I stayed in Bend during a road trip and stumbled upon this gem. The beer selection was great, featuring many local brews, and the food was also delicious. The place had a cozy atmosphere, but most importantly, the staff were friendly and knowledgeable about beers, something I really value in a beer bar. To be honest, I had gone to another brewery near the river in the area earlier where I was treated terribly by their bartender, and I was starting to think that was just the vibe in Bend. This spot completely turned things around and showed me how great the beer scene in Bend truly is. I highly recommend it! read more

Downtown Bend is a haven for beer lovers. We went to as many breweries and taprooms as we could; Brother Jon's was one of our only beer bars as we were in need of an afternoon snack. The place feels like an old diner, with booths around the outside, a big bar, tables filling the main space, and beer kitsch all over the walls. The taplist was great, with many local options. I opted for an IPA from a nearby brewery that happened to be closed that day. We also had soft pretzels and other snacks. Everything was alright - service was just okay, it didn't feel welcoming but it wasn't bad either. It was the kind of place we knew we were done after one drink. I had a wonderful salmon sandwich at Brother Jon's Alehouse last night. The bun was really fresh and the salmon was perfectly cooked. I also enjoyed the chips and guacamole, and a bite of my friend's perfectly cooked soft huge pretzel. The servers were friendly and efficient, although I got the sense that they were very overworked. I could have done without the really loud atmosphere, but that is to be expected at a sports bar. We were glad that we ate here, as our vegan friend found a good quinoa bowl, and the rest of us found range other good options. It was also reasonably priced compared to some other restaurants. read more

Wow! And not in a good way. If you've been to Brother Jon's many times like we hav, you know when you walk in they say sit wherever you like. There were only 2 tables. One very small 2 top and one 4 top. We picked the 4 top, we have sat at that two top before, and it's very small and not very comfortable. We got all settled in, coats, scarfs, and purses off, and a waitress came over and asked us if we could move to the two top because a five top came in right behind us. I told her we would move because we're nice. The five top never showed up! There we sat at an uncomfortable small table! Several parties started to sit there, but decided to move somewhere else. Finally, a family of five showed up. A couple with three babies! You know it was not a quiet scene with a table like that for your neighbor! So much for a nice evening out with my husband. it's not the restaurants fault that a table of five with three babies came in and sat next to us, but it certainly didn't help the situation we found ourselves in. Then, I ordered some sparkling wine. It came to the table flat. They were nice enough to return it for another glass. Because we moved to the other table, the sun was setting, and the sun was in my eyes. Very uncomfortable! I was really getting cranky! Why were we asked to move in the first place if that party of 5 never arrived?! Why were we not rewarded with a glass of wine or beer for moving after being TOTALLY settled in? This is one of the 1st restaurants I went to years ago after moving here and one I've been to more than a lot of others. What can I say? Great service and great food. I typically order their French Dip (prob 90% of the time). The sandwich itself is generously portioned on that Sparrow hoagie and their Au Jus has a great flavor. This is probably tied with Broken Top for the best dip in town (although BTBS's is very different). The other day, I went with the Steak Sandwich, which I don't remember seeing that particular version before. It was the Garlic-soy marinated flank steak with chimmichurri, havarti, arugula, tomato,and onion. Wow! So many fantastic flavors and textures packed into that sandwich!! As usual, the meat on the sandwich was plentiful, with steak stretching from one edge, non-stop, to the other. Look at my pic, see the juices glistening in the steak! The way the chimmichurri soaked into the bun was just awesome. The havarti was just softened and not overly melted. And a Sparrow hoagie...? Just about perfection. I may have found a new fave. It's a little expensive at $17, but add some fries and you could prob split with someone for a reasonable lunch. Brother John's does it right across the board. We stopped into Brother Jon's after a day of exploring Crater Lake, trying a few breweries in Bend, and looking for a place to have a bite to eat that was still serving with the 10pm curfew. Someone at the last brewery recommended BJ's to us and we can see why! My friend and I shared the pesto mac n cheese, which came with a salad, and the salmon burger that we got with tots. Both were SO good! The Mac n cheese was creamy, the chicken was juicy, and it was nice that it came with a salad to balance the rich flavor of the Mac. The salmon burger had a very generous and well cooked filet on it, with a good balance of toppings. The tots were perfectly crunchy and delicious. This place is mid at best and that's just based on the excellent service. The food was bland and generally awful. Worst steak fries I have ever had in my life no flavor except grainy cold chimichuri and very small portions. My husband had the wings and we have had better out of a frozen box. This place is worth driving three hours for (we live near Portland). Walked in Friday April 25th at about 6pm. Found 2 chairs at the bar open. I asked for 2 menus, the bar tender said I have to wait. The bar back was a young gal putting glasses away right in front of me. I asked her for a menu. She acted as though she never heard or saw me. Like I was invisible to the eye. Then that same too-busy bar tender, came over and read me the riot act saying, I need to wait for him and him only. I've been to many bars in my life for food & drink. First I should have walked out and left after that non sense. Secondly, If that happens again, I will NOT leave a tip. If I were the owner of that restaurant, I would fire that bar-back and make it clear to the bar tender that paying customers are to be treated well........ I won't go bake to brother johns! I am so sad. This was our go-to place. We had a terrible experience tonight. We ordered a fish sandwich that is described as RPM battered cod. They delivered a turkey sandwich and under cooked fries. We sent that back and received a bun, lettuce and what looked like a couple of worms rolling in sauce. Our waitress quickly responded and took it away and said "the guy who made this went home". She never offered a sub - just took it away and brought the check with my sandwich removed. Okay guys - I am not one of those people looking for a free meal. Stopped by here on our last night in Bend to eat with our son and his friend. We got right in and was seated quickly. We started with beers and and ordered the tater tots as an appetizer. Came with ketchup and two tasty sauces, ranch and a chipotle style sauce. The table enjoyed the tots. Two of us had the fish and chips and two had the chicken pesto Mac. We really liked the fish. The retired teachers that I met while in the checkout line of Hobby Lobby told me to visit Brother Jon's Alehouse for good food. When I hear Alehouse or Public house, I think of a bar. The teachers corrected me and told me that they had good food. Immediately after paying, we drove directly to Brother Jon's Alehouse. They were busy at 2 PM in the afternoon the day after Christmas. The place was packed. Lucky for us, my wife insists that we do takeout. I ordered a Brother Jon's burger for myself and a French dip for my wife and daughter to share. Along with the sandwiches, they also included their home made potato chips. The Brother Jon's burger is basically a double burger with cheese, lettuce and tomatoes on a potato roll. The burger was big. It was one of the better burgers that I've had in a while. They cooked it perfectly and had the right amount of their secret sauce. The French dip was gobbled up by my wife and daughter. We all liked their food. I'm glad that the two retired teachers could point me in the right direction for food. It was a great recommendations. The honey mustard dressing was the perfect dressing for the salad. The steak was not over cooked and was tender. Everything tasted fresh in the salad. The peppersteak sandwich was delicious! The bomb sauce that comes on the sandwich is made in house and it adds a great flavor to the sandwich. The steak, onions, and peppers with the bomb sauce and the soft bread made a great sandwich. The fries that came with the sandwich were also really good. Even the strawberry lemonade was amazing. Everything at Brother Jon's is made in house and they catch their fish daily so its fresh. Went to the Alehouse last night for the first time. We've been to the Public House once before and love the ramshackle, apres ski feel to the place. The Alehouse looks far more corporate. Loved the booths and had a great view of the last few innings of the World Series. If you're looking for a place watch a game, it's great. Of course, we only went for the food and Brother Jon's slays! My fiance got a bowl of the French Onion soup which was delicious. I got the large Caesar salad add Salmon. I'm never one to shy away from a large anything and this salad was ample and loved the dressing. Our friend got the French Dip and added a side of Tater Tots well done. She loved it. I don't eat meat. I will say those tater tots were delicious. We also got a side of their special sauce (bomb sauce?). I'd gladly drink a pint of that. Our friend got a boozy cider which she loved. I was in Bend recently and my mom (a local) suggested this spot for lunch. She said their other place was really good but had never been to this location. We both walked away very pleased! She had the blackened salmon salad and I had the French dip. My sandwich had grilled onions and mushrooms which I'm not usually a fan of, but they really worked. The mushrooms added more substance and were tasty. My mom loved her salad as well and didn't have any complaints. It was a little on the spendy side; my French dip was $14 and would have been more had I upgraded from the kettle chips it came with. All in all, I'd go back. read more
