I can only imagine if I had stepped outside in that Hawaiian heat and humidity, my shaved ice would have melted in about two seconds! The Surfing Monkey gave us the answer... ...it's the worst shave ice we've ever had and the most expensive: - Low quality ice - Flavored syrups taste artificial - Only vanilla ice cream available (you get a small scoop.) Overpriced melted ice... It was a huge disappointment when Surfing Monkey was the first shave ice spot we got on our trip. Flavor: Common tropical flavors of all other places. I had guava, and lychee which were quite good. Guava: tangy and refreshing, lychee: sweet and a little mild. HOWEVER, hear me out guys... it was not a windy day, but after less than 3 mins after eating, it started to melt... a lot. It got worse from then, within 5-7 mins, I was holding a bowl of ice. In fact, everyone in my family had bowls of sweet water, not shave ice anymore. With the price they charge (higher than most places with similar portion; they also charge extra for sweet cream - condensed milk, while others give out for free), I was honestly disappointed. The only good thing about it is that they let you sample the syrup (just the syrup, no ice added) while most shave ice location in Maui don't allow you to sample. read more

The shave ice itself, it's texture is like typical shave ice places similar to Matsumoto's shave ice in the North Shore of Oahu and many others. Personally, I think Ululani's just slaps differently, but this place isn't bad. It has all the same tropical flavors for shaved ice and ice cream, and they're generous with the servings as well. You can choose up to three flavors for shaved ice, and they offer preset specials if you can't decide on your favorite combination. I'd strongly recommend getting ice cream at the bottom of your shaved ice though, since the syrup doesn't really reach the bottom, and you're left with unflavored ice. Very overpriced melted ice with syrup! We went to the location by Kihei Village where there was no seating area. We got to sample a few syrups where the girl gave us a drop of each flavor on our spoon. The syrups were good individually, but not sure what happened to the ice that it melted so quickly! We didn't eat it under the sun and it wasn't even a windy. We just talked a few steps in the market area while eating and the ice melted half of the bowl!! I got 3 flavors and all of them mixed together so I couldn't taste which was which. I ended up with a bowl of mixed syrups in less than 2 minutes. I also saw on the menu that sweet cream is an additional $2.74, which was such a ripoff. Save your money and walk a few steps down the road to Peace Love Shave Ice. Their ice doesn't melt at all because it's shaved finely (without being powdery) and that doesn't leave any room for the air to get in and melt it. They also give free sweet cream. I give this Surfing Monkey Shave Ice spot 2 stars just because their syrups are good based on the 3 drops that I sampled. Please do not waste your money here. read more

The staff was friendly and helpful with a recommendation of the tropical heaven flavor and we always go with a scoop of ice cream in the shave ice as we feel it's better this way. The flavors were delicious and the ice was shaved to perfection. It is one of many shave ice locations in Kihei, and all seem to be pretty much the same as far as quality and taste. We passed by this place to get to our lunch spot, and being so stinking hot, we decided to go get some world famous snow cones in maui. I ordered a small surfing monkey, which included a mixture of cherry, banana, and pina colada. You have the opportunity to add the sweet cream for an extra charge, I didn't, and sorely regretted it. My friend got one with the sweet cream, and it just adds depth and layers of sweetness and adds to the thickness of the treat. But anyways the serving size for a small is more on par with the large. Ice is soft and fluffy. No large hard chunks or anything. Sugary liquids were well flavored. It tasted really good!! Made walking around in the hot, humid day a little bit more bearable!! read more

We ordered two passion, guava, and mango shave ices (I think its called the Tropical Heaven) with sweet cream on both. They worked pretty fast and we were out the door in about 5ish minutes. Their shave ice is pretty solid. Good quality shave, soft and no big ice pieces or anything. They weren't lacking in the syrups or sweet cream either. Really hit the spot after dinner. I think this was probably one of the most disappointing shaved ices I've had in Maui. As you can see in the picture, there was far too much ice and no holes, which means that the syrup stayed at the top and did not go to the bottom of the shaved ice. Our cashier was a bit impatient, asking us multiple times if we were ready to order when we were still trying to figure out what flavors we wanted. We ordered flavors such as cherry, tiger's blood, and passion fruit. Yet I could hardly tell which part of the shaved ice was what flavor. Instead, I just tasted syrup that was far too sweet while most of the globs of ice were syrup-less. I think that it comes down to not poking enough holes in the shaved ice, and also the syrups themselves. The best part about the shaved ice was the ice cream at the bottom, but because there was so much shaved ice to eat around, we didn't get to the ice cream until it was melted. I think if you're visiting here, it's best to get a smaller size and ask them not to pack too much ice. read more
