Self service coffee station of my dreams
    Stephanie B.

Danish and Donuts (previously Danish and Donut) is a no-frills cash-only donut shop, like the hole in the walls you'd find in downtown San Francisco, except on Hwy 12 in Sonoma. I've only been here on weekend mornings, so I can't speak for donut quality or freshness outside of these peak days/hours. But the donuts I've had from here are my favorite in all of wine country. Sometimes they do sell out of a lot of options, so I suggest arriving before 10am. Don't worry if they sell out of your favorite, just try something new! That's how I discovered two of my new favorites, the glazed buttermilk bar and the cinnamon twist. I like that the donuts are not too sweet. I also am obsessed with the self-serve coffee station. It's not fancy coffee, it's simple donut shop coffee. It pairs perfectly with the donuts. I would avoid the pastries (non-donuts) as I think they are made from frozen and not made in house. About the service: this is a no-frills place. I know that doesn't make it ok to be rude. I personally don't feel anyone has been rude to me here. If lack of smiling and asking how you're doing today will bother you in donut shop customer service, this might not be the place for you. I am ok with that kind of service in this scenario. It's donuts. How many questions are there really? Just point to what you want and done. If you need someone to explain all the donuts to you, for instance, I'd suggest somewhere different. And if you come in often enough, eventually you might get a smile :)

My favorite place in Sonoma for fresh donuts. They have all the classics I love, from Apple Fritter, to Old Fashioned chocolate and coconut.

You go all the way back to the deli, grab a paper and pen and fill out the sheet on how you want your sandwich. Then place it on the counter and they stick it in line. Sandwiches take a few minutes especially if you want it hot or toasted. If you want a burrito or some special not on the paper, just announce it to them and they'll make a paper and put it in line. They put a ton of meat of the sandwiches. We were very pleased. I went with the cucumber which was 0.50 extra so my sandwich was $15.99. My husband got the pesto which is also an extra charge. They forgot the pesto but we took the sandwich to go, so we didn't realize that. The next time we got lunch, I had the burrito and it needed salsa or hot sauce. Luckily, we ate outside in the covered seating area and I was able to go back in to get hot sauce AND the pesto sauce they forgot a second time. What is it about the pesto that they forget? They offered to remake the sando but I said no just gimme a side. Apparently there is hot sauce by the microwave FYI. The store has all kinds of drinks and snacks. We grabbed two small bags of chips. They also have premade meals for lunch dinner and even breakfast. Everything looked so good. If I lived there, I would shop all the time. They have a butcher shop as well. There is a small bathroom around the back for customers. And a sink in the covered eating area to wash your hands. Parking is along the street or their little lot. Check this place out. It's not fancy. But is sure is good.

We saw the sign in front of the building which said they had award winning sandwiches, so we thought we'd give it a try. We entered and found our way to the deli counter where we were greeted by a sandwich maker. Once we made our choice--ham and turkey with provolone on crusty white sourdough bread with mayo, pickles, lettuce and tomato, we waited for the assembly. While waiting we pondered grabbing a pasta salad from the tasty looking assortment on the shelf to accompany our sandwich but in the end opted for a container of local California strawberries, and chips (plain for the hubs and oil and vinegar for yours truly). While at the register the friendly cashier suggested a Mexican marzipan style cookie, which we readily agreed to. Lunch was delicious later as we sat on a park bench by a peaceful pond in the middle of Jack London state park. My husband particularly enjoyed the bread. We'd recommend the market to anyone in need of a delicious sandwich and we'll be back next time we're in Sonoma. They also had a plenteous supply of groceries.

The restaurant looks small at the front but opens up to a large, cute patio in the back. The patio is covered but feels bright and open, and with the recent cold weather, they had plenty space heaters around. My boyfriend ordered the Wagyu steak and eggs, and I ordered the biscuit sandwich. My boyfriend's steak was cooked perfectly medium rare, and he loved the crispy, rustic sourdough bread and potatoes on the side. The biscuit was large and fluffy, but was a little too soft for my liking; I also added bacon to the sandwich but it felt a little skimpy and the bacon was excessively fatty / chewy. This wasn't my favorite breakfast, but I also think I made the wrong choice for myself. My boyfriend's meal and all the other food around us looked delicious, and the ambiance was great, so I think this place is still 4 stars worthy!

Good thing Sonoma Market is known for their sandwiches and deli and fresh prepared meals. You'll find a really fun selection of local cheeses, condiments, produce, and baked goods that bigger grocery stores don't carry. You'll spend a little more, but the shopping experience is more curated and atmospheric, and the products speak for themselves. I stopped in recently while on a short trip to Sonoma, specifically for salsa, some kind of dip or spread for crackers, and a cheese or two. I spent awhile browsing because that's the best part, and left with exactly what I needed (proud and amazed I stuck to my budget haha). I bought a fantastic bleu cheese, brie, a cantina style salsa, and this whipped, layered, tomato-basil dip made of ground almonds, avocado, sour cream, tomatoes, and herbs. Kind of a lot going on, but it was so good. It's always fun to see what you'll find here. Like a locally made gluten free apple pie, the perfect bouquet of flowers, or a freshly baked loaf of sourdough.

If you come in here at five 5 o'clock or after, it's always a disgusting display. Very sad to see.
