Dave and his crew are amazing. I brought my newly painted, steel vintage Atala frame and a box of parts. We talked colors and how I like to ride (commuting, cruising the city) to determine which parts we'd keep and which they'd replace. The bottom bracket cup was lodged in pretty tight. Several bike shops were unable to remove it, but Dave and one of his bike specialists had the tools and the knowledge to remove the Italian parts. They even realigned the back triangle without messing up the fresh paint job. Dave built the wheels with white rims and purple hubs. They replaced the bent bottom bracket and gave me a Rivendell inspired chain guard. Quality work on an 50 year old bike frame. I came in for a custom bike consultation and david took the time to listen to my wishlist of features in a new bike. There weren't any frames that fit me in the shop, so he opened up facebook marketplace and we scrolled on there together until we found a frame that made sense + a color I liked. The Towne Cycles has to be Oakland's best bike shop, because it's hard to imagine a better one, Two family members and I have had nothing but good experiences with repairs there. A few moments taking in how ably the staff wield a wrench and a screwdriver are enough to show that they are highly experienced and devoted to their work. For repairs, the policy is to make a reservation in advance rather than just dropping in. When my bike broken down half an hour before closing time, we phoned and they were kind enough to let us come in. They fixed the bike and adjusted the front and rear derailleur settings so that the problem wouldn't recur. Prices are very fair. The atmosphere is real and pleasant. Took in two odd long cargo bikes to get some work done, including a very unorthodox removal of an ebike system and replacing brake pads on another long bike. These folks are the opposite of bike snob mechanics that you run into all too often at fancy shops. They handled both like pros: thoroughly checking the bike for issues like loose headsets, etc. Turn around was quick and they did a great job on both bikes. I'm rare to write a review on here, but I have been meaning to get around to highly recommending this bike shop. This place has been my favorite bicycle repair resource after years/decades of unfavorable experiences at all sorts of bike shops and repair spaces. A "tune up" is an understatement here; I have a vintage road bike that I already enjoy riding but after Dave tuned it up it was a dream to take it out for a spin. It's noticeable when dropping off a bike here that Dave is passionate and bikes, this combined with a brilliant ability to determine what is off with a bike and the skillsets to make it high functioning is what keeps me coming back and keeps me recommending this place to my friends. I have observed Dave to have a commitment towards the overall high-functioning of my bike, and it is obvious that he has imparted this focus to his qualified assistants. This open-air(during business hours)bike shop is found tucked in a residential neighborhood right off a few major streets and it's noticeable that Dave seems to have positive natural relations with his neighbors from the greetings and casual convos had as they pass by. It is a most welcomed break from the pretentious and un-invested bike stores that have 2 month tune-up waitlists in whatever part of the Bay that has been most newly gentrified. I have had success in getting my bike scheduled and serviced expediently during my experiences, but I would happily wait if there was one. My family had three basic bikes needing different levels of tuneup and repair. David did a good job diagnosing the problems and consulting on what was needed. He adjusted the scope of work for each bike to what it needed and made each job appropriately affordable. The turnaround was quick and all the bikes run smoothly. He's really focused on customer satisfaction and takes the time to make sure you get what you want. His system for scheduling a time to dropoff was a little unusual for a bike shop, but it worked out well, because with your selected time slot you don't have to wait to have your bike looked at, and it keeps things Covid safe. I have been getting my bike serviced at Towne cycles for a few years. Small things like brake adjustments and full tune ups with lots of parts changes. I feel so welcomed in this shop, and my bike always comes back better than before. For example, the last tune I got, the staff also adjusted my after-market kickstand and bike rack, both of which were a bit loose (I really was going to eventually get to fixing them!). When I came to pick my bike up (earlier than expected!) David, the owner, was readjusting the brakes because he gave it a test ride and they were squeaking just a little bit. I've biked by this shop 100s of times. I bike commute from Berkeley to Oakland every day. I don't maintain my bike I ride it until it's falling apart then I rebuild it. Or rather I pay someone to rebuild it. Tired of snarky biker attitude and high prices at other shops (wait two weeks for a tune up?? And pay $250?) I decided to give these guys a run when my front brakes finally went. I'm blown away by the results of their full tune up. my bike hasn't ridden this well in 10 years! Maybe more. And they took a heat gun to the frame and cleaned up all the tar and crap stuck to it from years of the filthy ride. And they were super cheap. And he swapped my tires so they'd wear evenly. And he cleaned my grips (with Wd40!). And I got a new cassette. I mean I gave him a tip it was so cheap. Serious five stars all the way. read more

With needy joints, I need the ergonomics on my bike to be extra dialed in to avoid injury. This is my fourth time taking my bike to Dave and Jax over the course of a few years and they finally let me pay for something. The first three times were just minor things: (1) Swapping out a bike seat (they charged me for the seat but not the labor), (2) I asked if I needed a new chain and they said, "No, come back in a year," (3) my brakes were dragging on the rim and Jax fixed it in a minute and sent me on my way. So this fourth time, I came back and got a full tuneup. Worth every penny! The bike rides better than it ever has before! Also I think based on watching me ride the bike and listening to me describe what was and was not comfortable, they made tiny adjustments to the seat angle and handlebars which make it fit me so much better! To be clear, they work out of a tiny garage so don't go there expecting to find a ton of readymade bikes in different colors. They specialize in building (and maintaining and modifying) custom bikes, working within your price range, building the right bike for your lifestyle and preferences, and tuning it up so it rides like a dream. Finally, not only are they absolute bicycle experts, they are just wonderful neighborhood folks. Based on stories from the neighbors (Dave and Jax aren't going around bragging about themselves so I heard this secondhand), they have really helped some folks out and I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to call them local heroes. read more
