Eating at Das Schnitzelhaus took me back to my trips to Germany. They serve a variety of traditional German foods ranging from sauerkraut to schnitzel, apple strudel and more. We got the Parmesan Herb Schnitzel and The Big Sampler. The schnitzel had a flavorful breading that provided a nice crunchy texture to the veal, and the sauce took the flavor to the next level. The spätzle was okay... it needed a little more salt and had too much butter. The Big Sampler did not disappoint and offered a taste of everything. They ran out of pork chop late in the evening, so it was replaced with a pork hock. The sauerkraut, cabbage, and mustards paired nicely with the sausage and pork hock, offering a sweet and tangy break to my palette. The pork hock was tender and fell right off the bone. And while this is the least exciting thing on the plate, the fries were still made to perfection! Service was excellent and accommodating to dietary restrictions, and the outdoor ambience offered a beautiful view of the charming town and surrounding mountains. read more

While visiting Canmore we came here for lunch. We got a table outside. It was very pleasant. They were serving lunch so had a limited menu. I ordered the das schnitzel sandwich. Open faced sandwich with schnitzel and tomato. I ordered the salad for my side. My husband got a huge beer and the brisket sandwich with fries. It was an enjoyable lunch. The waitstaff was EXCELLENT ! The Hunter Schnitzel was excellent The Combo with Saurbraten and Roulade was FANTASTIC ! The "Veal" Wiener Schnitzel was NOT VEAL Meaning NOT TENDER. I was new to the area visiting and looking for food. Lots of the normal choices. German is not what I would normally go for but a couple eating outside had a huge plate that looked good and they said it was really good. so we gave it a shot. no problem getting a table for two and started with German beers. Got the chicken schnitzel with spatzel and cabbage. I still remember the food to this day, it really stood out how good it was. I will go back for sure and recommend it highly. I didn't think there would be a legit German schnitzel place in the Banff/Canmore region that was also open a little later than others (since many places tend to close early - especially in the off season when I went). But to my surprise, this was one of the best schnitzels I've ever had! The Hunter Schnitzel was a big portion (honestly enough for two ppl) but the highlight for me was spatzle. The combo worked so well together! Also tried their special with the pork and it was cooked well and came out in huge portions. The sides were also delicious! Found this German restaurant on Yelp! You've got to try it. The service was excellent, the flavors were surprising (in a good way) and the atmosphere is wonderful. We visited in the summer, and we were able to get seated right away at 6:00 P.M. without a reservation. I got the dunkel beer from a brewery in Calgary called Fahr. I really enjoyed that. The goulash had a tasty spice to it. You can order half portions which is really the way to go. I got the goulash half portion, and it was plenty for an appetizer. Our main entrees were the Parmesan herb schnitzel (pork) with red cabbage and spätzel and the hunters schnitzel (chicken) with red cabbage and spätzel. Delicious! We would come back. Great location on main street Canmore. My friends had tried supper here and highly recommended this place. Friends tried the Fahr beer and liked this. Too "beer"- like for me. I got an ounce of raspberry vodka in Gingerale (No sprite, or 7-up available). I liked it. Very pretty glass but it was half full with ice.  Inside the restaurant is very nice but we chose the patio. Bathroom was clean. Patio was 50% full on a Friday for lunch.  I tried the Large wiener schnitzel. This was supposed to come with "a variety of small European salad" so I expected several different salads but it was just 1 giant salad. I liked the dressing but it was too much for 1 person and felt like it was overcompensating for the lack of protein on the plate. Was 10/10 disappointed in the schnitzel - it was MINISCULE. The cheapest, smallest piece of schnitzel I have Ever seen. Gravy was delicious.  Friend got the Duo of Bratwurst but I think he actually got the Trio of Sausages (as there were 3 on his plate). 2/3 were delicious. One was not to my liking. Cabbage was very nice and potatoes were really good too.  Friends got the Frikadellen and was very happy with this as well.  Overall food was good but I HIGHLY do not recommend the schnitzel - SUCH a disappointment. read more

This place is amazing! It is on the pricey side but the portions are huge. You literally get 2 large pieces of snitzel and the sides. Literally 2 meals. If you don't want left overs I do suggest order the 1/2 portions because it's huge. I am still eating my leftovers. We also ordered their pretzel and bratwurst as an appy. It was a perfect appy to share. The apple strudel was alright, have to admit, not my favorite strudel but their desserts are made in house. As soon as we walked in the cozy vibe pretty much drew me in like a siren. Or whatever the German version of a siren is... All I wanted to do was grab a booth and get settled in. The lights were low enough to make the place seem intimate and just noisy enough to let you know other patrons were present and also respecting the cozy vibe. And just so you know, the wait staff should definitely be trusted. If they give a recommendation don't try to blaze your own path here, like I did, just take their advice and have an awesome meal. My bestie had the Hunter Schnitzel and I got the 10oz Rump Steak. The appetizer and dessert were my favorite parts of the meal. The Crispy Morsels of Beef and the Linzer Torte...drool worthy, I tell you. The rump steak was fairly good, nice beef flavor, but I wasn't partial to the demi-glace. That was my mistake because I forgot what a demi-glace tasted like so that's totally on me because it was on par with what it a demi-glace should be. Want me to say demi-glace again =]? Anyway, my main was passable and only kind of what I was craving. I should have followed the server's suggestion and not my mouth that was so set on having a large piece of juicy beef. Next time I'll be getting the Parmesan Schnitzel. Now if you're like my bestie and actually follow advice, the Hunter Schnitzel was an excellent choice. It was super flavorful, a little salty to my palate, and a large portion. It was definitely as delicious as promised. If you're feeling like adding an appetizer though, I highly, highly recommend the Crispy Bits of Awesome. The beef was so flavorful, the crispy coating didn't taste overly fried, the batter was thin and crispy, not thick and very much like any breaded meat option at a Chinese restaurant. And a mouthful of that with the greens and dressing around it? My mouth died a little death...wink wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean know what I mean, say no more say no more...? But for dessert, to end a really great meal, the Linzer Torte was just right. Bright and citrusy, sweet and jammy, flaky and crumbly, this was exactly what we were hoping for. Especially eaten together with the creamy ice cream. So eat, my fellow yelpers, at this gem and don't tell too many other people...I don't want to have to wait in line the next time I'm there. read more

The staff had an issue with guests wearing masks. They told us to take our masks off, when we were sitting quietly. We didn't ask anyone to put on masks. We weren't bothering anyone. When we arrived, we were told it would be a 30 minute wait for an outdoor seat. That's fine. But then they said it would be a few minutes. Then, two hours passed, and we tried to get their attention, and they actively ignored us. We tried to do to-go, but they wouldn't speak to us. There were two empty patio tables for us to sit at. Very solid German food and highly recommended based on our experience. The salad, goulash suppe, wurst, rouladen and sides were very tasty. Schnitzels were a little dry and over breaded. Overall, this is probably the most authentic German meal we have had since moving back to the States in 2018. The beers we had were yummy, but wish they had more options with a German style pils on draft. Very poor service. The server was very rude and racist- we asked if we can taste a beer and she said yes. She let my boyfriend try two different beers. However, when I asked to try one she said it tastes like any other Pilsner. She only filled my boyfriend's water. The food was salty. Weren't sure what to expect but wow! Starting off with a house salad and the Wiener Schnitzel, the meal was absolutely delicious and the portions were generous. We decided to finish off the meal with a homemade Apple streusel + Linzer torte and they were just as amazing as the main course. Had dinner here while on vacation and our family of 4 was very impressed. We are from Minnesota and like to visit German restaurants and this one was excellent. We had the Wiener schnitzel and Hunter schnitzel and they were both delicious! Wonderfully prepared and very generous portions! Spaetzle was very good as was the purple cabbage. We stopped for a quick dinner at Das Schnitzelhaus today and are not in any hurry to return anytime soon! This is our 3rd visit, the first 2 times were amazing but today was a different story. The restaurant and patio were empty when we arrived..3 adults, one toddler, 1 infant. Our server was very indifferent and somewhat friendly but mostly just doing their job. We got our favorite table in the nook by the window and ordered our beverages. We had to ask for a high chair as one was not offered and ordered our food. The food came and unlike previous visits where we ordered the exact same thing it was over salted, over cooked and way less portions for more money. Our server checked in on us to see how the meals were then was non existent. Half the table had left already and I waited to get take out boxes and pay and it took almost 15 minutes. Our server definitely had more tables when we left but was certainly not so busy that we needed to be ignored like that. I do appreciate that staffing shortages are a problem in the Bow Valley but this just felt like neglect. We may try it again one day but I can get better authentic schnitzel at other restaurants in town than what we were served here today! read more
