Sandwiches are not normal here but they are fantastic. Had a chance to check out this place and the ambiance was really cool which is what caught my attention at first. Tried the Monte Cristo and it was not heavy with frying oil which is a great! The jam it came with matched the savory of the meat inside perfectly. A very solid sandwich, wish it came with a side of fries or chips though but that was extra it looks like. After wards I saw they had homemade hand dipped ice cream bars and thought I would try one. It was AMAZING and so good. The table next to me as asking about it and hopefully they got one as well later. The ice cream was really smooth and not over sweet, the nuts on the bar that I got were the perfect texture. The size of the bar was pretty hefty as well, almost good for sharing after a meal there. My wife and I grab lunch here 2-3times a month. It's conveniently located downtown and next to Ancient Owl. I love the pastrami sandwich on rye bread and we share fries. Burgers are good too and so is the fried chicken sandwich. Decent beer on tap, includes CaliSqeeze, Wild Fields and Figueroa Mtn. Sit outside on a nice day and enjoy the breeze! I got the porchetta sandwich and my wife got the Turkey and Tot sando from the breakfast menu. We also split a bowl of fries. The portions were good- the sandwiches were big! My porchetta sandwich was tasty but very messy to eat with the amount of pesto and lemon caper sauce. In the end, a little too much caper flavor for me, that's one thing I would change. Colony has a parking lot in the back of the restaurant, which may be easier to access considering there is construction on El Camino. - If you get there at opening time there typically is not a line but otherwise the line can be rather long. I suggest ordering on the website ahead of time and giving yourself 20 minutes for pick up. It was nice to stroll in and grab my to go order without having to wait in line. There are also many options to choose from when you order online such as type of bread and condiments. It's nice to have such a large selection while ordering. - I was able to fill my reusable yeti at the soda station and my all of my food was wrapped in paper and placed in a paper bag to-go. This place has a number of things going for it, but the first is the guy I kind of assumed was the manager--Justin. It turns out he's NOT the manager, but he's probably a strong reason this little sandwich shop with a great downtown Atascadero location has a great chance at thriving (if they aren't already). I'll come back to Justin in a second, but don't forget him... Layout is simple and obvious, seating has excellent options (unless it's raining, maybe, in which case there are only two tables inside) that are nicely separated, menu is straightforward, not too narrow, not too broad. And the quality was refreshingly good! My "Morty" was what basically an "Italian", but really just a simple, well-balanced, nicely executed and just slightly elevated ham and cheese sandwich (sorry if that offends the menu-maker, but it's a good thing--NO ONE does good basic sandwiches, and I'd far rather get a well-executed simple sandwich than a badly executed attempt that reaches too far!). My wife's tuna salad sandwich was similarly simple, maybe light on the tuna salad, heavy on lettuce--but good! Fries? Simple fries? $4 and the best fries I've had in years. Somebody cares. Is it a sign? And the prices were quite reasonable. The clientele on a Tuesday at about 11:30am was mixed and obviously happy to be there, clearly some new customers, some returning--a great sign. And, Justin. He said hello and welcomed us in the moment we entered the space. He was polite, informative, proactive and friendly. That was different, unexpected, welcome. I often think (as a lot of us do) that customer service is just a memory of the old days when people cared, when businesses, workers and owners/managers alike intuitively understood that true customer service is not an extra, it's not something that can be cut due to costs, something that is second or third string to paying your staff as little as you can get away with. Nope, it's right at the top, whether you know it or not. And those who do know it, the scattered and isolated few, will see results. Customer service is about relationships, about telling people they care--and nothing is more valuable to the customer than that. Justin told me he's always "on", whether at work or not. Someone please recognize that value, if you haven't already, and then apply it--liberally. Someone--including Justin, starting with Justin--needs to KNOW this value is a real and present danger to the mediocrity that has crept into our lives like a layer of cold nacho cheese over potential value in every nook and cranny. All that (potential) value is really there, but it doesn't get fed, recognized, celebrated, leveraged. Eat here, enjoy it, say hi to Justin, thank the cooks for good food and caring, thank your lucky stars you found just a little bit of sunshine. Here's to the Justins of the world--maybe there's hope. (Oh, by the way, if it troubles you that Justin is the star of this review, even though I also said the place is good, you should ask yourself what's wrong with this world that someone who cares made such an impression and then look around and see what a difference there might be if more of us cared.) read more

The $3 up charge for the tiny gluten free roll that the sandwich was built on-- nothing good about punishing people with allergies. Poor service and quality. It was my first time here and I heard it's a popular local spot. I ordered the fig sandwich and I waited over half an hour before I asked about my order. The buzzer they gave me never turned on, and it turns out it's because they never put my order in. I waited a couple more minutes and then asked for a refund, and somehow my sandwich was magically ready. The sandwich itself wasn't that great. The staff didn't seem like they cared and they weren't apologetic at all. Definitely will be my first and last time here. read more

first off, I almost never eat bread but I saw the HOT MESS RUBEN in their menu and decided it was time to give it a try. WOW! This is THE BEST HOT PASTRAMI SANDWICH EVER! I dont like sauerkraut so I leave that off but this is a seriously good big sandwich . I usually have the Portola Salad which is also FABULOUS but the Hot Mess Ruben has been a game changer for me. Wanted to love this place. But the dip wasn't really a dip; thick slices of meat that really should have been in a roast beef sandwich. That's an opinion so ymmv. The salad came out of a bag, which we knew, because the lettuce was old and melted (yes goopy lettuce), which is a health hazard. And the soup was overly salty because we got soup that had been left in a pot too long and was overly reduced. Maybe it was an off day. But it was really not good. When we returned the salad and showed them the lettuce was old and goopy we didn't get an apology or anything. We paid the bill in full and ate what was edible (ie wouldn't make us sick) and left. Came here and got the Get Figgin with it and it was actually very tasty, the Dutch crunch roll was yummy. The whole area is very cute, kid friendly and lots of shade. I wasn't blown away, it was pricey, two sandwiches (no sides) and 2 beers was 50$ with tip. I wish they included a side with the sandwich, the pricing would have made more sense. We came here on my birthday a couple weeks ago and not that it was bad, I just really expected more and really really really wanted to love it. Blackened fish sando was okay. Served on a delicious bun and plenty of fixings, but seriously where's the fish? One measly little piece the size of a chicken finger is no where enough. Only half of the bites taken from this sandwich had fish, such a bummer. The jalapeño coleslaw served on the side was odd. It definitely had a jalapeño forward flavor, which I liked, but it just seemed to be missing something. We were very much looking forward to the duck fat fries but these were the most disappointing. These things couldn't have been soggier. It wasn't for the fact of them sitting out before they were brought to our table, because they were piping hot. The flavor was spot on with the orange zest and rosemary but I just couldn't get past the fact they were so limp and soggy. I will say the colony sauce for dipping was very delicious. As for the Reuben, this was the saving grace. Very delicious Pastrami and the pickles were perfect (guessing they are pickled in-house?). Would definitely order this again if we find ourselves back here. On a side note: service wasn't terrible but just weird. Although friendly, we did notice a few things that could use improving. They didn't take our table number when they brought us our food, in fact we left and drove around the front to head back home and noticed that even ten minutes after we left it was still sitting on the table. I can't imagine that anyone would take the initiative of sitting at that table, assuming that someone is already sitting there and waiting for their food. When brought out a menu item that deemed fork worthy, a remark was made from the server that we needed a fork, yet never came back with one. Countless times we watched the servers grab dishes to clear from the bus bins to make room for more, every time they walked by. However, something that was never touched was the trash. We went back today to what is now called Colony Sandwich Co. and split a "Gettin' Figgy With It" sandwich and the duck fries. Yum yum! Gettin' Figgy is such an awesome sandwich, very gourmet. It has three distinct flavors that marry together perfectly - salty ham and turkey, sweet fig jam spread, and bitter arugula greens to balance everything out. The sandwich was big enough that my wife and I split it with the duck fat fries and filled up nicely. The duck fat fries, what can I say? You gotta try these things. Thin cut, fried to a crunchy snap in the rich duck fat, and seasoned to perfection with rosemary. No, this isn't low calorie or low cost dish, but go ahead and splurge. You'll thank me. 52 minutes... how long I waited for a reuben sandwich and duck fat fries. Reuben was okay, but definitely had more sauerkraut than pastrami. Duck fat fries were almost cold, so that was upsetting.
