This is my wife and I's favorite breakfast joint in Anacortes. Apparently it's catching on because they are pretty consistently busy! You might have to wait a little, but it's worth it! The menu is written on a chalkboard in the center of the restaurant and is subject to change. They are pretty consistent, though, with most of their choices. They offer vegetarian substitutes, but their meat is where it's at! All the meat is smoked and cooked there and is included in just about every meal. Their biscuits are home made and fantastic! You have to try their biscuits and gravy (it comes with a couple different meats in it!). They also have mimosas and tap beer for those adventurous morning people! What's better than going to Dad's Diner once? Going twice! (Or more!) Seriously good food. I've been through most of the menu now and have yet to find anything I would not recommend. Great for breakfast and great for lunch. Burgers are amazing! Breakfast hash will energize you for the day! Want something a little lighter? The salads are just as awesome! Try the soup dadjour with a side salad and biscuit. The food alone isn't what makes this place great though. The people behind the food are everything you'd hope to find in a small town diner. As an often solo traveller, I'm used to eating alone. I usually bring a book, and expect that there won't be someone trying to make conversation with me. I stopped by Dad's on my way to the San Juans last week, and not only did I have an amazing breakfast/lunch, but I had great conversation, not just with the staff (hi Fletcher!) but also with other patrons who sat with me at the bar. It was such a great and welcoming experience, I will definitely go back the next time I'm in Anacortes. Now, the bar: super comfy chairs, built in hooks under the counter for your purse and coat, and not too high for shorties like me. There are a number of tables that will comfortably sit anywhere from 2 to 6 people, but honestly, the bar seems to be where it's at. To the food: lots of meat on the menu here. I had the hash - potatoes with brisket, two eggs overeasy, and this amazing horseradish sour cream concoction that can only be described as crack. Like, despite being allergic to dairy I snorfled this stuff up with gusto and would happily have ordered more on the side, side effects bedamned. The portion was huge and when it arrived I thought, "There's no way I'll be able to eat all that." Guess what. I COULDN'T STOP GUYS IT WAS JUST SO GOOD. Also, the coffee is delish. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat! When you walk in and the owner is both pleasant and sassy, and he obviously is passionate about his work, you immediately feel at home. I took my Faja here on his birthday. The walls are full of photos of dads and memorabilia from customers. Thinking about the best way to bring attention to the way some grandparents and fathers once cooked for there kids and trying to bring that type of food to the masses, I would submit a place that should go into the ages! Dads Diner, the name just doesn't give the food or owners justice! To explain the items on their menu, even down to the most mundane egg and just how much the chef there can make it sing in the mouth of the patron just cannot be done in mere words. This place is an experience that must be experienced! Anywhere from home sick to being in the mood for an actual home cooked meal, in the few years I have been on this planet I've only been able to find this type of food in two places, the grandparents and here at the diner, Dads Diner. From the carefully crafted sauces made and perfected over time to their very closely guarded biscuits and recipe, made in house this small restaurant is getting far to large for the island it's on thanks to the day to day patrons. To make it to the giant little restaurant is only half the battle though, you will need to make it there just after opening time or wade your way into and past the dozens, sometimes seemingly hundreds of patrons today that could make a line around the block some days. The other breakfast places in town just can't really compete with the shear volume this ever growing restaurant does in just a few hours. In time though, they will eventually need to let their own belt out a few notches just like some, if not all of the new and older patrons need to after the tour at this well rounded restaurant. This patron hopes that in time when they have grown past there potential and have taken up residence in another place in downtown Anacortes that they remember where they came from and how they've gotten there but most of all that they keep to there original recipes that made this the place what it is... We came all the way from oak harbor to come here as it had such excellent reviews, but we were very let down. At first we were seated at the counter quite quickly and they took our order within the first 5 minutes of being there, so it was off to a good start. After waiting around 45 mins + we still hadn't gotten our food, but had the joy of watching everyone else around us get theirs. When my boyfriend asked about our food the staff ran about trying to figure out where our food was. They had never actually placed our order. Basically a huge waste of time, so we left. I just can't see how you could forget about people who were sitting right there in front of you at the counter. How you could serve people who clearly hadn't even been there long at all and not see a problem in the two people who've been there the longest still not eating. read more

Meh I had the dad's breakfast plate and he had the bacon cheeseburger. I chose bacon as my side, and was excited about it because another yelper mentioned the bacon. There was lots of it on the plate and it was cooked perfectly (I am not a dry crispy bacon fan) BUT the bacon was heavily seasoned with FENNEL?! Eggs - ok, potatoes- ok. Highlight was the biscuit and raspberry jam. The burger was over cooked and a little dry BUT the meat was very flavorful. Since the burger had bacon on it, I could really taste the fennel and so I didn't particularly like it. Smoked Gorgonzola on the burger was a bit overpowering as well. Service was just ok - needed refills for most of the meal. It was busy and seemed like they could use another helping hand. If we're back in town, we'll try again though. read more

So YES! This place is OFF THE CHAIN! Don't expect to just walk in and sit down... this place gets packed! They also have a BBQ TRUCK by a he auto parts store. Ok, back to MY FAVORITE SERVER EVER! GABRIEL! I thought he might've owned the joint, or his parentS. Nope. He's just a culinary lover that KNOWS how to dissect the menu & sell their amazing food. His descriptions make me fall over and drool. Ok. So today I ordered the salad with kale, smoked bacon pieces, slow roasted tomatoes, roasted garlic, and fresh caught coho! My man got the burger with all of the fixings! This place is cozy, full of fun globes, and even had those caramel whatever candies that put grandpas always had by their lazy boys: eat here. Let me start off by saying the food is pretty good. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal when i FINALLY received it. The only downside was that it literally took an hour for my group and I to get our meals. When we got our meals they messed up two of our orders which had to be sent back to be fixed. The inconsistency within the restaurant and the fact that they are constantly out of key ingredients makes it hard to come back. read more

This is one of my Family's go to spots for quality in every department. The food is impeccably informal all of the time. A fully realized and robust cup of coffee is at hand as fast as one could need it. A brisk, but relaxed pace is the personal setting. Friendly, but not overly chatty, unless you stumble upon one of the many diverse patron's subject of passionate interest. We seem to have no trouble there... Importantly for us, our two young children [5 and 6] are always welcomed on a first name basis and made to feel equal and respected in every way. I kept swearing under my breath while eating the best Reuben I've ever had - it was that good! Can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu. They make all of their stuff in-house! Real food. Our waiter was friendly and kind - and even unnecessarily apologetic for a slight wait which was 100% understandable. I had high hopes. The food was above average but the survive was rude and ordering is awkward enough to really disappoint. We asked for menus but apparently they don't have menus, so you get to awkwardly walk up to this menu on the wall, right above somebody's head and figure out what to order and return to your table. As awkward as this is its not nearly as awkward as waiting for a menus and than after asking being told rudely that it's on the wall with a rude reply "it's the biggest menu in town" We had our infant there and after about thirty minutes of being there they asked us to move to another table, if ya have a baby you know this isn't easy task after being settled in. Wow! Some quote polarized reviews of this place..... So I gotta add my two cents ;) The restaurant is a diner style setup with lots of fun kitch on the walls. Everything looked clean. I had a good experience with the service I received and the food I got. I ordered just basic bacon & eggs, they had gluten free toast (yay!) and home fries. Service was good - my coffee cup was never empty and the owner and waitress were appropriately friendly & courteous. The bacon was excellent, they cut and smoke it in their own smoker. The eggs & potatoes were likewise good. I will definitely return here for breakfast when I'm working in town. read more

Their Reuben is the best Reuben I've ever had, period: homemade, spicy dressing, sauerkraut, loaded with your choice of pastrami or corned beef (I get the pastrami). Fries are thick, chunky slices of spud fried to perfection; the kind with that perfect greasy crunch at the start washes down by warm, velvety soft potato inside. This place is the bomb! Stopped here randomly as we were strolling through downtown Anacortes with some out of town family. We were genuinely surprised and happy with our choice of place to grab a bite to eat. I had the BLT - bacon was on point! My husband had the hash and would stop raving about it and the creamy horseradish sauce that accompanied it. My in laws had the green chile stew and Philly I believe. Even brought a bottle of the hot sauce back to California! This is the perfect place to go when you want a good solid meal!
