Darrel's Diner absolutely crushed it for me, and I have to shout out my waiter because he was freaking awesome. I came in because I saw they had a pot pie special, which is not something they normally have and that's what drew me in. When I got there they didn't have it anymore, but they were so accommodating and offered to make me something custom instead. Not just a small substitution either. A full custom hash that is not even on their regular menu. They made me a custom corned beef hash with home fries, plus hashbrowns smothered in melty cheddar and jalapeños, with a side of scrambled eggs. And listen, the eggs were so good I honestly do not know that I have had eggs that good anywhere. Fluffy, perfectly cooked, and just flat out delicious. The hash itself was amazing, hearty, and full of flavor, and the potatoes were cooked exactly right. And the hashbrowns? Better than Waffle House, and if you know, you know. Crispy where you want them, not greasy, and just the right texture. Service deserves its own mention too. I came in a little late in the day, close to when they were closing, and they were just as kind and welcoming as if I had come earlier. My waiter was friendly, attentive, checked on me at the right times without hovering, and made the whole experience even better. Over the last year we've had over a 100 breakfasts at Darrells. The food is what you would expect from a diner. Good,honest diner food. The kitchen will within reason modify items, but read the room. If the place is packed, it just might not be a good time for special requests. What makes this diner special is the front of house staff: Jenn, Amanda, Brian, and Eddie . These are seasoned professionals, unflappable, and each delightful in there own way. They work their asses off. There is always laughter, kind words, and shared stories. Please remember: if you can't afford to tip at least 20%, you really can't afford to eat out. i sure hope Darrell, (a gay Trumper republican??) recognizes what a great staff he has. My husband and I each ordered the country Benedict. The sauce was lumpy, and the eggs were well done. When I asked the server about the lumps in the sauce, she said the cook just didn't mix the powder well enough. I thought the powder? While passing through Lady Lake,Florida on a rainy day looking for antique furniture. We stumbled across a small storefront diner and quite to our surprise the food was considerably good. It is only open for breakfast and lunch. The wait staff were courteous and friendly serving mainly to an older crowd who were also very amendable. The restaurant has been in service to the community for four years and it looks like it will remain for many more. I enjoyed a plate filled with chopped Homestyled potatoes that were skillet fried and well seasoned. Served alongside two biscuits with sausage patties on top of them then placed atop of them scrambled eggs, all smothered with sausage gravy. Voilà the Mountain Scambler. For over ten minutes we were ignored completely after we entered Darrells for our very first visit. No one greeted us or told us where to sit. The few other patrons stared at us. Most seemed to be regulars the way the wait staff treated them. But us? We received no menus, flatware or even an offer of water. Instead, one waitress busied herself with wrapping flatware to finish filling a metal container. Another brought in an order from an outdoor table and dropped the menus of those customers into a slot next to a countertop appliance before turning in the order to the kitchen. And yet a third walked past our table several times to refill beverages at a table several down from ours and to leave a check for a foursome. Several minutes after we arrived another couple entered the diner and was greeted warmly, told to sit wherever they liked and given menus. At that point I asked my husband if we had suddenly turned invisible. I was disappointed that other reviewers had said that new customers were treated well here. We were literally about to just get up and leave when a server we hadn't seen before suddenly appeared at our table and, oblivious to how long we'd been waiting, cheerfully brought menus and asked what we'd like to drink. Because there were no soft drinks listed on the menu and the waitress didn't say what they had other than "Coke products," I stuck with water and my hubby chose iced tea, which he said was good but of which he was never offered a refill. After bringing the drinks our waitress asked if we were ready to order even though we'd only had a minute's glance at the menu, but my husband was hungry for a lunchtime breakfast, so after he ordered I just went with getting a burger with onion rings. The kitchen had no other orders to prepare so our meals were delivered fairly quickly and thus they were fresh and hot. Hubby reported that his meat lovers omelet was cooked perfectly. My burger was a bit on the well done side, but it was juicy and delicious, too. The onion rings were of the greasy side, but the onions were sweet and good. Only later did I regret eating them. Overall, we enjoyed our meals and would come here again. Just know that there is no team approach at Darrells where all the wait staff sees to the care of all the customers. Each table apparently has an assigned server and that server will not lift a finger to help the customers at a table that isn't theirs. And that can create difficulties for people who choose the wrong place to sit. read more

Yesterday I found out how the "chef" makes a western omelet. First he mixes the soggy onions and peppers and ham in the grill and fries all with the most deplorable cooking oil. Then he ladles out the powdered eggs and uses the same horrific oil He then takes the burned veggies and places them in between the eggs. He then puts the ham in between one third of the eggs. No ham until the last of the omelet is seen. Next he takes the home fries and kisses the on the grill which are served very cool Not even the middle of the potatoes are warm. The final serving is the soggy toast lathered with a sub standard margarine. Each time I try to give this independent restaurant another chance hoping they improved their cooks , I again am disappointed but never surprised. read more

Review Summary: Great diner with awesome staff and fast, delicious food. We came during a lunch rush and were able to get a table pretty quick. They have both indoor and outdoor seating available. We saw several dogs outside and the servers even gave a couple treats to the dogs. We ordered the burger, BLT and tuna melt. The bread they used for both the BLT and tuna melt was amazing. My dad said it was the best BLT he has ever had. Crisp bacon, fresh lettuce and tomato as well. My tuna melt came out hot, toasted and amazing. The portion sizes here are pretty big so I took half my tuna home. Lastly, the burger was thick, juicy and cooked perfectly to order. Fresh toppings and amazing crinkle cut fries. The menu is large and can accommodate picky eaters. I forgot to take a picture but they have pretty much everything you would want for lunch in a diner. We were in the area and looked up places to eat on yelp and darrells came up. It was 2:30 pm and they were closing at 3. We checked if we could come in and we were warmly welcomed. The staff was friendly and welcoming with a lot of bantering amongst the staff and the customers. We ordered the chicken quiche which came with potato salad and the Cuban which came with cole slaw. Not impressive at all with my breakfast meal. I order Scrambled Cheese Eggs with home fries and a side of ham. The cheese used was obviously something like Kraft Individually Wrapped Cheese, which is horrible and not really cheese. It certainly ruined 2 good eggs. The ham was OK, but not the best ham (Waffle House has better city ham---MUCH BETTER). The home fries were deep fried and probably frozen vs. fresh, and very bland. Home fries should be grilled with onions in my opinion. Unfortunately, I sat at the counter and could see in the cooking area. It was clean, however the cook who was making the pancakes and waffles dropped his spatula on the floor. Did he replace it? NO! Did he at least wipe it off? NO!! I was thankful that I did not order pancakes!!! The only good thing to report is the server. He did his job well. But I won't be back to this Darell's Diner or any of the other locations. read more
