This event will be remembered in our mind, heart, and especially by our stomach. I was very fortunate in receiving notice of the last seating at Joss in the form of private, reserved banquets in September 2026. Joss had previously closed to the public at the end of August. 8 courses were most ample, and generosity was evident in the use of luxurious ingredients and elaborate culinary techniques. 1) Wu Gok: Fried Taro dumpling (Chinese: 芋角) covered in an airy, lacy, crispy batter. The mashed starchy, naturally sweet Taro root hides a soft oyster. Lightly smashed, crunchy, salted cucumber, dark cloud ear mushrooms are dressed in subtle, sweetened rice vinegar dressing similar to Japanese Su no Mono salad. Accompanied by whole red Thai chile and a slice of garlic clove. 2) Roast Squab: Small pigeon like bird slow baked to golden brown to retain succulence with pleasant scent of 5 spice where star anise added licorice aromatics. Possibly crushed red table pepper & touch of powdered Sichuan pepper in the salt blend provided along with a wedge of lemon for adding gastrique. Small nubs of dark, brown, squab meat were lightly sautéed with finely chopped bright green asparagus in butter lettuce leaf cups. Crunchy, thick rice chips for textural contrast. 3) Winter Melon 8 Precious Broth: Served in its own whole melon tureen after being cleared of its "meat". Shrimp, pillowy bay scallops, chunks of soft, juicy Winter Melon, diced earthy Shītakè mushroom, ham were some of the ingredients in soy sauce darkened chicken broth. 4) Maine Lobster Aberdeen over Braised Noodle with Lobster Jus Naturel: Whole scarlet lobster shell is placed over al dente thin pasta looking like squiggly Linguine. And barely steamed chunks of lobster that may have been coated in egg white & corn starch, then flash sautéed to seal in moistness for a plush velvety surface and fibrous, meaty, sweet interior. All the above are tossed in a concentrated lobster shell based broth along with medicinal ginger, chiffonade of scallions, toasty, aromatic sesame oil. Some will say this is a highly sophisticated, "royal" version of Lobster Cantonese. 5) Crisped California Red Snapper with Lychi Sweet & Sour Sauce: Whole fish lightly battered with possibly corn starch-wheat flour for extra crispness of the skin. The frying of the fish in light, clean oil gives the fish meat an ethereal, airy texture. Then a fruity, lychee, oyster sauce based, vinegar acidic sauce is applied garnished with sautéed green, yellow, red bellpeppers. 6) Joss Peking Duck: May be the signature Chinese duck dish in all of California if not the U.S. The special involved method leaves the skin, especially the legs, with a lacquered, shiny, lustrous glow. The crispy skin exudes a sweet, lush fattiness that is tamed by the extra earthy, sweet, heavy, viscosity of the fermented soy bean Hoisin/"plum sauce". The duck meat is lean, toned, moist for different effect. All the above can be placed in a taut, stretchy, ultra thin, leathery wheat crêpe slathered with Hoisin dressed with julienned watery cucumber and chiffonade of scallions. 1-6a) Chrysanthemum Tea paired well with the Chinese Banquet cuisine. The earthy, spicy, floral tones were ideal. Dessert: 7) Steamed Chocolate Pudding Cake is chocolatey, ultra plush, touch sweet, moist in a pool of dark chocolate sauce. 8) Fresh Coconut Frappé: Young, tender coconut meat, coconut water, possibly condensed milk seems blended and chilled to make a refreshing, frothy, aerosol-like whip cream texture. Garnished with mint leaves. What an incredible repast "by Executive chef Golo Kwokson Yu who joined the kitchen in 1988, training under master chef Lao Ying Chieh before taking over as Chef de Cuisine in 1993." THE BAD Aside from the two dishes mentioned above, we found the other entrees to be unremarkable. Service was also unremarkable. One overworked waiter was handling the entire dining room, so service was not swift. Took 10 minutes 'til the brown rice equivalent I ordered finally appeared--and I had to remind him to bring it. Unfortunately, this was one of the most frustrating dining experiences I've had in a long time. We booked the 8:00 PM seating, one of only two seatings that evening (6:00 PM and 8:00 PM). We arrived around 7:30 PM and were told they weren't ready because the entire 6:00 PM group was still there. Fair enough. We were asked to come back later. When we returned at 8:00 PM, guests were standing outside because the restaurant had locked the door. Despite having an 8:00 PM reservation, we weren't allowed in or seated until around 8:20 PM and didn't receive food until after 9:00 PM, all while many of the 6:00 PM guests were still dining. The seating situation was complete chaos. Guests were shuffled around the restaurant as tables slowly opened up. Some of the 8:00 PM guests were crammed together while the 6:00 PM was still finishing up, and people were continually being relocated. There were even guests from lunch services still occupying tables and screaming to the chef. Adding to the confusion, people were constantly walking behind the sushi bar to take photos while raw seafood was being prepared. Personally, I found that uncomfortable and unsanitary. Instead of acknowledging the delays or apologizing, Chef Hilo repeatedly explained that he was running behind because he was entertaining celebrities, important people, and high-profile guests. He mentioned several times how popular he was, but never once apologized to the guests who were waiting. The commentary throughout dinner was uncomfortable and inappropriate. Conversations drifted into topics involving sex, race, his dating life, his divorces, and other personal details that felt completely unnecessary. At one point, he openly told a woman that he would "bend her over" if her husband wasn't sitting next to her. He could see the very irritated look on my face and said, "You look like you want to eat my hand." I responded that I would like to eat at some point, considering we'd been waiting over an hour beyond our reservation time. Rather than recognizing the frustration, he asked what my problem was and loudly told me that I didn't have to be there if I wasn't enjoying myself. Had there not been a reservation deposit involved, I would have left. The frustrating part is that most of the food was actually pretty good. The fish quality was excellent and several bites were memorable. The standout person of the evening was Chef Siverio. While Chef Hilo spent much of the night talking, Chef Siverio appeared to be doing most of the actual work. He was professional, attentive, and genuinely seemed to care about the guest experience. He was easily the highlight of the evening. I rarely reduce gratuity because I understand how difficult restaurant work can be. In this case, I lowered the tip and handed Chef Siverio cash directly because I wanted him to know his efforts were appreciated. What became obvious throughout the evening was that Chef Hilo knew we were unhappy. At one point, he told another couple that he knew how to "read a room and adjust accordingly," as he is trying to give us all of our food to rush us out. Yet there was never an apology for the delays, the disorganization, or the atmosphere. The food was excellent. The hospitality was not. I left remembering this guy's ego more than the fish, and that's never a good sign. The friends who recommended Hilo to me had a completely different experience because they were the only guests there that night. Unfortunately, that wasn't the experience we received. If you're looking for great fish, you'll probably find it here. If you're looking for a great omakase experience, I would strongly recommend managing your expectations and taking your money elsewhere.

This was the best Thai food I have ever had! I used to love Tommy Tang on Melrose and Chan Dara on Larchmont. Sadly both of these restaurants are gone now and most Thai restaurants I've been to leave me disappointed. But not Si Laa. We had 4 dishes for the 3 of us. The dishes we ate included the Hidden Treasures, Crispy Duck, Prime Filet Mignon and Pad Thai Shrimp. All these dishes were perfectly prepared and so tasty! I highly recommend Si Laa Thai and I am planning to return very soon.
