My brother in law had a birthday so came here for family dinner. Smaller Chinese family style dinner restaurant. I haven't had anything that I didn't like here. All the food tastes good to me. My favorite was the fish filet with black bean sauce. Perfectly cooked small fish filets that are flakey tender. The onions and light black bean sauce compliments the delicate fish. Walnut shrimp is a good rendition, sweet and perfectly cooked large shrimp. The xo sauce pork with green bean and eggplants are new to me but not bad. I enjoyed it, just not my usual type of dish. The salt and pepper spareribs were tender and had a great flavor, not too salty like some other places. Im big on soy sauce chow mein, I like the simplicity of it and it's pretty good here as well. The empress chicken was really good, the ginger onion sauce has good flavor and not just an oily flavor. It complimented the steamed chicken. We also had a beef dish with onions and peppers, really good. I just can't figure out the name but I'd order it for sure next visit. My in-laws ordered these dishes and I'd say they made great choices. Joy city also serves dim sum so I'll try and stop by during those times soon.
The dim sum here is average, it is not the best but isn't bad. The sui mai had lots of meat and were large. The har gow wrappers were relatively thin with a slight chewy texture which met my basic expectations. Service was good as the workers were friendly and cleared dishes promptly. The interior felt over crowded with too many chairs and tables for the amount of space. People who require additional room to move may feel uncomfortable here.
Their lunch specials are a good price for a big portion. Comes with soup, choice of entree, pork fried rice or steamed rice, and an egg roll. The fried rice lacked some flavor, but entrees were fresh and tasty, and the egg roll was better than a lot of other Chinese restaurants' lunch plates. They also serve dim sum that we didn't try. The general chicken and kung pao beef were good, but my favorites were the ginger & scallion beef and sweet & sour chicken. Friendly and very quick service. We came on a Friday around 2pm for a late lunch. There were a few other customers, but we got our soup pretty much right away and our food shortly after that. Nice and clean interior.
It was absolutely delicious and tasted authentic. Every bite was full of flavor, and the food came out quickly. The service was fast, making it a great spot for a quick in-and-out meal without sacrificing quality. We'll definitely be back whenever we're in town!
I stopped by Joy City to share a light dinner tonight. We both wanted a traditional Chinese new Year vegetarian dish called Jai, and asked the server for it. We also wanted an order of rice and was asking for a fish dish, and we ended up with the salted fish fried rice. The Jai wasn't quite what we wanted, because it didn't have the ingredients that comes with the traditional dish, but it didn't have the fried tofu, and the broccoli and baby Bok Choy was very fresh. We did not leave very happy but we didn't need much to fill us up. The server didn't appear to pay the best attention on getting the order right, but getting an order in seem to be the main goal, and trying to explain to another server didn't seem to help. This rest serves very good food though, so I hope the next time, I'll have better luck with my order.
Lunch was excellent! We combined it with Dim Sum and from the regular menu,too! Two of our friends had never been there so it was a treat! Once we ordered, the food came out fast! We ordered Bo Lai tea and my husband wanted them to try Chrysanthemum tea, too! The staff was accommodating and we had both teas for them to try! We ordered Tomato beef chow mein, salt and pepper fish, salt and pepper wings and a few dim sum dishes, too!
Overall food was good and service was attentive and polite. Requests were taken care of right away. We ordered hella food for 4 of us. Spent $150 but kept me full for most of the day, and had lots of leftovers. Shu mai was my favorite, along with the golden shrimp roll and the shrimp and chive dumplings. The fried rice and Chinese broccoli were flavorful and cooked to perfection. I didn't care for the sizzling rice soup (no sizzle), salt & pepper calamari was oily, and the soy sauce chow mein was dry and bland. You will definitely find something you like that will fill your tummy with joy!
I think I've just found my new favorite dim sum restaurant, this place is so good. My favorite dish was their salted pumpkin (you can add shrimp too). This isn't your dim sum place where people are rolling around the dim sum carts, instead they give you a menu and you just write down the quantity of items you want so I'm assuming everything is made to order. I really enjoyed the fried shrimp rolls and chicken feet. I would skip the egg tart next time, very mid. Service was efficient and they refilled out tea and waters as needed. It's a cute and cozy hidden gem.
Joy City is one of my go to spots for chinese takeout and I finally tried their dim sum. Compared to other dim sum places, the menu options are limited but they have the classics and it's reasonably priced and tastes just as good - if not better than some! I got 8 dishes for ~$60. I called in & my order was ready in 30 minutes on Christmas. When I arrived, the small dining room was bustling so I was glad that I opted for takeout. - Siu Mais were very juicy & big (reminded me of ABC Bakery) - Pineapple buns & egg tarts were baked perfectly with crunchy crust and soft filling - Congee was still steaming hot & tasted comforting, not overly salty - Pork fried dumplings had sweet QQ texture skin & savory pork filling, surprisingly good - XO sauce noodles were a little bland, could use more sauce/salt/spice. I do notice that their dishes taste more subtle with lighter seasoning under the new ownership.

One of my favorite Chinese dish is beef pan fried noodle (Hong Kong style). My boyfriend took me here since I have not tried their version. We came on a weeknight so they were not busy. We decided on 3 dishes. Beef pan fried noodle, tofu with mixed vegetables and salt & pepper pork chop. Food came out pretty quickly. The noodle was crispy. I felt the dish needed a tiny bit more flavor. Pork chop was cooked perfectly. Tofu with veggies was a healthy option. Service was good overall but did lack towards the end of our meal.
I haven't found more than one place in Elk Grove that I actually enjoy and tend to stick to Sac for Chinese food. I've been to Joy City a couple of times. All the dishes were oily and greasy, which is to be expected, but it seemed to be even more so than what I'm used to. Portions are good. All in all it's not bad, but also nothing noteworthy.

Another mother and daughter day out to enjoy dim sum. It's our way to reconnect over a cup of fragrance Jasmine tea and our favorite dim sum to rejuvenate our energies. The place was packed but not noisy. We got shrimp dumplings, shrimp rice rolls, fried shrimp balls, baked pineapple buns, oyster sauce Chinese broccoli, and beancurd skin rolls. Pineapple buns were decently authentic and the beancurd skin rolls and Chinese broccoli were solidly delicious. All the shrimp dishes were good except for the shrimp rice rolls. Shrimp rice roll is my daughter's favorite so we always ordered it. However, the shrimps in this dish tasted off, didn't taste fresh. But the shrimps in the other shrimp dishes tasted fine. We usually don't order any fried dim sum but we felt like being "bad" so we ordered the fried shrimp ball, which turned out to be the star of the day. ("Everything tastes better fried"!!) The shrimp balls looked absolutely beautiful and the outer skins were crunchy. The balls came out piping hot and the shrimps tasted wonderful. That's exactly what we needed that day. It's nice to indulging ourselves with our favorite foods, sipping some tea to chill out after a long week and leaving the restaurant feeling full and completely happy. And the staff worked like a well-oiled machine: polite, pleasant and efficient! It's fun to watch them glided through the bustling restaurant fluidly. read more
The restaurant has been here for many years, but I only recently discovered the place. The parking can get crowded as it is shared with several businesses. We did the family dinner- B. It came with 9 dishes and we added an additional dish. The food was good overall, but I felt that quite a few of the dishes were salty. The price was reasonable enough. The star of the show here is definitely the dim sum. It's fresh, flavorful, and hits all the right traditional notes. On the lunch and wok side of the menu, things are equally solid. We ordered the Beef Chow Fun along with four dim sum dishes, and the Beef Chow Fun was at just $13.95, it is an absolute steal. Both the portion size and the overall quality were acceptable--it had that nice, authentic wok hei (breath of the wok) flavor without being overly greasy. If you're looking for a meal that is genuinely cost-effective without sacrificing taste, this is the place. One of the biggest selling points for Joy City is how incredibly stress-free it is to visit. The location is highly convenient, next to a high way exit and unlike so many popular dim sum spots where you have to circle the block looking for a spot, they offer ample free parking. It makes dropping in for a quick lunch or a family dinner entirely hassle-free. If there is one area where you need to set your expectations, it's the service. It can be a bit hit-and-miss. On some visits, the staff is quick and attentive; on others, you might have to flag someone down for water or your check. Where Nostalgia Meets Good Taste Old-School Charm, Steaming Hot Porridge, and Surprisingly Classy Vibes-A Dim Sum Win First time here and pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is calm, intimate, and not as hectic as most dim sum spots. The old-school interior gave me a wave of nostalgia, and the soft classical instrumental music added just the right touch to the ambiance-simple, elegant, and comforting. This is Cantonese-style dim sum, and honestly, one of the better ones I've tried for the price. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the food easily stood out on its own. They do charge for hot tea, so definitely drink it and get your money's worth. The Preserved Egg with Pork Porridge was the star for me-fresh, piping hot, and seasoned perfectly. Even after two bowls, it stayed warm. The server scoops your first bowl for you, which I appreciated, but fair warning: it's very hot. Simple, balanced, and comforting--the kind of dish that makes you slow down and enjoy the moment. The Golden Shrimp Rice Roll is another must-order-crispy in all the right places with great texture and a flavorful dipping sauce that ties it together. My friend ordered the Chicken Feet, and while I'm not a fan, the fact she finished the whole plate says enough. The Shrimp Dumplings were fine-fresh but a bit too glutinous for my liking-and the Siu Mai leaned a little salty compared to others. The Fried Lobster Roll was another standout: crisp, flavorful, and nicely paired with the sweet and sour sauce. The Egg Tart was the perfect ending-light, buttery, and baked fresh to order. Overall, this place feels family-oriented but still nice enough for a casual date, especially if you appreciate fast, attentive service and a calm, classic vibe. read more
We took a chance at dim sum on Sunday at noon. Place was packed but my sister managed to grab a table by the door. Finding a parking spot can be challenging during breakfast/lunch time in the small plaza. Today, we ordered our favorites and then some. Chicken feet, shrimp noodle, har gow, siu mai, beef tripe, spareribs, fried shrimp ball, and beef chow fun. Today, also tried salt and pepper fish fillet. All of it was very good. Service was great. Well-staffed. Food came fast, even the a la carte orders. Steady take out business. Today, they were giving out cute 2026 calendars too! Will be back soon. read more

My family and I don't come here often, but when we do, the food always reminds me that the food is good here. Good portions and the price is good too. The place is small, but still has enough big and small tables. You can order dim sum during dinner time if it's available. Employees are friendly. read more
Ambience felt nice. I liked the decor., the service was OK. It definitely could've been better but overall it wasn't bad. If you order soup, they even serve it for you which I think is a very old tradition that doesn't happen anymore so kudos for that. Now, as far as the food, I had the beef and broccoli the beef seemed very chewy, but the flavor was definitely there with ginger and garlic, fried rice was decent. I feel like it lacked flavor and had no color. There's definitely room to improve as well, honey walnut shrimp was definitely a hit and so was the dim sum I ordered, which was siu mai and the shrimp dumpling. read more

I accidentally came across this restaurant. I saw the same servers from Nathan's. I believe it's owned by the same owners. They have the same dim sum items and menu. Super friendly staff, was seated pretty quickly. It's further out in Elk Grove, close to I-5. Food was as good as Nathan's. The dinning area is much smaller, would recommend this place. It's pretty small, so plan accordingly for big parties. Also, if you're not familiar with Nathan's, their dim sum menu is small so you may not get everything you want at a bigger dim sum restaurant. read more

Solid dim sum option in Elk Grove! The shrimp rice roll, siu mai, and chicken feet were our favorites. Got here around 11 on a Sunday and the entire restaurant was full. Not sure why they have so many one star reviews, but for dim sum and location this is a good option. I'd say this is less greasy than Ming Dynasty and better than Happy Garden. Asia Pearl is slightly better and has more options but for convenience and reasonable prices I'd definitely return. read more

Picked up a bunch of dishes To Go for a small get together. I usually go all the way to Freeport for my Chinese food, but since this restaurant was on the way to my destination I figured I would give it a shot. Everything was pretty good. I don't think I had anything to complain about. The portions were just right and didn't suffer from shrink-flation. I would have to go here for dim sum to really get an idea of how well this place is but from just ordering some takeout it was decent and nothing tasted bad. read more
It was our first time going to this restaurant and it was worth going to. First thing for me is always the location and parking. It's located in Elk Grove in a shopping plaza. The parking area is not that big considering there are other restaurants next to it. The restaurant is clean, which is always a plus for me. The service was also good even though there were a few miscommunication. The food was very good. I love their Fried Rice and their General Chicken. We will definitely go back here in the near future. read more

Golden pumpkin prawns are made with shrimp, pumpkins, and salted egg yolks. This dish is the same as the one in Taste of Original. We tried this one last week. read more
