Burgers, fried, and onion rings.
Elizabeth S.

Dandy's Drive-In in Bend, Oregon, is a retro experience! You roll up in your car, and in the spirit of the swinging 1960s, a server glides over on roller skates, ready to take your order with a smile. The atmosphere is alive with nostalgia, echoing the classic Americana drive-in vibe from 1968. We ordered two cheeseburgers, crispy fries, and some delicious onion rings--and they did not disappoint! It's simple food done right---old-school dining. Although I was super bummed that the milkshake machine was down during my visit (stop it, that's like the ultimate drive-in treat!), I can't wait for next time. Perfect stop for curbside pickup, delivery, or the classic drive-through, Dandy's keeps the good times rolling and "is" a burger must stop.

This was my first traditional drive in experience and it didn't disappoint. Service was prompt and friendly. Burger was good but the onion rings were 20000/10, fried to perfection and the onion bites cleanly. Would love to try their shakes next time we are in town.

How do you eat this in your car?

This review is mostly for gluten-free people who have heard Dandy's is good and wonder if it would be good for them too. I would say just don't. I only went because of a school fundraiser. I brought my own gf bun and asked if they could assemble a burger on it. They said no, which is completely understandable. I asked for the components of a burger so I could assemble myself and made a point of asking about condiments. You can see in the pic what they gave me- maybe that smear on the box crease was the condiment? Also, the food came in a bag. I guess I misunderstood the point of a drive in- isnt it to eat in your car? They don't give you trays or lap mats or anything (I guess I was spoiled by In N Out and thought that was standard). Oh, also the fries are $4 and pretty small orders so don't let them tell you it will be enough for 2 ppl to share. Anyway, I took it home to assemble my burger and I have to say the patty was quite bland. Fries and fry sauce were good. The craziest part was- I just fed the same amount of people AND got a gluten free bun with way better food at Americana for less money. 3 stars because my kids did like their burgers.

Love a good burger, shake and fries. This place has been a staple in Bend for a long time. You pull into your stall and flash your lights when you are ready to order. Car hops are still on roller skates (good for them.. I might have broken an ankle). Menu board is positioned high enough you can see it from all seats in the car. Decided to get the little dandy with bacon and cheese, fries (we will come back to these) and a malt. I was a little bummed (personal issues) that there was not a huckleberry malt/shake available. I Decided to go with cookies and cr. It was so creamy it was hard to suck through the straw until it melted a little bit. Ok.. now for the fries. I absolutely hate shoestring fries so I was happy to see they have thick cut ones. Almost like a steak-cut fry but not as big. Cooked just right, crunch on the outside soft on the middle.

DRIVE-IN with excellent carhop service! Milkshake was just right with flavor and consistency, burgers were packed with flavor, and fries were nice airy and crispy

Such a fun experience! From the rollerskating order takers to the nostalgia of the drive-in experience. Loved it! We stopped on our way back from hiking and sightseeing all day. We were famished. A burger and shake sounded wonderful. We ordered two Grand Dandy's ($9.50 each), tator tots ($3.50) and a 22 oz vanilla shake ($5) to share. Everything was yummy. The burgers are a nice size (1/3 lb) so I couldn't imagine either one of us getting a double. The tots were cooked perfectly, not greasy at all. The shake was thick with a nice vanilla flavor. Overall a great experience, with the food and service. We'll definitely be back! BTW, they take credit cards now. Started a couple months ago. Even better!

This place was so fun! A true throwback experience with the friendly server on purple suede roller skates to boot! We both liked our food- I got the grilled cheese with ham and it was really good. And the burger also got a thumbs up. The milkshakes were delicious too. Recommend this place if you are going for a fast food experience.

One of the many mice that can frequently be found at Dandy's.

Dandy's is simply terrible, the quality decreases each day. I have been going here regularly for years, but never again. They continue to raise prices as they decrease the amount of food served. This would be understandable, but the quality continues to diminish. It is worse in the morning, but the dinner crew isn't much better. The bacon is soggy and uncooked, the grilled cheese is always burnt and black, the fries are either overdone or underdone, the onion rings are burnt or come in a soggy clump, the tater tots are burnt on the outside and raw on the inside, the burgers are undercooked or burnt, the chicken strips are terrible, etc. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. THE MANAGEMENT IS INCOMPETENT AND HATES YOU. They also ignore their problems instead of fixing them. You can see mice running around more often than not. Check your burgers to see if a mouse took a bite!

The double dandy with cheese - huge!

She was accommodating and really knew the menu so well. They have a special deviled egg each week and this week was a balsamic reduction and sun dried tomatoes. It was delicious! Great texture on the filling. Paired perfectly with the picketed red onion. 8.5/10 The clam chowder is some of the best clam chowder I've ever had, hands down. It's packed with so many clams and potatoes! Great depth of flavor. Perfectly creamy. It was just the cup of soup I needed on a cold day. 9/10 The PNW elk burger was not my favorite item I've ever had. Not pictured is a Marion Berry jam under the patty, and that jam was very very saucy, it ran all over the plate and soaked through the bottom bun too much to the point where the bun became mushy and fell apartment. It was too overwhelmingly sweet, I couldn't even really taste the elk. I think if it had everything else minus that jam, it could be a very successful dish. Their food is still really good, just this dish was not it for me. The restaurant is casual, and they have a bar section as well. They've got breakfast all day and they've got a great selection of beers and drinks. I would definitely come back here!! It really feels so welcoming there. It's one of those places you could really enjoy having a few friends get together.

Do not skip the bread and butter - again sounds simple but the local bread was perfectly toasted with creamy salted butter. All of our meals were some of the best food that each of us has ever had. The seafood chowder got rave reviews, the burrata salad was fresh and bright, and the short rib with Tillamook cheddar polenta was outstanding. Even simple fries were elevated by being served in a cast iron skillet with locally made ketchup and mustard aioli. Every person loved their meal and the incredible service continued throughout. It was incredibly dry without any sauce, served with roasted potatoes (instead of mashed as advertised), and came with a little salad... there was no dressing on the salad, so it was really of no added value on the plate. I really wanted to like this place, but even the service is just a little "off" from my expectations. I sat for over 10 minutes with no contact from a server. No water. And the place had no air conditioning on a day that was 80 degrees. I don't think I'll give this place a third try, but I hope they can fix the problems. I like their concept and location.

We ordered the calamari for an appetizer, it was good, not overly cooked. I had clam chowder which had good flavor as well. For entrees we had the chicken fried chicken and the fish and chips. The chicken was by far better than the fish. The tartar sauce was not good at all, tasted spoiled to me. The fish was nothing to get excited about either. The best thing I had was the fries. I get that they are the oldest restaurant in town and maybe that's what they are banking on, however, quality and speed of service are missing big. We were never asked if we wanted another drink, never had our waters refilled, but they sure didn't forget if we wanted dessert! Gotta make sure you get that money or at least try...we passed on the dessert. I only gave it 2 stars due to the view we had, it was probably the best thing we had, the fries were the 2nd best. Updated from 2 to 1 star. After I posted my initial review while sitting at the table. They brought our check, I put my card down on the check. We then waited and waited and waited! I finally became impatient, took the check up to the hostess to see if they could cash us out. Of course they had to get a manager to do that. Clearly, they are not staffed appropriately to have people waiting for long periods of time on each step of the dining experience.
