I had the carnitas platter. Everything was nice and hot. To include the hash-browns, i always feel those style of potatoes come cold. But not here! The meat was flavored really well. Eggs cooked just right. Kiddo had mac and cheese w fruit. The mac was in point! So cheesy and creamy! Hubs had tamales with potato's and eggs. The tamales for him had to much masa and the masa was not flavored well. It did come with a sauce in top. He just scrapped out the filling and ate it with everything else. Staff were good. read more

We were hungry and looking for a place for brunch to eat on a Sunday in Anacortes. Overall I was quite disappointed at the quality of food. The service was okay. There was no sign-in for the wait list and it seemed very disorganized. Understandably, they were short-staffed. I ordered strawberry crepes from the special menu and didn't find it very enjoyable for $16. The portion is small and honestly I think I would've gone to iHOPS instead if I wanted crepes. There was just too much cream cheese to crepes ratio and the strawberry sauce leaked into the eggs so it ruined the taste of it. Fortunately they were able to replace my eggs but the eggs tasted really mediocre. I don't think the price and value is worth it for me to come back. read more

We stopped in while waiting for some of the stores to open. We were seated right away and the "drink server" took care of our initial wants. However, we had a little wait before we saw our server to order. However, she was friendly and efficient. The food was good. It was served hot and fresh. We loved the location of it. The wait to get in was good, after I got in I had to wait with almost no one there to order my food for 1/2 hour. Was by myself maybe that's why no attention but was in the bar area table for two. I ordered a happy breakfast and it was anything but. The poached egg I ordered medium light (white cooked not the yolk) came back like a rubber egg with maybe a drop of yolk even moist - so just shy of a hard boiled egg. The bacon came back sort of like I ordered crispy - but it was chewy not crunchy - and the pancake was actually rubbery (not sure how that is possible, but true) and was tasteless except for the syrup added. It's sad when going to Macdonald's is better and maybe would digest easier. The coffee is outrageously expensive at @ $4 ! The food moderate $. The atmosphere is cute though and great view of Main Street. BUT with so many great restaurants in Anacortes and other near areas, I would suggest trying somewhere else. read more

While on a recent trip to Whidbey Island, we stopped at both of the Island Cafe locations - this one and the one in Oak Harbor. When on vacation, I love to find a restaurant that serves a high quality good ol' American breakfast - and this place does a pretty good job with that. The restaurant itself is clean and inviting, centrally located on a downtown street corner, and has the expected seaside town ambience. We were greeted promptly and seated quickly by an eager, enthusiastic, and clearly newly employed young woman and our more experienced server was friendly and pleasant. After browsing the extensive menu of diner favorites, I opted for a ground chuck steak done medium, along with hash browns, two eggs over easy, and white toast; my companion went with a veggie omelet and a side patty of sausage. The food arrived within ten minutes and was pretty much everything we expected it would be. The portions were generous, the hash browns were tasty, and my eggs were served as requested. The ground chuck steak was likely of the food service variety, but well cooked and I enjoyed it with some A-1 sauce. According to my friend, her omelet and sausage patty (from frozen) were fine, if unremarkable. And the final check for two was something like $40 - more than reasonable for the meal we enjoyed. All in all, breakfast was tasty, filling, and certainly better than a Denny's or a Shari's would have been for the same meal. For a locally owned establishment, I expected the food to be a little more unique or memorable than it was but, for a diner-type breakfast enjoyed while traveling, there's really nothing to complain about at the Island Cafe. read more

Green peppers are crunchy the rest excellent. The Bacon was thin and crunchy. I favor Thick Cut Bacon. THE English muffin is good as well. But over all this meal is above average, the Restaurant is clean, over 1/2 empty of customers. That can be improvedwith Better Advertising. Island cafe has been in Anacortes for as long as I can remember. However, it used to be much better. Now it cost you 20+ dollars to get a classic normal breakfast. I know it is a family owned business but they are screwing their servers who are not family out of tips. The cost of food is so high there for average at best quality food, it makes it really tough to want to tip more for the server. I am sad to say but I will not be returning to island cafe until they lower their prices to a more reasonable standard that matches the quality of their food. read more

We stopped in today expecting good diner food because we'd eaten here before (before Covid) and it was very good. Today was not very good to the point that we won't be back. This was also sort of a special thing for my son's birthday. He and his sister chose it based upon their previous experience. We were seated quickly. We were slow deciding what to get but we were literally the ONLY customers in the entire place, so it shouldn't have been a big deal. There were several eye rolls from the waiter though. The food didn't take long to get. We got the following which I will review independently. -water: the glasses had weird stuff floating in the bottom. Some may have been coffee grounds but others definitely weren't. The waiter brought us new glasses and they also had stuff floating around. -Me, chili burger with a side salad. The lettuce in the salad was fresh but the tomatoes weren't. The texture was like they'd been cut up and sitting in the fridge for two or three days. The onion was pretty tired too. The burger arrived and looked pretty good. There's a lot of bragging about their flame broiled juicy burgers etc. Yeah, not so much. The chili tasted good but the texture of the burger was extremely off-putting and that doesn't even cover the flavor. The flavor...well, there almost wasn't any. There didn't seem to be any seasoning at all. The chili couldn't cover how bad this was. Others were saying that it tasted like those cheap pre-made patties you get frozen. I don't know, I don't use them. I took two bites and gave one to my husband because I couldn't believe what I was tasting. I couldn't eat any more of it. They removed the cost of this from our bill. -Husband, chicken fried steak with home fries and scrambled eggs. This is probably my husband and my favorite breakfast ever. He gave me a bite of his. Yuck. Weird tasting and not terribly flavorful. The gravy was lacking pretty much any flavor one expects in that dish. The home fries tasted gross and old. The scrambled eggs, they seemed like the kind you pour from a bottle and then like they'd sat under a heat lamp all day until someone ordered scrambled eggs. Again, zero flavor aside from a hint of egg. As soon as that essence of egg disappeared, it was replaced with a subtle, yet weird flavor that shouldn't ever go with eggs. Almost like it had somehow come into contact with a sprinkle of dishwater. -Daughter, scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, sour dough. -eggs: same as above -sausage links: the taste was good, they seemed fine -hash browns: not crisp, no seasoning -sour dough: she said that the bread quality was poor and they served it with the barest of toasting Like, they ran it through a hot room and called it good. - Son, garlic prawns and chicken strips, French fries. -the "prawns" were just the larger sized shrimp that are sold only as "shrimp" anywhere you buy them. They had a somewhat fishy taste - not good with supposedly fresh food. -chicken strips were okay. He said he'd had much better at many other places. The final thing: My son always manages to drink one liquid creamer pod any time we go out. So he's sneaked his creamer pod and suddenly he's making weird, shocked faces...the creamer was bad. It had gone sour. I kid you not. None of the rest of us ran into this, but on the other hand, we were dumping it into the coffee and didn't stop to taste so maybe we missed it. I don't know. The coffee was just diner coffee. Not the worst, not the best I've had. So, I don't know what's happened between now and pre-covid, but I cannot recommend this place on any level. I don't think I've ever had such a completely well-rounded bad experience anywhere before and I've had some doozies over the years. My son was also upset for an additional reason beyond the food being gross and the weird attitude of the waiter. We don't go out that often and even though this was just a diner, it was still special to him because our outing was for his 19th birthday. He was sadly upset because of all the food wasted and how disappointing it was, all the money wasted, and that I couldn't eat anything. He asked me to please go talk to them because of how awful this was. While we were talking about how to say this to the staff, my husband, who had left the table for a few moments, came back and he had already talked to them. First time here. We came in and got seated right away at a nice window booth. Was asked right away what we would like to drink. The selection was great and prices very reasonable compared to some other places on town. I got their Chorizo with corn tortillas. It was delicious. Been passing by for over a decade so decided to finally try breakfast. Ordered the eggs Benedict. First the Hollandaise was pale and I'd guess from a very unloved can. It had little to offer and they would have done better to simply not have this on the menu at all. The ham was excellent, the hash browns and English muffin okay. Service was good and friendly, though when they brought the checkout machine the tip,options STARTED at 20%. I would have probably tipped 25%, but when forced it gives me a bad feeling. The tip is MY choice, not yours. So my choice now was to give the 20% and put them on at least a year probation before trying them again, if ever. I do not like this gesture, even though I feel tip rates should generally be higher. Definitely not the right approach for my sensibilities. read more

Came here for brunch and had a great meal. Kicked off with a pineapple mimosa which was fantastic and my new way of doing mimosas from here in. For food I got a crab and mushroom omelette special of the day that had hollandaise over the top of it. There was a lot of crab in the omelette and the mushrooms added a nice mixture of flavor to the dish. Crispy hashbrowns came out perfectly as crisped but not burnt. Wanted to get breakfast and decided to come here, to say the least I should've drove off island. In my opinion it's overpriced for what it's worth the food was subpar French toast was dry and had no flavor I fear the bacon had taken all the flavor because it was beyond salty. Server seemed uninterested to see how our meal was and walked by us every time without bothering to take a few seconds and ask how the meal was, asked for a glass of water and orange juice and ended up waiting almost 20 minutes for it to never come to which I decided to call it quits and just ask for the check. A complete waste of my hard earned cash! Biscuits were like steamed or something, gravy was some of the worst I've ever had, pretty sure it was from a can as it would be difficult to "make" this stuff, THE WORST! I could not taste any sort of meat in this gravy, canned gravy may have been an upgrade. Eggs are eggs, pretty hard to mess them up, I will not be returning as I can expect disappointments such as this throughout their menu.
