the food here - incredible. the fish is the freshest quality and beats places like sake2me, ozen, aikan, and kura by a LONG SHOT. those places make me feel nauseous after eating their sushi, but daru has never made me feel that way and i'm certain it's due to the quality of their fish. i want to gatekeep this place so bad because i don't want influencers to blow up this place and ruin the quality but i must give credit where it's due. they deserve their success. i have been going here for years and they are so consistent. service is incredible. ambiance reminds me of a tucked away sushi shop that's unsuspecting to the naked eye but the best sushi, sashimi and nigiri I've ever had in my life. The food was good, which is the reason I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1. However, the wait time was frustrating. I ordered online and was quoted a pickup time, but the restaurant took about 50 minutes to prepare the order and it ended up being more than 20 minutes past the promised pickup time. The pickup time was pushed back once, and even after leaving and returning later, my order still wasn't ready. I understand that restaurants can get busy, but if orders are running behind, it's important to provide accurate estimates and communicate clearly with customers. As much as I want to gatekeep this place, I'm sharing because they deserve all the love and attention. First off, I love the theme of One Piece throughout the restaurant, helps me feel like I'm with my people! You're immediately greeted when you walk in and it was empty when we came in (Saturday around 4:30), but as we sat and ate, while watching Star Wars being played on their TV, more people came in. They all seemed to have a relationship already built with them, which was really nice to see because that means they have built trust within their community. This is a very intimate location with seating for approx 20 people but the food quality and variety can go toe to toe with much larger sushi restaurants. Today we went a variety of items including spicy garlic edamame, seared tuna, salmon carpaccio, and volcano roll to name a few. All items were very good and the fish all tasted fresh. As a bonus, Thursdays are buy one beer get one for $1!! You can also find different specials every day that may or may not be on the regular menu. This is a pretty good small "hole in the wall" sushi place in Bellflower. Not the best you'll fine but for the price point, it's not bad. The place is not that big and not meant for big parties. Parking can be a little tricky as they have a small lot for 3 cars to the right of the restaurant and some spots to the left next to the liquor store. As for the food: garlic edamame was a great way to start things off. The mixed tempura was surprisingly very good. The batter was light and not too oily. The other appetizers like the popcorn chicken and calamari rings were okay. The octopus and yellowtail carpaccios were on-point and very good. The tonkotsu ramen wasn't bad but they only give you thicker piece of chashu. I ordered a second side piece of meat. It does come with a full egg and the broth was good, not too heavy and the noodles were done just right. As for the rolls, they're decent...a little on the narrow side but had a good amount of fish and ingredients in each roll. Service was friendly and attentive. I would say this gives a good feel for small sushi spots. And when I say "small" I mean tiny. 8 tables TOPS. It's tucked in on Clark right behind the Southeast shopping center and the parking can be tricky. I think they should add a little takeout/pick up window so that the sit down patrons won't be constantly interrupted in such small quarters. Anywho, the rolls were pretty good. I went real basic B with a crunch roll and dragon roll. Eel was perfectly seared. Very good portion and I loved that they added the eel sauce on the side since it was a Togo order. The servers/cashiers were efficient and acknowledging. I added an order of tempura veggies when I got there and did not have to wait too long. The tempura was perfect and they had my favorite in the assortment (squash, carrot and onion) They also have some nifty anime decor. I remember going here when they just opened (quite a while ago and I don't think it was named the same) but the rolls were gigantic back then. I wish they still had them that way because it distinguished them from other sushi spots. Now it's just another sushi spot. The broth and noodles tasted like they were from a packet, and the broth came with one piece of chasu, a hard boiled egg (not even soft boiled), and like one bamboo shoot. For a grand total of $42. The edamame was amazing. Next time we want to try a spicy garlic edamame. The rolls were great. The spicy tuna and spicy mayo actually has a slight kick (golden tiger roll not pictured & truffle tuna). My friend devoured her Daru combo and said it was really good. And I tried pieces of the chicken teriyaki plate, but saved the rest as leftovers. Service was great. The staff was very attentive and check on us a few times. Everything came out very quickly. I took my son for his 20th bday dinner and he loved it-he said its better than Wokcano DTWN LA and few other spots that he frequents. ‼ W A R N I N G ‼ NOT KID FRIENDLY ‼‼ We've been to Daru several times as a family and have always had a good experience- until recently we were incredibly disappointed. We visited Daru yesterday with our 2 year old toddler, who is an extremely picky eater, so we brought a Happy Meal for her as we've done before. This time, however, the staff refused to let us bring it inside, even though it's never been an issue in the past. I understand restaurants have policies, but we were long-time customers, and this policy was never an issue before. It's disheartening that rather than being accommodating, especially for a small child, they turned us away. I asked the young lady that was our server if she could allow it this last time as a final one time courtesy and moving forward we will no longer bring outside food for her, but she would not budge and said "no." we explained again, that the food was just 4 nuggets and fries for our toddler and we, her parents, would be eating off the Daru menu but, again, she was firm on her stance. We always supported this establishment, but after this experience, we will never be back. It was disappointing to feel unwelcome after being frequent visitors at a "family-friendly place", I expected more understanding and flexibility. Instead we were shamed in a full restaurant in front of the other guests. EDIT: I just skimmed some reviews and see a common denominator of the young girl providing awful customer experiences for several people. how unfortunate for the restaurant's business.
