My husband and I decided to keep it low key with pizza for our last night in Rome. Da Baffetto was recommended to us by one of my friends, who has yet to lead me astray on food recs. I'm pleased to say we ended this leg of the trip with a solid meal. Only thing I wish he mentioned was that this place was cash only. Good thing I had Euros on hand! It was pretty busy when we arrived around 7pm, but we were seated right away when we got to the restaurant. There weren't any seats outside, which was fine by me because the sky had started to rain. We were seated at a cozy corner inside Da Baffetto. The menu was simple. Clearly pizza was there thing, so one whole front page of the menu displayed all the types of pizzas they made. There were so many that it made choosing one difficult in narrowing down, because several of them looked appetizing to me. I finally landed on the pizza vegetariana that included eggplant, zucchini, and zucchini flowers. The pizza came out very quickly, and I could see why... the crust was so thin! Best I can describe it is that it was like eating a pizza cracker. That said, I didn't feel stuffed from eating the whole thing. Normally I wouldn't be able to finish half of one. What was also impressive about the crust was its firmness and crispness. I later learned that this super thin Roman style of pizza is called pizza bassa. Anyway, my pizza was quite good. The pomodoro sauce tasted incredibly fresh, and I enjoyed the unique veggie toppings. They were certainly things I wouldn't see on a pizza in America. Da Baffetto has my stamp of approval, and I wouldn't hesitate to pay forward the recommendation. read more

Da Baffetto is a winner! Overall I was underwhelmed with the food served in Rome and Italy in general. It was actually shocking actually after all the praise about how good the food is in Italy. I tried and tried to go to the good places with little success. The one stand out (not kidding, just one) is da Baffetto. The salami was a bit tough, if I could go back, I would just get a cheese pizza. This was a good place for pizza. It was not the best pizza I've had in Italy, but not bad. We had a mixed salad and a margherita pizza. The tomatoes on the mixed salad were so fresh and delicious. In Italy, a margherita pizza is just cheese and tomato sauce, not with basil like in the US. We sat at tables outside on a cute street. Our server was nice and more attentive than waiters typically are in Italy. Crazy how simple can be so much better! Don't come here expecting anything other than the traditional Roman pizza. I had the margherita and it was delicious. No frills. Super thin dough with a light layer of sauce and cheese. My partner had the salami and fungi which was also delicious. I didn't think the service was bad at all. The place is busy. Line out the door even as it started raining. So yes, you may have to wait for a table and yes, you'll wait a bit to order and be served so don't try to squeeze this place in between reservations or tours. Relax and enjoy! read more

The employees are very rude, short, and unhelpful. I would just go somewhere else if you really want pizza. Da Baffetto is honestly not the best pizza in Rome. I've been here twice and the first time was bad and the second was just "meh". Let's start with the staff. The owner is not exactly the most charming person in the city of Rome. I've been here twice and he is always making faces at customers and kicking people out of their tables when they haven't even finished their wine. Thank God, this second time I was sited in the outside area of the restaurants, which was GREAT because nobody was pressuring us to leave. One positive thing about Da Baffetto is that they are open pretty late compared to other restaurants and their prices are really affordable. So in a way, you are getting what you paid for. This place can get really crowded and have huge lines, so don't come here if you are starving because you might have to wait for a few minutes to get in. The second time we visited, we came here around 11PM on St. Patrick's Day and were seated really quickly. read more

This review is for a pre COVID visit. What I love about Rome is that you can find many different types of pizzas to suit your mood or personal preference. The pizza at Da Baffetto is the super thin, eat with the fork kind. The place is pretty unassuming, that if you weren't looking for it you'd certainly miss it. There are also no pushy waiters standing outside convincing you to go in -- sign number one of a good place. Secondly, you'll see many locals frequent and when in Rome certainly do as the Italians do. On my multiple occasions I've only ever ordered the pizza so I can't speak to their other menu items. However, I think the pizza is what makes this place popular. It's fired in the brick oven so it comes out super quick, if there's not many other people at the restaurant. It's served piping hot in a huge pan and I do recommend you get one for yourself. They might be as big as your head but because they're so thin it's incredibly easy to eat an entire one by yourself. Don't try to pick it up with your hands since it'll fall apart pretty quickly, use a fork and nice especially if you don't want to look like a clueless tourist. The margarita pizza was incredible. The flavors fresh and authentic with a perfectly thin dough with just the right amount of charred edges for the crust. While I stayed in Rome I visited this place often and highly recommend you add it to your list! read more

Been coming to Rome regularly for over 20 years, so I've had a few pizzas there over the years to say the least. It's been 10 years since my last visit to Baffettos and a few things have changed. Despite the longer lines, they do still manage to seat you fairly quick, considering. I suggest taking the first table regardless of outside/inside. The pizza, while often described as the "best in Rome", definitely falls short of that title. While not great, or bad, it's just an average pizza pie that does not stand out for any particular reason. We had four different pies at our table, and we traded and sampled them all. Again, while good, definitely not "great", in my own opinion and that of two of our other diners. Definitely a little over-cooked with very burnt edges on all of the pies. The Margherita pie was somewhat bland and a little tasteless. The sauce had no definitive flavor and very little mozzarella to set it apart from others in Rome, and it came with only couple pieces of (not fresh) basil leaf on it - which helps to give this pizza it's distinctive flavor. The pizza capricciosa, always my favorite, did have the required egg in the middle, but was way overcooked and lacked substantial other 4 toppings that gives the unique flavor of a properly prepared and cooked capricciosa pie. Again, they both fell way short of "best pizza in Rome". The mushroom pie, well again, tasteless sauce and toppings. It does not take much to create a pizza sauce that would set apart a pizza from others, and they don't. So, while everyone wants to visit what is considered an "Institution Restaurant" in any famous city, unfortunately, Baffettos falls way short of what it may have once been. My suggestion, if it is crowded, I say skip the wait and head to another place for a pizza pie that is not burnt and has fresher toppings and more taste. "Once a hero", does not mean "Always a hero". What a shame that this once famous "institution" has become "Institutionalized". read more

What I also liked and appreciated was that they have some staff that speak languages outside of Italian and basic English (one speaks Spanish marvellously). This gem was hidden on a small street off the main road. It was much bigger than anticipated when looking from the outside. There was a dining area on the 2nd floor where lots of pictures of customers with the employees occupied the walls. The food came out in a timely matter. I ordered the pizza al salame. It contained Pomodoro, mozzarella, and hot salami. The slightly burnt thin crust was appropriate. Everything about this pizza was outstanding. The hot salami with the mozzarella along with the light Pomodoro sauce proved to be the right choice. I also tried the following pizzas that are below... Pizza With Prosciutto - This was similar to the pizza above except with the prosciutto. A solid put together pizza. Pizza with Zucchini Flowers - This contained tomato, mozzarella, and zucchini flowers. The pizza as a whole was good, but I was just not a fan of the presence of the zucchini flowers. Pizza with Mushrooms, Onions & Sausage - This was my favorite pizza I had. I am usually not a fan of mushrooms on a pizza, but I was pleased with this. I am a thin crust guy, and this place has it for sure seemed to be almost as thin as a crepe. We tried pizza everywhere we went and everyday we were in Europe and out of the many places we tried this was better than the rest. If you like your pizza with cheese only like I do be prepared to get the stink eye from the waiter, like when people want ketchup for their steak it seemed. To me cheese pizza is the way you can really see how pizza taste at the most basic level, before the can alter or hide the flavor with all the ad ons. When I eat real bbq (the stuff only found in Texas.) I never need or want sauce. Anyway this place was pretty good. I knew we would not be disappointed eating their pizza! I got the mushroom and cheese pizza. The pizzas are larger than the plate but the crust is thin and crunchy. Looking for true Roman style pizza? This place is it and legit! For those who don't know, Roman style pizza has avery thin crust (almost cracker-like texture). They have their menu in Italian, English, French, and German - Plus. Hubs ordered the Margherita pizza and I ordered the Zucchini Flower pizza. Both were buono! This place was recommended to us by both locals and tourists. We came right at opening so there was no line. We ordered a large with mozzarella, prosciutto and mushrooms. It's a very thin crust, almost cracker like and the sauce is light so it does not overpower the other flavors. Depending on how hungry you are, the large could feed 2-3 people. As others have mentioned in previous reviews, I don't think I would wait an hour to eat here. I wasn't disappointed but i wasn't wow'd either. Don't get me wrong, the pizza was good, but this place may have been overhyped for us. There are outside tables as well as tables inside, but very limited seating. My husband received a recommendation to go to this pizzeria from a client and we learned a fun fact while waiting in line, that Nicolas Cage loves this restaurant as well. It is a busy and cramped corner of a classic Roman building. The pizza was decent and my husband enjoyed it, but for me it was crispy on the edges and a soggy at the middle or tips. I have found that this is common in Rome at several places. I got the plain cheese because I ate a lot of meat the past few days and wanted to keep it simple. Way too much Gorgonzola. I visited this restaurant about 9 years ago with a group from college while studying abroad and thought it was the best pizza I had ever tasted in my life. I came back here today with my boyfriend on a trip to Rome and it was the worst experience ever. The staff is nasty. I'm sorry but there is no better word to describe them. We walked in with a Italian greeting and asked for a table for two. The inside is sad and grim with no music whatsoever playing. So we asked to sit outside. The lady at the front could barley make a grunt and could care less. We find a table outside. Soon a male waiter comes over to put paper down on the table and basically throws menus at us and leaves without even saying a single word. He seemed extremely annoyed that we where there. He comes back and we order two pizzas, two coke zeros, and a liter of water. He disappears without a word and just nastily looks at us. We somehow get our pizzas extremely quickly (less then 10 mins). They were fresh and hot. But no beverages. He finally brings us our cokes. But no water. We didn't even have time to ask because the literally threw the pizzas down on the table so aggressively my pizza slid half off the plate onto the table! At this point I was disappointed because I had talked so much about my previous experience a decade ago to my boyfriend and remember having such a wonderful time. We eat our pizzas. They were fine. Thin and crunchy. Much better than American pizza but I'm sure there is better pizza in Rome elsewhere. The kicker was the waiter came back retrieve our plates we asked for the bill. It was 22 euros. I was taking the money out of my wallet to pay. And looking for coins to make the correct change. The waiter had the nerve to come and speak his FIRST words to us during the experience. And say "tip for me. tip for me". Now we are American and as such are very good tippers. But let me tell you that man was not going to get a single cent out of me. When he realized I wasn't putting down more money he snatched the money off the table and picked up our glasses (I wasn't finished drinking my drink) and basically snarled at us with his nasty attitude. Tipping in Italy is not mandatory and if so 10-15% is generous and the fact that he wanted our money when he couldn't even say hello to us is laughable. We are a nice, polite couple in our late twenties, not obnoxious American teenagers. We have had some rude experiences with Roman hospitality staff but this took the cake! I had one request before leaving Rome: to eat traditional Roman style pizza. My Roman friend suggested Da Baffeto. I was ecstatic that my American friend's recommendation and internet search was validated by a local. I'd also like to clarify that she did not suggest this place because it is touristy, but because it is where she goes for Roman style pizza. Cracker thin and as big as a record, real pizza (not fast food pizza) from a restaurant is mainly served for dinner. Do not make the mistake of going to Da Baffetto for lunch. They will be closed. Also, it takes awhile for the wood fired ovens to heat up and boy are they hot. So hot, if you lift your pizza up to check out the crust, you will find spots of charred crust. This is normal, good, and all part of the charm. A medium versus a large pizza is not much of a difference in size. It's about a Euro difference in price. Splurge. The pizzas are personal servings and since they are so thin, you will have no problem putting it away. After all, didn't you come to Italy to eat REAL pizza? We ordered three different types of pizza- one with anchovies, one with bresaola and arugula, and one with zucchini and squash blossoms. The bresaola one also had squash blossoms on it. I found the pizza okay. I like Da Baffetto more for the ambiance. Think communal tables, long lines, and a crazy owner. He was a personality similar to that guy who serves and denies soup in the USA. The toppings on the pizza weren't evenly distributed and the sauce didn't leave much of an impression. I found it a little difficult to eat. How does one eat Roman pizza? They don't slice it for you but you do have utensils. We sort of did half and half. Sometimes tore it and ate it bit by bit, other times sliced off a triangle and folded it into something with weight on it. The food is simple at Da Baffetto. I'd definitely go to check it out. However leaving, I did ponder if it was all hype. Should I have given it four stars? This place is like going to Grimaldi's in New York City, kind of a toss up. read more

But I think you get to the front of the line if a taxi drops you off because on two occasions I saw couples get seated without waiting (to the delight of the people in line). Me? I ordered "to go". I kept it simple with a plain Margarita (cheese and tomato sauce for 6 uro) so that I can truly get there flavor. The crust had a great texture; thin, slightly crispy, and bendable. But not too much flavor on the crust itself only the char from the oven. The sauce was balanced, not too sweet and a mild tang. That was good. The cheese texture was there melted with a bit of saltiness at the start then morphed into a ricotta creamy flavor at the end. Good "take out" pizza but not an hour wait in line pizza.
