Bob? Who is Bob? Oh...SHISH KA-BOB! A very good Persian restaurant is located in Southern California's Orange County-- DARYA in Orange. There is one dish I favor and you can pretty much base my review on my favorite dish. ~Beef. Beef. Beef. The Beef Shish Kabob was is delicious. The dish has perfectly prepared meat, placed on a gigantic bed of basmati rice, flavored with love. Yes, love! The meat is tender and juicy. I have never had it dry. The tomatoes, onions and bell pepper are also very well prepared. The grilled tomato is pretty tasty. The restaurant is spacious, clean and well decorated. The parking is ok. I never had a problem. While this place is not the best, in my opinion, it is pretty darn good. When I am craving beef shish kabob..this place is for me. Eh... I didn't think Darya was all that great. I honestly think nearby Saffron Grill is better than this place at least for the rice & meat plates. The restaurant is kinda fancy and there was even live entertainment (some solo Persian guitarist) but the cost of food was a bit high for dinner and didn't taste that great. At least the free flat bread appetizer was actually hot unlike at Saffron Grill. I got a juicy chicken with rice entree plate to share and a dolemeh appetizer. I opted to upgrade the rice that came with juicy chicken to the green garlic rice and the final cost was $20 for that particular plate... a bit expensive compared to other places if you ask me. Dolemeh... I haven't had something like this in a long time and I still don't really like it. The grape leaf just must be an acquired taste. Not only that, the leaf was dry and coarse on the outside but there was so much liquid inside that it leaked all over the place when we tried to eat it... The juicy chicken plate that came out was ginormous and we couldn't even finish it. It came with 5 humongous pieces of boneless chicken. While the chicken was okay, the big disappointment was the rice. I love Persian Basmati rice but this one was not that good. Maybe it was my mistake in asking for the green garlic one. The most interesting thing about my dining experience was looking at the people that came in for dinner. There were big parties that came to celebrate graduations. We saw a lot of women in interesting attire and there were a lot of beautiful Persian people that night. read more

This is a tough review...because the food here is fabulous! Dear reader I know you are confused because you see I gave it two stars. "Who gives a restaurant with fabulous food two stars?" you ask. i do...and here is why. Restaurants with fabulous food failing are an industry cliche. Because there is more than just great food for why people go out to eat. Anyone with decent cooking skills can make a great meal. But it is the ambiance, the being with other people, the service...those are other reasons why people go out to eat. This is a family operation...whichever member is in charge of the kitchen should be praised. The Filet shish Kabob, Chicken koobideh and barley rice were amazing. The Chicken melts in your mouth; the filet was cooked perfectly with great flavor. But whatever family member runs the rest of the house should be fired or given a cleaning job. The restaurant was dirty and worn looking, gnats were on the window (inside), we were first seated next to a dirty back room and then switched our seats, red wine was served warm (after the waiter forgot to bring the wine or let us order it), waiter forgot to enter our order which made food arrive after we drank our late arriving wine. Finally, they tried the old game of suggesting tip by including tax (sorry, I know math and I know the tipping rules). The belly dancer was just okay...her wardrobe malfunction was the highlight of her performance (and the only reason she ever came in our direction). The water apologized by saying he had a large table to serve. And I apologize too for leaving you a 10% tip (pre-tax). You have had such a hard day helping OTHER people that I wouldn't want MY money weighing you down. So food...5 stars. Service and wine program (the disappointment of the red wine was only matched by the mediocrity of the overall list); half star. And I downgraded the average at the lame attempt on increasing tipping. Darya, I know Rosine's. I have dined at Rosine's. Darya, you are no Rosine's. read more

Excellent service, I appreciate the hospitality that was shown to us by the hostess. But as for the food, I have been spoiled by Raffis in Glandale... The beef barg was ok but not amazing like at Raffis.. The lubia rice was good but had a little too much cinnamon.. The rose water ice cream (my favorite) was ok but not nearly as good as the one Raffis serves.. The baklava & Persian tea are both very delicious here :) read more

I really like this restaurant due to the consistency of quality food that they serve. I have been to this restaurant about 3 times now and tried a variety of dishes and they are all great. I am Persian so I know Persian food really well. And this restaurant has not ever disappointed me. Here are my recommendations: For appetizers the tahdig (which is the crispy rice made at the bottom of the rice pot) is amazing with any combination sauces. Also the yogurt dip with mint and cucumber really compliments any kabob that you order. For the main dish if you like beef I really recommend the beef koobideh, if you don't like ground beef then try the beef barg, which is a beaten filet mignon. You cannot go wrong with either one of these. If you like chicken then try the chicken kabob it's marinated to pure perfection. All of these dishes come with a side of rice and salad. Their salads are great as well. You can't go wrong trying anything at this place. So I totally recommend trying it!! Don't forget the amazing tea, a perfect end to an amazing meal. read more

I ordered vegetable skewers for dinner. I was told that they were out of mushrooms. I figured that was no problem. When my dinner arrived, it was a plate full of onions and a few pieces of green peppers. It was ridiculous. When I asked the server if there were other vegetables, he said no. Came here twice and the most recent visit was to celebrate a friend's birthday. We were a party of 12. Was seated right away. It was a Saturday afternoon and it was not crowded. Since its the weekend, there's no lunch special and the menu offered are dinner prices. We were not told in advanced so I was looking for beef on the lunch menu and did not find any. Anyways I asked our helpful server and mystery solved I got the lentil soup, it's perfectly cooked with just the right taste of lemon n spices. The sirloin kebab with saffron and berries rice and ordered their favorite chicken kebab with rice. The rice was soft, fluffy and vey tasty. A bit tardy because of the berries but still very delicious. It's a bit on the pricey part but good eats!!! read more

I have been here for dinner two times, both times the food was very good. The Hummus is very tasty and the Chicken Shish Kabob is so flavorful. It is some of the best chicken I have ever had. I am also a very big fan of the Saffron Basmati Rice. I could eat that stuff everyday. I also tried the Filet Shish Kabob, but it wasn't nearly as good as the chicken. This use to be my favorite Persian food, I don't know what has happened the past few times but it's just been disappointing to the point that they are going to be off my radar for a while. the wait staff has changed and the service has gone downhill, the food this time around was just HORRIBLE, we asked if they had good tadig or was it just the "sidedig" as I call it and the girl was very Persistent that no it was good, when they brought it out it was basically soft rice with khoresht on it. The barg was chewy and really bad, and I won't even comment on the rice, it was that BAD. I mean I would drive out of our way to go to this place but after tonight never again read more

I've been coming here for YEARS. I would come here ever since I was a little kid and honestly, Darya never disappoints. Okay, I lied they disappointed me once. They messed up my to-go order and gave me chicken barg instead of chicken koobideh and I was absolutely disappointed since I hate chicken barg but it's okay. All the other times I have gone have made up for it. Their service is amazing here and the servers are so nice. They make you feel so welcomed. Roozbeh and Shabnam are so nice and give great service!! I've always enjoyed my food here. Their chicken koobideh is my favorite but their beef soltani is amazing as well. Being Persian, I'm super picky with stews and don't order them when I go to Persian restaurants but their stews here are so good! I have tried their ghormeh sabzi and gheymeh on tadig and they are so good. I've actually ordered their fesenjoon twice here too. I threw my college graduation party here back in June and could not have asked for better service and food. Everybody raved about the food and the service Darya gave me was superb. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for some delicious Persian food or even a place for a banquet or party! read more

Darya is more on the pricy side, but it offers great tasting Persian food. Interior is quite upscale. The walls were decorated with paintings of native americans while the restaurant played French music... I believe Darya was suffering an identity crisis. Anyways, the food was great! We came at 3:05 and were 5 minutes too late for the lunch menu. The free flatbread with butter they offered us was a pleasant surprise, but nothing amazing. I had the Koobideh Combo Plate ($15.99). It came with one beef koobideh, one chicken koobideh, a large pile of rice, and roasted tomato. The chicken was amazing: tender and flavorful. Beef was alright, but chicken was just that much better. The rice was good but there was way too much. I ate about a third! My friend had the Lamb Shank ($15.99) , which was very tender. The stew that it came in had a strong tomato flavor. The green rice it came with was great. A lot mushier, but more flavorful. The lady that served us needs to work on her attitude. I haven't dealt with that much sass from a server before. She looked at us raised eyebrows and was generally very condescending. I believe her name may have been Victoria? Either way, if this review was based on service, it'd get 1 star. read more

The food and service is great here! Our server Naazi was incredible. I actually have been visiting more often lately and sending my friends to dine at Darya, because of Naazi's amazing service & genuine care. She's knowledgeable & very pleasant. Our visit was on Saturday night. They offer live music!! It's best if you make reservations in advance. The ambiance can be better though. They did some work lately but not enough. Atmosphere: First thought: Wow am I under dressed? The ambiance is so elegant with a very Baroque style. However, from the outside the neon "Darya" sign kinda makes the place look like a casual Greek restaurant that would be filled with retired people. Can't judge a book by it's cover right? This is my first time eating Persian food so I had no idea what to order. I asked the waiter what he recommended and he referred us to look at the combo platters to have a little bit of everything. So we went with that and got Combo #3 with the filet mignon, lamb, and chicken. Food: It was really flavory and wasn't chewy like I would think all shish kabobs were like. Loved the bastami rice! Never had it before. So light and not as starchy as normal rice. I was quite impressed and content with trying this restaurant out. Service: the staff were so nice & friendly. They made sure we had a good first time experience and we did. Other thoughts: When we arrived there was a hot belly dancer. After that was over there was live music from a solo guitarist. It really gave me the full & authentic Persian experience in a beautiful setting. They must throw tons of weddings here. I really like this place. I had never had Persian food before going to this restaraunt and I'm sure if you enjoy it you'd love this place. The eggplant appetizer we started out with was a bit too much for me though my wife did enjoy it and the waitress recommended it. The fillet mignon was absolutely spectacular as was the cheesecake. The staff was very friendly and accomodating EXCEPT the hostess working the front desk who turned and looked in the dining room and told us to sit wherever we'd like. Considering how nice the restaraunt looks and the fact that they have valet parking I expect to be seated, this isn't In & Out! read more

We were the guest of Rita and Wes Shrader at their favorite place to host close friends. It was a delightful evening of delicious food (Z and I had the shared beef,chicken and lamb platter) great service and wonderful friends. The night was topped off by the romantic musical stylings of the guitarist Amir. I can't tell you how many times over the years I've drove by and even parked next to Darya's and never thought about checking it out. Glad we did! We hope the owner of this beautiful restaurant recognize that the Shrader's are a big part of many coming for the first time and then coming back. Thanks again Rita!! read more

Mmmmmmm.... yummy persian food. I have been fortunate to go to this restaurant on several occasions. Last night was the first time I ate there in one of their banquet rooms for a rehearsal dinner. The food was delicious as always, we had a variety of appetizers following a delicious dinner which ended with some desserts and tea. We hardly noticed any of the servers only because they were so quick to pour us another drink, change our plates, and bring out the food. It was a job well done. We were also fortunate enough to have a belly dancer serenade the bride and groom in a few dances. It was definitely a fun and memorable night. Overall, this food is great the atmosphere is relaxing and the everything is clean. The service is prompt and best of all they pack up your food for you (even if you have a banquet style as we did). I don't like wasting food... especially when it's delicious. :) read more

This would have been a one star review if it wasn't for Darya's delicious, homemade hummus and pita. Everything else was just awful. I had been hearing about the amazing cherry rice for days leading up to a large dinner party at Darya's. I swear it was Uncle Ben's with cherries. I cannot fully express the amount of disappointment I felt! I had a bit of meat and a bite of rice for dinner. Moving on to dessert, I'm pretty sure someone took a mound of shit from a nearby farm and served it to me for dessert. Cow pie anyone????? This gives the word "disgusting" a whole new meaning. It was actually so gross looking that we felt compelled to take a picture and send to almost everyone we know. Everyone replied with something along the lines of, "WTF is that?" or "Ew what is that!?" Please see the pic I posted of the dessert. I really don't even know what else to say about it - it was just awful. Oh... and the bartenders SUCK. Slowest bartenders I've ever met and I'm not convinced he knew the difference between the gin bottle and the vodka bottle. read more

I love this place. Service is always great and the food just fills me up every time. I usually go during lunch hours with my coworkers when the place is fairly busy but we always get attended to quickly by Victoria and Aaron. Sometimes we even see the owner and that's always a plus. They're really nice people We're a big fan of the beef and chicken koobideh. Both are always moist, flavorful and quite juicy. Nothing can go wrong with these two. Sometimes when we want a little bit of change we order the filet mignon kabob or the lamb kabob. Both are great meats as well. They season and marinate each meat perfectly. There's enough flavor for all to enjoy. Tadig (Persian Rice) is a special dish that we sometimes get from the restaurant during lunch hours. It's usually offered during dinner but we get to enjoy it during the day so it's a definite plus in our books. It's a Persian dish that serves the crunchy layer of rice that forms on the bottom of the pan with some ghormeh sabsi and gheymeh bademjan sauce that comes from their stew. It's delicious. I always enjoy this dish when the rice is soaked. Very tasty. Their shirazi of chopped up cucumber, tomatoes, onions and parsley always taste so refreshing. It's a little sour sometimes but it complements the yogurt dip, maust' khiar, very nicely. It's a good balance of the two. The yogurt dip is also very good with the bread they offer as an appetizer. A good replacement for the butter although I do like both. My favorite rice to order here are the ones with the dates in it or the cherry one. The plain rice is just as great but we like to have a variety of options to go for. There is so much to enjoy about this place. I love it every single time. My coworkers and I always seem to get major food comas right after and my friends have enjoyed it as well. read more

I ordered a Koobideh a maust musier and the gormeh sabzi. The dollar.maust and gormeh were ok not the best but ok. The koobideh on the other hand was HORRIBLE. Never in my life have i had a koobideh crumble when i cut into it. I really dont know if it was old or just not mixed well, but it had no flavor at all. Im so disappointed not returning.

My Shish kabob plate came out faster than expected, and I was almost as impressed with the salad as the saffron rice and actual kabob, which is tender and amazing by the way. Basically, you pick a drink from the refrigerator, and I let him talk me into trying hummus, and appetizer, which ultimately comes with cut flatbread. His take is less creamy than other restaurants, but the flavors are fresh, without garlic. Don't worry, the salad dressing is a fantastic creamy Italian style. All-in-all, I was enjoying every bite and pretty much ate everything, although I preserved some hummus to eat at home. The price was commiserate with the quality, and I suppose I'll try more when I'm around the area.

It could have been an extra plate, a free app to make up for the state of the restaurant or genuine hospitality. Regardless of what it was, we appreciated the gesture. I ordered the lamb skewer lunch special with salad instead of rice. My wife went with the chicken skewer. She said the rice portion was too large. The food was delicious. The prices were reasonable. The service was good.

I stumbled onto the Caspian Mediterranean Kitchen by accident. We were nearby to watch our…read moregrandson's performance in his first play at the Civic Center and had 2.5hrs between shows to kill. We drove around looking for a comfortable place with crystal & linen so we could feel catered to...but the surrounding eateries were just sad. Lotsa fast food and 3 star hole-in-the-walls. As we were preparing to leave Foothill Ranch we saw Caspian. It stood out...boldly. Indoor/outdoor seating, firelight accents, nice cars in the parking lot...we had to try it. Upon entry it was clear a large private event was taking place, and we fully expected to be turned away. The interior was beautiful, spacious, and appeared to have just been built. Everything looked brand-spanking new. Staff was scurrying amongst the very large party of guests, and it was clear they had recently arrived too. We were greeted with smiles and our request for seating in a quiet, out-of-the-way table was instantly granted. The 4-minute rule was honored despite the busyness of the engagement party going on in the next room and our server was warm and welcoming. We had time to kill and enjoyed some wine and appetizers, stalling placement of the food order for quite a while. Now understand, I can be a challenging customer because I have been the food service profession for decades. I can look at an item and tell you if it came from SYSCO, US Foods, Restaurant Depot, or some other popular source...and my familiarity can adversely impact my dining experiences. I tend to be critical of both the front & back of a restaurant (kitchen staff & servers) and this skepticism is magnified when I feel the need to be catered to. Yes...I'm that guy. Well during the hours we spent at Caspian, we were greeted by the owner Esie as well a manager, both who engaged us in brief conversation that was enjoyable and appreciated. Not so much that it became intrusive (like some places I've visited...once) and it was clear they were going above and beyond to make a meaningful first impression. Our server recommended a red wine that was perfect, all the appetizers and entrees were cooked properly, delicious and served like artwork. The eyes dine first so the hard look I give food when it's brought to the table, comes with expectation. Caspian did not disappoint. Something else I found exceptional about this place was the coffee. My wife and I are addicted to the stuff; both the coffee and cappuccino was so much better than the coffee we make at home we were stunned. We buy premium whole beans that we carefully mix, our Jura Capresso makes every kind of coffee drink and yet...the java served at Caspian head & shoulders above my best efforts. I am hopeful they will share the brand and source with me...I want that coffee every day!!! As you can surmise...with three people looking after us, we felt fully catered too. If you are a tough customer...if you scrutinize things like the crystal stemware, steak knife and water carried, if you know when your server is providing the ideal level of service (not stopping to check on you too often or disappearing for too long) and seek a dining experience in very elegant and comfortable surroundings, then do yourself a favor and go visit Caspian Mediterranean Kitchen on a day when you need to be treated right...very spoiled. This place has a certificate of excellence...not a commonality in the restaurant business and something the most discerning customer appreciates. You need to take an OCD approach to cleanliness and food handling to earn one of these certificates and it is clear the management and staff at Caspian treat every diner like a published food critic. That is rare. Go ahead...treat yourself...you'll return, even if it's a bit of a drive. Caspian Mediterranean Kitchen...they set the customer service bar so high...other restauranteurs need to charter a plane just to see it.
