Great flavor options and super quick to get. Not much more you could ask for from a shave ice place
Adding 5 stars for the lovely your girl that served us our snow. She was all by herself making Hawaiian snows for us working hard. We arrived about 40 mins before closing. She didn't rush us out and we finished a few minutes after closing. We thought the Hawaiian snow was flavorful. I had pog, mango and orange dream cycle. The fresh flavors and I added haupia ice cream on the bottom. We will be back.
One of the best shaved ice places we tried in Maui! The flavors were so good. We had cotton candy and orange creamsicle. The dole soft serve was great too!! Definitely get the sweet cream on the shaved ice! We ate it all by the time we walked back to our car.
The cutest little shaved ice spot I've ever been to! I went with the small size, but wow, it was huge--way more than I expected! The small is definitely big enough to share, so if you're with a friend or two, definitely try ordering two instead of one. I decided to eat inside rather than outside, which turned out to be a smart choice. My ice lasted much longer than most because of it. I can only imagine if I had stepped outside in that Hawaiian heat and humidity, my shaved ice would have melted in about two seconds! What really makes this place special is their flavors--they're all made with real sugar cane, and there's such a wide variety to choose from. I had the hardest time picking, but finally decided to make my own mix: tigers blood, coconut, and blue raspberry. It was the perfect combination of tropical sweetness and refreshing flavors! Another cool thing about their shaved ice is that you get to choose up to three flavors, so make sure you take full advantage of that and experiment with different combinations. You can create your perfect flavor profile, This place is definitely a must-try for anyone looking to cool off and indulge in a sweet, refreshing treat!
Overpriced melted ice... It was a huge disappointment when Surfing Monkey was the first shave ice spot we got on our trip. Flavor: Common tropical flavors of all other places. I had guava, and lychee which were quite good. Guava: tangy and refreshing, lychee: sweet and a little mild. HOWEVER, hear me out guys... it was not a windy day, but after less than 3 mins after eating, it started to melt... a lot. It got worse from then, within 5-7 mins, I was holding a bowl of ice. In fact, everyone in my family had bowls of sweet water, not shave ice anymore. With the price they charge (higher than most places with similar portion; they also charge extra for sweet cream - condensed milk, while others give out for free), I was honestly disappointed. The only good thing about it is that they let you sample the syrup (just the syrup, no ice added) while most shave ice location in Maui don't allow you to sample.
When you're in the area and it's a really hot day after spending time on the beach, this place is a good spot to chill outside to cool yourself. The shave ice itself, it's texture is like typical shave ice places similar to Matsumoto's shave ice in the North Shore of Oahu and many others. It's little bit on the coarse type and not powdery enough for my personal taste. But some people prefer their shave ice that way, it's a matter of personal preference.

The Small is comically large, so consider sharing if you're not too hungry. Perfect amount of syrup, plenty at the bottom. Smooth, soft ice. Near Foodland. Very quick service on a Saturday night.
Honestly crave this place from time to time and I'm so sad I don't live close by it. It's not just the shave over that makes this place great but the ice cream that the shave I've comes with 20/10!!!! The portions are huge but don't worry I'm sure you will consume it ALL. A sweet treat for sunny and non sunny days.
Personally, I think Ululani's just slaps differently, but this place isn't bad. It has all the same tropical flavors for shaved ice and ice cream, and they're generous with the servings as well. You can choose up to three flavors for shaved ice, and they offer preset specials if you can't decide on your favorite combination. I'd strongly recommend getting ice cream at the bottom of your shaved ice though, since the syrup doesn't really reach the bottom, and you're left with unflavored ice. Not the best end to your sugary treat. You can also add sweet cream to the top, or li hing powder (latter free of charge). There's some tables and seating outside.
India and Areia are friendly, funny, and make great ice! They treat like you're their best friend! Add this stop to your list and frequent it often! 7 shave ice and you get the 8th free! India is a 7th gen Hawaiian. Her family has owned Surfing Monkey 20+ years. It is a true Hawaiian shave ice shop owned by true locals! Why would you want to support anyone other?! Great shave ice and ice cream. Laid back fund atmosphere!

This shave ice spot is in the same shopping center as Foodland. Perfect place to stop for a refreshing, cool snack. Very overpriced melted ice with syrup! We went to the location by Kihei Village where there was no seating area. We got to sample a few syrups where the girl gave us a drop of each flavor on our spoon. The syrups were good individually, but not sure what happened to the ice that it melted so quickly! We didn't eat it under the sun and it wasn't even a windy. We just talked a few steps in the market area while eating and the ice melted half of the bowl!! I got 3 flavors and all of them mixed together so I couldn't taste which was which. I ended up with a bowl of mixed syrups in less than 2 minutes. I also saw on the menu that sweet cream is an additional $2.74, which was such a ripoff. Save your money and walk a few steps down the road to Peace Love Shave Ice. Their ice doesn't melt at all because it's shaved finely (without being powdery) and that doesn't leave any room for the air to get in and melt it. They also give free sweet cream. I give this Surfing Monkey Shave Ice spot 2 stars just because their syrups are good based on the 3 drops that I sampled. Please do not waste your money here. read more
Surfing Monkey Shave Ice is a delightful treat. Located in the Maui Market as a kiosk of sorts. The staff was friendly and helpful with a recommendation of the tropical heaven flavor and we always go with a scoop of ice cream in the shave ice as we feel it's better this way. The flavors were delicious and the ice was shaved to perfection. It is one of many shave ice locations in Kihei, and all seem to be pretty much the same as far as quality and taste. I'm still searching for one as good as Aoki on Oahu however. But, that said, surfing monkey fills the void for now. read more

I left chilly LA with a high of 55 and overcast today for the sunny, humid 88-degree day of Maui! What a difference!! We passed by this place to get to our lunch spot, and being so stinking hot, we decided to go get some world famous snow cones in maui. I ordered a small surfing monkey, which included a mixture of cherry, banana, and pina colada. You have the opportunity to add the sweet cream for an extra charge, I didn't, and sorely regretted it. My friend got one with the sweet cream, and it just adds depth and layers of sweetness and adds to the thickness of the treat. But anyways the serving size for a small is more on par with the large. Ice is soft and fluffy. No large hard chunks or anything. Sugary liquids were well flavored. It tasted really good!! Made walking around in the hot, humid day a little bit more bearable!! read more
Monkey see, monkey do... and we did the ice cream thing! This ice cream and shaved ice shop was pretty sweet. The servers were friendly and generous with their portions! At first I thought, wow, $6.72 for one scoop, but then I saw the size of the scoops! I asked for mine in a larger cup, because the ones they serve the ice cream in overflow over the sides. Trust me on that one... ask for a bigger cup. I chose the mint chip which was tasty, but not the best I've ever had. My friends got strawberry, caramel, and the Kona Coffee ice cream, which seemed to be a fav flavor. We also saw patrons getting the shaved ice, big balls of ice soaked in colorful flavors and they looked like a bursting rainbow! We sat in the chairs outside the shop, and relished our treats and as the earth backed way from the sun, we bid ahola to the man in the moon! read more
Can't go wrong with shaved ice in Maui! Easy walk up shack booth with a wide array of flavors. I got Root Beer and Mango and of course added the cream - it's a must! Very yummy and would come back. They also have a couple of seats as well so you can sit down and enjoy your ice. read more

We were looking for shave ice after a long day of driving and saw that this spot was still open at around 8:30 so we rushed over. This location is next to a Foodland so the parking area was pretty big. We got in and it wasn't too busy. The staff was pretty friendly when we got in. We ordered two passion, guava, and mango shave ices (I think its called the Tropical Heaven) with sweet cream on both. They worked pretty fast and we were out the door in about 5ish minutes. Their shave ice is pretty solid. Good quality shave, soft and no big ice pieces or anything. They weren't lacking in the syrups or sweet cream either. Really hit the spot after dinner. It's worth a shot coming here, especially if you're nearby. read more
Really good shaved ice. When I compare to Ululani's I liked their Tiger's blood flavor better. I wished they had Ube flavor like we got at Ululani. I think Surfing Monkey has the best coconut ice cream. It was delicious and I prefer it over Ululani's. read more

My daughter and I are here from CA and this is our last night. We went in 15 minutes before closing, and stood in line behind another couple. No one in sight, but doors wide open with customers eating inside. 10 mins before closing appears the worker girl. She asks us to leave as they already closed. Very disappointing, not in missing the shaved ice but the ONLY bad customer service on the entire island. read more
I think this was probably one of the most disappointing shaved ices I've had in Maui. As you can see in the picture, there was far too much ice and no holes, which means that the syrup stayed at the top and did not go to the bottom of the shaved ice. Our cashier was a bit impatient, asking us multiple times if we were ready to order when we were still trying to figure out what flavors we wanted. We ordered flavors such as cherry, tiger's blood, and passion fruit. Yet I could hardly tell which part of the shaved ice was what flavor. Instead, I just tasted syrup that was far too sweet while most of the globs of ice were syrup-less. I think that it comes down to not poking enough holes in the shaved ice, and also the syrups themselves. The best part about the shaved ice was the ice cream at the bottom, but because there was so much shaved ice to eat around, we didn't get to the ice cream until it was melted. I think if you're visiting here, it's best to get a smaller size and ask them not to pack too much ice. read more
