Very disappointing experience with Castro Valley Cyclery. I took my bike to this shop for a full service that cost $500. From the start, I specifically asked them to replace the rear derailleur cable, but the process was extremely slow -- it took them over two months to complete the service and more than two weeks just to send me the service order. When I finally picked up my bike and made the payment, I went out for my first ride and discovered they hadn't done the job I requested. The bike failed right away. I decided to take it back so they could fix what they didn't do properly. They told me they would send me a new service order that same Monday, but two more weeks passed and I received nothing. During that time, I called several times, politely asking for an update or a copy of the order, but they never followed up or resolved the issue. I am very unhappy with their service. As a cyclist, I know how important it is to keep a bike in top condition to enjoy a good ride, but this shop is neither willing to help nor to keep their word. I do not recommend Castro Valley Cyclery at all. If you value your time, your money, and your safety while riding, avoid going through such a frustrating experience as I did. It's disappointing that a shop with so many years of experience offers such poor service and unprofessional customer care. read more

They specialize in service and do a great job! The chainring shifting mechanism on my road bike broke and they replaced the shifter brake. My bike shifts and brakes like butter now! I'll have to take my bike back to get a full tuning at some point. read more

I was having an issue w my FOX fork . I had spoken w owner John previously about possible Problem and solution. He recommend I bring my bike in so he can have a look . I dropped the bike off near closing time on a Thursday night and told him I was hoping to get the bike back before the weekend . John , disassembled the fork and found a defective part inside . The defective part made disassembly much more difficult and timely to re assemble and repair . I was a first time customer and thought I might be in trouble and unable to get my bike back in time for the weekend . John replaced the part and stayed late on a Friday night !! to get my bike back to me before the weekend . Fork performed perfectly w no issues . 5 stars for CASTRO VALLEY CYCLERY ! read more

DONT RECOMMEND!!!!! Took six days to just look at my bike after being told bring it in a week the week before . Never did anytype of work on the bike in those 6 days. So expensive 150 just for a brake bleed. Went to a private bike shop and got a tune up and a brake bleed for 140 on top of that I got a brand new magurea lever . Older gentleman in there was nice can't say the same about the younger gentleman! read more

My partner dropped off my carbon fiber Giant Defy Advanced road bike as a surprise to have it tuned up. He paid a $500 deposit and clearly instructed the shop to keep all original parts intact and not touch the handlebar position. About a week later, I received a call from one of the employees saying they needed an additional $338 to complete the work. During that call, he offered to use lower-cost parts "from the back" to save money--and I clearly said no, and repeated that if anything had to be replaced, it had to be original parts only. Despite this, they did the exact opposite: My Shimano Ultegra 6600 STI shifters were replaced with microSHIFT R9, a cheaper brand that doesn't even feel right. My chrome Ultegra derailleur was swapped for a plastic Shimano Sora. My crankset and cassette were replaced too--now there are yellow plastic spacers between the gears, which were never on my original setup. Even my handlebars were changed. When I came to pick up the bike, the employee admitted it: "I know you didn't want your handlebars down like this, but I left them that way because that's how they should be." I didn't even feel safe riding it. I almost fell. The lever position and stiffness were all wrong, and the shifters weren't the integrated style I had before. Worse, none of my original parts were returned, even though I explicitly asked them not to remove them in the first place. And the receipt only shows $338.08, with no breakdown of labor time or an explanation for the missing $161.92 from the $500 deposit. Tax was only charged on the $338, not the full amount. The math is sketchy and raises major concerns about how deposits are handled. And to top it off--I had to stay in a hotel an extra night to pick up the bike because the shop said they couldn't locate it when I first called, even though it had already been there for over a month while I was out of the country. This wasn't some clunker bike. It's a Giant Defy Advanced carbon fiber road bike, probably a 2017, originally silver carbon weave. It's extremely light and worth over $1,000 in used condition. I painted it myself to prevent theft, not because it wasn't valuable. I feel completely taken advantage of. The shop didn't listen, swapped my original parts for cheap ones, and delivered a bike that's worse to ride than when I dropped it off. I would never trust this shop again, and I would strongly warn other cyclists to steer clear--especially if you care about your bike or expect your instructions to be respected. read more

I had my road bike for the past seven years, and used it only a handful of times outdoors. Even after a professional fitting, it was really not my style. The bike is too aggressive and responsive for my taste. My neighbor highly recommended John from Castro Valley Cyclery. I thought I'll be needing a refit, but after speaking with John he suggested different ways for me to enjoy my ride. I told him my disappointments and how I picture bike riding. He led me to a road bike he is converting and asked if I'm interested to switch to a hybrid. Right then and there I left my road bike so he can begin checking for parts and be able to provide a quote. Fast forward a month after my bike is ready, just in time for the long weekend. Yes, it does take a few phone calls to get to someone, but the staff are all busy working on whatever order or tune up. Supply issues are also real, and John was upfront with that. Here are some reasons why you need to come here... Mr. Proprietor, John 'Kos' Koslosky's CVC is THE ONLY shop I have come to know in the SF East Bay that can hook you up with parts that may have gone, or are near going into obsolescence. This was the case recently, as it was years ago when Kos restored my antique, Dutch Batavus Oma Fiets. Holy Moosepoops! He had a super secret stash of obscure rubber washers to replace one that fell to bits and pieces smithereens, that was a part of the quick release assembly on my ten year old Quik-Pak Bicycle Cart/Trailer, too!! My gear shifters on my 2006 Specialized Tricross totally tanked recently. Ja, considering, 16 years is a pretty good run before total and complete catastrophic failure ensued. I was daunted that I would have to catch up with today's gear shifting technology. Guess what. Kos scored one of the last sets in existence for my ride. And the deft, exquisite, fine-eye-for-detail tune up my trusty steed Specialized received has it running 2006 newness restored, AGAIN. Good. Golly. Just. Go. Here. read more

Just another day in paradise... My son wanted to take my wife and I down to the San Leandro Marina and ride bikes today. Only problem was we had not used our 3 bikes for awhile, and had a total of 6 flat tires! He has also grown a bit taller, and we need to adjust his seat, as well as the one for my wife. It almost seemed like the moment would be lost... But wait! I tossed the bikes on the rack, and we drove over to Johns' shop. Of course he greeted us with his ridiculously huge smile, and said "roll'em inside"! 15 minutes later we were headed out to the trail. I have bought all my bikes here over the years, and price has nothing to do with it. Sure, he is very competitive on price, but the quality of his service and attention to detail is really what brings me back time and again. From the first day I met John, he has always strived to make sure my bikes were a good fit for my family. Based on riding style, location, and fitness level, he will make sure you are on a bike that not only suits you, but that you will look forward to ride at every opportunity. Thanks John! I don't cycle, but I do have a jogging style child stroller with big wheels. And the tires were low on tire pressure. So, I came here to get a hand held tire inflator. I bought one and went out in front of the store to use the inflator. Needless to say, I sucked and I could not get the damned thing to work. I was jerking that thing off for a good 5 minutes. (The style of the pump really made it look like I was doing that.) After 5 mins a worker inside the store comes out and tries to help, then brings me back inside to see what could be done. While I was waiting to speak with the owner of the store a couple, not a rude couple, they just didn't see me, get in front of me. The couple talks to the owner and say they want to buy an $800 bike. I am in line to replace $30 hand tire inflator. The owner politely asks the couple to wait, even though the couple stated that they were in a rush and would not be able to wait long, etc., and he communicated to the couple that I was there first and waiting. I told the owner to ignore me and help them, because they were going to spend more money than me, but he was focused on customer service, not the sale. In short, he treated poor little old me just as importantly as a customer who was ready to spend a lot more money than me. This is a sign a good customer service. I enjoyed the experience with this establishment and recommend that you go here for the good customer service experience. read more

TL; DR: A+++ service. Fantastic work for a reasonable price, but allow flexibility/grace with completion date. Review: I am so grateful to have been referred to this bike shop by my friend. I purchased a used bicycle off of a coworker as I wanted to start taking the train and biking to work instead of being stuck in traffic. The bike had not been serviced ever since the previous owner had it so I figured it would be wise to get it looked over before I started using it. I took it to CVC where I met John who is/was polite, patient, and clear in his communication. I dropped off my bike for a tune up and received an estimated pick up date of about 1-2 weeks later. John recommended calling in to follow up before coming into pick up so when I did, he let me know that he wished he had a bit more time for he was out sick and also wanted to really return the bike to me in the best shape possible. I wasn't in urgent need of the bike so another week was not a problem. When I did pick up my bike, I could not recognize it! It seriously looked brand new and when I took it for a test ride, I thought I was riding a new bike. The difference from when I test rode the bike before purchasing it to the test ride I went on after the tune up on it from John was a night and day difference. John made sure I was completely satisfied with the bike and took the time to explain all the work he did and answered any questions I had. I really appreciate that he even went outside with me to see me ride to ensure the seat height was appropriate/optimal. If you need your bike serviced in any fashion, I highly recommend this shop! I broke the bottle cage screw by using the wrong tool, so I went down to the shop and see if they could fix it for me. The staff was very nice and replaced the bolts on my bike under 5 mins and it was free of charge! I'm thankful for his help (sorry I didn't get the name). Me: Non-spandex weekend bike rider. I like flats but I enjoy the occasional challenging hills. I know nothing about bikes. I self taught in college so I can ride to school. I know nothing about gears. I learned about gearing on YouTube. My only bike in life was a $60 POS I bought at Toys R us. If this sounds like you, then this review is for you. If you're that super high speed bike person that is fitted head to toe and possess special pedals and shoes... This review is useless for you. I picked this shop because it was close to my house. I wanted a place close for convenience in the off chance I needed repairs/ modifications. The person that helped me was awesome. He was very patient with me and schooled me on a lot of things. Long story short, I bought my first real bike. It costs a lot more than $60, but it rides very smooth, fast, and it looks damn sexy. They even provide free annual tune ups! I have owned my bike for one year and brought it in two times. One for the tune up and to have the front disc brake adjusted because it made a horrendous squealing sound when I pressed it and the second time when my front brake just stopped working. Something about the hydraulic thing malfunctioned and they told me it was not my fault. I brought the bike in on a Friday when they opened. I told them it would be nice to have it before my weekend so I can ride but I understood if it would take a week or two if they had to get the manufacture to send them parts. I got my bike the same day at closing. I was pretty happy. I'm glad I chose this spot to buy my bike. The guys here are super knowledgable and they are the type that are fitted head to toe with the special pedals ands shoes. So feel comfortable leaving your stuff to them. In regards to customer service, they are not the type that greets you with a super bubbly attitude like that girl on the AT&T commercials. Don't be shy and just ask them a question. I went in to ask about some cardboard bike boxes. Another local cycle shop entity tried to charge me $5 each - I don't normally make it a habit of paying for other people's trash, which is what used cardboard (however nice) is, but this guy was really super cool and very hospitable. Said come by tomorrow and you can have these three if you want - gestured to the three bikes that needed building later in the day. I just want to say that nice people are always in fashion. They do not push you to buy the best or most expensive stuff that they have. Just give you the info and you decide. I bought my specialized diverge from them about 4 years ago but I never took it in for the tune up. I called them up and told them the situation and they said they will happily do the complimentary tune up on the externals only. When I picked it up they said they geeked out a little bit and did a lot more than just tune up the externals. They were definitely friendly and excellent customer service, they went above and beyond. I also had some bar tape installed and did an awesome job with that as well. John is the man!!!!!! read more

I drove 30 minutes to drop off my bike for service on a Saturday at 2:00. Posted hours are 10:00AM to 4:00PM. Shop is empty. Doors locked, voicemail is full. No sign indicating why they are closed and if they will reopen today. A waste of my afternoon. The friend that recommended the shop warned that they never answer their phone.
