could get an extra discount with a student ID, but when we showed our U.S. student IDs, they wouldn't accept them. Lame, but whatever. The price is acceptable during happy hour. The seats are uncomfortable, and the kitchen was very loud that night. The floor vibrated on and off throughout our meal. The biggest issue: bugs. They clearly know it's a problem since there's a small fan over the sauce station to keep the bugs away, but it didn't help. We found a dead bug in the sauce we made before dipping our food. There were also bugs flying over our food the entire time (see photos). That alone is unacceptable. Food came out almost instantly after ordering on our phones. Impressively fast. Everything tasted good, but I wouldn't order the spicy broth again. I know that's the style, but even at one-star spice it was extremely oily and overpowering for me. Another ongoing annoyance was staff constantly messing with our stove. On both visits, we ordered multiple broths. The spicy broth boiled aggressively because of all the oil, while the non-spicy broth barely simmered. We didn't like the spicy broth at all and just wanted the non-spicy one hot enough to actually cook food. Every time I turned up the heat, staff immediately turned it back down because the spicy broth was boiling. As a result, the non-spicy broth never properly boiled the entire meal, and our food was likely undercooked. Extremely frustrating. Last time we came, we got complimentary ice cream at the end. This time, we didn't. I assumed they stopped offering it, but based on other recent reviews, they just didn't give us one. I'm not coming back until AYCE is back and the bug problem is actually fixed.

You scan a QR code and order from your phone (there is free wifi). The food was good, just another solid hot pot place. The broth was really spicy so beware! We ended the meal with complimentary black sesame ice cream which was a fun bonus!
