I stopped by here 2 nights ago with my father for an evening treat. We were walking home from dinner and happened to pass Da Kine Shave Ice when we decided to stop. This shop is located right across from the Kamaole I beach. The inside is fun as they have a lot of merchandise for sale and most of it is loud and bright with an array of colors. They also have a big menu board on the wall with numerous flavors. Their specials all seemed to be combinations of three different flavors with a scoop of ice cream on the bottom. For my shave ice on this day I went with ube, lilikoi, and coconut. It took somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes from ordering until I had it and was on my way back to our condo. As I walked back I was able to try it. Starting with the ice itself, it was fairly finely shaved but I did get a few larger pieces. The flavors all tasted decent and were good representations of what they were supposed to be, even if they weren't made from real fruit puree. I enjoyed it for a few bites but the overall sweetness quickly caught up to me. About halfway through my regular size I had to stop eating it because it became too sweet for my taste. That is of course a personal preference and if you like a sweeter shave ice, this could be a good option for you. The bottom line for me is that I probably would not stop by here again in the future. My shave ice ended up being a bit too sweet for my palate and I would rather go somewhere that better matches my taste. read more

I went with a kid-size (perfect portion) and mixed banana, blue vanilla, and dreamsicle flavors with a snow cap on top. The stand is tucked off the road, attached to the side of a gas station, so it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Was less than a mile from where we were staying, and it wasn't too busy, which was really nice. We got we got the lava flow and Kihei Sunset. The ice was so finally shaving. It was really good and there was a lot of syrup in sauce on top. The decor was also nice and colorful and fair amount of seating inside and out. We got two regulars for two adults at the toddler and that was a little bit much next time you might do one regular and one kid size. We love coming here after spending the day at the beach. It's a little extra treat for us before driving home upcountry. The ice is like soft ice flakes, the flavors are yummy. The 3 size options are nice too. The girls, are always so friendly and actually remember us. It's the one stop shopping center where you can get gas, shop at the ABC store, rent some snorkel gear and grab a shave ice...and it's all walking distance from the beach which is directly across the street. This was our fourth and least impressive shave I've stop on our tour de shave ice through Maui. Some loss of stars include the consistency of the shave ice (was not as powdery as my top pics) and the fact that we asked for just the three flavors of the Maui Island and no ice cream but were charged for the ice cream and the milk. That was weird and unfortunate as we would have just said the three flavors listed but thought we were pretty clear. Plus for the amount of flavors and the option for dye free or sugar free! When you come to Hawaii, you have to get some shave ice! And if you are in Kihei, you should try this place, and you should get the Kihei Sunset! If you are like me and grew up with snow cones, you may think these are similar but you would be so wrong! These are so much better!! I was happy to have discovered shave ice but also very upset because the snow cone purveyors stole so much of my money for so many years because I think they just took a lazy person's approach to what should have been shave ice. Shave ice is fluffy and airy, and like their sign says, it melts in your mouth but more immediately than snow cones. The Kihei Sunset comes with some amazing tropical flavors and some vanilla ice cream at the bottom. SO GOOD!! So why only 4 stars? They don't have mochi! There is another more famous shave ice place which seems to have mochi so I will reserve that star until I try that place. read more
