Despite having tons of open seats at the bar and the very nice gentleman at the gate calling up and them radioing him back saying they could accommodate me without a reservation, when I got to the top after taking a shuttle up I was told they would not accommodate me. In the end they let me buy a bottle and a snack and I was able to sit outside and enjoy the phenomenal view. The wine was great, food was good and everyone I interacted with was very kind. Lesson learned, don't show up without a reservation, but it was worth it. Still feel strongly there was plenty of room to give me a tasting given the bar was nearly empty the entire time I was there. read more

Service is a bit slow for the tastings, but pours are generous and quality of wine is slightly nicer than other local vineyards. Beautiful location! Probably the highest point in Paso Robles. The view alone is worth the trip to the top. Be aware that it gets very windy even if it's a hot summer day. Apparently the wind helps the wine somehow. We ordered a bottle of the Chardonnay and immediately claimed one of the lawn chairs. Booked a reservation for the rave reviews. Honestly the views and the secluded, upscale ambiance were nice. The servers were truly attentive but were rather slow. We were celebrating a birthday and although it was just the two of us, we couldn't get a fireplace seat since they were reserving it for larger groups. 15 min later a party of two sat in the empty fireplace seat next to us. If the host gives you that excuse, call him out of his BS. I know almost nothing about wine but I could somewhat taste the uniqueness of their wines. The 100% cab was memorable. However, the tasting price was the most I've ever paid and wines/service/venue fell way, WAY short in terms of value. It's worth visiting as a tourist, but it's a hard sell to be a return customer. read more

I expected a corporate feel and some less than stellar wines, but Daou absolutely delivers for its location/ambiance, the quality of service, the food, and the overall experience. The Daou brothers understood what it would take to turn their winery into an institution, and they pulled out all the stops; the view is the highest and best in the area (they use Mercedes luxury vans to take you from the lower parking lots), the staff is well-trained and knowledgeable, and the wines were very good. Tastings are not cheap ($50), but there's no feeling of a cattle call here, and no one is hurrying you off the mountain. If you're looking for that big Napa-type experience with all the professionalism (shout out to Gabriel) and beauty that a winery can muster, Daou is worth the price of admission. We learned this winery has some of the most amazing views, so we decided to stop by to check it out. Upon arrival, we were asked if we had reservations, which we didn't. Immediate bad vibes. The hostess seemed less than friendly, nor did she offer options, so I told her we were just going to look around. That didn't seem to please her, so she said "just make sure you don't sit anywhere, because everything is reserved". We walked in and back out almost immediately. On our way out, we thanked her and her two colleagues, and they all looked back at us and simply ignored us. Such a pompous group of employees! I'm writing this review under my husband's account. My girlfriends and I had a weekend planned to visit some of the fantastic wineries in Paso Robles and DAOU was on our list. In years past, my husband and I have always enjoyed taking in the wonderful scenery, as well as sampling and buying their wines. It has always been a "must stop" during our trips to the area. That ended this past weekend. We were told by the greeting person that we would be able to view the property but could not stay. They had us park our cars at the bottom and told us to walk up the hill. As we started walking, they gave us the green light to take the car up the hill to view the property. When driving up the hill, we were met by the most obnoxious, rude, and condescending parking attendant I've ever encountered in my life. He spent the better part of two minutes yelling at me like I was trash, forcing me to turn my car around and leave. On a small entryway, he made me so nervous that it took me a moment to gather myself and turn the car around, which ended up holding up traffic. He was screaming so loudly that I was shaking and was concerned I was going to wreck. He would not let me turn around at the top where there was more room and where it was SAFE. I could live ten lifetimes and will not find myself returning to DAOU. Nor will my family purchase another drop of wine from them. Looking at the reviews, it's obvious the owner of the company doesn't even care about losing business or hiring respectful staff. read more

Wine with a view! Our experience at DAOU was enjoyable. This winery has to be one of the nicer ones in Paso Robles. It's a mountaintop estate with a beautiful panoramic view. The tasting room is elegant and the employees are all so helpful. The tasting is more on the pricier side, $40 tasting fee, but the pours are generous. Rather expensive, but worth it and I'll come back here again. After our tasting, I bought a glass of cabernet sauvignon and enjoyed it and definitely soaked in that view on their cute chairs. My husband and I met a couple from the Bay Area who were also in Paso Robles celebrating their wedding anniversary. We stayed for a while and enjoyed the views right before sunset. It was peaceful and relaxing. This is a must stop winery if you visit Paso Robles. read more

I went there for the first time with a party of four. I had a reservation for 3 pm expecting a long drive from Redondo Beach. But the journey was much faster than anticipated and we arrived at noon and the staff happily moved our reservation up so we didn't have to wait. It was a beautiful day (as are the surroundings) and we were seated outside. Obviously dog friendly, several other guests brought along their canine friends. The wine tasting was really nice and definitely not rushed. We opted for small appetizer plates to accompany the wine. We received a wine list for purchase and were not pressured in the slightest to buy. But, of course, we did and really enjoyed our purchase which we drank at the location. I have to say the experience was wonderful and well worth the long drive (for us) to get there. It's in a beautiful location and I found all the staff to be highly accommodating, friendly and professional. On top of the experience were the great photo ops. The grounds are gorgeous. There's no doubt about that. But the $45pp price for a tasting is excessive. Especially when the wine isn't particularly great. Then the wine is also very expensive - unless, of course - you buy into their wine club. Yeah sure. Also, why is the Rosé not available in normal sized bottles but it's in the tasting flight? So the only way to get a bottle is to buy 3 liters? Seems weird to me. Don't recommend. read more

Daou Vineyards! What a gem tucked up in the mountains of Paso Robles. I made my visit back in June and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with their property, hospitality, and everything in between. We did make a reservation (don't be that group that tries to get in without one, and when they turn you away you get mad about it). Lets start with the property. Daou is about a 5-10 minute drive off of the main street. While driving up you are welcomed by the rolling mountains. We found parking right outside of their tasting room and headed in. After we checked in with the hostess we were greeted by a glass of their rose. Nice touch on a warmer summer day. We were then seated on their patio in a nicely shaded area. The world seems to slow down as you are sitting there admiring the beautiful views of Daou Vineyards. The patio/seating areas made us feel like we were at a resort. There were larger tables for larger parties as well as lounge chairs with umbrellas on the outskirts of the patio. I'm sure everything inside is awesome as well, but I didn't explore too much due to covid restrictions. Lets get to the good stuff. We were greeted by our friendly server that walked us through our tasting. We went through the whole flight with a few extra pours on the house. I didn't really take notes on what we had so sorry for that lack of info. But we did get a few pours of their Soul of a Lion. Sooooo I'm not going to complain about that! On top of that we did have a pour or two of one of their clones and their Eye of the Falcon (which I haven't tried till this trip). We also ordered a charcuterie board to snack on during our visit. Hands down that charcuterie board was worth every penny. If you are in Paso Robles I would highly recommend making a reservation for Daou Vineyards well in advance and give them a visit! You will not be disappointed. They are literally and figuratively on a higher level! HAHA! read more

My wife and I were excited to visit this place after hearing all the hype the last few years. First, the views do match the hype. They are spectacular. The wines were the big miss for us though. We did five tastings. Curiously, the server told us two of them weren't quite ready yet and needed a few more years in the bottle. An additional one we were told wasn't liked by 80% of people who tried it. While I appreciate the honesty here, it was weird being presented mostly subpar wines by their own standards. This is one of the top 3 wineries I've been to. The location is up the hill with a beautiful view. You need to make reservations and they have a shuttle service so you don't have to drive after wine tasting. I'm not a chardonnay drinker but DAOU makes a great bottle. They also offer food. Please note - my review is only regarding the incredibly poor and horrible communication and nothing to do with their wines. Personally, the service has caused me to never want to purchase from them, but that's a personal choice regardless of their reputation, quality, or flavor. Too many wines in this world to purchase wine from companies that provide poor service. We planned a business trip to the central coast and my wife really wanted to go to this winery which was an hour and a half away from where we were staying. When looking out more than two weeks, they were sold out on reservations, which we understood. So, we asked about coming by and purchasing wines. We were encouraged to come by and welcomed us to make the drive and stop by. "Of course, we can accommodate that, and we would be happy to have you visit". We made the drive on a Saturday morning, arrived around 11:30 only to be turned away. We were told that reservations were sold out and that their tasting room was too busy to accommodate a purchase. Here's the thing, we made multiple calls to make sure we did not get conflicting information. Then we also called after being rejected and were told "Of course you can come buy and purchase wines". When we shared that we were just turned away, then we were told, well, maybe it's because there's no parking. In the end, we were given multiple "I'm sorrys". But here's the thing, I'm sorry doesn't mean a darn thing if you keep doing what you're supposedly "sorry" about. In the end, it doesn't matter who you are, service makes or breaks customer relationships. Consider this broken. read more

After a weekend of wine tasting, Daou was our last stop. This was also by far the best view of our wine tasting trip. You are high up over a valley of vineyards in all directions. There is plenty of seating for you to sit on comfortable lounge chairs and overlooked this magnificent Valley. There is a wine club member section that is covered by a velvet rope which has the best views which overlooks the valley and all angles. My favorite of the wines was the Cabernet which Has strong tannins and considerable complexity starting with dark cherries. We stayed at the winery for a few hours and as the cabinet opened up over approximately 35 minutes the strength of the tannins mellowed allowed and this made the cabernet more palatable. The beautiful Daou Vineyard Estate is perched on a hilltop a short drive outside Paso Robles. We visited on a rainy day during Christmas week and the staff was friendly and helpful while sweeping rain water off the covered patio. One thing that disappoints is that they don't allow outside food because they have a kitchen. You can order a charcuterie board to pair with your wine and if you're a member, you get a free small version of it. Daou reminds me of the rules and regulation of Napa, which is a turn off for me. Daou is known for their Cabernet Sauvignon and they only had one of their Cabs on their tasting menu. I wanted to try more of what they are known for...everything else I tasted was not to my liking. Overall, I was a fan of the 16' Cab and picked up a bottle, $85. Beautiful property, average tasting menu, and annoying rules. Hands down the prettiest grounds in paso! Perched on a hilltop you get the best view while sipping some fun wine and enjoying great food. They were packed on a Saturday afternoon, reservations highly recommended to get good spot. We made reservations and got seated in the comfy couches for a nice sit down tasting. They are kid friendly :) Fee is $40 (on the pricier side compared to other paso wineries) waived with 3 bottle purchase. Includes 5 wines, one white and 4 reds. Our server was great and she was kind to let us try an extra white. The parking lot is small so we were directed to park into a remote parking area where a "party bus" would take us to the tasting room. We didn't even wait 10 seconds and a fancy Mercedes Limousine picked us up! How very cool! I have enjoyed the $20 Daou Cabernet that you can buy at Costco and $16 Chardonnay at Smith's, however the wines on the tasting menu were pretty pricy. We didn't really enjoy them as much. Chardonnay and Pinot noir were decent but definitely not the price tag that came with it. We ordered Mezze plate that included a variety of Mediterranean dips and pita. This is pretty much the creme de la creme of the 300 Vineyard Estates in Paso. As you can tell by previous pictures by others, this place sits on a very tall hilltop and the views are amazing as well as the wine tasting facility that sits on the hilltop. My wife and I were here on Wednesday (6/23) for a 10:00 am reservation. Please be sure to make reservations at least 4 weeks in advance. They do not allow random drive up visits as this is one of the most popular wine tasting vineyards in all of Paso right now. Also they do not allow large groups to sit at one gathering. They will split large groups up. It makes sense at this place and I'm glad they do it this way. It makes for a more intimate experience. We were seated at a nice small table and serviced by Gabriel. He was very knowledgeable and we sampled the higher end wines. I believe we sampled 6 but did get to sample another new release cab that was not on the tasting menu. Gabriel really knows his wine and explained everything clearly so even a novice could understand the variety of the wines they offer and sample. I was already a fan of their cabs before coming here but came away as a fan of some of their other varietals. Because of this great experience, I left with 12 bottles of varietals that I did not know existed previous to their cabs. One last thing to mention, they do offer a really nice cheese and charcuterie board with the accouterments. I wish we would have done that and I would definitely do that the next time I visit. If you are visiting pass a Robles you have to visit DAOU. It is a do not miss. Every single wine we tasted was just excellent and unique. On top of that the grounds are just gorgeous and the views incredible. The staff were wonderful- welcoming, knowledgeable and gracious. To have such a great wines, atmosphere and staff, eventually you're going to experience the downsides of this... it is crowded, large and a bit commercialized feeling. We visited on a Sunday. If you do not have a reservation you will be lucky to get a seat and most likely have to park way down in the vineyards. There is a shuttle service driving people up and down the hill which is nice. We were able to stand at the tasting bar and walk around with our glasses of wine. We did nab a couple of chairs at the yard's edge for a moment to enjoy the views.
