It's about stopping by to chow down on pizza/hoagies/burgers/fried food and of course ice cream. You're not going to break the bank here. There is nothing on the menu over $10 unless you load a large pizza with lots of toppings. I've tried burgers, hoagies, cheese steaks, other assorted sandwiches and the accompanying fries and or onion rings. Average food would be unusual. Everything here is a notch above that. You don't come here for the atmosphere. You don't come here for gourmet cuisine. You come here to have a solid basic meal at a decent price and not to count the calories! read more

Since my last review, I've tried the cheesesteak here on a take out order. Based on the taste of the cheesesteak alone, I'll give them back a star. It's pretty good for Delco. Maybe not South Philly good, but definitely better than a lot of sandwiches you get around these parts. It really depends on how much of a cheesesteak snob you are. Dairy Cottage won't be better than a John's Roast Pork cheesesteak or D'Alessandros. That's just too high a bar. But I'd take one over 90% of the Delco cheesesteaks out there, and probably even take them over a place like Geno's. Whenever the wife is hungry for breakfast or lunch the first place that comes to mind is the Dairy Cottage. I am giving them 3 stars for the past but honestly the last 2 times we have gone it has been a disappointment. Today we were the only ones in there at 2 pm for a late lunch. The waitress was rude and didn't pay us any attention. We had to flag down two other girls as they were chatting away in the back. Here are my gripes: the fries suck, the rolls for the sandwiches has too much bread and too little of the meat. I do like their breakfast on the weekends. The girls who work on the weekends are very attentive, I am pretty sure there are like 8 of them pouring coffee, busing tables and bringing out your order. read more

I'm not sure why it's called the Dairy Cottage, it doesn't seem to have much more dairy than any other restaurant has that doesn't make such a point of it. Anyway it's still a good place to go to get reasonably priced greasy and/or fried things. The Dairy Cottage has the standard pizza place menu: pizzas, stromboli, cheesesteaks and chicken cheesesteaks. They've also got salads, wraps, and some entrees like chicken parm (which oddly enough I haven't sampled) that change from time to time. Hand-dipped ice cream and milkshakes are also available. If you order soda, which you probably will, be forewarned.. the large size is a bladder buster. The chicken cheesesteaks are my personal favorite, slightly less bad for you than a regular cheesesteak... as if it really made a difference once it's slathered in cheese and eaten with a bag of chips. This is a seat yourself place so when you go in don't be shy, just find a table you like and stake your claim. read more

If you had asked me yesterday or any day in the last three decades, I would have given this place 5 stars. But, today I had one of the most horrible service experiences of my life. When we arrived, we were asked "dine in or take out?" and when I said "dine in" we were told to pick any table that had menus on it. We did, and took the booth on the far left, just past a Christmas tree that was set up for the holidays. After we ordered our food and took off our masks, I noticed a heavy, artificial scent that was overpowering. I looked around for an air "freshener" of some kind but found nothing. I walked across to the other side of the room (where there were also booths with menus) and the smell was much less severe there. We moved our glasses of water over to the new booth and sat down. Our waitress came back and asked if there was something wrong with our first table. I explained that there was a strong smell, like maybe some sort of air freshener being dispensed that it was intolerable so we moved. She looked visibly annoyed and shot back snottily that they have no such air fresheners or anything there (although she never went over to the old table to see if she could smell it), and looked under our new table with obvious displeasure on her face. I asked, "is it OK, that we moved?" and she said, "it's just that I just cleaned under there" in a very annoyed sort of way. I said, "I'm sorry" with sincerity. She said, "it's OK" in a way that made it obvious that it was NOT ok with her. Then she walked away with me still asking (to her back), "are you sure? Because it doesn't SEEM OK with you." The food was deposited with MAJOR attitude. She then walked across to the table we had been sitting at previously and YELLED across the restaurant to another waitress, "_____, can you please come clean table #xx? It needs to be cleaned again" in a very put-out sort of way. Recognizing the problem here was that we had created one moment of "extra" work, I offered to solve the problem. "I'll clean it, I don't mind. I just couldn't sit there anymore but I'm happy to clean it" I said. Our waitress then went on to say that it was not just the old table that had to be cleaned, but that she had just swept under our new table and she only gets a certain amount of time allocated for that and now she would have to make time to do it again. I offered again, "well, get me the broom and I'll clean it for you. You see, I don't mind doing a little bit of work, it's fine with me." She stormed off, yelling about us to anyone in the kitchen who would listen, and I could hear her saying things like, "I don't care, I'll take it off my...(something unintelligible)". Next, she stormed over to our table, slammed down two to-go containers, and said, "your lunch is on me today. You don't have to worry about your bill" and seemed to expect us to pack up our food on the spot and go. I said and did nothing and she stormed away. We finished our lunch at the table, being entertained a little by the other young employees horsing around in the kitchen (someone giving piggy-back rides), packed our leftovers in the provided to-go containers, left a $20 bill on the table for what I calculated to be an $18.28 check and left. As we were walking out, someone shouted "happy holidays!" after us (in a way that might have been sarcastic), but I cannot be sure which of the young female voices it was. We had decided to go to the Dairy Cottage today to celebrate my kid's acceptance at his dream college. When we were driving there, I told a story of how I remember going there when I was pregnant and Christmas shopping, 18 years ago probably to the day! Even then I had been a long-time customer and watched this place evolve through the years. I have watched menu changes, renovations, holidays, technology, and many other things change while this place remained a family favorite. I have lots of positive memories, all overshadowed by today's experience. We won't be back. My 30+ years of dining here ended today. Time to find a new family favorite. read more

We have been here a few times now. But that was more than enough to enroll ourselves to their "fan base" :). Nothing less than "All the stars" for the food and service.. Please do not expect an "upscale fancy restaurant" experience. You may walk in and take any table which has menu cards on them. Once ordered, the service is relatively quick - which was really a key for us as we have our impatient 3 year old son. We usually go for soups and one of the "White Pizza" varieties. They are addictive :D.. Regarding the service, once they went beyond their menu to accommodate the "Mac & Cheese" order from my 3 year old son. They did not have it in their menu, but suggested a pasta with butter and some added cheese ... My son enjoyed it :).. I'm giving four stars because we have been coming here for years and I typically have a four star experience. I'm docking a star for one person that consistently makes my experience less enjoyable. On this particular occasion we had my least favorite server. She's a short, thin, older woman with a raspy voice. I do not think it's mean to call her out because she's freakin mean and miserable every time I have her...EVERY. TIME!!! I was a waitress for ten years so I understand that people have bad days. In this case, it can't be a "bad day" because this is her normal attitude every time I see her and it has been...for years. In fact, when I see that she is my server it immediately ruins a part of my experience from the moment she walks up to my table. I just want to get up and move to a new seat. This time, I came here with a friend who was coming here for the first time. When this server walked up with her miserable attitude, my friend was put off and looked at me like, "what is her problem?" I immediately said, I know, I can't stand her, she's miserable every time. If you don't want to be friendly, you don't have to be but do us all a favor and find a job where you are not working with people. I'm pretty low maintenance in the sense that I am there to enjoy my time with whoever I'm dining with. I don't need you to tell jokes and entertain me but what I do expect, is for you not to be a miserable, nasty human being that in turn makes my experience less enjoyable. On this particular occasion she kept asking if we wanted anything else. I said we might get dessert but we aren't sure yet. She kept badgering us over and over again until we finally just ordered so she would leave us alone. We said we weren't ready! We are catching up and waiting a little bit before we order dessert. The restaurant is empty. There's no reason to harass us to order dessert on your terms! Anyway.... The other servers we have are always pleasant and attentive. I've never had a problem with any other server in the history of dining here. Upon entry, you seat yourself. They used to be cash only but have been accepting credit cards for a while now. You can dine in or take out. They have Pepsi products which is always a huge let down for me. They do have a cooler full of other choices though which makes it slightly better. The food comes out pretty quickly. If you order French fries and you want them with your sandwich, you need to specify because otherwise they will bring them out as an appetizer. Their Tuna fish is always very delicious! Their ice cream is always delicious! I love their ice cream sundaes! Other things we've had that are good: pizza, cheesesteak, buffalo chicken wrap, chicken cheese steak, cheese hoagie. They have early bird specials, they serve breakfast. They are open late. They do a lot of takeout. I think they should remodel. I know they've been here forever and it's probably part of its charm but I don't know, from my perspective, I would like to see a makeover to bring it into 2017. I do find the food to be consistently good so it's a great place to stop for lunch or a quick dinner or a meal after a long day of shopping, etc. Love it here! Highly recommend it. Yelp reviews led us to the Dairy Cottage, although we had passed it many times and wondered what it was like. Glad we tried it! It was a Friday night, so they were very busy, but we were surprised at how many people were there to eat-in even later at night; good signs of a vibrant business. Dan L's review about the kids part, was really useful. He said "it's not the type of place you need to worry about them acting up"--That is a great way to explain things. The exterior is very neat and attractive looking, but modest, nothing fancy. Inside is very down-to-earth, and relaxed, great kid environment. The milkshakes really are amazing. My husband watched closely as the woman made it, and it was solid ice cream. Nothing watered-down here. Super thick, and we love them that way. So good! It was pricey for a milkshake, though we did get a big one, and I know it is still way cheaper than the same size at Nifty-Fifties, so it was a deal. Cheesesteaks were great too! Meat tasted like meat, not a water bath, and the rolls were nice and fresh. (I reserve 5 stars for cheesesteaks like Sonny's downtown, who offers a sirloin grade meat, and ingredients that are top notch. For a place that is not trying to compete on the level that Sonny's is, 4 stars, for us, is a very good rating.) We actually only ended up here through frustration. On a random Sunday night, seemingly every restaurant in the area had a 30 minute or more wait. You might say, "but Deeko! If you had just waited at your first choice, rather than driving around looking for a restaurant with no line, you would have eaten faster!" That's beside the point. Eventually, we ended up at the Dairy Cottage. It's a simple place inside. We were given our choice of seating and menus right away. They've got just about everything you'd expect from a pizza shop - we went with a stromboli and a sandwich. Both were good - although we had the same basic feedback for each - decent flavor, but could use more sauce. Service was extremely friendly. Our waitress knew the menu and wasn't shy about giving us her opinions. I was pleasantly surprised with the place, and ready to give it four stars - and then we had dessert. The sundaes are amazing. It's worth the trip alone. They're big, full of toppings, and just about anything you could want it to be. All for a. pretty good price, too. This is a bold statement so let me get it out of the way first: The best cheese steak's in the world are sold at the Dairy Cottage. That's a fact. I don't know how they do it. I've been a Dairy Cottage customer for almost 20 years now. I've been with them through all their changes. The cheesesteaks have remained awesome the whole time, even as each young pimply faced teenage matures as he climbs the ranks to bestow the mighty spatula before passing it along to the next worthy soul. All the other chicken variations of the cheesesteak are great too, but I'm a "cheesesteaks should be made with steak kind-of-guy". With that said, everything on the menu is worth a try. You really can't go wrong. My other favorites are tuna hoagies, milk shakes, a classic cheeseburger, and a chicken parm sandwhich. If I'm not mistaken curly cheese fries were removed from the menu a few years ago, and they were awesome. As I mentioned I've been taking out or eating in for nearly 20 years now. Averaged out over the long run, service has always been quick, accurate and friendly. Sometimes it gets really busy in there and those servers bust their asses. One thing is for sure... I've had hoagies from Dairy Cottage in the past that were awesome, so I decided to go in and check out their breakfast options one Sunday morning. The place was packed, so that seemed ("seemed") like a really good sign. There were a few waitresses rushing around to get everyone settled, so it was a few minutes before we were able to be seated. No biggie! They came over to get our order - I went with french toast; the boyfriend went with the cheesesteak omelette special. It was a good 15-20 minute wait for our food, which in my experience is unusual for a basic breakfast place. When the food finally did come out, it was so underwhelming! The french toast was just a few small pieces, nothing really special. The cheesesteak omelette was super dry and lacked any real flavor. I was so disappointed! Then after we finished our sad breakfasts, it was another 10 minutes before we got our check. A sad end to a sad breakfast. Visited the Dairy Cottage for the first time last year based on the recommendation of friends. Once inside, you might think you've traveled back in time a bit. Wood paneling on the walls, outdated decor, etc. Don't let that dissuade you (I actually rather like the ambiance myself) from checking this place out. The Dairy Cottage is comfort food all the way, and good comfort food at that. I love their cheesesteaks and the paninis are excellent as well. This is a great place to go with kids, there really is something for everyone and it's not the type of place you need to worry about them acting up (within reason of course). This is only the 2nd time I've been to Dairy Cottage, but I must say I'm now a fan. Saturday afternoon while out with the kids, my daughter suggested Dairy Cottage for lunch. While she got her usual wrap, and my son, the grilled ham and cheese, I was bold and decided on the Turkey and Stuffing sandwich. I'm glad I made the choice. The sandwich consisted of Cranberry Sauce, Gravy, Stuffing and real Turkey (not the processed deli stuff) on a long roll. If you like Thanksgiving dinner, this is a pleasant substitute for lunch. I will not hesitate to order it again, and will jump at a chance to go back. Dairy Cottage also has some great french fries. Found chunks of bread and breaded pieces off of some sort or fried item in with the cheesesteak. Luckily saw before I ate the item and threw it out. So beware if you have any allergys and eat here. I'm only giving them an "OK" for now. We have had various ups and downs eating here over the years. It all depends ..... The wait staff is usually good, better than average. The place has a local friendliness about it and treats everyone very well. Our biggest complaint is that you can't get breakfast after 11:00, which is hard if you go there after church unless you don't go to an early Mass or get delayed for any reason. Occasionally they will make a breakfast order if you ask and the cook feels like it (meaning it's not all cleaned up and put away for the day) but you can't count on it. The food is uniformly well made, more or less. I usually get a variety of items and there is almost always a lot of good ones, but sometimes one thing not so hot. Once you are in and get what you want, there is no rush. They can get pretty crowded, but I've never felt pushed to get done. We don't just sit around though, and later in the day it is usually cleared up enough to be no problem for them. We have good memories of Dairy Cottage for many years! It's certainly worth a visit if you are near Springfield for a few days, or are new to the area and need to eat out once in a while where it won't empty your wallet or crash your budget. In other words: usually a good value for the cost and effort. A nice clean place with a long, interesting history. Extra bonus: you might run into us there (just kidding)! read more
