    Outside

My review is based on looking inside because last night a car drove into store & stole the ATM & the store is closed. Well, actually wide open - the outside is being repaired, the inside is completely trashed, & wow, they ripped the ATM right off its base. Things aren't going to get better until there are consequences & deterrents for crime. The CVS in Lower Haight is closing in January, joining a long list of closed businesses. That said, the Doom Loop is not in effect, life is good here- mostly. I'm not leaving, & either are my friends & neighbors.

This review is specifically targeted to their COVID19 Vaccination services. Five star goes directly to how accessible their scheduling site is to book your appointment for both doses, as well as how fast and easy their check-in is and of course the vaccination itself. My partner and I scheduled our first doses on the same day but we could not find a back-to-back slot, but after calling them, they told me that we can come together on the later time to save the trip. Love how flexible and thoughtful they are. The nurse was professional and the whole injection took less than a millisecond and barely felt any pain. There's an aisle with chairs spread apart so they get to monitor us for 15 minutes after our vaccines. Everything was like clockwork and it was a really pleasant experience overall! Thank you CVS!

Halls Cough Drops: Triple Soothing Action ($5.99)

I've had a nasty cough that I've been trying to get rid of. On the way home, the roommate and I dropped by CVS to grab a few things. We stopped by on Monday, June 11th around 5:30pm. I really only needed cough drops and syrup, so I headed straight to that section. Ended up getting a big bag of Halls Cough Drops: Triple Soothing Action ($5.99) and a big bottle of Delsym Cough Syrup: 12 Hour Cough Relief ($18.49). Check out was relatively easy. Just went to the self check out register and scanned my items. For the delsym, someone did need to come by to verify my age as I think you need to be over 18 to buy it? First time I encountered it so I thought it was kind of funny. Convenient CVS as I live close by.

Neglected and dirty entryway- sweep & hose!

Had the most horrifying experience trying to get something as simple as a passport photo…read more I came in, and the employee with a shaved head, Benson, announced that he couldn't take my photo because the only computer where it could be printed was being used by a customer who had been on it for over an hour. I asked if the customer could be asked to move since he'd already been there for so long and all I needed was five seconds to print a passport photo. Benson said no. The customer was an elderly man looking at a picture of a bird, while I was trying to get my passport renewed so I don't get deported. What an absolute joke. I asked to speak to the manager, who seemed completely unaware that they only had one working computer. Why was this a surprise? Had they simply made peace with having only one functional computer? Nobody could take any steps to figure out how to fix the other one? What kind of store is this? The only reason I chose this location specifically was because, after researching, I learned it has its own dedicated photo section. Of all Walgreens locations, this one should be making sure its equipment is actually working. The manager told Benson to take my picture. He took ONE SINGLE PHOTO and wanted to stop right there. This is a picture that's going to be on my passport for the next ten years. I can't get at least a couple taken so I can compare them? After I asked for another photo, he muttered under his breath, "stupid b*tch." Yep. That's all it took for him to call a customer a "stupid b*tch" -- having to press a button one more time. The horror. The fact that he felt comfortable mumbling that to me while standing just inches from my face, with his manager only a few steps away, tells me everything I need to know about the management. If he's that comfortable saying something so extremely offensive and inappropriate, there is clearly a lack of accountability. I absolutely called him out on it. Are you serious? He immediately started denying it like an immature person who couldn't take accountability for his own actions. I'm a violinist- my hearing is impeccable. Don't even try that argument with me. The manager ended up taking my picture after he got me upset, and now my face looks angry. I'll have to get another passport photo somewhere that doesn't call customers "stupid b*tches" for asking to renew their passport. She didn't seem interested in addressing his behavior at all. He simply walked away as if nothing had happened. Absolutely disgusted. DO NOT GO THERE.

I have complicated dental issues, I'll start with that. This requires me to use a prescription…read moretoothpaste that my dentist prescribed for me, and after many unsuccessful attempts at getting it from the big box pharmacy on 32nd and Clement, I got fed up and decided to look for it elsewhere. I searched up "pharmacy" in my maps app and this little shop popped up just around the corner from where I live, no more than a 5 minute drive, and so I called and spoke to a very kind staff member who, within a few minutes, asked for my information and said they'd call me back as soon as they knew if they could order that particular prescription toothpaste. A whopping four minutes later, I got a call back! Yes! They could absolutely order it for me, but it would take... *drumroll* a day, or MAYBE EVEN TWO, for them to have it ready to be picked up. My apologies with the sarcasm but in the pharmacy world, that is lightning fast, especially for something they didn't have in stock! Amazing. I went to pick it up, and when I did, I realized that I hadn't specified the flavor I prefer, and I just decided not to bother, because I didn't want to be a pest. But as I called in for the refill a few weeks later, they said it wouldn't be any trouble at all to order a specific flavor, and that I could've said something during the first pickup! Amazing. I love this place. I did have to pay out of pocket but that wasn't a surprise at all to me. It actually was about 20% less than I was paying at the big box drugstore, so that's amazing on top of amazing. I LOVE supporting local and small businesses anytime I get the opportunity, and sometimes I do so with a slight grimace because the service at smaller family owned shops can vary, but no fear of that at this particular local pharmacy, it is genuinely far better than the alternative. I will keep getting my 3M toothpaste here (in vanilla mint) for as long as they're around!

The wait in line in the store can be forever just to pick up a prescription. I just spend 23 mins on hold waiting to speak to the pharmacy - only to have the recording suddenly tell me the pharmacy is going to lunch for 30 mins and to call back (or hold on). Doubtless, Walgreens sanctimonious 'explanation' would be the staff deserve a lunch. Of course that's true - but the real problems are that 1) Walgreens understaffs pharmacies with one pharmacist vs two who could take turns taking a break / lunch, 2) they've closed numerous stores without adding staff in remaining stores, 3) stores were understaffed to begin with. It seems clear that Walgreens is in the process of backing out of the retail pharmacy business - but there really aren't a lot of alternatives left in this highly dysfunctional business.

I've been meaning to write a review of Joe's Pharmacy and Tony for some time but wanted to have…read morebeen using them long enough to justify it. If there was ever a time, it's now. There are a lot of negative reviews on here, but be aware that there are also a lot of four and five star reviews that aren't shown because they aren't factored into whatever Yelp's special formula for review is and therefore not shown as "recommended" reviews. But you can see them all here: http://www.yelp.com/not_recommended_reviews/ZfDy15zBZlyKte5hJF6JRA I moved all of my prescriptions a little less than a year ago when the dosage of my bupropion had been shorted, not once, not twice, but three times in 5 months by the Walgreens across the street. And the last time it happened, the tech actually questioned me about it possibly "being my own mistake" what I might be doing. I was diagnosed with depression when I was 8 and in my 30 years since then, it's the only antidepressant that has consistently and successfully worked for me. But because I've had problems with it lasting through the half life, my doctor prescribes me 150 mg of the extended 24 hour release twice a day. That means instead of 30, 150mg pills, I have a specific prescription approved for 60. At Joe's they understand that and they never get it wrong. And here are some other reasons happy to get my other prescriptions filled here: When a prescription for any of my long term medications is set to expire, they call my doctor and have it renewed when filling the last refill so that I have no delays. They just take care of it without me even asking them to. Tony will always tell you that he is a pharmacist and as such, he only needs to fill prescriptions and sell OTC medications or medical products. He doesn't sell pepsi cola or chia pets, because it's not why he became a pharmacist. Tony, all of his staff, interns, and other pharmacy techs are consistently friendly, pleasant, and caring of their clientele and they always remember you and your medication needs. And finally, as someone who used to work for OFA and the DNC, as much as I really fought the good fight to get the Affordable Care Act enacted, I have to admit that it has been nothing but a total shit-storm rolling out. You see, I'm one of those unfortunate people who's insurance company dropped their individual coverage plan so that it didn't have to comply with the ACA. So like a responsible person, I signed up for a new plan with Anthem Blue Cross as soon as the ACA went live. And as the year closed, I had yet to see anything for my premium payment. So again, like a responsible person, I called Anthem Blue Cross, who confirmed that they got my application, that I would definitely have coverage, and then took my first premium payment over the phone. As of today, January 7, 2014, they still have yet to process my payment or issue me a member ID and group number. And after spending hours on hold they still assure me that I have coverage, but they have also, and very confidently, given me a lot of misinformation about how to handle getting my prescriptions filled, and now they don't even answer the phone at all. As a result, I am paying out of pocket for everything. I called Tony and compared to the other big box store pharmacies actually has the best value on medication. For example, for the last year, my birth control pill has supposed to have been free with insurance under the ACA requirements. While I'm in insurance limbo hell, I have to pay full cost for it and after researching it, here is what I have found the out of pocket cost for a 91 day supply of generic Seasonique : Costco (generic not carried): $315 for name brand Walgreens: $295 Target: $247.50 Walmart: My soul and dignity + BART fare to Oakland Joe's Pharmacy: $180 Yep, the guy who makes really nothing compared to the bigger retail pharmacies is the least expensive, not to mention most accommodating and neighborly. If money were no object, I would go to Costco and stick it to Anthem Blue Cross when they have to reimburse me. The small neighborhood pharmacy is dying out, so sorry, while some reviewers may have issues with Joe's Pharmacy, I have zero complaints and will continue to fill my prescriptions here.
