Met up with some friends for hot pot on a fairly hot day. One half pot of Maia spicy which I didn't bother to try as I value my stomach and behind and our side which was pork bone with medium spicy. Another table had tomato and mushroom with no spice whatsoever. The tomato was base soup was actually very tasty. Aside from the soup base everything else is self serve and at the end they count the sticks to see what your charge is. I felt the meat sticks for $0.87 cents were kinda a ripoff since it was a little piece of meat at the end of the stick. Skewers as of summer 2024 is 45 cents per skewer, but some of the meat ones have two sticks in them (so they are double that, for one item). Also, if you get tofu and veggies and other things, those can add up quickly. They also have a sauce bar that's pretty solid - the shredded potatoes are delicious and also has a sneaky kick to them. I discovered that a corn I got was no good (It felt like it was starting to rot), so they took that off the tab. This place is amazing! Everything here is such high quality. You pick a base combo (their pots are half-and-half style) and then self-serve the meats, veggies, etc! They have them all labeled with different colors for the tray items (each color tray is a specific price), and each stick item is 50 cents (some stick items have two sticks in them and are $1). We got a variety of stick items so we could try more things, along with some baby cabbage. My favorites overall were the beef skewers, particularly the pineapple beef and leek with beef. My favorite part of the meal, however, has to be the sides. Usually, at hot pot places, the sides are there to just fill you up. However, these sides are freshly homemade (the shredded potatoes remind me of my mom's cooking) and such high quality! We kept going back for more. Our party was hungry and eager to eat hotpot and this place closes pretty late so it was a perfect option for us. I am pretty particular about my hotpot and my go to broths are mala and tomato. Even though we got the mild mala, it had a good amount of spice to it which was good. Tomato soup was balances of sour, sweet and salty. The service is a bit lacking since everything is selfserved. It was our first time here so we were not sure how things go. You basically get sat and the only thing the servers help you with is ordering the soups. Then you grab all your toppings, sauce, and drinks which are on the right side of the restaurant. You can also refill your own soup with the kettles that are near the sauce bar. The sauce bar was almost empty when we got there so you do kinda have to keep an eye out when the restock the toppings, sauces, and fruits and make a beeline for it. Each stick is a few cents but they do add up. Meat trays were understandably the more expensive options. They had so many different options and new things I got to try in hotpot like konjac jelly and beef intestine which were good. Spiced meats were so good in the soup! And I always get sweet potato mung bean noodles. I do wish they had more veggie options though. This was a very cool concept for skewers! You should definitely come and experience it. When you first get seated, they will explain to you the process. You order your broth and then go to the self serve area to pick your vegetables and skewers. They charge $0.40 per skewer stick (some meats have two sticks) and charge a set amount for vegetables, noodles, and other dishes depending on the color of letters on the tray. The trays can range from $3.95 to $16.95 each depending on what you pick. There is also a set broth charge for the table of $12.99 and a $1.99 per person charge for the sled serve sauce bar (which includes peanuts, chips, seaweed salad, and watermelon). We got the half tomato and half spicy pork tallow (medium spicy) for the broth. My fiance enjoyed the tomato broth very much and I enjoyed the spicy pork tallow. I chose the beef skewers, sausages, bamboo, broccoli, fish cake tofu, and a few other dishes. They were all really tasty. Service was great. Located in the Jade Plaza, this is the only shop that's open in there. Pretty cool concept, but the price of everything adds up if you're not paying attention. Essentially, you're automatically paying $13 for the soup base (per pot), plus an additional $2/person for the self serve sauce station. Each skewer is $0.40, but some of the skewers (mainly the beef skewers) have 2 skewers in them, signifying $0.80/skewer. They also have trays of veggies, meat and seafood, and the prices of these are color-coded. You go up and grab whatever items you like, and after you're done, someone will come and tally up all the trays/bowls/skewer sticks. Majority of the items in the fridge are labeled in Chinese. If you don't know how to read Chinese, it might be tricky trying to figure out the marinated meat skewers. The beef-wrapped pickled veggie skewers were tender and my favorite. So we were really excited to finally see something occupying the plaza since so many places closed down during Covid. Da Bin Jia is a skewer hot pot restaurant with lots of different skewers that you boil in the hot pot. Skewer hotpot originated in the city of Chengdu in China's Sichuan province, and have been popular since the 1980s. There's a wall of fridge filled with all sorts of self serve hot pot items and there's also a self serve dipping sauce station. I like the self serve concept and they count up the number of color trays and sticks at the end of the meal to calculate the total bill. The spicy beef tallow soup is very spicy! I would recommend getting mild, the medium had some serious heat! Everything is labeled in Chinese, but the wait staff were very friendly and helped us with everything. We're beef eaters and the beef rolls aren't great. Honestly the skewers and trays themselves aren't mindblowing but the soup alone is enough to make us want to come back. The tomato soup is also the best we've had too. So flavorful and sweet. We also got a yogurt drink which I love =) It's the tart beijing yogurt kind and it pairs well with the spicy soup.
