Been here many times before and this place is typically great! But as of recently the food has been bland/okay and this time the restaurant was very warm inside and food was not great. Of the handful of items we ordered, only tasty item was their fried spring rolls. I ordered their Pad Thai, spice level 3, like I always do and without peanuts. My Pad Thai came out with peanuts, so I had to send it back (I'm allergic) and they happily remade the order and got a new one out fairly quick. So, I'll give credit where credit is due, but the dish was bland, sauce was 'sticky'/thick sauce and VERY spicy. Which is rare to their normal level 3 spice. After chugging multiple waters due to the warmth inside their restaurant on top of now burning up on the inside from my meal, I was ready to check out and get outside into the cool Flagstaff air. Might hold off on returning for a while but hope to return and for a much better meal/experience. Would like to note that the staff was very kind and attentive. Since arriving in Flagstaff, I keep getting recommendations for Thai food. Knowing there are handful around, some friends, and I just looked for one that was open after a hike. I am so glad we ended up at Dara! After walking into a neat atmosphere in downtown Flag, we were seated instantly by a friendly host who quickly brought out waters and menus. After telling her we were thirsty after our hike, she brought even more water and continuously refilled our glasses, which was very much appreciated. When the food started coming out, our experience just got better and better. Our table shared a few dishes that were excellent - some kind of marinated beef and a refreshingly unique soup, clearly crafted with experience and love. The shrimp Pad Thai was simple yet delicious. I came here for dinner on a Saturday night and it was empty inside but this place is great! The service was extremely fast. My friend and I split the spring rolls (half veggie and half shrimp) and I ordered the Panang curry with beef. I have very low spice tolerance sadly but I got the curry mild and it was actually within my limit unlike most other places! The food all tasted fresh and flavorful. There is a ton of colorful decor inside, from umbrellas hanging on the ceiling to a mural on the wall. I would definitely come back here. read more

A great place to come with friends, portions are good for family style or if you want to take left overs home. I tried the Thai tea with coconut milk (lactose intolerant) and the milk was not staying blended, a lot of separation. Lived the Tom Ka got a level 4/5, I didn't think it was too hot but my friend thought it was fairly spicy- wish it came with rice. The servers were great, attentive and very accommodating. read more

The servers are kind, and I absolutely love the interior! It's artistic, and it feels comfortable and cozy. Absolutely would recommend despite the lower rating! Dara Thai is one of my favorite places to visit when I'm in Northern Arizona, Flagstaff AZ. I typically always get the same thing although there is a large variety of options and dishes on their menu including vegan and vegetarian ones. Typically what I go for is the Tom car and the evil jungle princess. I like getting both of them a medium spice, it's great that they allow you to choose your spice option. There's plenty of seating in the eclectic and bright space, lots of traditional theme throughout. There's tucked away spaces as well as views of the main street. I still like this place, but I remember it being better when I was a kid. Went here for dinner with my group of 6 and we ordered the cream cheese wontons, Tom yum, Pad see ew, Pad thai, Evil jungle princess curry, Panang curry, and Pineapple fried rice. Everything was good, but just seemed like it lacked flavor or salt. Part of it could've been the spice levels (although we got our usual level 2/5), but I did have to add more fish sauce to the Tom yum because it tasted watered down. We still managed to finish all of our food so it wasn't bad overall, just fairly noticeable. Our server was pretty good, the younger guy with glasses and longer hair. The front room: empty. The main dining area: all but empty. One server, no other staff was visible. I think the server was also the cook. Nice guy, but absentee service. The food just wasn't good. The stems were still on the basil, the consistency was alien, and the flavor was just confusing. It was like someone had seen Thai cooking on TV and said, "How hard can it be?" We had to wait for silverware after being served our food. The water was clearly from the tap and at best I think they might have waved an ice cube at it. And after spending a day hiking, we were starving and in a decidedly forgiving mood. But this restaurant might as well have killed my grandmother. I was in the mood for Thai, and this is one of the few Thai places in Flagstaff that does not have unusual opening and closer hours. I was greeted by kind and welcoming customer service, and seated promptly! I ordered a Thai iced tea for my lunch, which was beyond tasty and rich in flavor! It made me happier and happier with each sip. The ambiance was relaxed and unique! For my appetizer I had fresh spring rolls and papaya! Salad! Both were very refreshing, filling, and nutritious! Now let's talk about the star of the show. The 'Evil Jungle Princess' with shrimp was off the chain! So much flavor, and fresh veggies too! Yummy! Ordered Togo order for Panang curry. I was initially reluctant ordering due to previous reviews, but did not have much option at 9pm. Parang curry is generally thick and flavorful. This one was soupy and something was missing. I would recommend them to try out this curry at a high star Thai restaurant. Rice was also not good quality. I would give a 2.5 but I'm rounding up of down. My reference for good Thai is in Cheng Mai, Bangkok, and Koh Samui. The good is OK but lacks the robust flavors of good Thai. The Massaman curry flavor was ok but the beef they added tasted like it was boiled and added right before serving. The Pad Thai was OK, but just now that special. The fresh spring rolls were good. They had a fish wash issue because the Saporo beer we carefully poured into the side of the glass kept foaming up like the was soap. They have a new glass and beer that didn't do that. read more

There's too many umbrellas inside the dining room. All over the ceiling, I think it's bad feng shui. It also looks cheap and overboard. Is this Thai culture? Overall the dishes were large, but I question a few on their taste: 1. Papaya salad tastes like fish, and I guess it's probably because it is partially made of fish sauce. But it's just too strong 2. Tom yum soup is not clear yellow broth with a bunch of herbs, it's instead brown and it seems like the taste is just salt.... Where's the authentic taste? Of the good, I think they made the mango sticky rice just right. Jasmine rice was good, and their Thai beers are delicious. Can't go wrong with stir fry veggies. Service could be better, someone was sweeping right next to our table while we were eating, we thought they were closing. Probably best not to sweep too since dust can get into food. read more

I only ever get two things when I go to a Thai restaurant: Thai tea and Pad See Ew. Those are my go-to's, because I really enjoy them. However, here, the Thai tea was a bit on the weak side. Kinda watered down, flavor-wise. And the Pad See Ew was a little lacking in overall sauce/sweetness. However the chewiness of the noodles was fun and enjoyable. So, overall, it wasn't the best experience, but it also wasn't the worst experience. The next time we're in Flagstaff, we'll try one of the other Thai restaurants in town and see how they compare. The atmosphere was nice, and the service was decent. It cost $60 for my son and I to eat there. I also had the coconut custard for dessert, which was kinda interesting. read more

Don't order the Drunken Noodles. I was very disappointed. I've made it at home and it was so much better. It was dry, almost tasteless, and the noodles rather hard. The staff might need some training (example, the small plates were not provided until asked with the appetizers, dinner plates weren't cleared before the dessert came out, etc.). We ordered the Sample Plate and enjoyed the fried wonton. Each dish can be catered to a spicy level between 0 to 5. We ordered the duck curry and a level 3 was good. The pad Thai was sweet and flavorful. The beef in the mussaman was way over cooked and difficult to chew. The shrimp thai suki did not disappoint! Dara Thai Restaurant is a full service, full menu Thai food eatery in Flagstaff with good flavor, reasonable prices and kind staff. Rounding up a trip to Flagstaff, this was the last meal we had here before traveling home. This was a perfect wrap up for hungry family and friends to enjoy a meal. The restaurant is actually well spaced with 2 rooms for dining plus a full bar area with additional tables. The decor is standard Taiwanese drapings, statues and such. The facility is large enough for a party or group but also has smaller tables for an intimate date. Located just south of the tracks near old town Flagstaff, it works for a nice getaway from the largely American foods and coffee shops filling the area. I ordered the Garlic with meat entrée (51) amd had it with pork. The flavors were excellent and the portion was large. It came with a cup of rice, and garnished with cilantro and cabbage. I also order chicken fried rice with chicken and veggies, which was likewise very tasty. The final item I enjoyed was the wonton soup with chicken, which was served in a flame heated collander bowl. Yummy. Other family and friends had pad thai, penang curry and more. Everyone said the dishes were spot on. For me, the only thing I need to do was ask for a bit more spice, which is pretty much standard for every Thai restaurant I go to. The prices were reasonable, and the service was good. read more

My cousin and I split the cream cheese puffs which were what you would expect, but still very tasty. Dara Thai has been my favorite for thirty years! I moved away ten years ago and while visiting for business, I could not wait to get there for dinner! I got there at 5:30 pm, and sat myself as the sign requested. There were quite a few tables available, but they had not been bussed, which seemed weird because it wasn't that busy. I sat in the only clean one around, then waited 25 minutes (I know because I checked my watch) before anyone even acknowledged me. A waitress finally approached and ran to get me a menu, and a young man came up behind her to take my order. I hadn't even opened the menu yet. He asked if I wanted anything to drink so I asked for a glass of Pinot Noir, and water. The water came right away, along with the request for my order. I wanted one entree to eat there, and one for take-out. I quickly ordered and he hurried off. Fifteen minutes later a different young man came with my glass of Pinot. I took a sip, and almost gagged. It was like fermented grape juice, it was awful. I tried again, still disgusting so I pushed the full glass to the other edge of the table. The young man came then with my dining order: pineapple curry with chicken. I was still excited to eat great Thai food, and opted to just drink water. I asked for a napkin, utensils, and more water. He hurried off. I tasted a few bites with the large serving spoon since that's all I had, and it was SO SALTY! I mean, really really salty. I dumped some of the rice into the dish hoping to cut the salt a bit, to no avail. Still no utensils, no napkin, no water, and I waited. I finally walked out at 6:45 pm without eating, or drinking since no one ever came back to the table. Ever. I'm still in shock. That dinner was to be the highlight of my business trip. read more

My partner who grew up in the area insisted we come here while we were on our recent trip. He has talked so long about how good the food is and I can finally understand why! You cant go wrong with thai food in general but knowing for how long they have been around is a teastament in itself to the quality of not only the service but the food (my partner hasnt been back to the area in 10 years!) . Passing through town and Thai sounds good. Oh look, amongst all the typical dishes Dara has one called Arizona Heatwave. Naming a dish after your state might indicate it's something you take pride in. Including the phrase "heatwave" must mean it's spicy. Describing it as a "red curry" must mean it tastes of, oh I don't know, red curry? If you dear reader were to think these things, I can relate. I did. Instead I was served a culinary crime against. Instead of being vibrant, rich, and fragrant what was described as a red curry was brown and tasted vaguely of... well, brown. But only a light brown at that. At least it was salted brown? The mixed vegetables included baby corn. As fresh baby corn is hard to come by, it was the canned variant. Adding an expected taste of, you guessed it, fresh baby metal can. So in conclusion, layering of flavors was achieved by the kitchen. Those flavors were light brown and metal can. If that's your thing, enjoy! Gave it two stars as thus far I am not experiencing any violent pangs of food poisoning. That's my bar for two stars. read more
