kinda overrated. went with a friend that was in from out of town -- this one has been on my list for a while and finally got around to it. after an initial kind of annoying reservation process (+ the mandatory $15 pp hold) -- which, by the way the restaurant was pretty empty the entire time we were there so kinda random why it was so difficult to get a resy for an early dinner on a Thursday. ‍ anyway, server was fine though a non-stop avalanche of menu explanation. a little exhausting up front. unsure what people mean by "family style" these days -- but anything can be family style i guess if what you mean is sharing plates. the portions were definitely not particularly what one thinks of when someone says "family style". the guy recommended something like 6-8 plates for the three of us which seems a little intense (especially given the pricing). food was pretty good but nothing incredible. ordered: THE Overpriced Tomato: the name is accurate. overpriced. but fairly tasty. no idea where the bone marrow was, but i guess it was somewhere in the bread. fritto misto: this was fine gnocchi: was good stracci: was decent ravioli: was probably the best one of the lot. i enjoyed the corn in it. the cocktails were decent (i enjoyed the savory "Martinification"). I learned about Daisies through a colleague and also read that it got a Michelin green star recently so I wanted to try it out. I talked to my work friends and in no time, there were 9 people interested in dining here. We made reservations for dinner on a Saturday ahead of time as two separate but we learned that if we merge as one big group then there is a fixed menu. Even though we changed our request at the last minute to split from a big group to two separate ones, the staff accommodated us. It was very nice and kind of them (they could have declined our request). The atmosphere inside was great - it was decently loud. Our server was fantastic, he recommended great options. Our food from drinks to appetizers to entrees to dessert was just brilliant. The flavor in each item was outstanding! Loved this place. First of all, the service is impeccable. From the hosts, to the food/drink runners, bussers and wait staff, it was seriously some of the best service I've ever had anywhere. The ambience is wonderful, love the lighting, the entire vibe. The cocktails were delicious and so inventive! And of course, the food. We had the potted carrots (maybe the least liked dish at our table but we still enjoyed it), the onion dip with potatoe chips and caviar (so delicious), the mushroom toast (really intense) two pastas (our favorite had an egg and pancetta) and the pork protein dish. All were delightful. Then we had the gooey cake and the crème brûlée cake thing but our favorite dessert was the berry sorbet! Insane! We ordered the Sweet Onion and Onion Dip to start. For a fried food lover, I enjoyed the onion dip more. I felt like the sweet onion was missing something. For pastas, the Stracci and the rigatoni were great. If you don't like spice, heads up because the rigatoni has a little heat. Lastly the turkey wings were good. You could taste the honey they used in it and it came with a side of a wet towel, which was very much appreciated. Not quite sure how this is a Michelin star restaurant. For starters, our waiter was awful. Don't think he cracked a smile the entire night and was very short with us. Our drinks took over 30 min to come out, our apps came out well before then. Me and my girlfriends came for the "amazing pasta" we've been seeing online but it was at most mediocre and came out lukewarm. Food also took over an hour. The best part about this entire experience (sarcasm), there is an automatic 25% service charge on all parties. HILARIOUS. No wonder our waiter was so miserable, I'd do the bare minimum too if I knew I'd get a fat tip after every party i served. Won't be coming back thanks daisies! read more

Went to Daisies for brunch--this is a great option for those who can't get a reservation in for dinner. We started off with the maple scone to share, and wow was it delicious. I didn't realize it was possible for a scone to be so moist and still retain all the qualities of a scone. All of us ordered the lox and latke on the menu. This was another winner. My favorite dish on this visit was the Pumpkin Agnolotti with brown butter sauce - wow wow wow! The Flourless Chocolate Cake for dessert will be in my dreams. Came here after getting a glowing recommendation from my brother and SIL. We're all big fans of the pasta at Tortello, so was pretty excited to try this place out. Up-front non-food/drink items: - Highly recommend snagging a reservation if you can, but I do believe they take walk-ins at the bar first come, first serve. - The interior is really beautiful and quite spacious. I think the fermented tomatoes gave it a funk that I'm personally not a fan of, but it did make for a great leftover. Totally forgot to take a pic, but the truffle flavor, asparagus, and anchovy was an amazing combo. Warm Rhubarb Crostata (pistachio | rhubarb compote | chamomile anglaise): This... just tasted like a cronut lol. It was good, but I'm not sure if it was what I expected lol. Overall, had a great time. A very solid competitor to Tortello and I would definitely be interested in trying some of their other pastas and mains next time. I came here on a rainy Sunday afternoon for lunch and there was no wait. There were only a handful of tables occupied when we arrived. We picked a table and sat ourselves down and waited for awhile before we realized that we had to order our food up front with the barista. I also got a few pastries and a matcha latte while I was up there. I didn't realize that everything was self-service. We had to fetch our own utensils, plates, water, napkins, and to-go boxes since there wasn't a single worker in the dining area outside of the barista which kind of threw me off. There's a small menu for lunch and it only consists of sandwiches. I had the smoked whitefish sandwich (frisee, smoked trout roe, dill, sprouted wheat) while hubby had the cubano (roasted pork, ham, house pickles, swiss, ciabatta). The bread for both sandwiches was probably the best part of the meal. The smoked whitefish sandwich was super saucy and the cubano mostly tasted like mustard and pickles. The matcha latte I had was well blended but only had a mild matcha flavor. We had a hazelnut pastry and a rhubarb pastry which were decent. I liked the flavor of the rhubarb pastry but the outside was so hard so it was difficult for my toddler to eat. Absolutely fantastic restaurant if you're a fan of farm to table and specialty pasta dishes. My friend and I got a reservation one week out (they seem busy and normal dinner reservations book out in the week). We were seated immediately, the restaurant is on the smaller side so the tables were pretty close but still the ambience was intimate enough that you don't pay attention to those next to you. Our waitress was phenomenal and gave very detailed explanations of each appetizer and pasta dish, very well deserved of the included service charge in each meal. We started with the rutabaga latke that was a fried latke cake with delicious toppings. Their pastas were scrumptious, each dish is unique and so different. Our favorite was the manti pasta with seasonal squash and a tomato tart sauce that compliment the sweet filling so well. The stracci pasta was so chewy and savory with the well cooked lamb that melts in your mouth. The tajarin was described as a chicken noodle soup in pasta form which was truly right on, not too salty or savory, perfectly balanced with the lighter pasta. This was my second time dining at Daisies and it was just as excellent at the first. We had made a reservation and were seated almost immediately when we arrived and served water. Our waiter came by shortly after and was so easy going and introduced us to the menu a bit without overexplaining, which was appreciated. The service remained incredibly high quality all night, which is something I remembered from my last visit. My friends and I joked that they had to have cameras on us because someone was always there to refill our water or clear dirty plates or wipe down the table as soon as we needed them to. Even with this attentive service, though, it never felt pushy or overbearing. The food was incredible. We ordered the Onion Dip with homemade ruffles and the Fried Brussel Sprouts for appetizers. The dip was salty and savory and the chips were perfectly crisp--exactly what we wanted to start the meal. The sprouts were excellent and tasted so indulgent. For our entrees, we ordered the Pappardelle, the Pierogi, the Agnolotti, and the Stuffed Farfalle, which our waiter complemented as being a good variety to try from (we ate family-style as recommended) The four of us dining each had a different ranking of the pastas, which spoke to how good all of them were. My favorite was the Farfalle, with the Agnolotti a very very close second (it has such a unique and delicious taste and it's also such a gorgeous pink color), followed by the Pappardelle, then the Pierogi. All of them were delicious, though and I'm glad we had so many to try. We then ordered two cappuccinos and two desserts: the Gooey Butter Cake and the Coffee Budino, and they brought out an adorable little slice of chocolate cake for our birthday girl. The cake was incredible with the chai sorbet, though I could only have a bite because of how indulgent it was. The budino we didn't know what to expect, but it was like a coffee pudding with mascarpone cream, little crisps of espresso caramel, and bits of orange. The bread that came with the carrot dish was fantastic. We skipped the second course and for the third course we got the Pappardelle and the Stracci. The Stracci was by far the most delicious thing we ate that night. The lamb was cooked to perfection and the noodles were delicious. The Pappardelle was good, too, but could not compare with the Stracci. For dessert we got the Raspberry Pretzel Cake and the Chocolate Chip Cookie. If I'm ever back in Chicago - I will make it a point to come back here. I was traveling for work and I made a reservation for 1 for 5pm. I arrived a little early and had a lovely drink at the bar - they have great happy hour cocktail prices and the cocktail I ordered (a Jade Sbagliato) was right up my alley - a little bitter a little tart and a little saline. If I can come back - I'll definitely come for happy hour to try the tinned fish selections and I'll bring a second person to share with. :) Dinner was also great. I had the Fritto Misto that could easily have been shared by three or four people and a rainbow trout with crispy skin and a drizzle of something a tiny bit lemony). If I hadn't been so stuffed - I would have ordered the butterscotch budino for dessert. In hindsight - I should have ordered it and then asked for a box to scoop it into for later. I'm a huge pasta fan and Daisies had been on my list for a couple years now so I was excited to finally give it a try. Unfortunately this was a disappointment for me and I'm rounding up from 2.5 stars for the wonderful staff. In one sentence, there was just an overwhelming amount of salt in majority of the dishes and the pasta was undercooked in more than one dish. The dining area is quite beautiful, especially the ceiling. Our server was very kind and immediately brought the 25% service charge to our attention so there were no surprises. A finely curated menu, we opted for the family set menu to try a variety of pastas and dishes. At $55 per person ($110 total) and 3 starters, 4 pastas and 2 desserts, there is definitely value in this menu. You can also add wine for $30 which is not bad at all! The beet agnolotti is not part of the set menu so we added that because it was on my must-try list. Starters: + French onion dip with house-made chips - the chips were amazing, onion dip left a faint onion dip taste. Wish there was a stronger French onion tie in or was a bit chunkier with sautéed onions. + Cucumbers were crunchy and tossed with lots of herbs like cilantro. The sweetness component was blueberries which was unique. This was a good starter to bring some freshness. + Green beans with smoked sturgeon. Unfortunately this is where the saltiness starts. It is once in a blue moon note the server about something but from the first bite, I thought the fish/green beans was dipped in salt, that's how crazy the taste was. They were kind enough to make again and the second time, it was slightly better with a lot of lemon douse over to offset the salt, but still pretty salty. We couldn't finish this dish. Mains: + The Beet Agnolotti that we added on came next and it was a relief this dish was not salty. Instead the pasta was undercooked and hard to the bite. This would have been my favorite dish of the night if not for that. The stuffing was light but served with cream, trout roe, and dill was really tasty. + Ravioli was a creamed corn and white cheese was unique. Pasta cooked fine, served with some picked jalapeños on top to bring a sourness and corn. I wasn't a huge fan of this flavor pairing. Saltiness was acceptable at the 7/10 level (scale with 5 is just right). + Risotto was with summer squash. It was slightly on the sweet side and all kind of one note. There was neonata spread on the squash that gave a more sour than spicy kick. The risotto was also slightly undercooked where it felt like we were eating a thick soup as the rice didn't absorb the sauce yet. + Pappardelle would have been another saving dish if the pasta wasn't undercooked again. When you cut the pappardelle with your fork you could almost feel a snap and taking a bite wasn't silky smooth. + Tarjarin had perfectly cooked pasta with such thin spaghetti but was unfortunately way too salty. The fermented tomato completely overpowered the dish. The toppings were seasoned as well bringing more salt. We ended up boxing this home and adding more tomato paste to balance it out. Desserts: + Ending on a high note! The Pretzel pie with raspberry cheesecake on top was really good! The pretzel crust was crunchy and paired well with the creaminess of the cheesecake and raspberry jam on top. Loved it! + You also get two chocolate chip cookies! We ended up taking these to go too because we saw the salt flakes and got ptsd from the meal. At home, reheating the cookies were yummy. Maybe I'm not well versed in the style of pasta here. My wife and I celebrated our 1-year anniversary here. Our server, Xandon, was truly amazing. When he learned that we were celebrating, he truly went above and beyond to make our night out truly special. The food was great. We came here for dinner with friends on Thursday night to celebrate my husband's birthday. Wonderful upscale casual vibe in the restaurant and even with a full dining room we were able to converse easily at our table. Service was friendly and perfectly paced through the evening. Everything on the menu looked so good that it was honestly difficult to decide what to order. We ended up getting the Potted Carrots, Simple Green Salad, Stracci, Rigatoni, Spaghetti all Chitarra and the Gnocchi. All of the pastas were pretty incredible and cooked to perfection, but our two favorites were the Rigatoni and the Spaghetti. Least favorite pasta was probably the Stracci. I have been seeing Concord grape sorbet on what feels like every dessert menu I have seen for the past month so I finally bit the bullet and tried it. It was interesting but a little sweet for my taste. Overall we absolutely loved our meal and dining experience and would highly recommend the restaurant. read more
