Alameda Bicycle on Park Street is a part of the community, and I feel so honored to spend my money here. Gene, George and Crew are unmatched in the Bay Area. They sell mid-price range bikes, so no $300 bikes or $14,000 bikes. I bought my first new bike here after graduating from Cal, and got my first Wall Street bonus, moons ago. It was my dream bike, a black Cannondale, top of the line. After that, got married and had children and Gene saw me through training wheels through teenage years, then sadly through a divorce. Back in a bike and climbing mountains - loving life! Anyway, today, after trying all night to get my chain back on my new e-bike (not possible on the road) I walked in and George was at the door. He sensed my frustration and said, "Come on in." It wasn't an easy fix. But they worked on it, two guys 25 minutes, and 5 tools. Meanwhile, I walked into the showroom to check out the bikes (tee hee hee). Then I noticed a new coffee and tea station with a couch and chairs, and Madeline cookies. It's just what I needed after a frustrating night and morning trying to fix it myself. Such a mindful and kind touch. People easily complain, so positive heartfelt reviews are gold. Alameda Bicycle is a solid community member and business. Honest. If I don't need something, George will say, "You don't need that." Last time, I picked up some gorgeous Ortlieb panniers (which they installed) and a fix-a-flat for on the road flats. I forgot it on the counter -- it was here waiting for me when I returned a few weeks later. They only had my old digits! BTW, I didn't eat the last Madeline cookie. I saved it for you! I came here in 2020 or 2021 to use their outside public bike tool station, but the air pump was broken or no longer available. One of the employees offered to let me borrow their floor pump. I was struggling to figure out how to use it, and the employee ended up helping me pump my bike tire. It's been years, but I still remember this kind gesture from one of their employees. It's hard to find parking around Park Street; it's convenient that they have four compact parking spots and one handicap accessible parking spot in their parking lot. read more

Woo-hoo!!! Glad to have found a bike shop that fixes my bike and doesn't leave it with more issues than it started with. Staff is welcoming, friendly, and so helpful. While we were there dropping my bike off we couldn't figure out how to get my kiddo's brakes released to get her bike in our car. While showing us how to release the brakes, the staff discovered that the people we bought it from had installed them incorrectly... they fixed the brakes so that we could release them properly and take the front wheel off. I had just recently stared biking and it was my first time going to this bike shop and needed a tire tube, was immediately greeted by someone and they were extremely helpful and knowledgeable (which makes sense haha). They have a system that keeps your number to keep track of your purchases which is great because I lose reciepts all the time. Called to ask if they do de-grease and dry loob application... no. Asked if they can add a trailer hitch accessory to the axle so it's done properly before my next stop. Because I mentioned I was going to Burning Man they refused to work on my bike. Not because the bike had been to burning man and was dusty or damaged... No literally because of where I was going AFTER the bike was serviced. This is my first year going to burning man, I'm visiting the are at a friends house before I go and wanted to pay a professional to do proper maintenance and install. I'm very confused what Burning Man did to this shop but this is bizarre. Super unprofessional, might as well told me you wouldn't service my bike because you didn't like my "kind." I brought my bike in for a flat tire. Dropped it off in the early afternoon on a Saturday. They had it finished same day, and I was able to pick it up at 5:30 before they closed! This is my go to bike shop. I made the mistake of buying a bike at another bike shop in town that has an interesting selection of bikes [(located on Central Ave). the sales pitch was wonderful - customer care and ethics, not so much] So why would I recommend these folks? 1) They are ethical. They look and speak to - is this the right bike for me? They don't look for the short term sale. They are pretty blunt about what will and will not work for repairing my bikes (I do admit, I haven't always been thrilled by this) 2) I have had good experiences with the services they have performed on my bikes. They are good at letting you know how long it will take. 3) I have been happy with how they have found solutions for stuff I was looking for (silly stuff like panniers, bells, helmet and the like) Down sides - not a huge selection of brands - they service what they sale. It's time for me to start using my bike regularly. I used to shop here over 20 years ago when our friend worked at this shop. Over the years bike parts have really gone up but then Covid pandemic hit so now everyone is biking again to be outside instead of being indoors. I called in to see if they could service my bike the same day and Nick was nice to speak to on the phone. He gave me estimates and appointment info but I chose to drop off and pick up in a week. Good thing I did that! Matthew at the back service desk was cool and helpful. I really appreciated his services. I bought our Specialized bikes about 20 years ago. He looked up my info, they still had it at my old address for one of the bikes we bought here. If my bike was bought here, they would have had my info on my bike and I would have had lifetime tune ups. Too bad! My ratings is more on service. They did have a variety of named brand bikes here. They communicated well via text. They text me that my bike was ready. I picked up my bike with an easy transaction. Can't say I recommend. I went in to get SPD cleat conversions for my road shoes. I'm not a huge cyclist and do it for the fun, so I leverage the experience of the people in the shop. The staff here said it's not possible to convert, rather than just saying no we don't carry the conversion plate for road cleats to SPD. I probably would have just bought the new shoes anyway since I have a ride later. With that said just be honest with what you carry rather than trying to convert my questions into an upsale. read more

I wanted to like this place so much but I was disappointed by the attitude of some of the associates. This is what happened. 1. As an adult, I taught myself how to ride a bike using a junior bike. When my junior bike, which was only one size down from an adult bike, had a punctured tube, I brought it in for repair, the sales associate helping me told me that my bike was a child's bike. Wow, like I didn't know that it was 2inches smaller than what I needed? Thanks, not condescending at all. The mansplaining said it all. Then, said associate starts to sell me on the bikes starting at $500. Thanks... I'm sure that I needed a new bike at that very moment. Let's turn this $30 experience into a $500+ experience all in one afternoon. 2. Later on last year when I graduated to an adult bike, my friend gave me his sister's old bike which was bought from this place. The sales associate said that I'd still qualify for free tune ups. But this year, when I checked on it... Apparently, this no longer applied to my bike. So y'all... If you ever buy a bike here and gift it to someone, just know that your recipient does not qualify for that life time tune up. Different feedback from different associates. My first fancy bike helmet! Due to covid I have picked up lots of new hobbies. Buying a bike and going outside for rides is new and I knew I had to buy a helmet. I haven't had to buy a helmet since my bike in elementary school so I was surprised to find out how many different styles and range of costs of helmets there is. I didn't want to purchase anything until I absolutely loved it and that's where Alameda Bicycle comes in! First off you cannot go into the store so they have outside seating for you. You let the associate know what you are looking for and they bring it out to you. Matthew was our store associate and he provided amazing customer service!! I told Matthew I wanted a helmet either black or white under a $100. Matthew brought out a variety for me to try and I went home with this awesome Giant shinny helmet equipped with a light on the back! ( Matthew put the light on my helmet for me!) Came in to get my helmet replaced under the Specialized crash replacement policy (where they give you a discount on a new helmet). Specialized themselves recommended Alameda Bicycle and I was almost about to go to another bike shop on the other side of the city but decided to give these guys a try since they had the helmet I wanted in stock. Overall, very impressed. I was able to coordinate everything over text message and when I turned up today, they had the helmet set aside with my name on and I was in and out in about 5 minutes. We opted for the specialized bike since we were advised that it was lighter than the giant bike. Within minutes the bike was assembled and my son was able to go for a test ride down the street. I took my Specialized gravel bike to this shop to get -the handlebar, stem and tape replaced -the front derailleur replaced -the crankset and bottom bracket replaced. This was just labour - I sourced all the parts. I'm going to try to give a factual account of what happened. My rating will speak for itself. On the handlebar and tape install, they left a large and unsightly loop of deraillaur cable on the left side. They could have pulled it through or trimmed the housing in the rear to avoid this. On the front derailleur install, I immediately experienced chain drop on the downshift. I brought the bike back and all they did was move the lower limit way out. Solved the chain drop, but introduced rub. No effort to find a happy medium. On the crankset and bottom bracket, they used an incorrect spacer set-up even though all necessary spacers were provided. The crankset came loose on the second ride. (This is a supposedly pro shop we're talking about.) I took the bike back and they installed a crankset spacer that didn't sit flush with the bottom bracket dust cover on the non-driveside. They could have used one of the many bottom bracket spacers I gave them, which would have been compatible with the dust cover as they came with the BB. The bottom bracket is marketed as compatible with the crankset, so there must be a way to make it work. They made no effort to call the bottom bracket manufacturer to ask for advice. I have had to take the bike to a different shop to get the latter two problems fixed. It's going to cost me at least another $100 on top of the $250 I already spent with Alameda Bicycle. Draw your own conclusion. read more

If price is your priority, Alameda Bicycle is probably not for you. This shop is designed around the upscale suburbanite living on Alameda's upper middle class. However, if high-quality service is what you are seeking, then you've come the right place. I called around to local bicycle shops to assess how much they would charge to fix a broken spoke. Alameda Bicycle came in at the high-end. However, the fellow on the phone was wonderfully helpful and very knowledgeable. He was also friendly and had a sense of humor. If you buy a bike lock here, you are going to pay about 10-15% higher than what you would pay if you bought the same lock on Amazon. For small parts and accessories, I usually just buy online. But if you are buying a new bike, you will want to come here to get properly fitted. They'll assess your needs and help you pick the right bike. read more

These guys are great! The bike market has been insane during the pandemic, I looked for a gravel bike for over a year. I've put my name on waitlists everywhere and they are the only shop you checked in with me and responded when they got stock. I was able to text with them and ask questions till one I liked came in. I finally picked up my bike yesterday and it's a fantastic fit for me. Their customer service was impeccable. Not only did they make me feel comfortable COVID safety wise, they helped me determine if it was a good fit with no pressure. George was fantastic- knowledgable and friendly, he helped me pick out the right locks and accessories so Im ready to go again. Never pressured me to buy anything, just made sure I had my needs met. Multiple team even members thanked me for being patient for so long and explained why there's such a wait for the bike type I wanted. I was on the hunt for a fast, lightweight bike for distance and elevations with (gasp) upright handlebars. I know- relatively unheard of in the biking world -- after trying on a very bikes a helpful bike associate at the shop suggested I contact Scott (owner/manager) for a custom build. Scott 100% understood what I was looking for and I felt no judgment for wanting upright handlebars which feel better on my body. I want to be biking when I'm 75 ya'll. I bought my first real bike from alameda because a friend recommended them for their good service, matching prices and lifetime tuneups. (I've always been happy with all three of those aspects.) Now, I live on the peninsula and so it's hard to treat alameda as my LBS. the other day, I was out riding and realized my back wheel was wobbling pretty bad. So I brought the wheel into my LBS in Redwood City. The mechanic put the wheel on the stand, spun it, and shook his head saying "yeah..... your rim is ruined and can't be fixed." I wasn't really ready yet to spring for a new rim so, I decided to swing by alameda for a tune up and see what they thought about the wheel. The mechanic here said he'd tried much worse and, while he couldn't promise, seemed pretty confidant that he could fix it as part of a general tuneup. I dropped the bike off and, a week later, I'm picking it up. The wheel is good as new AND the bike is tuned, for LESS than the Redwood City shop would have charged for a new wheel. Long overdue for a review!! I bought my bike here over 11 years ago. This bike shop is sooo friendly, helpful and just good energy all around. Today I had a bike emergency. I had a front flat and need my bike for a ride tomorrow in SF. I called Alameda Bicycle and they told me to bring it in. No guarantees it would be done same day but like they said it's not impossible. George checked me in and less than 30 mins I got my bike fixed and ready to go. I'm so glad I bought my bike here. The crew here is amazing. I never had bad customer service here. Please don't go anywhere! Thank you for everything! Alameda Bicycle is one of Alameda's​ best bike shops--and each one has its partisans in our Island City. ;-) The staff is friendly, family-oriented, and able to help with older classic steel bikes like mine from the 1970s as well as the latest carbon fiber bikes. (NOTE: I prefer and own only classic steel bikes but one of them *does* have a Campagnolo Ergo 10-speed drivetrain.) The shop has great programs for families with growing children: you can turn a kid's bike in that you bought there and "trade-up" in size: ask about the details, as I am not a parent. They also had a great "learn-to-ride" program once a month (suspended due to #COVID19) during the warmer months to teach kids of all ages how to ride without training wheels. Before #COVID19 restrictions were implemented last year, Alameda Bicycle was a great place to hang out and shop. The access restrictions have changed but the friendly welcome and great service have not6 changed, other than to be slower because of the necessary pandemic precautions they take to protect their staff and customers. Like all bike shops during the pandemic, Alameda Bicycle has experienced shortages in the availability of repair parts and new bikes in the midst of much higher demand for bikes and service: patience is called for since same-day sales and service as well as quick turnarounds are much harder to provide. read more

I bought my first road bike here this week and had a great experience. I came with a vague understanding of road bikes that I'd gotten just from googling and asking some friends. The employee I worked with (I wish I had asked her name) was so patient and kind, and helped explain to me what I should look for in my price range, as well as how the bike should fit me and what the different specs of different styles are. I was able to put a bike on hold while I called around elsewhere, but ultimately I returned the next day to purchase the bike (not only due to lack of stock at other shops -- COVID bike shortages are real) but because the shop was so helpful and I was so comfortable there and felt like I was in good hands, when other shops were a bit dismissive. I'll definitely come here in the future with anything bike-related. Bonus, it's walking distance from me. I feel lucky to have a great bike shop so close! read more

I think Alameda Bicycle is the best bike shop in the Bay Area and we don't go anywhere else (unless a tire blows out on a ride far away). My husband has bought numerous bikes (road and mountain) from this shop and gets them worked on here every time. He is super picky about how his bike is maintained and he has always been pleased with their work at the shop. The staff there is super knowledgeable and friendly and makes you feel welcomed when you come in. My family and I just moved and for the first time in a long time I decided to take the bike out and head to the local book and toy store. When I left everything looked safe but headed back my front tire seemed flat and I was passing by Alameda Bicycle. Asking just for air, Larry the technician went way beyond. Not only did he pumped air in my tire, my front brake was a little off and he insisted to fix it since my child was riding on the bike. I tried to pay for his services but he wouldn't let me. Have had multiple great experiences here. Their team was a huge help with recommendations for purchasing my first road bike. I messaged them my interests through the online custom bike quote and Scott got back to me in a timely manner with options in and around my price point. Once the bike arrived, the bike was held for me so I had a few days to test ride the bike before purchasing. There was no sales pressure to buy on the spot and they highly encourage you to test ride the bike before buying. They offer free lifetime tune-ups on bikes purchased through them. I have yet to see another local bike shop with this offer. Buying a bike amid COVID, this was definitely the way to go. Used their texting option (available through their website) to purchase a few items from their grand opening online store sale. Was able to order, pay, and receive an itemized receipt all via text.
