Pad Thai

I just got the pad Thai this place is so good! Lots of sauce really good portion 10/10 food cart

Menu
Matt R.

My wife and I dropped our daughter off for softball practice than came here for dinner. We were drawn in by the neighboring BBQ stand (but they were closed) and saw the Thai cart (so we investigated). The menu looked good and inviting so we ordered. I had the Pad Thai and she had the Pineapple Fried Rice. The food was good. The portions were larger. And everything came out fast and hot. More importantly, it came out correct. We didn't come looking for Thai (I still really want BBQ) but am satisfied with our dinner.

I dug right into the food. I apologize for not taking any pictures. This was a togo order. I did…read morenot call ahead. I showed up just after 5pm on a Sunday evening. They have a small and cozy dining hall that was full. I had all ready had an idea of what I would order but quickly looked at the menu just in case I wanted to take additional item home. I ordered papaya salad, pad see ew, and tom ka soup. I also got a thai tea to go. I might have waited 15-20 minutes for my order. There were also several call in orders that people came in to pick up. I am surprised at the speed they produced the food. The bench seat had a small view of the kitchen. I believe this is a very efficient full fledged family restaurant. Everyone was friendly and nice. The way they packaged the food was thoughtful. I had a 20 minute drive back home. It stayed warm /hot and no leakage even with the soup. Now the food: Papaya salad was delicious. Great flavor. My only issue is it was marked on the menu as spicy. *Morgan Freeman voice* -it was not in fact spicy. It was completely spice free. I know that SE asians are sweet to profile us pale people as no heat, but I was really looking forward to spice.... So for next time I will request heat added as I am a non-practicing alabaster person. To be fair, every fair complexion person with a togo order clarified that their food was "non spicy." I can't call them out for playing it safe. Yes queens. Pad see ew: shrimp was my protein. It was delicious. Regular broccoli was used. Chinese broc might be out of season. I don't care. It was great. Will eat again FR. Tom ka soup: the gem of this story. They made it without onions, be praised, as I have a horrible allergy and most of my one star food reviews are about food safety in relationship to ignoring food allergies. This was fresh, flavorful, bright. Great protein to both ratio. Probably one of the best versions I have ever had. Will be ordering again. Probably regularly. Thai tea: was great. Ice, tea, milk ratio good. I like less ice in my drinks... she somehow knew this. Now I know if I want Thai I have a place to call Thai Home (see what I did there), that I won't have to drive twice the distance to Portland to get fantastic Thai food. Honestly, I think this is way better than most of the thai restaurants in the greater portland area. Thank you for a wonderful dinner and subsequent left overs! 10/10.

Came in around 8 and got sat immediately with only two other tables being occupied. The server sat us quickly and we were given menus, we promptly got our order taken and it seemed as if we were judged for the spice level we requested and it was very off putting. The portions of food were good, however right after eating at this establishment I got sick to my stomach- with many symptoms of food poisoning. The staff were cleaning and shutting down the restaurant 30 minutes prior and did not check in with us at all during that time. When requesting for two boxes to split both of the things of food we had left, one quite a bit more than the other we were given two very small containers that only one of the meals would fit in. (By this I mean both containers used for one plate of food instead of one larger container) We stood up at the front for a while seeing people pass back and forth in the back without any kind of acknowledgment until our waitress finally made eye contact. The prices were very fair for Thai food, just wish I would have had a better experience.

At the restaurant, we decided to try the basic Pad Thai and then the chicken fried rice. It was yummy but not as big of portions as I've had other Thai restaurants. (But that was ok, we didn't need leftovers anyway.) I gave only three & 1/2 stars for the following reasons. 1. Inside felt "dated" and a bit forgotten (see pics) 2. The service was "ok" I was hoping for more conversation or interest in us. 3. The area outside was very dark. It looked like the entire block was closed! 4. The curry puffs were a little expensive at $11.95 for 3 of them. (So we didn't get them) On a positive note, a nice touch was the soft music playing and the program on the tv showing beautiful images of Thailand. (See pics). All in all, we will be back to try our favorite curry puffs and maybe some egg rolls.

I then went next and did some quick shopping... and picked up the soup when I was done. It was waiting for me even though I was not gone long. Got home, put everything in a bowl... and tried to make it pretty! Chashu pork portion was small, but it tasted fine. The three shrimp included were yummy and large. The soft eggs were ok, as were the bean sprouts and herbs. The broth was sort of like a cross between Tom Kha and Tom Yum.... tasty though. The ramen noodles were basically one solidified block by the time I got home, so I just cut them up a bit before eating. I will have to try some of their other dishes too....

Looks can be deceiving but they were perfectly cooked, filled with meat and the sauce they came in was savory and sweet. The pineapple fried rice was lacking in a bit of seasoning/flavor. Texturally it was very good, cooked well. Adding in some sambal helped. The kahri noodles were very good, reminded me of drunken noodles. It states it's spicy, but there wasn't much, even with asking for extra spice. Overall I would definitely try again, but it wasn't spectacular.

I'd also suggest you upgrade some of your meal to include shrimp, as they're local and quite amazing! Service is takeout only, so your ambiance is the waiting area......but service is ultra quick while you wait, and the food is piping hot. Is it exotic? Nope. Just danged solid Thai basics. But, their spice level is very adjustable. You're gonna get low spice unless you ask them to upgrade it. I confidently as for a five: Thai hot. It's honestly not that hot, but it adds a lot of flavor. They also have a really nice hot chili garlic sauce that I'd encourage you to try. For the Thai aficionados, Id drop it a star. But, it's not for them. If you just want good Thai and don't want to drive across the river, this is your option, and it's a darned good one! I'll update as I get into the curries......

I mean if your in Long Beach, WA. and you want fish N chips or a burger, you my friend have found paradise. We wanted neither, especially not at these prices. Earlier we noticed a Thai Food place but it didn't open till 2:00 and it was a little before 1:00pm. so we kept looking for something we both wanted and after saying No to all of it including the Mexican Food place with their high prices, we noticed it was almost 2:00pm. We figured by the time we walk back Malai Thai should be open and we were right. There is No Handicap Access and it's only a matter of time before that becomes an issue.....more of an issue. We saw an older person with a walker go inside and sit at 1 of 2 tables. They don't have table service, Only Take Out. That's right, TOGO Order's Only! That was fine for us because the sun was shining and we saw an empty picnic bench next to a fish pond with a fountain, perfect. We both ordered Pad Thai, she had chicken, I ordered mine with tofu. Bought some cold cans of soda and waited. Our food came out pretty fast. Then again, we were first in line that day. We grabbed our stuff and headed out to the picnic bench, perfect. We opened our boxes and everything looked and smelled delicious and it was. We didn't really talk while eating. Just the sound of a coastal town and us getting busy with our food.I judge all Thai Restaurants by how they make pad Thai. Malai Thai has it down good. The best was the prices. For one thing, costal restaurants charge tourists rates on everything. Like more than double in some cases. Do they think we don't have an Amazon account. Malai Thai was priced fairly. We were very happy with our meal and how much it cost. Definitely coming back and trying other menu items.
