Nice little find on our way back from Moro Bay. A small little shop in what looked like a deserted strip mall, it was a pleasant surprise. We were the only customers there so the service was excellent. The food came fast and I saw the food cooked fresh. As for the food, three of us had the Gyros and they were good. Buffalo seasoning on then fries and tots is really good. Garlic fries were so so. Super strong garlic but no much flavor beyond that. Mom had the patty melt and she was not impressed. Lacked flavor. I guess burger didn't have any seasoning. Now the frog legs.... I mouthed to the lady behind the counter to send over an order of frog legs... (to mess with my family and I was curious too). She got it and brought them out quick. I'll just say it.... They were good. Tastes like chicken! Seasoning was good. I'd go back if I was in the area. One thing to know. It's pricey. One of the best BBQ and comfort food spots in SLO county (at least in my opinion)! I can't believe I'm just now getting around to writing a review for them as I've been here quite a few times and each time it's just as wonderful and delicious as the time before!!! Dan's Grub Shack is a total local's spot and in a somewhat abandoned parking lot but don't let that deceive you...This little, dare I say, hole in the wall is a foodies paradise! Plus, there is always a ton of parking available. :) Their pulled pork sandwich is freaking amazing and my husband absolutely loves(!!!) their cowboy burger with bacon, onion rings and BBQ sauce. This place has all the fixings for a good, hearty meal. The service is quick and everyone working is always friendly, patient, and helpful! Wow, is this place a find. Dan has created a menu from guest favorites and his imagination, that will keep you coming back for Good Grub. While not actually a "shack", the restaurant is cozy and I'm told often has a wait. It's worth the wait. We had a Macaroni Bacon Cheeseburger, BBQ Beef Brisket Sandwich, and the kids' meal hamburger. The sandwiches as good as they sound (yes, even the kids' meal hamburger was very well prepared). Dan was on hand and a very friendly guy. He'll help you with your order and make you realize you are supporting a family-owned business. We were back in Atascadero today and this time we intentionally sought out Dan's. Like our first visit, it was terrific, and we had a great late-afternoon dinner. First, service was awesome. Our server was incredibly friendly, welcoming both us and our dog, bringing her a big bowl of water along with our glasses. Then, she made sure we could order a special beef patty for her as well. We appreciate a place with a patio that not only allows dogs, but serves them as well. A+ for service! I ordered the brisket BBQ sandwich, no onions, and my wife ordered the kids grilled cheese and fries. My sandwich was huge, and prepared perfectly! The brisket was finely shredded and juicy, with cheddar cheese and just enough BBQ sauce on it to be delicious. (Also had BBQ sauce on the side.) The bread was soft and hearty. I enjoyed every bite. My wife's grilled cheese was served on thick slices of white bread with plenty of cheese. The fries were delicious as well, battered and fried so they were extra crispy. All in all, a terrific meal! The patio is small, only 2 tables just outside in the concrete hallway; nothing fancy. We were happy that it meant we could have our dog with us. Our server paid great attention, though as soon as we arrived, several other cars sent patrons inside the restaurant. We've had two great visits here and we will for sure be back! read more

Did a yelp search for lunch and found Dan's the Grub Shack. Wow Dan and his staff were super friendly. Everything on the menu sounded good. I went with the BBQ brisket sandwich. It was delicious, meaty and not over sauce. The fries were crispy and yummy. My sandwich was big enough that I shared it with my husband. My son got the lids cheese burger and it was good size. Seeing some solid reviews on Yelp, my friends and I decided to try out Dan's The Grub Shack. There is plenty of parking outside the strip mall that the restaurant is in. The restaurant itself is pretty small on the inside and out, but has a lot of decorations on the wall which add a bit of character. It was empty when we got there, so it was a pretty quiet ambiance. The customer service was great, we were greeted as we got in, and they happily checked in on us several times. The issues we had with Dan's The Grub Shack come from the food, which was really a major let down. The Yelp reviews and photos look great, but what we got did not look or taste great. My friends and I ordered their Macaroni Bacon Cheeseburger and BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich. The Mac and cheese in the burger did not have much flavor, the patty was very thin, over cooked, and overly seasoned, and the bread did not pair very well. The BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich had similar problems, and didn't have much flavor. We were really bummed with our experience and although the customer service was good, the food was just not it. This is our second time getting Dan's grub shack. Last time I tried the Mac and cheese burger. It was good but way too much cheese for my liking. I thought I would never say that. I thought there was going to be more than just the patty and cheese. It just tastes like a cheese burger. This time I got a cheese burger and fry. My husband got chicken strips, French fries and a side of onion rings on the side. The food was okay. Very basic nothing special. The fries are amazing. They seem to be triple fried. That are delicious. My husband said his chicken strips taste like frozen chicken strips. The food is also very overpriced for the quality. We paid almost $65 for this. Might be back for the fries. I had heard for years that Dan's Grub Shack served great food so my wife and I finally decided to give it a try - and I am so glad we did. I ordered the Ortega Cheeseburger (full 1/2 pounds of fresh ground beef) grilled perfectly with grilled onions and wife ordered the patty melt, also cooked perfectly. We also ordered the seasoned fries which are hand-cut and fresh. The menu is extensive and our server was great! I cannot believe we found this amazing place. My family/friends and I visited Pismo Beach for the weekend and decided to yelp some lunch. Everyone saw pictures of the mac and cheese burger so we drove to this amazing hole in the wall. Food - 10/10!!! I wasn't super hungry so I ordered a side salad, 1/2 order of fried artichokes and onions rings. SO DELISH!! Everything was well seasoned. It was the best friend artichokes I ever had. I LOVE beer battered onion rings, but this place even seasons the batter on top! They also make their own ranch and it was perfect. Best place for crunchy French fries and Pastrami!! I had been craving deli fries for days!!! Previously I went to A-Town Diner and the fries I received were "alright." I would recommend Dan's over A-Town any day of the week. Prices are kind of high, but worth every penny. You want good food..You'll pay for good food. Also, The manager (Who I assume might actually be the owner) was very nice when I started feeling ill and gave my husband a cold water for me. He didn't ask any questions. A friend who works nearby recommended this as "best brisket in the county" and they were so right! We had it as a loco moko special, it was positively delicious. Lots of appealing other options, the regular hamburger assortment, but also less common things like frog legs!! We'll have to go back for that alone :-). Seriously, this isn't easy to find, hidden at the back of a mostly abandoned mall, but it's right off the San Anselmo 101 freeway exit, and well worth a detour. This place is no joke. The burgers are full of imagination and character. When's the last time you thought that about a menu? Not only is the menu well thought out but it's well executed. I like to at least pretend like I am trying hard to eat healthy the majority of the time, so I've avoided this spot up until now. Yeah, they have salads. I know. We finally stopped by for lunch today, and can see why they are popular. Dan and another gentleman greeted us right away, and were super friendly. I can see why they have so many loyal regulars (which the place soon filled with as we perused the menu). They treat everyone walking in like a old friend. The menu is huge, first of all. Kind of overwhelming! But not in a bad way . We opted to share a basket of the tater tots, which came out hot and perfectly crunchy on the outside without being at all greasy. My husband had the pulled pork sandwich with slaw, and I had the New Yorker burger (with krau, swiss, thousand island, and house made pastrami). The portions are HUGE, first of all. And it's a good thing that they put entire paper towel dispensers on the tables, because you will need to make full use of them. My husband enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich, especially once he put the pineapple slaw into it. My pastrami sandwich was a big goopy mess, but a very tasty mess with tons of cheese, kraut, and pastrami. After eating half of it, I am in need of a nap and probably a Lipitor. No regrets, though! Second time eating here for me, first time for my boyfriend, umpteenth time for my son. Portions are enough to provide 2 meals, something I count on when I eat out. Menu has a decent variety. They offer significantly more than just fried food. The food is flavorful and filling. Both times there was one person serving customers and appeared to be one cook. Today was Dan, the owner, and last time was a woman. They're great people! Friendly and just really nice. The Shack is small but that's ok. There's enough room for everyone. I can't tell you how much joy this meal gave me. The most savory and delicious burger you can imagine. They also have a secret burger sauce that is more savory than your tradition sauce you would find elsewhere. It is incredible and makes the burger unique and special. I'd eat here once a week if I could, but would need to get in a good 4 mile run first so I could treat myself.
