These guys are so awesome. They really know their stuff. I've heard that they know how to build wheels from scratch, which is a lost art. I went in there for a very obscure part and they managed to find it with like three minutes until closing time. It was this washer that is part of my front fork assembly, one of those washers that keeps the wheel from falling out even if the skewer comes undone. Anyway, they had it, they gave it to me for free, and it just made me realize that places like this are amazing and rare and we should definitely support them. So I do! And so should you. The bike came in at the last minute and Jason built it himself the same day to ensure that I would get the present on the actual day. I was thrilled and surprised. He helped me understand the bike and load it up to go. PROS: + Fantastic owner and crew. I don't know Jason well, but he strikes me as a friendly, no-nonsense, dry sense of humor type. We were looking for a bike for my nephew. The manufacturers website said that Laurel Cyclery should have it in stock. I reached out to the store through text, and Jason responded immediately saying they indeed had the bike in stock and that it could be installed and ready the same day. We ended up coming the next day to pick up the bike. Very easy and smooth transaction. A few days later, we noticed a slice in the tire. Jason had us come back and said they'd fix it. They initially were going to just change the tube, but ended up replacing the tube and tire since he knew we were coming from across the bay. Jason also reached out another few days later to make sure everything was going well with the bike. Not a lot of bike shops do that so we're appreciative of the care and attention we received. I really love their helmet collection...so much so I bought one this past weekend while getting my bike fixed despite not needing a new helmet (although now that I have it I realize my old one was quite old and not nearly as comfortable as the one I bought). Our bikes were stolen, so my wife and I went all over the Bay Area looking for a shop that would help us decide on a new bicycle and the fine folk at Laurel Cyclery were really quite helpful. We know that bike stock is severely supply constrained right now but a lot of other shops really didn't spend much time with us. They discussed my wife's wants, needs and fit and brought out a few bikes for my wife to try and ride around in. Arrived in the morning and a very nice guy took my flat to fix. A few hours later, he texted me that it was ready for pickup. So I took an Uber and arrived at 2:47pm. There's a sign on the door (out to lunch - back at 3pm). I texted him "wish you had told me about the lunch hours when you texed me to come pick up my wheel". No response. It's now 3:15pm and there's three other customers waiting when he finally arrives. He just smiles and says "hopefully you weren't waiting long". Like I said, he was a nice guy and the wheel was repaired, but the communication about store hours needs tons of improvement. You can include them on your posted store hours, you can include them in Yelp profile (as many vendors do) and you can definitely mention them when you text a customer that their bike is ready!!! UPDATE: the owner responded and assured me that this was a one-off and now I feel bad for posting a low star review LOL. I took an Uber during MY lunch break to pick up my wheel and then had to wait - I think I overreacted. It's a really nice shop and the service was great otherwise!! read more

I purchased a bike from Laurel Cyclery in May of 2020. Bikes have been in high demand recently, so Jason tracked down one of the last available models in the country and had it shipped. COVID slowed down the shipping, so Jason gave me regular updates on the status. When the bike came in, they moved it to the front of the line and built it up that day. After a week of heavy use, the rear derailleur needed adjustment so I stopped by on a Saturday morning. Jason stopped what he was doing and immediately adjusted everything. In and out in 5 minutes. I could have saved $75 buying online, but I would not have gotten the same level of service and care. This is why you buy from a local bike shop. read more

I've brought my bike here several times for maintenance and repairs over the years, and I really appreciate the quote process, service, pricing, and results. My sense as they really are trying to give clear honest evaluations and do solid work. And help people ride. And they stand by what they do. Also the shop is a good place with good people working in it and it's good for our neighborhood. I ride an '80s raleigh, and it needs a lot of care and attention. If something small is off, I bring it in and they'll take a look at it and let me know what's going on. They give me tips for my own maintenance and care, and they do a good job fixing and maintaining it when I bring it in for bigger stuff. read more

I just had my Jamis commuter bike tuned. Moria and Jason were as usual friendly and knew what I wanted. So truing the wheels, a new cassette, brake pads, and Jason replaced the Jamis handgrips which I've never liked with some excellent ergonomic handgrips. It wasn't cheap but I think they charge a fair price. So I took it out for a long ride. Perfect, everything works the way it is supposed to. At another shop two years ago, the same and more expensive and it was OK but not good. With Laurel Cyclery it was excellent. My five year old bike feels like new. In the past I've bought a used bike for my daughter from Jason. I've bought bits and pieces for my bike, tubes, tires and such. It's good to have a neighborhood bike shop and the Laurel Cyclery is excellent. read more

I purchased a gravel bike from them in 2017 (?) and have been going back ever since. Jason and his team really work to make me a happy customer. Sometimes they fix things I thought were difficult to fix really fast (like, I forgot to tighten the front axle - duh.) I get lots of useful bike repair and maintenance tips from them. During the pandemic it's understandable their service takes longer, but it's worth it. I feel ripped off every time I come here. Definitely a shop looking for a financial profit. I brought my bike wheel in for help with putting the tube and tire on and the guy charged me for 3 minutes of finishing off the tire installation. I've been cycling since I was 5 and I know how wheels work and how they'll last and this guy tried to convince me to spend $100+ claiming my wheel was a safety hazard. I CYCLED FOR 12 hours the next day ! Haha no hazard! Just a money grubbing bike shop trying to rip me off again. If you can go to mike's bikes! Or even any nonprofit bike shop. I only go here if I'm desperate and forget about being overcharged. I was even laughed at for not putting the tire on correctly and instead of receiving help with fixing it I was charged almost $14 for talking to the guy about my wheel. All he did was tuck 3 inches of tire into my wheel. He didn't even fix the placement of my tire. Overall, if you can afford to waste money go here. I could of had the same help FOR FREE elsewhere. read more

Laurel Cyclery is a decent local bike shop. I always stop by there for tubes, and I recently went there to fix a broken part on my bike. The price was fine, not as cheap as online (they won't price match), but better than other shops. And it was done fast, within 2 days fast to order the new parts and install them. My main disappointment is a lack of feedback or recommendations. I go to bike shops to get expert opinions, but when I asked for recommendations on adjusting fit, the owner wouldn't even help. You need to pay for a separate service for that. I understand it's a small business, but I've been to other places (like Mike's in Berkeley or Chain Reaction in Redwood City) that will at least have you hop up on the bike and spend 5 minutes helping you. I love how close this shop is, and they are great for the community, but I guess I had hoped for a bit more customer service. read more

I brought my Giant roadbike here for the first time for a basic tune after being in storage for a year. That was about 3 months ago and I'm very satisfied with their work! I had expensive tube-liners put on too and am just needing to air my tires for the first time since the tune up! Prices are reasonable compared to other local shops I've gone to for repairs too. They have a little of everything you could need in a pinch - wrap, pumps, tubes, etc. Also very convenient location for biking and not bad parking. read more

Seriously, this is a fantastic little shop and its been very well received by the neighborhood; they were an instant success! We've needed a local cyclery and we couldn't have asked for a better one than The Laurel Cyclery. I stopped in just a few days after they opened their doors for the first time and I got to be their very first tune-up. My bike is a Cannondale Prophet (a lefty mountain bike) and it has some complicated maintenance requirements, but it was no problem for Jason and Brook, they knocked it out like real pros! My bike had been unridden for about 2 years after a particularly heinous wreck while racing down Mission Peak in a hail storm (Sooo worth the injury! It was a truly exhilarating ride in an ugly storm and I was the only one on the mountain, so I got to really fly! ... then I hit a tire pinching rut and ... well ... I really flew. Thank god those boulders were there to break my fall!). They had my bike fixed up and back on the rode in no time. They have a great selection of cruising and commuter bikes, which are ideal for Oakland riders. They have (or will be willing to get) pretty much any accessory or parts you may need as well. This is definitely a shop to watch because they do group rides (I got to attend their inaugural ride and we had great fun!) of varying difficulty to accommodate all levels of skill and experience. read more
