Well, I guess it has been a long time since I shopped and cooked when in the city, but you know that because you are following and see my excessive unhealthy eating out... So with that said, I bought a bunch of veggies and fruit. Sorry, the fruits were in the compost bags. Going to cook some healthy meals while (stuck) in the city. Maybe even upload it to Yelp if I am not too busy. Ambiance - Decent size location, especially for the city. Smaller than your usual Smart and Final. But there is a huge parking lot, which is rare in the city, thank you. This is mainly the reason I am a customer here. That, plus I am always shopping on Clement street. Service - Self service. Check out was friendly and easy. Only two registers were open today, one express one regular. But it moved fairly quickly. Price - $26, reasonable for SF prices. Only about half the items were on sale. I miss my San Leandro Food Max and my Reno Winco. I'm a regular customer here and usually have a great experience, which is why today was extremely disappointing. I came shopping with my 5-year-old son and I forgot and placed my basket at the cashier. The older gentleman working around 6 PM became visibly upset that I didn't take the items out myself. He repeatedly complained (4-5 times) that I was slowing him down, speaking in a rude and frustrated tone. ( You can tell me nicely ) I apologized, but he continued with a negative attitude and clearly did not want to provide service. After scanning, while I was bagging my items, he threw the basket behind him in an angry manner. I truly don't understand why I was treated this way. I did nothing wrong. If he does not want to work in customer service, I don't understand why he is in this role. There is no reason to be this rude to a customer. This experience turned what should have been a good day into a very unpleasant one. I shop here often and have always found the staff to be kind and welcoming, which makes this even more disappointing. I came here in the middle of the day I was surprised how crowded it was. I had to wait a little bit for check out but it moved faster compared to bargain market. I came to get treats for my dentist office to bring to them for my appointment. I like that they have fruit trays in the refrigerated section ready to go and the tray has watermelon, pineapple, honeydew and grapes. I also got the brownie bites and pastries. I think smart and final has a better inventory and more reliable for what you are looking for in terms of the inventory. Its a nice store and clean. The store has a bigger footprint compared to Andronicos and the aisles are wider. I got a lot for my money for a team of 15 people. The guy at checkout was friendly and there were multiple checkouts open in the middle of the day. read more

Smart & Final has been around for over 100 years. The Smart & Final in San Francisco in the Inner Richmond District offers lots of food and drinks. Inside the Smart & Final it feels like if you stepped into a mini- Food4 Less /Ross, and Grocery Outlet. Aisles of drinks , food, and supplies. They do have a descent sized produce section. They also have discounted items throughout the store. They do also have a surprising liquor selection. I would love to say I just had a great experience I will say this store is consistently horrible. I made a online order that was never delivered not a word when I went to check the order it said completed, I call the store spoke with Jeremy he informed me my order was never picked up, I asked why does it say complete he said because they picked the items but couldn't find a delivery service. I love this place and have been going there for like twenty years. Most of the staff is super nice and faster than light itself. If you have a lot of extra time, I highly recommend going through Art's line. He's the guy with the grey beard and a mask. He will tell you how he feels about products while he rings you up. If you're lonely this is the guy who is going to have long conversations to get you through your day. I like to play a little game where I get in the much longer line and see if Art has finished two transactions by the time I'm paying even though twice as many people were in front of me with way more products. Art hasn't won a single time. I've been going here long enough that I actually know some of the employees by name and see them out and about in the neighborhood. I truly feel bad for them because Father takes his time makes their jobs harder. read more

If you're looking for a retail "vibe," this isn't it--unless that vibe is "understaffed warehouse chic." The Good: * The Prices: Honestly, the only reason I'm here. They have everything you need, assuming you can actually find it. * Parking: A legitimate miracle. Finding a spot this easy in the city feels like I've cheated the system. The "SF Standard": * The Aisles: I hope you've been practicing your agility drills. These aisles are so tight I basically had to become best friends with three strangers just to grab a gallon of milk. * The Lockdowns: Want deodorant? Locked. Want detergent? Locked. I'm pretty sure the air is going to be behind plexiglass by 2026. Be prepared to wait for the one employee on duty to come set your toothpaste free. * The Service: I wouldn't call them rude. Dozen Eggland large cage-free eggs $5.19 Boneless skinless chicken breasts $3.87/lb (discounted from $4.49/lb) Tangerines 2# $3.99 Etc etc. Prices were about the same as Lucky and Safeway and products the same caliber in quality and selection. I was brought into Smart & Final because it was the one store I found online that had whole frozen turkey breasts (not easy to find off-season). They were $15 each, pricey at $5/lb. I'll save you the time and frustration of downloading the app on multiple devices to access coupons printed in the circular. When you go to add the coupons, at any hour of the day, on any device, all you see is the circle of death. And no way am buying something for $4.77, limit 4, that has a $1 coupon that won't load. I just visited smart and final yesterday and can I say how impressed I am of how they are taking special precaution on sanitizing the carts? I mean a guy stands (and stays there) sprays sanitizer and wipes down all carts and passes you one as go get into the store. All used carts stays on one side to get sanitized after every use. I arrived at 9am and the line was about 10 mins with 6ft markers on the floor. Produce was abundant but protein was quite bare. read more

Great place to go if you're in a pinch to get some goods to throw together for a meal or want to get a 5lb bag of gummy bears for a long drive. They're open 6am to 10pm, which is helpful. Don't expect to find bougie items in here like an Andronico's, Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, but you can expect a decent steak or chicken to be on sale here every other week or so. When there's a sale on chicken, you can expect every elderly grandma and grandpa swarming a chicken end cap for the best pack of cluck there is at around 830am. Best time to frequent this place is when it opens or closer to when it closes because you'll either get slim pickings or groggy morning workers. Please be nice to the load crew if you come across them stocking the aisles. They work overnight and stock the aisles with product and make it look uniform. read more

Setting expectations -- this is Smart & Final. It's discount warehouse-type supermarket, like Food Co or Grocery Outlet. It's bare-bones, don't expect Whole Foods, Andronico's, or even Safeway or Trader Joe's. Having said that, here's the pros: - Impressive array and range of wares! Almost every time, I'm impressed to find something somewhat to totally unexpected there. Since they cater to small businesses like CostCo, it even includes to-go containers, industrial cleaners, office supplies, and some seasonal stuff like sunscreen and beach toys for kids. I was really impressed to find Bona floor cleaning products *and* Bona mops there. Also, once I got sashimi and sushi from Nijiya but forgot to grab extra wasabi. Guess what! S&F had it. Just 1 option, but they had it and it was decent. - Yes, produce section is bare bones and erratic, but if you keep your eyes open, you can find some organic gems. Currently super impressed to find my go-to, Organic Girl's Super Greens salad mix, there for about 50 cents cheaper. Not sure how regular it'll be, but it's been there for a few weeks. If it's not there, the organic Sun Harvest (organic S&F house brand) has some other salad mixes in a pinch. Keep your eyes on the organic fridge and the non-refrigerated organic section for random gems. Last weekend, they had very decent organic heirloom tomatoes -- perfectly ripe. Sometimes, they have organic celery, sometimes, not. - Sun Harvest organic whole milk with Vit D is the cheapest organic milk at $4.29. These days, every penny counts. - Service -- yes, it can be curt, esp. at this store, but they're efficient and they do listen. We've had to return a couple products -- organic hothouse tomatoes package as 1 had gotten moldy and 1 package of lamb shoulder chops that just smelled very wrong when we opened it -- and the managers took care of it promptly. They have to deal with a wide array of customers and they (as far as I can see) deal with it politely, professionally, quickly and to the point, even if there's no small chat, etc. I'd prefer the faster service. I've also seen their cashier run after someone who didn't, uh, pay, so that shows the level of dedication. - I think it's cleaner than Grocery Outlet and Food Co. WAY cleaner -- comparable to Safeway. And this location definitely keeps its parking lot way cleaner than the 6th Ave & Cabrillo Safeway. - Love some of the random goodies I've found -- Finlandia sliced Gouda (difficult to find sliced non-smoked Gouda!) and Havarti, both imported from Finland!. Huey Fong's sambal oelek chili paste (not even generally found in Safeway). Great Eng muffins (better than Thomas'), only bad thing is they're only sold in a dozen, way too many. Finding WD-40 there saved me a trip to the hardware store. And in a pinch, you can find a lot of kitchenware, utensils. They also seem to have a First Street-branded Crystal Geyser sparkling water (just like TJ's, same bottles) -- only the plan is good for me, but it works. And they have La Croix and Buble, etc. - They have hard liquor! (yes, I know, so does Safeway, etc.). - Yes, they have tons and tons of frozen foods and processed foods. So if you go in with realistic expectations, you'll find that is pretty decent. Yes, you'll have to go elsewhere for some specific things, but you can eat pretty decently at S&F most of the time and the receipt totals don't scare you as much. read more

Cashier didn't honor the coupon sale for buying 4 cake mixes charged us $1.99 each for 2 boxes for cake mix should've been 99 cents if you buy 4. Lucky we checked our receipt. Was mailed to us. I was going to go to the bank next door to pull out some cash before going into smart and final to shop, just to be YELLED at that parking wasn't free. I then explained that I was going to the bank and would be back within 5 minutes to give smart and final my money just to be yelled at again that the bank has a parking lot and I should use that and then drive back to smart and final to park there, one door down. I asked if he was really going to be that strict about this given the situation (my coming back to spend money at the store) and he just smugly said "Yeah I am". This Smart and Final is a reliably good choice for shopping and has better prices and products than most of the supermarkets in the area! Most, if not ALL, of the employees and managers who work here deserve 5 Yelp Stars for their hard work, service, and patience. They have a daunting task of having to continually stock and restock products in this smaller shopping complex , navigate narrow aisles, and deal with demanding clientele. During my weekly shopping trips to this store, I routinely encounter the following types of patrons- "Egg Ladies"- When eggs go on sale here be sure to wear your rain gear to shop because, oh honey, there's going to be flying yolks everywhere! Hoardes of ghetto shoppers, mostly older Asian women, feel compelled to crowd around the egg area, SCREAM at each other, open all the cartons, take the eggs out, and smash them on the floor. I'm serious, there's broken eggs everywhere!!! It's a waste of produce and, guess what chickypoo's, here's a revelation- THE EGGS ARE ALL THE SAME! "Chicken Ladies"- Grab a lawn chair and bring some popcorn because the Smart and Final Chicken Lady Show is a helluva lot more entertaining than anything on Cinemax!!! Grown, mature women (and sometimes men), RECKLESSLY tearing open boxes of raw bird faster than the staff can bring it out, smacking each other for the packages, snatching wildly at the bags, shoving each other and loudly arguing about it. Once depleted, the bloodthirsty hyenas then turn on the staff, viciously screaming for more raw birds to feast on. It's a royal spectacle! LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!! "Parking Lot Pricks"- This Smart and Final has one of the largest private parking lots in the neighborhood. Sadly, many people who don't shop here will park their cars in the spaces, will shop elsewhere on Clement St, and will argue with the staff about it when they get called out. It's super frustrating to wait endlessly for a space to open up in the lot only to see someone walk back to their car carrying bags of dim sum that they didn't buy here. I even observed a guy back his car into another parked vehicle, damage it, step out of his car to see if anyone witnessed it, and then speed off. Geez! IF YOU'RE NOT SHOPPING HERE, DON'T PARK HERE!!! In spite of all this, this Smart and Final remains an A-OK place to shop. What can be improved? Convenient location, affordable prices. Parking can be a bit hairy, and the lines can build up, but I would say it's worth the wait. Give the store brand, First Street, a try. They are surprisingly good. For example, the First Street vinegar is better than the Walmart brand vinegar. The First Street hash browns are also good. The bathrooms may or may not be available--I believe there is only one, and there is often a line for it, or it is out of service, etc. read more

They have leased their spaces to the construction down the street per an employee - not making enough money from the customers? Every few years I try out this store, and every few years I'm (mostly) disappointed. They have some good deals on produce. But otherwise their prices aren't anything special -- especially so since a lot of products have brands that at least for me are unfamiliar, and the interior feels like a discount store like Grocery Outlet, but without its low close-out prices. They do have a lot of products in super-large sizes; so I suppose if it works for you to buy that way in bulk they have items that are cheap on a per-ounce basis. They also have a big display of beverages. While I hate to criticize a store for a staff experience that may be purely a one-off event, my cashier treated me as an annoyance that interfered with a chat he was having about great bands of yore with the previous customer. read more
