I have yet to find a place that puts a decent amount of meat inside their fried stuffed meat dumplings. This place makes the dough part well, it was crunchy and the right amount of cheesy. The inside tastes good too but it was just sooo little amounts of meat, it's so sad. Finally got a chance to check out D&D Dim Sum Bakery. I went on a Thursday around 10am and it was super quiet I think it's location is somewhat hidden . But a good opportunity for me to analyze all the many different things that they have in store. I started with the frozen freezer and it practically have every dim sum frozen. I just got a bag of Pork Shumai and Shrimp Dumplings and will try to heat up another day to see if still as good . Durian Puff (4/5) - according to wife it's different but good. There seems to be mung bean mixed into the Durian so the smell is not as strong from the outside. (I know because I can't eat Durian). Pork and Chicken Shumai (5/5)- The price for 3 major size shumai for $4.75 is a steal. Pork dumplings are good, however we're not into the chicken shumai as much (maybe the corn). Chicken feet (4/5)- good price for 4 prices of chicken feet. It was very soft and tasted just okay. As for the Big Chicken Bun and Matcha Bun we have to wait because I was full before getting to the buns. The services was quick with just one cash register. However if you haven't been there like me, you should seriously let everyone else go first because there just so much pastries to decide. This will definitely be my togo dim sum choice assuming it will be there long due to locations is somewhat hidden . A very good to go dim sum spot! Dumplings are good. They have lots of options. The best part is they sell a lot of their dim sum frozen so you can steam them fresh at home! We had them pre-cooked and also steamed some frozen ones at home. Tastes the same and comparable to the restaurants. The only caveat is each item has somewhat different steaming instructions, so I had to time things and throw things in at different times. The young lady behind the counter was nice enough. The place was quiet and seemed cleaned when we were there. We will be back to try more food from here. Har gow (shrimp dumpling) - 5/5, very good flavor and the wrapping is not too thick or doughy. I also like that the shrimp was cut up small and not too lumpy Shui mai (pork dumplings) - 5/5, very good flavor, meat is minced well without too much lumps or chewy parts Steamed bbq pork buns - 5/5, good bbq pork flavor that is not too sweet, the dough is fluffy and soft Baked bbq pork buns - 4/5, good bbq pork but just a little dry and over baked. I'm so happy we have D&D Dim Sum in Elk Grove! I was excited to hear they were opening here, especially since the owners are the same behind Dim Dim in the Pocket area. The plaza is on the smaller side, so parking can be a bit tight when that area gets busy. The interior on the other hand is fairly spacious with a small dining area. There was a small line but service is quick. They also have a frozen section, which is great if you want to stock up on dim sum, buns, and other frozen items. FOOD Pork Shumai & Shrimp Shumai - 5/5: Generous portions! 1-2 pieces are already filling. Steamed BBQ Pork Bun - 3.5/5: Not my personal favorite style. My family mentioned they've had better. Baked Crispy BBQ Pork Bun - 3.5/5: Better than the steamed version, but still just okay. Shrimp Har Gow - 4/5: Good Fried Shrimp Ball - 4/5: My son really enjoyed these. Service was quick and direct. Not very welcoming so read the menu ahead of time to know what you want to go in prepared. Located in a corner strip mall next to a donut shop. There was plenty of parking. The food is good. I had the shrimp dumpling, pork dumplings, baked bbq pork bun, rice roll with beef and Portuguese egg tarts. It came with soy sauce and chili oil which add a good heat. The shrimp dumplings were full of shrimp with a thin wrapper. The pork dumplings had a lot of meat but did have a good amount of gristle which wasn't great but the flavor of the pork was good. And size of dumpling for the price was on point! My family is always going to the location in Pocket (Dim Dim), so I'm glad to have had D & D open closer to home. I tried the Egg Custard Pineapple Bun, "Big Chicken Bun", and Sticky Rice. Everything was good and I'd reorder in the future. I cut open the big chicken bun and was caught off guard by the corn surprise. (In addition to chicken mixture, it contained sausage, egg and corn. The Egg Custard Pineapple Bun pleasantly surprised me, as it actually had bits of pineapple in it. (There was red paper on the bottom, and it when I tried to pull it off, I noticed it was leaving small remnants of red paper behind, so be careful to get it all off.) Also enjoyed the sticky rice - great flavor! They said they didn't make one of the items I was planning to order (the purple yam bun), so just beware they don't make all the items on their menu every day, it appears. D&D Dim Sum Bakery is the same owner as Dim Dim Food in Pocket. The owner/manager told me that they were opening a new location in Elk Grove and I'm here for it! The set up, food items, frozen section and pink boxes are all very familiar as you walk in the store, like the Pocket location. I'm not sure if they will leave that big front space open or have other plans. Maybe a few dine in tables and chairs? Right now, it's take-out only. I initially came in for the congee and fried dough but it was sold out! I should have known better because it was 1:30 pm on a Sunday. That didn't stop me from buying a bunch of dim sum and pastries to take home. I really like their egg tarts, har gow (shrimp dumpling), and vegetable meat steamed buns. These are the usual items that I will pick up and they always hit the spot. I usually get the beef rice roll and shui mai for my son. However, I haven't tried their baked egg custard pineapple bun. I saw a picture from another Yelper that they have custard inside (v. traditional pineapple bun does not) and I have to try it. It did not disappoint. It taste even better if you toast it or heat it up for 10-15 seconds. Big portion - almost the size of my hand. The custard is lightly sweeten with creamy texture. Don't forgot to check out the frozen section. I buy their Veg Meat Bun to keep in my freezer. Sometimes, I want hot steamed bun for breakfast when I'm tired of eating eggs or oatmeal. $10.75 for 6 buns - that's a good deal. I've also purchased their Special Items - Lamb Stew with Tofu Skin is not bad. I like to have it in my freezer for those days that I don't have the energy or time to cook. Everyone was excited about having a dim sum to-go bakery the way Pocket has ABC Bakery. When I arrived on a weekday, the line was to the door and took a while to get to my turn. There are frozen/refrigerated items sold at reasonable prices to the side. The main show, though, was their pastry case and hot foods, ready to eat. Portuguese Egg Tart 5/5* First off, the sweet tantalizing smell hit me as soon as I opened the box, which smelled so good it had me drooling and excited to take a bite. Wow! The shell was incredibly flaky and buttery with multiple layers of perfected crispiness. The top of the custard was scattered with broiled toastyness as a basque cheesecake would look. The custard though!! The egg custard was extremely rich and silky smooth with a great balance of slightly sweet and hints of vanilla. It felt like eating a creme brulee. This was my favorite out of all the items purchased. Deep Fried Stuffed Meat Dumpling 4/5* I love these little things and if I ever see them anywhere, I have to have them. This was no disappointment. The outer crispy layer is so thin, and the mochi-like texture of the dough to pork filling ratio is perfect. There's a good distribution of filling and it was moist and flavorful. Like all fried things, the dough soaked up some oil so I needed to dab it with paper napkins. Shrimp Dumpling (Har Gow) & Pork Shumai 5/5* Can't go wrong with the dim sum staples. D&D's version is pretty big and plump. Shumai is meaty with good flavor. Baked Crispy BBQ Bun 3/5* This was a unique take on your typical baked BBQ pork bun. It had a delicate crust on top, similar to a pineapple bun except thinner and lacey. The whole thing was bready and a bit drier inside than I'm used to. It could use more filling because the majority of the bun was just bread. Rice Noodle Roll w/ Beef 2/5* The cheung fun was fresh and soft, and the meat spread was thin enough. It didn't have a ton of flavor, which was compensated by the sweet soy sauce and chili oil. However, this was SO oily. The box itself was already greasy on the outside, and when it tipped over in my bag on the transport home, there was a pool of oil in the bag and still had more oil in the container. Ew! Green Tea Sesame Ball 1/5* My least favorite out of everything. It was so greasy, I felt gross eating it, even after I wrapped it in napkins to get the excess oil out. The sesame inside is very subtle and not nutty at all. The green dough had no flavor at all. No doubt I would get my Portuguese Egg Tarts from here on out. The quality is on par with those you'd get from SF. The other items I'd like to try, but noticed the pricing isn't very competitive. Frozen items are more bang for your buck, but the ready-to-eat foods are almost as much as eating at a regular dim sum restaurant if you calculate per piece. I'm not saving enough to bypass the experience of ordering from carts. My first sampling of D&D was hit or miss. Not sure if I'll be back anytime soon, unless I'm craving for egg tarts. read more

This place only has been opened for a few days. Came in to give them a try. D & D is more of a take out place. They have a some cold bagged items that you can purchase, that you can cook at home. I ordered a variety of things. I wanted to try their congee, but they were out. I ordered some egg tarts, fried pork dumplings, turnip cake, steamed char su bun, and a fried taro dumpling. The steamed items are kept warm, but the fried items and baked items are not; room temperature. There is a small area where they can set up tables to dine in. Maybe in the future, when they are more settled in. There were two people working the counter. They looked a little unorganized, but nice and helpful. Parking can be challenging, if the things get busy. It is a small shared parking lot with the other shops. There are a limited amount of spaces. We took our order home to eat. I tried the fried taro dumpling first. It had a crispy outside, which was surprising notice it was cold already. It still had a nice crunch when you bit into it. The meat filling was pretty good, but there was a small weird, either it was a smell or taste. I don't know how to explain it, but it was not good. I think it might have been an oil after taste or something. The turnip cake was ok. The fried pork dumplings were the same, ok. They were soft and cold, not crispy anymore. The steamed buns were still warm when we got home. They were pretty good. The bun itself was soft, but chewy. The filling tasted good. I think the best item was the egg tarts. The egg custard tasted really fresh, light, smooth, and the texture was made well. That was the highlight of the items we got. I would give this place another try later on. They feature typical dim sum items like sui mai, hargow, steamed dumplings, lobster balls, and pork ribs in black beans sauce just to name a few items I've tried. They also have baked items like egg tarts, pineapple buns, as well as baked and steamed pork buns. The quality is pretty good. Their dimsum items are tasty and they don't skimp on their ingredients. Some places might have a lot of dough but very little filling for their pork buns. my two favorite items are the pineapple bun and the egg tarts. Their pineapple bun has bits of real pineapple in it. The egg tarts have a wonderfully flaky crust, and the custard is just the right sweetness and consistency. Sadly, their service isn't as good as their food. I will put up with poor service if the food is good enough. In my opinion, this is worth going to for food. The times I've been there the place wasn't particularly busy. However, the staff always made me feel like I was taking too long to put my order in. I always make sure I know what I'm going to order before stand in line because I never want to hold up the queue. They're curt and will interrupt you while you're ordering. On my last visit I ordered deep fried shrimp balls and they come three to an order. They only had two left in the case and the staff member said they were frying up a new batch so she gave me the two that was in the case. When the fresh batch came out, she gave me one fresh shrimp ball. I asked her if I could get three fresh ones instead of two stale ones, and a fresh one and she said no. Rude! Well I saw one of my Elite friends, Ashley C, had checked into this place. A new Dim Sum place in Elk Grove. Had to check it out. We just finished an Elite event and headed over there. Second breakfast Hehe. The place is in a small strip mall down from Burger King. The parking lot is small but got a spot. It had a Grand Opening sign up front. Inside is small and they had several tables stacked up in the corner. It has room for a small dinning area but pure take out only for now. There were quite a few people inside waiting to order. We got some stemmed pork buns, and of course dan tat . custard tars. OMG they were cooked perfectly. Melted in my mouth with a great flaky crust. Loved them. The bao was so big. They have so much variety - baked versus steamed, fresh versus frozen, sweet and savory, etc. I came here on a Sunday and the line was pretty long, but I'd say it was worth the wait. All items are priced decently and they're pretty tasty. They run out of items so plan to come early. My favorite savory items were the shrimp dim sum (hacao), shrimp and chive or shrimp and cilantro (in my opinion - hard to taste the difference between the two), the baked bbq pork bun. My favorite item from the entire bakery was the Portuguese egg tart - it was flakey, creamy and delicious! The lady that helped us was really nice and helpful. Saw this dim sum spot on our way to the Coffee Spot so decided to try it out last weekend. It's at a very awkward place to turn into coming from the west side and the parking spot sometime can get crowded so like be prepared. If you come with other people - one person get out while the other person park to beat the line. Because it be long. There's not much inside just the dimsum counter, some fridges and a space where people just kinda form an awkward queue. I think those queue divider thing could be helpful but it's fine I guess. Don't come in hangry. On Sunday we waited about 30 minutes in line. What's good is you tell them what you want and whatever they have you can get right away so it's not too bad afterwards. We got a good variety of things. I wanted the stuff tofu skin but that was out - and even the shrimp rice roll was only a couple left so if you like some popular item you better come early. What I like is the rice roll came with the sweet soy sauce . Some places that have this concept like in SF give you rice roll sauceless - like what is the point. We enjoyed the shrimp roll and it was fresh. The fried taro was crunchy but it waste hot anymore so I guess I would suggest you air fry it before you eat them. The dumplings were standard. My bf got a big chicken bun but he didn't like the egg inside. My chicken feet was good, normal size - can't complain. Service is your typical standard. You don't come here for the service. I pass by this establishment almost daily on the way home from the gym. I was surprised but not really that the restaurant had changed to a dim sum bakery. It is the first of its kind to open in Elk Grove while before, you'd have to go to elsewhere for really good dim sum. D & D dim sum bakery is to go only and they are the sister of their main restaurant over in the Greenhaven area. I have never been to their other restaurant so my review is based solely on their dim sum bakery. First off, their plaza is connected to Burger King and if you can't find parking, park by Burger King. It's hard to get in and out of the parking lot once it gets busy. Also, come early if you can because the line can get long especially on weekends. They have 2 registers and this makes the line move fairly quickly, that is, if you're not faced with indecisiveness. The menu is pretty standard and offers the usual dishes you'd find at a dim sum restaurant. I got the pork dumplings (pork shiu mai), shrimp dumpling (shrimp har gow) and shrimp shiu mai (it's pork & shrimp mixed). I got 1 order of each and each order has 3 dumpling pieces. Also got the durian pastry. I wanted the shrimp rice noodles but they are only available after 9 am and the honeycomb taro but that is not available yet. My dumplings were huge and very filling!! I am pleasantly surprised that the shrimp dumpling (har gow) had more shrimp less wrap whilst other places have more wrap less shrimp. D&D's version reminds me of how the shrimp dumplings used to be before inflation hit. Big shrimp and lots of flavor. All the dumplings were very tasty and very filling. I didn't like the durian pastry mainly because there wasn't much durian flavor or filling. It was mostly crust and was very flaky. It wasn't that sweet, leaning more towards bland. I know durian is not for the faint of heart but I would have liked more durian flavor. It just didn't pack the punch for me. Now for some things I was disappointed in. I was looking forward to the honeycomb taro and yes it is on the menu but it is nowhere indicated that it is currently not available yet. If it's not available yet, please make it known on the menu that it's unavailable so your customers aren't disappointed. Also adding the fact that noodles are available after 9 is not great for weekends. This is also nowhere noted on the menu or any signs. My sister came in after me and told me porridge was unavailable too. I understand this place just opened and was probably in a hurry (maybe) to open but at least put up a sign or cover up parts of the menu letting customers know what is and can't be ordered right now. They also have a website for which you can order online and pickup in store but it's not available yet. They also have frozen dumplings in ready to go bags for customers to buy in bulk and make at home. This is great for anyone looking to buy for parties or enjoy at home as they please. There are no tables but there are chairs. So far from what I've experienced, this dim sum bakery is alright and great for Elk Grove. I hope they do well. Some of their trays seem to be somewhat empty already. There was a short line to order but it went by fairly quickly! We ordered their shrimp rice roll & plain rice roll. We were notified they didn't have any plain rice rolls ready and would take a few minutes for them to make it fresh. We were so glad we waited because OMG fresh rice roll is the best thing ever! So silky and soft where it literally melts in your mouth! The soy sauce that accompanies the rice rolls was perfect and complemented the rice rolls well! Highly recommend their rice rolls especially if they're fresh!! We also ordered their steamed BBQ pork bun, egg custard bun, baked egg custard pineapple bun, portuguese egg tart, and durian pastry. We loved the portugese egg tarts and would go back just for these! Look at how soft the filling is!! The crust was baked to perfection and literally the perfect balance of crispy but soft. My brother thought the BBQ pork bun had more bread than the pork filling. I had the same opinion about my durian pastry - there was very minimal durian filling compared to the pastry itself but it was still delicious and super crispy! The baked egg custard pineapple bun was soft and delicious! The filling does contain bits of pineapple in it which was interesting and unique! The egg custard bun was good but didn't stand out. Got 12 items for a little under $41 on a very peaceful Saturday morning with super easy parking. This area is much worse in traffic on weekday mornings comparatively. Elk Grove definitely needs this location badly, as the nearest "good" dim sum is way up on Florin Road. I see full service, as they have all of the dim sum favorites: har gow, shiu mai, bao, both baked and steamed, and all of the extras, including eggrolls, etc.... they also have a bakery case with tons of delicious pastries, cakes, and hand pies. It's nice to have another bakery in Elk Grove. Visited bakery around noon on Saturday. Line was not long. There were a few tables inside. The two staff were efficient as taking/packing orders as patrons were ready. We tried the big buns, custard buns, shrimp siu mai, chicken feet, Portuguese tarts, and sesame balls. I saw this Bakery on my way to get donuts. The bakery is right next door to them. There was a lot people inside lined up so we assumed it must be good. We went inside to try some bakery goods. Inside the bakery windows has the name and what ingredients made to make them. I tried an apple pie and my bf friend a beef bun bakery. The service was quick. But I felt rushed as I was deciding what to order. I tried my apple pie at home and it just had no taste or flavor to me it was very bland. My bf agreed his had no flavor either. Now I don't know if this bakery is special in some kind but I don't see what everyone else sees in this place. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing and should of not from the bakery and something else. I didn't know we have a dim sum/bakery store here until I was visiting NYC. My daughter challenged me to find the best pineapple buns in my area. Then I found D&D. It's a wonderful surprise. I love dim sum so of course I have to try this new place. My first try was on a Sunday and the line was zigzagging and out the door so I left. My second try was on a weekday before the lunch rush and the line was more manageable. It was to go only as there were no seating available although I saw tables and chairs stacked against the wall....maybe once the crowds die down??? I had: 1. Shrimp dumplings: huge and my favorite dish. It was actually a mix of pork and shrimp but very tasty. 2. Pork dumplings: similar to the shrimp dumplings but I liked the bits of shrimp so prefer the shrimp dumplings. 3. Shrimp Harcao: the wrapper was too thick for my liking and it was nothing out of the ordinary. 4. Egg tart: okay, custard was not as thick as I am used to and didn't taste any egg/custard flavor. 5. Baked BBQ bun: bread was soft, meat was tasty, although it could've been filled a little bit more. 6.Beef roll: my least favorite. The cilantro overpowered any other flavors and the sauce was very light. I only got this because I order the shrimp roll. After I already paid, they told me they were out and the wait was 10 minutes. So excited to finally have legit dim sum takeout here in Elk Grove!! I'm a huge fan of their first location Dim Dim Food but it was always out of the way for us. This new spot is right near Burger King and much closer for us. They have the same great menu here as well. This location seems to be strictly takeout, it looks like they could have some space for tables but they were stacked to the side. There are chairs in case you're waiting for something that isn't ready yet. We had to wait 10 minutes for more rice rolls and wonton soup but it was ready right on time. Service is very quick here and you'll be out the door in no time. The crispy baked bbq pork buns are my absolute favorite! The shrimp siumai and rice rolls are a must as well. read more

I guess this place used to be in the South Land Park area since the bag said Rush River Dr? Anyways, I hear a lot of chatter about this place and I wanted to try it out. I ordered a lot of different items. Here's my run down from favorite to least favorite: 1. Portuguese egg tart- flakey, real egg custard, delicious 2. BBQ pork bun- they ran out of the crispy top one, but I would think it's 90% the same. Filling was not too sweet with nice chunks of meat. Bread was soft and not dry. 3. Big steamed bun chicken/pork- Good sized meatball in each, egg, lap chung. I slightly liked the chicken more because of the ginger flavor 4. Har Gow- nice plump shrimp, wrapper was a little thick, but these types of stores tend to have thicker wrappers compared to dim sum restaurants usually because it has to hold up longer 5. Shrimp ball- good shrimp flavor, maybe a lot of lard/pork fat? 6. Cilantro dumpling/chive dumpling- tasted the same, same wrapper as the har gow, plump shrimp 7. Chicken/beef pie- filling was a bit dry Service is what you expect from a Chinese place. They were pretty busy on a Sunday afternoon. I suggest writing down what you want, that way it's faster when you get up to the counter. I guess when they settle down, they may offer sit down? Was at the stoplight at the corner of E.Stockton Blvd. And EG Blvd. and after looking over at where D&D was, I knew I was late getting here! (I believe this soot was Darbar Halal restaurant before, which only lasted a year). After parking 3 stores down, I opened the front door, and there was already a line snaking to the counter (counted 31 hungry dim sum patrons). Interior way more spacious than their other location in the Pocket area (Rush River Dr., The Promenade shopping center). No tables, but smart move being that the line was long. Other quick-serve dim sum places don't have tables either, except for Taipan in South Land Park. After being in line for what seemed like an eternity (everyone pretty much left with pink boxes in their hands), I got my usual crispy tip pork buns, baked pork buns, shrimp dumplings, shu mai and egg tarts. (Couldn't take pics of counter display because people were breathing behind my back when I got to the front). Trust me, everything was good. I liked that they're the only place (as far as I know) that lists the ingredients on a 2x3 card in front of majority of their items. Scary for some because the dreaded 3-letter word (MSG) is an ingredient on most items; but hey, it shows they have nothing to hide. I wish this place the best of luck; I know they're gonna put a dent in the full-service/cart pushing dim sum restaurants in town (Well Season, Joy City and Nathans). But good to know Elk Grove has choices and growing! I can't wait til Philz and Mendocino Farms opens...definitely no need to drive to the Greenhaven area anymore for good food! -* *helpful hint...they open daily EXCEPT for Tuesdays, and that applies to both locations. read more

GET YOUR RECEIPTS AND CHECK IT I've had a frustrating experience at this location multiple times. Please make sure to check your receipt and verify your order before leaving. On two separate occasions at this location, I was charged for extra items that I didn't order. The same employee also did this once when she worked at Dim Dim Food on Rush River Dr. before the Elk Grove location opened. I also remember seeing her working at Seasons Asian Market on Laguna Blvd. In addition to the incorrect charges, she is often rude, rushes customers, and throws the receipt and change on the counter instead of handing them to you. Customer service should be respectful and accurate, so I hope management addresses these issues. Maybe not, I think she is the manager/owner. read more
