I'm so glad I took my bike to this shop for service. It was a great experience. I have a vintage English 3-speed, which seems like a much simpler bike than the modern versions, unless you need a part & then enjoy your wild goose chase. I hadn't ridden the bike for several years, because it needed some attention & I have not had the best experience with getting service for this bike. But this month my desire to ride was greater than my aversion to inattentive, poor service & I did some searching and found this shop in my backyard. Wow, did I have a different & very positive experience. At their request, I took the bike in before my appointment to assess what was needed. I felt they were generous with their time in assessing the bike. I raised a concern & they really addressed it & devised 3 possible plans of action, based upon what happened when they started the work. The work came in under budget & I spent the difference (plus some) buying a lock that should make my beloved bicycle much less attractive to thieves. The gentlemen were good to my bike, good to me, seemed to enjoy each other's company & the work they do. This is a mighty fine shop & it's where I'll be doing business. read more

Took my bike here for a basic tune up as there aren't too many bike shops that actually focus on good quality road bikes; they seem to all be casual bikes or eBikes these days like the place on Park Street. Booking an appointment was very simple and I took my bike in the day before very quickly. Bike was ready the next day by around 1 PM and after riding today, they really did a good job and cleaned it up nicely. Given a tune up is a relatively standard rate at bike shops these days, it always seemed hard to pick the place, but with the service I got here, they've now got a regular customer in me. read more

This place is great. I bought my bike here in 2012 after going to a lot of different places to check out the bicycles. Ultimately my decision was based on the bicycle itself, but there were some places that I really didn't want to buy a bike at, whereas this place I really did. The staff is good, the bikes are good, and they have the accessories you need, all without being too much. Like, I got a reasonably priced bicycle, and they don't try to oversell you or anything. Also, if they are busy when you walk in, they acknowledge you, so you don't have to wonder. Recently, my bike broke and I took it there to be fixed. It ended up being just something bent out of place, so they bent it back and also adjusted my seat for me, no charge. Now that's great service. So glad I bought my bike here. Staff was super helpful. We came in with ridiculously expired helmets (didn't even know the dates were in the helmet) and there was no shame or judgment! One employee (Darryl, maybe?) helped my daughter and I with some intro questions and myself looking for a better helmet since I now have an e-bike. We did some more looking. Then soon after, another employee (didn't catch name, but very slight accent, very friendly) helped my daughter size a helmet. After we purchased one he graciously helped her size it again! I used to come here to get my bike tires fixed when I had a flat (is it obvious enough I'm a novice) and they were always friendly and efficient. Stellar service! Popped in to book a service and as with all the bike shops in the area there was about a 3 week waiting list. Pandemic Problems! But the guy at the counter took a look at my bike and did a very quick brake line lube and even was kind enough to give me tube caps and some nuts so I can inflate my tires easier. Just these two things alone enabled me to enjoy riding my bike so much more whilst I waited for the actual service. Now after the service - dam - my bike shifts like a dream. Having gotten used to clunky sticky gear shifts, it still surprises me when it just transitions up and down the gears. When picking up the bike, they all jump in making sure you get served quickly and then did a quick check on the bike before handing it off. Will always bring my bike here, even if the 'other' shop is closer. Great job everyone! read more

I purchased an expensive Trek road bike last year with the assistance of David after riding an Eddy Merckx for about 25 years. (Today's mid-range Trek's are so much better than a 25 year old Merckx that at the time was among the best.) The entire buying experience was excellent as has been the service since then. I should have wrote this review after I bought the bike but better late than never. What prompted me to write this today was the service they performed on my bike today. I went in only to get a new rear tire. When changing the tire, "eagle eyes" Josh noticed that the rim was defective. He immediately changed it out as it was covered by Trek's warranty. Even though they did not have a spare rim in the correct size, they took one from a bike in inventory as they know I ride daily and would be grumpy if I missed a morning ride. I am not sure many shops would have done that and I am very appreciative. They also made some adjustments and cleaned up my bike so that it looked new when I picked it up. It's a pleasure doing business with Cycle City as Harry, David, Josh and David always treat me like a king and they are appreciative of my business. Thanks guys! read more

When I first bought my road bike in 2008 I didn't really know what to expect about the world of road cycling. In fact, I calling myself a total noob is probably the most appropriate. Every time that I had a problem, a question, or needed guidance, Harry or his team were able to help me, not only with a smile and courteous service, but also by going above and beyond what is expected of average service. I've not had many services completed here, from swapping grip tape or chains, to upgrading tires or components. Amazing shop. These guys are true professionals and treat every customer with patience and class. I've come here for multiple tuneups and some minor work on my bike and they always take the time to give me their recommendations and explain what needs to be done. They guarantee their work and happily make adjustments if you come back in and aren't quite satisfied with how your bike is working. Personally, I love that they don't act superior and condescending if you're not a bike expert, like some hipster bike shops. Their service prices are a bit higher than some other shops, but the friendliness and superb customer service completely make it worth it. I'm from LA, and whenever I travel I take one of my bikes and explore the neighborhood I am in. I was riding along and saw Cycle City so I thought I'd stop in and get some local info... I spoke with a very helpful guy named David who told me about an awesome taco truck (Tacos mi Rancho) and how do I avoid the part of the Embarcadero that was under construction. All in all, great information for me since I've never been in Alameda before... The store was clean, and well stocked. I wish they would've sold T-shirts or stickers because I would've bought something to commemorate my visit... But when I come back to Alameda I'll be sure to stop in. You should too! read more

I really needed my tire fixed tonight, and they were nice enough to stay open a little late so I could get there. Which was especially great because my tire is hard to fit. A special thanks to Josh, who apparently has a magic technique for fixing tight fitting tires, and who got me back on the road so I can get to work tomorrow. I'd love to talk about Cycle City's service. Really, I would... but I can't. My bike is my primary mode of transportation. It's how I get to work, to the grocery store, home, just about anywhere except across the bay bridge (and then, it's on the AC Transit bike rack). Now, maybe it's my problem for only having one bike, that I bought a used bike with a few issues. But if I'm going to have work done, I need it done that day-- drop off in the morning, pick up in the evening. I'll happily make an appointment for that day. Cycle City wasn't having any of that. They wanted me to leave my bike there three days before they could start work, and estimated two days to do the job. I also wasn't too pleased when the estimate to swap out a busted shifter was $70-- twenty for the labor and fifty for the part, when the part itself was sitting on the counter in front of me with a $15 price tag. On the upside, the gentlemen at the counter was upfront about their policy. In the end, I took my bike to a different place in Alameda, and for $90, got the shifter replaced, derailer adjusted, chain replaced, and more, with labor, all in one day. I almost feel like it's a new bike. read more

While riding my bike yesterday my crank got really lose and was about ready to fall off. I usually go to Alameda Bicycle, but this one was closer when my bike broke, so i opted to play it safe and see if they could help me. When i walked in the place seemed really dead-- zero customers and none of the workers really said hi, lol. I noticed all of the workers were busy fixing bikes, so i figured i might not be able to get my bike fixed right away. However, the guy at the counter was very friendly and quickly came around to fix my bike. He kept me informed on what he was doing and what needed to be fixed. I was there for less than 10 minutes and the charge only came up to $1.67, the price of the new bolt-- no charge for labor. While i was there i noticed they had a wide selection of road bikes and bike gear. The inside seems a little outdated, but who cares... it's just a bike shop, lol. All in all i can't complain, i got my bike fixed in under 10 minutes for less than $2. read more

Love 'em! Great staff. Harry and the gang are most helpful. My favorite experience with them was just before embarking on AIDS Lifecycle a couple of years ago. It was my 3rd time and my cousin's first. I took my bike in for a tune up earlier that week and was picking it up. Fabulous job as always. My cousin brought his up from L.A. and I asked Harry to take a quick look at it. They discovered a couple of items that could have made my cousin's week miserable (loose head set, loose hubs). Started buying random things here i.e. :headlight, tubes tires etc for my high dollar full suspension specialized...right upfront, dudes were stand up gents... Today I took home a sweet Trek roadbike...I myself 100% of the time know what I'm looking for, yet I gotta be honest I learned so much from the informative down to earth guys there...talk about being extremely thorough from the walk around on the bikes to the explanation of every detail about the test ride I went on using multiple bikes, etc...they praised the fact that I go out and ride them 15-20min!!!! Not ONLY did I pay below blue book, and cheaper than online prices for a NEW badass trek, I got the full service treatment leaving me overly confident in my purchase... Initially I thought, great, west end alameda bike shop, high dollar bikes with sales guys that will shine you on if your not in their bike club... Wrong! I don't look like your average road bike rider from the west end...these guys ROCK.. In my search for my first road bike in 2003, I went to a few places including Cycle City. As a participant in AIDS LifeCycle, they offered discounts. Two of the brands they specialize in are Trek and Lemond, while Alameda Bicycle goes for Redline and Specialized. Ultimately, because of my exceptional experience with Alameda as well as my affinity for the Specialized Allez series, I went with Alameda, but my experience here was very good. I've purchased several little things here and the staff has always been helpful. Before I really found Alameda Bike, I found this place and had gotten my Cannondale mountain bike repaired here. Spot on job, great explanations of what was wrong and how and why it was being fixed. Were it not for Alameda and my already solid bond with them, I'd consider Cycle City in a heartbeat. read more

Modest, friendly service here The employees aren't shy in asking you if you need help but aren't overbearing, either. All answers you receive are well thought out & helpful. - Not the largest store (though it may be the biggest one on the island) but still plenty to see. Also an authorized Trek dealer. Prices---pretty high---but not insanely so. Many items are within reason. I recommend this shop to any other new bikes store in Alameda! (Why do ya think they get 4.5 total?!) read more
